the BSC/RNC
CCSU handles CCS7 signaling functions for the exte
towards the other network elements in the MSS. Sign

CCSM handles the central part of CCS7 signaling ma

PAU handles signaling for PBX.
The Charging Unit collects and stores charging data.
GSW: Switching fabric of the MSS
The VLRU contains information about each subscribe

The main functions of the MGW
The Nokia Multimedia Gateway product can be used for transmitting and converting the user plane traffic in both bearer inde
Switched core network (MSC server environment) and IP based networks.
Between different kind of networks the MGW acts as a border element whose main functions are:
1) User plane transport;
- Under control of MSC Server (via H.248 protocol), MGW terminates the user plane from different kind of interfa
conversion between TDM, ATM and IP transmission technologies and connects the user plane between acces
2) Media Processing;
- MGW provides needed media processing functions like transcoding, Echo Cancelling, Automatic Level Contro
Announcements, as well as Conference Call functionality.
3) Signaling Transport;
- MGW adapts the conventional signaling (control plane) between MSC server and different network interfaces b
transport layer (without affecting the signaling application layers).
