THE AUXILIAN

The “dog days of summer” occur during the hottest and muggiest part of the season. Webster defines “dog days” as the period between early July and early September when the hot sultry weather of summer usually occurs in the northern hemisphere.

In honor of the season named for our best friends, we are featuring them in this issue. As you will see, the dogs took on most of the work in this issue. Look for your favorite pooch along with the news on the following pages.

What’s Next

Back to school, winter plans, last days of summer? What else would you like to see in September’s issue?

Please let us know by August 20 to be considered for the September issue of the Auxilian. Send to [email protected] or leave it in the folder at the information desk.

Wake me in October.

It is hard to stay this pretty

in all the humidity.

Auxiliary Board

2015

Intrepid manager and buyer for the Glass Garden Gift Shop, Rose Hough, recently returned from a buying trip to the Atlanta International Market, which supplies beautiful items from around the world.

Roses’ three-days of 12-hour shopping marathons, while tiring, proved very fruitful as she selected new and unique items for the hospital gift shop. She has already brought back some purses, scarves, and jewelry items, which started flying off the shelves while they were being unpacked! Soon, guests can look forward to weekly arrivals of new and exciting, tasteful items sure to delight the most discriminating buyers.

Let's face it, shopping sprees are a tough job, but as Rose says with a big smile on her face, “Someone has got to do it.”

The Auxiliary is so grateful to Rose for devoting her time and effort to make the Glass Garden Gift Shop a wonderful and exciting place to shop for visitors, employees, and volunteers. Thanks again, Rose!

A Special Thank You

Spread the Word

We all love volunteering at the hospital. Everyone is always so cheerful and willing to help and we are not asked to do anything we are not comfortable with.

We always need volunteers and what better way to get the word out than to invite your friends and neighbors to a luncheon on Tuesday, Aug. 4 at the Florida Hospital North Pinellas.

Our summer volunteers, Kayla Forde and Atila Isguzar, culinary students of the Jacobson Academy, will prepare lunch in the volunteer conference room. They have been a great help to our grill and bring much fun and laughter each week. "Our volunteers make a difference in the lives of our staff, patients, and their loved ones on a daily basis," Carole Upham says. "Whether through offering a smile and a helpful hand, brightening a day with an item from our Comfort Cart, or providing input and support as a committee member or Auxiliary officer, your service is invaluable." Please put your friends in touch with Carole in the Volunteer Services Office at (727) 942-5072.

My mom Carole was on vacation in Woofaschusetts for a few days visiting her new grandfurbaby, Ruby, our fur cousins, Jemma and Jarvis, aunts, uncles, and more. Of course, there were a lot of two-legged creatures too. She calls them family and says she loves them very much. I know she loves me too.

Now, Mom is back at work and I know everyone is happy about this. That's why I'm giving her a little break and writing her column for her. Besides it's too hot outside to play, so I'll stay in the A/C, look out the window, watch all the neighbors, talk to the squirrel that comes and visits me on the window ledge daily, and sleep on the beds. Especially the big comfy one that Mom and Dad sleep on.

Mom wanted me to remind you to invite your friends and neighbors to the luncheon on Tuesday, Aug. 4. This is for potential volunteers. I think we should put a copy of The Auxilian for them to see. They will certainly will be impressed by my looks and intelligence and want to join our team.

Shelter Lunch and Tour

The SPCA Tampa bay is sponsoring a unique experience to educate and inform the community about their missions, programs, and services.

Learn about animal behavior, take a behind-the-scenes tour through the eyes of the animals and feed the farm animals.

The event is held the first Wednesday of the month from noon to 1 pm at SPCA Ike and Libby Einherst Education Center at 9099 130th Ave N in Largo.

Reserve now at (727) 581-3249 or SPCATAMPABAY.org.

Heat, high bills, crazy drivers, your spouse? Any of these getting to you? Maybe it's time to have your blood pressure checked. Cliff Pendleton, hospital volunteer, holds a free blood pressure screening on Fridays from 9 am to noon. While you are there, strike up a conversation with this interesting man. Cliff has been volunteering for 25 years and is working on his 12,000 volunteer hours. He is past president of the auxiliary and has been with the love of his life for 18 ½ years.

Several years ago, the beautiful tree at the hospital used for holiday lighting was on its last legs. It had to come down and Cliff jumped right in to solve the problem. He went to a nursery out of town and bought an Eastern Red Cedar tree as a replacement. The owner of the nursery said it would survive if watered every day for 30 days. Cliff, being the ever-reliable man that he is, hooked up a hose from the emergency room, hauled it out to the tree for 30 days, and gave it a drink. The tree, as well as Cliff's dedication, is and will be enjoyed by all for many years to come.

Got a Splinter?

Easy fix. Cut a square from a banana peel and put it, white side down, on splinter. Cover with a bandage. The enzymes on the peel draw out the splinter.

No bananas? Spread Elmers Glue on the splinter, let it dry, and peel it off.

These methods will work for you and your 4–legged friend, if you can get it to stay.

Fun Events

Update: Who Dunnit?

The hospital will host, Scrubs & Beyond on Tuesday, September 1. This event will feature uniforms in all the correct department colors as well as comfort shoes and other items for nursing and employee needs!

On Wednesday and Thursday, October 7 and 8, One Touch bedding will hold a sale featuring bedding, sheets, pillows, and blankets. There will be other great gift ideas available.

The Auxiliary receives 20% of the proceeds from both of these sales as donations. What a great way to raise money, buy great gifts, and just have fun. Mark your calendar now.

