The Irish will look to claim bragging rights again this season but regional re-alignment has left KCHS without a game against the other teams (Farragut, Hardin Valley Academy, Bearden and Christian Academy of Knoxville) in the competition. While the Irish won’t see those teams, they’ll get a shot to play three-time defending Class 4A State Champion Fulton at Blaine Stadium. The Falcons have ended Catholic’s season in both 2013 and 2014. Both those games were in North Knoxville. “We have the capability to win a State Championship and [the game against Fulton] will be a great game,” Catholic coach Steve Matthews said. “It should be a great night.” KCHS’s slate of games includes several playoff teams including the Falcons, Central, Anderson County, Carter and Morristown East. Meanwhile, Farragut went 4-6 last season but the Admirals are looking to bounce back from a sub-par season. Re-alignment has landed the Ads in Region 3-5A where they will play the likes of Oak Ridge, Karns, Clinton, Lenoir City and Campbell County. Farragut also has non-league tilts against Bearden, Powell, Gibbs, South-Doyle and defending Class 5A State Champion West High School. Farragut coach Eddie Courtney may have been surprised that his squad landed in Class 5A, but he still relishes the chance to play for the How the West was Won Trophy. “If you look at it, we’re blessed to have good football teams in West Knox County,” Courtney said. “We may not get the chance to all play each other, but we rec- ognize what everybody does and how hard everybody works.” For Hardin Valley, which won six regular season games last year and had its sixth consecutive win- ning season, winning the bronze ball would be especially reward- ing. That’s because the Hawks have been re-aligned four times since the school first had a varsi- ty football team in 2009. “It would be an honor to win this award because the TSSAA keeps shifting us around,” HVA coach Wes Jones said, “We’ve been re-aligned four times and so we haven’t been able to establish a rivalry game.” The Hawks open the new sea- son against West High on Aug. 20. Hardin Valley also has key games against Maryville, Bearden, Science Hill, South-Doyle, Jefferson County and Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett. Bearden won just one game last year and the Bulldogs are looking to rebound in the second year of Coach Morgan Shinlever’s tenure. Bearden will play Farragut, Karns, Maryville, William Blount, Science Hill, Kingsport Dobyns- Bennett and Science Hill this sea- son and Shinlever is concerned about doing the little things. “If we play hard every Friday night, the wins and losses will take care of themselves,” he said. “It’s great for our kids to play for something like this because it carries bragging rights.” CAK won the award in 2011 and 2012, In those seasons; the Warriors also won Class 3A State Championships. Re-alignment removed Catholic from the sched- ule. Alcoa is still CAK’s big region rival and those two teams have combined to win the last 10 Class 3A titles. While coach Rusty Bradley is hoping that his team can make a return trip to Cookeville, the How the West was Won challenge is one he looks forward to winning. “There are good teams out here and any time you get to play for a championship, it’s always spe- cial.” The Warriors, who made the playoffs after a 5-5 regular sea- son, has key games against Alcoa, Grace Christian Academy, Loudon, Kingston, Clinton and Livingston Academy. Farragut High School’s football team missed the play-offs in 2014. It was the second time in three years that theAdmirals weren’t around in November.

But the Ads, who finished 4-6 last season, didn’t sulk. They simply went back to work.

“Our football team has really donea good job putting last year behindthem,” Farragut coach EddieCourtney said. “It all started back inJanuary when they came into theweight room and went to work.”

Slow starts have plagued FHS inrecent years but Courtney, the Ads’longtime head coach, said his teamcan’t afford another slow start in2015.

“We’ve got to come out playing thisyear because we’ve got some tough games early,” he said,“We can’t start slow early.”

Farragut opens the season on Friday, Aug. 21 at Powellbefore hosting Gibbs on Aug. 28. After that, gamesagainst Oak Ridge and Kingston Pikerival Bearden will follow.

Regional re-alignment haschanged the face of Tennessee HighSchool football this year. Under thenew classification format, theAdmirals have landed in Class 5A.Farragut will compete in Region 3-5A, a league that features Oak Ridge,Campbell County, Lenoir City,Clinton and Karns.

Courtney said he was surprised bywhere his squad landed.

“It is what it is,” Courtney said. “Ithought, with our enrollment, that wewould be 30th or 31st [The 32 largestschools in Tennessee make up the 6Aclassification], but we weren’t.

“We’ll just go at it and see whathappens. The good thing about this isthat we’ll play some teams that wehaven’t played in a long time. Theother good thing is that we’re able tostay close to Knox County and we’llstill get to play or freshman and JVgames on Monday nights.”

Farragut senior Cole Strange does-n’t seem to care about the recent re-classification. The linebacker andtight end just wants to play and put the disappointmentof 2014 in the rear view mirror.

“We’re just waiting to play,” said Strange. “Right now,it’s just anticipation but without a doubt, I think we’regoing to have a good year.

“This senior class won a championship when we werein the eighth grade. It’s one of the more talented groups

to come out of Farragut. If we can play well this year, thenwe can put last year behind us.”

Expectations are high for the Admirals, according toCourtney.

“I think we can win the region,” he said.“[Quarterback] Jacob Naumoff has a year under his belt.I think he’ll be more efficient.”

Top returners for the Admirals include: Tanner Thomas(a senior running back who has been one of the county’stop rushers over the past two seasons); Justin Kirkendall(senior, wide receiver/defensive back); Davis Simmons(junior, wide receiver/defensive end); Michael Travis(senior, wide receiver/defensive back); Naumoff (senior, quarterback); Cole Morgan (senior, wide receiver/defen-sive back); Amon Johnson (junior, running back/line-backer); Tanner Mengel (senior, tight end/linebacker);Alex Tindal (senior, wide receiver/defensive back);Carter Phillipy (senior, kicker/punter); Adam Fulton(junior, quarterback/outside linebacker); HaydenHuckaba (senior, wide receiver/defensive back); JoeDoyle (junior, punter/kicker); Cooper Hardin ( a junior

running back and linebacker whowas injured last season and returnedfor the season finale); Strange; BenHoffman (senior, offensive line-man/defensive lineman); ChanceBolen (junior, offensive lineman/defensive lineman); Clay Jolley (sen-ior, offensive lineman/defensive line-man); Ian Forton (senior, offensivelineman/defensive lineman); JacobWarren (sophomore, tightend/defensive end) and Hunter Fox(senior, offensive lineman/defensivelineman).

During the offseason, Courtneyand his staff also made somechanges. Farragut will run an up-tempo offense and the new attackhas been a hit with the players.

“We like to run the hurry-up,”Naumoff said. “It doesn’t give thedefenses the chance to make thesubstitutions that they would like.”

Courtney noted that his team’sstrengths are a potent kicking gameand depth at the skill positions.Conversely, the main area of concernis depth on both the offensive anddefensive lines.

In the kicking game, Phillipy has emerged as a keyoffensive weapon and he’s expecting big things from theteam this fall.

“My expectation is that everyone will put in 100 per-cent,” he said. “We are going to outwork our opponentsand on game days, we’re going to come out flying.

“We’re going to be going 100 miles per hour.”

As the 2015 high school football season looms, playersat Campbell County have some lofty expectations. TheCougars are looking to make a third consecutive playoffappearance.

The Cougars, who finished 9-3 lastseason, are also seeking a third con-secutive winning season. CampbellCounty won 10 games in 2013 but theCougars haven’t made it out of thesecond round of postseason play inrecent memory.

But senior Austin Raines is look-ing to change all that.

“When I was in the eighth grade, there was a lot of talking about howthese new coaches were going tocome in here and turn everything around, said Raines, who plays running back and linebacker for the Cougars.“There was talk that these guys were not going to let ourtalented players get away to Anderson County. They weregoing to keep them here.

“Well, they’ve turned thingsaround and the players havebought in. We had leaders in prac-tice and suddenly, everybody start-ed coming to every practice. Theyhad never really had leaders onthis team.”

Head coach Justin Price madesome big promises when hearrived in Jacksboro five yearsago. But he’s delivered and madeCampbell County a relevant highschool program and the story thathe and the Cougars have written isnothing short of magnificent.

“We’ve won 19 of our last 23games,” said Price, who will soonbegin his fifth season at CCHS.“Before that, Campbell Countyhad one winning season in 40years.