Keep Pet Food Fresh

You save money by buying your pet's food in bulk, but the kibble sometimes gets soggy. To prevent the problem for these easy steps:

1. Take a few packs of silica gel (the white squares that come in shoeboxes) and place them in the foot of an old pair of pantyhose.

2. Tie a knot and cut off the excess to create a sachet.

3. Pour the food into a storage bin and tape the "sachet" to the underside of the lid.

The silica will absorb the moisture and keep the food fresh. Taping the sachet to the lid helps ensure the packets will not fall into the food and accidentally be ingested.

The long awaited news has arrived! We found the guilty party that bit Pat Stolberg on her big toe. It was her own big, mean, ferocious dog!

Our very own Christine Longley, Director of Community Outreach and Volunteer Services, was recently presented with the Traveling Trophy of Florida Hospital North Pinellas. The trophy is given each month to a department in recognition of the best patient customer service, going above-and-beyond in every realm.

Alan Thomas, director Food Services (Allspice Café), chose Christine as this month's recipient. Christine will choose another deserving person to receive it at the next monthly Leadership meeting.

Christine works in the same capacity at our hospital as she did previously in Cleveland, Ohio at the Cleveland Clinic. Christine says she loves living in Florida doing the work she loves. Even more, she loves spending time with her son, Michael, daughter-in-law, Maliena, and having fun with her two granddaughters, Leilea, 3, and Milani, 1. Michael, MD, FACEP, is Medical Director, Emergency Department at Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel.

With this adorable face, charges were obviously dropped, although restitution of doggie kisses is paid daily. By the way, Pat’s toe is doing fine.

Volunteer Spotlight

SPCA Pet Walk The annual Pet Walk, taking place on Saturday, October 10, is one of the largest fundraisers of the year at the SPCA Tampa Bay. Take your fuzzy pets for a walk for a good cause. For more information, call (727) 581-3249.

Roberta works mainly at the information desk and her friendly smile greets you as you arrive. This is great for patients, employees, and volunteers alike.

Roberta is a mother of five children, five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She loves sports and cards.

Ken and Marie were originally from different parts of New York State but ended up attending the same high school and forming a bond. When Ken joined the Navy, the couple lost touch. But as in every great romance novel, they met again, fell in love, and are living happily ever after in sunny (sometimes) Florida.

They each have two daughters and together they have eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Marie likes to craft and knit and Ken is a reader and likes to work outdoors. They usually work at the information desk and their love for each other extends to everyone who walks through the door. Keep up the good work.

Fido Will Love This Tired of destroyed shoes and trash on the kitchen floor when you wake up? Try this great puzzle ball for a fun change.

Using a serrated knife, cut along the white seam of an old tennis ball. Next, stuff treats inside the ball and toss it to poochie or hide a few balls around the house for him to find. The puzzle ball will keep your buddy entertained as he figures out how to get the treats.

Roberta Johnson has been a volunteer at Florida Hospital North Pinellas since 2006 - nine years. She is originally from Massachusetts and now lives in Tarpon Springs.

Ken and Marie Maxim have been volunteers at Florida Hospital North Pinellas since 1986. They have also been volunteers at Hospice for 35 years, and married for 40 years. They are definitely a couple you can count on. Ken was formerly a banker and Marie, a nurse.

Once the 20th of the month approaches, that is when things get real fun. Mom makes quick runs to the hospital to pick up last minute articles. If you are very lucky, you can sneak a ride.

Dogs Get Bites Too Furry hair coats help somewhat, but mosquitos, flies, and other insects bite dogs and cats too. Biting insects are not only a bother; they may transmit deadly diseases such as heartworm and West Nile Virus. Knowing what not to apply is the most important thing. While DEET is the most effective mosquito repellent for humans, never use on animals. Look for natural options, like lemon juice, instead. Consult your veterinarian before applying anything to your pet.

Dog-Approved People Food We all like to give our dogs a bit of table scraps. Here are our top 10 favorites: 1. Peanut Butter: good source of

protein, heart healthy fats, vitamin B, niacin, and vitamin E.

2. Cooked Chicken: add to regular food for extra protein or as a replacement if you are in a pinch and out of dog food.

3. Cheese: use low fat and do not overfeed.

4. Baby Carrots: good for teeth, high in fiber and beta carotene/vitamin A.

5. Yogurt: no artificial sweeteners, otherwise good for digestive system.

6. Salmon: good source of omega 3 fatty acids to keep coat shiny and healthy.

7. Pumpkin: will help with digestive system and a good source of fiber.

8. Eggs: besides protein, a good source of riboflavin and selenium.

9. Green Beans: use no added salt.

10. Apple Slices: help clean teeth and freshen breath. They are also a good source of fiber and vitamins A and C.

Putting together the newsletter takes a lot of hard work according to my mom, Karen, but I think it looks like a lot of fun. Where else can you go and talk to all kinds of nice people? She never lets me go with her to gather the news, I bet they pet her and give her lots of treats.

After she gets all the articles together, she goes over to my niece Suzi’s house. Over there, they spend hours on the computer doing the layout. Suzi tries to help where she can but usually my sister Lori does the work. She loves doing creative things especially when technology is involved.

Meanwhile, Mickey’s mom, Fran, goes around and takes pictures. Fran helps with editing and proofreading too. Mickey tries his best but his mom says, there are too many corrections to make when us dogs try to type. So usually, he just lays there, waiting for a chance to take over. He thought for sure we would be running the show by now.

Sometimes Mom will ask others to contribute to the newsletter. As my sister Lori says, “Always, consider the source”. Sugar DiNardo Editor in training