“Over the last two years, the 19wins have been huge but we don’twant to get complacent. We still have a lot of things thatwe can do to get better. There’s still a lot of work that wecan do.”

That may be the case but Price and his staff have turnedthings around in Jacksboro and it all started with the lit-tle things.

“It all really started in the weight room,” Price said. “Mybrother works with the kids in the weight room and hedoes a good job getting them ready for the season. Wedivide the year into four sections.

“You have preseason, in-season, postseason and offsea-son. You have to do certain things right during each time

of the year to have the chance to be successful when youtake the field on Friday nights. I think that we’ve done agood job changing the culture here because the kids haveall bought in. Now, we have interest in our program. Now,we have the support of the community and the adminis-tration.

Although Raines has lofty goals and expectations for theupcoming 2015 campaign, Price said that he prefers tokeep things simple.

“I think that our expectations are the same as they areevery year,” the coach said. “We try to maximize the talentin and effort from every player. If we do that, then the winswill take care of themselves.

“As long as we maximize what we get out of every play-er, I will be happy.”

Campbell County lost nine offensive starters last sea-son, including two-time all-state quarterback EthanJeffers.

“We’re a young team. We’re junior heavy,” Price said.“Our weakness will probably be on offense. We lost nine

starters there and we’ll have toreplace our two-time all-state quar-terback Ethan Jeffers.”

Traditionally, the Cougars havebeen plagued by lack of depth.Price, however, said that’s not as bigof a concern as it once was.

“We don’t have the depth prob-lems like we used to,” he said.

Top returners include: Raines;Jacob Bunch (senior wide receiv-er/defensive back who’s nursing aleg injury and is hoping to be avail-able by the midpoint of the season);Peyton Webb (junior, offensive line-man/ defensive lineman); MikeRhoades (junior, offensive lineman/defensive lineman and Seth Roberts(junior, wide receiver/ defensiveback.

With the losses of offense,Campbell County will need signifi-cant early contributions from a tal-ented crop of newcomers.

Key newcomers include: Landon Reese (junior, widereceiver/defensive back); Josh Lay (a multitalented juniorwho will see time at quarterback, wide receiver and line-backer); Zach Rutherford a sophomore who may receivethe starting nod under center when the Cougars hostGibbs in the season opener on Aug. 21) and PatrickStrunk (junior, running back/linebacker).

“We have two potential starting quarterbacks and it willbe fun to see the progress of our sophomore ZachRutherford and Josh Lay, who can really be good with hisfeet,” Price said. “Josh will line up all over the placebecause of his speed. We have to get him the ball in space.”

Clinton High School senior wide receiver and defen-sive back Isaiah Vibbert is optimistic about the 2015football season.

“We’re really excited and we’regoing to do some big things thisyear,” said Vibbert, who will soonbegin his senior season for theDragons. “We’re ready to go and ourconfidence level is much higherthan it has been in the past.

“We’re much more confident andour defense is really physical.”

Clinton’s fifth-year coach JoshKerr said his squad aims to be fastand physical.

“We want to be faster and morephysical than our opponents,” Kerrsaid. “We want to work harder than the competition.”

When Kerr arrived at Clinton, he inherited a programthat had struggled. Now, however, the coach is hopingthat the Dragons have turned thecorner.

Clinton went 7-4 and made theplayoffs in 2014 but Kerr isn’t settingany lofty goals out of the gate.

“We may win eight games, we couldwin six or we might win four,” he saidof his squad, which must replace fourstarters on the offensive line. “Ithink we have a chance to be prettygood this year but we’ve got to stayhealthy.”

The Dragons must develop depthon the offensive line but Clinton hasa bevy of talented and experiencedplayers at the skill positions.

“Our top strength is experience atthe skill positions,” Kerr said. “Ourreceivers and the players in thedefensive secondary are experi-enced. They’ve played a lot of foot-ball.

“Experience is our biggeststrength and we have a good seniorclass.”

The rebuilding project in Clintonhas been a long one and that didn’talways sit well with Dragon fans.

“People get nostalgic when it comes to Clinton HighSchool football,” Kerr said. “Clinton has had two reallygood teams lately. We had a good team in 1992 and in2009.

“Otherwise, we’ve had average or below averageteams and we have to avoid those valleys. This thing is

a process and it just doesn’t happen overnight. But wehave a chance to be pretty good if we can stay healthyand develop some depth.”

Clinton senior wide receiver and linebackerChristian Bailey is hoping that the Dragons have theingredients to put together a successful season.

“I feel good about our chances to make the playoffs,”Bailey said. “We’ve worked hard and coach Kerr hasreally turned the program around.

“We expect to win more games this season becausewe have confidence and experience. I think that wecan match up well against the teams in our region.”

Top returners for the Dragons include: Bailey;Vibbert; Tyler Thackerson (senior, quarterback);J’Quan Thomas (junior, wide receiver); Beau Crisp(senior, wide receiver/defensive back); Jason Good(senior, offensive line/defensive line); John Reece(senior, offensive line); Zach Jones (senior, runningback) and S.J. Powers (junior, wide receiver/defensiveback;).

The offensive and defensivefronts will be largely comprised ofjuniors. On the offensive front, theDragons will need contributionsfrom Blake Sherwood, JamalBooker and Josh Burr. Sherwoodand Burr will see time on bothfronts, while Booker will also playlinebacker. Junior linebacker BillyLong will also look to have an earlyimpact.

Top newcomers are CameronWashington (sophomore runningback); Jayven Booker (sophomoreoffensive lineman and linebacker)and junior wide receiver and defen-sive back Demeria Whitt.

Clinton opens its 2015 campaignon Aug. 21 with a crucial Region 3-5A road tilt against Oak Ridge(which went 12-1 last season). TheDragons then have back-to-backhome games against MorristownEast (Aug. 28) and Karns (Sept. 4).Clinton then travels to Rhea Countyon Sept.11 before hosting consecu-tive home contests againstCampbell County (Sept. 18) and

Anderson County (Sept. 25).In October, the Dragons will face Lenoir City (Oct.

2), Christian Academy of Knoxville (Oct.8). After anopen date, the Dragons will travel to Maryville to takeon Heritage on Oct. 23. Clinton will close out its regu-lar season at home against Farragut on Oct. 30.

Karns High School’s football team has endured sometough times recently. The Beavers went 0-10 in 2014and are in the midst of a 14-game losing streak.

Furthermore, Karns hasn’t wonmore than one game in a seasonsince 2012. The Beavers last had awinning season in 2011 when theymade the playoffs and finished 6-5.

Head coach Tobi Kilgore beginshis second season at the school andhe’s hoping to reverse Karns High’srecent fortunes on the gridiron.

But he knows that it won’t beeasy.

“Our biggest weakness is depthand for us, it’s not about the X’s andO’s; it’s about the Jimmys and Joes,” Kilgore said.“We’ve got to get some Jimmys and Joes.

“We have to build depth. The depthis our biggest issue.”

Kilgore inherited a struggling pro-gram but since he arrived, theBeavers have bought in to his system.

“I would say that 98 percent of thekids have bought into what we’redoing,” he said. “As for the other twopercent; those guys probably won’tbe around after our second scrim-mage.”

The players are also hoping toenjoy some success in 2015.

“When you go 0-10, the only wayyou can go is up,” said senior runningback and outside linebacker DevinHarper, who recently committed toOklahoma State. I’m just hoping toget better this year.

“You can only go forward. We’rebasically just waiting for our firstgame. We’re hoping to go forwardbecause you can’t go backwards.”

Karns opens its 2015 campaign athome against Bearden on Aug. 21and don’t look for the Bulldogs tohave much sympathy for the Beavers.Bearden had its own troubles lastyear as it only managed only one win;the season finale against WilliamBlount.

As for Karns, it appears that theBeavers will have depth at the skill positions.

Top returners include: Harper; Stedman Love (sen-ior, wide receiver/defensive back); Greg Tye (senior, quarterback); Zach Hodge (senior, offensivelineman/defensive lineman); Darren Sharp (senior, defensive lineman); Duncan Hunley (senior, offensive

lineman) and Drew Weaver (sophomore, wide receiv-er).

Kilgore acknowledges that the process of buildingdepth is a long one but the Beavers have been able tonab some athletes from the basketball and baseballteams.

“We’ve gotten some athletes out of the hallways, butthe thing is, we’ve got to find them when they’re fresh-men and sophomores and not when they’re seniors,”Kilgore said. “We need to get more bodies and we needto sell the Karns brand to the community.

“We’re excited because we have new uniforms, butthe only way you can sell the Karns brand is to win.”

Injuries forced the Beavers to play 19 freshmen invarsity games in 2014 and the coach hopes that will paydividends this season.

“We had to play 19 freshmen in varsity games lastyear,” Kilgore said. “Those guys will have some experi-

ence.“Senior leadership and our skill

positions will be our strengths. Ourlinemen are all decent, they’re justyoung.”

Hodge, who will anchor both fronts, said he knows that things can only getbetter for the Beavers.

“Any time you go 0-10, it’s hard,” hesaid. “We have to change what weneed to change and keep doing whatworked. This is a different Karns teamthan the other Karns teams.

“We’ll progress and you’ll see a newoffense. Any time you go 0-10, youneed to make some changes.”

Hodge is a veteran and Kilgorenoted that he’ll rely on him for leader-ship. But Hodge is not the only leaderfor the Beavers.

“We have 10 leaders on this team,”Kilgore said. “Guys look up to peoplelike Zach and Devin because they’regetting attention from colleges.

“With those guys, people see that, ifyou can play, colleges will find you. That makes the other guys think teamfirst and they’re not so worried aboutindividual stats or accomplishments.”

Karns has a few veterans who havegone through the lean times, but theBeavers will need some significant

contributions from some newcomers if they are tomake the most of their opportunities.

Top newcomers include: Taylor Everett (junior, widereceiver/defensive back); Jordan Coffin (senior, widereceiver); Issac Cooper (junior, linebacker) and CarsonRousch (senior, wide receiver).

Lenoir City High School’s football team is looking tomake a new start in 2015. The Panthers went 3-8 andmissed the playoffs last season but LCHS played in aCARE-ACTER Star Bowl game.

The bowl game gave the Panthersa shot to salvage a difficult seasonthat saw them end on a low note.LCHS lost its final six games, includ-ing the bowl game where it fell toKing’s Academy 38-30 lastNovember.

“Last year, we went 3-8 and wekind of hit our low,” said senioroffensive and defensive linemanBradley Willis. “But we came in dur-ing the offseason and we got after it.

“We worked hard during this offseason and we workedharder than we’ve ever worked. We’re aggressive and weget after it and we have a great team chemistry.”

Re-alignment got the Panthers out of one of thetoughest conferences in Tennessee.Gone are the games against perenni-al powerhouse Maryville, HardinValley Academy (which has had onlyone losing season in its football pro-gram’s brief seven-year history) anddefending Class 5A State ChampionWest High.

Lenoir City will compete in Region3-5A, a league that features Farragut(which went 4-6 in 2014), CampbellCounty (which went 9-3 last season),Oak Ridge (which made a deep post-season run last year) Clinton, whichalso made the playoffs last seasonand Karns, which has one just onegame over the past two seasons andwas winless in 2014.

“I like the re-alignment because itgot us out of the tough district,”Willis said. “It not that we didn’t likeplaying in that district, we did andwe liked the tough competition, butthis will give us a better chance tocompete and win some ball gamesthis season.

“We’ve had a long offseason and we’re just looking for-ward to hitting some people in different colored jerseys. We’re excited and we think that this is going to be agreat year.”

The new classification also makes things easier forthe Panthers and second-year head coach Jeff Cortez,

who has coached football at LCHS for the past five sea-sons. But Cortez, who was an assistant under formerhead coach Mike Zellar, said he knows that things stillwon’t be easy for his veteran and battle-tested squad.

“We are in a tough region [but] I like that we knowwhat we need to do to get in the playoffs,” Cortez said.“We expect to have a good year.

“We have 20 seniors who played a lot last year.”Lenoir City’s senior class has seen both the ups and

downs of high school football. The Panthers haven’tmade the playoffs since 2013. LCHS also hasn’t had awinning season since 2012, when it finished 9-3.

But 2015 is a new season, according to Willis, who islooking forward to playing his final season for thePanthers.

“It’s going to be more exciting this season because it’sgoing to be a better year,” Willis said. “I remember whenI was a freshman; we played in front of a full stadium. We’re excited because we’ve worked so hard.”

Willis will be a leader on both the offensive anddefensive fronts. Cortez said he’slooking for his team to be able to con-trol the line of scrimmage.

“Our strength is experience onboth the offensive line and the defen-sive line,” Cortez said.

The coach also noted that hissquad lacks depth at several key skillpositions.

Top returners according to Cortezinclude: Willis (who will play at oneof the offensive guard spots. He’ll alsostart on the defensive line); JacobBingham (senior, offensivelineman/outside linebacker) andJacob Cortez (the coach’s son whowill play wide receiver and corner-back).

A key newcomer will be junior ZaneBowden. He will play running backand strong safety.

Despite a lack of depth, Willis saidhe feels that the Panthers have someplaymakers at the wide receiver posi-tions.

“We have some good receivers andthey can make plays,” Willis said. “As an offensive line,we have to put them in positions to make those plays.”

LCHS opens the 2015 campaign at home againstWilliam Blount. The Panthers then travel to Loudon fortheir annual showdown against the Redskins in theBattle of the Bridge.

Oak Ridge High School won 12 football games in 2014and suffered its only loss of the season in the Class 5APlayoffs.

The Wildcats dominated oppo-nents with a spread attack onoffense. But those days are gone andOak Ridge will employ a flex-boneattack while a young offensive linefinds its way through a difficult 2015slate of games.

“”We made the change becausewe have a young offensive line,”Oak Ridge coach Joe Gaddis said.“We also some good fast runningbacks and this new offense fits ourpersonnel.

“We’re just inexperienced on the offensive line and inthe defensive secondary. I think that we’ll be good inthose areas but right now, we just don’t have the play-ing time.”

The Wildcats, who went 12-1in 2015, may be young up frontbut at the skill positions, OakRidge has plenty of experi-ence.

Top returners include: TeeHiggins (a junior wide receiverand cornerback, who hasreceived multiple Division Ioffers); Darel Middleton (sen-ior, tight end/defensive end);Logan Fadnek (senior, quar-terback); Jordan Dunbar (sen-ior, quarterback/wide receiv-er); T.J. Allison (senior, run-ning back); Jaylen Nickerson(senior, running back); JaredVerner (senior, center); AlexAlcorn (senior, defensive end);Matt Warmbrod (senior, insidelinebacker); Adam Mano-okian (senior, inside line-backer); Gavin Warrington9senior, safety) and BrandonNickle (senior, kicker/punter).

Expectations, as always, are high for the Wildcats.

“We want a StateChampionship,” Higgins said.“We’re going to play some good teams so we’re going tohave to stay motivated and work hard.

“We’re going to play some good teams. We have toplay Sevier County, Webb and Dobyns-Bennett. Wehaven’t really seen those teams but those will be somegood match-ups.”

Oak Ridge will compete in Region 3-5A and theWildcats will see some familiar foes. Those leagueopponents include Clinton, Karns, Campbell County,Farragut (a regular non-league team on ORHS’s sched-ule in the past); and Lenoir City.

Oak Ridge will also have some tough games outsidethe region. The Wildcats will face county rivalAnderson County (which made the playoffs last sea-son), South-Doyle, (which made a deep postseason run

in 2015), Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett (another playoffteam last season), Sevier County and the three-timedefending Division II-A State Champion Spartans.

That slate is tough but that hasn’t changed theexpectations in Oak Ridge.

“We expect to make a deep postseason run,” saidWarmbrod, who will also play offensive tackle in addi-tion to his inside linebacker duties. “Our schedule isquite a bit tougher but I still think we can have a real-ly good season.

“We’ve been working really hard all summer and westill have to learn a new offense; but by the time theseason starts we’ll have it down.”

Gaddis, who coached the Wildcats during the 1990sand returned three years ago, agreed.

“Expectations are always high at Oak Ridge HighSchool and this year is no exception,” Gaddis said. “Wenever expect to have a down year and we don’t want tohave an average season.

“This year, we have a strong senior class. We’ll berunning some option anddoing some other stuff andthat just fits us.

“We have some speed andwe have an extremely smalloffensive line.”

In addition to the veteranand savvy returners, OakRidge has a talented crop ofnewcomers that must makean early impact if theWildcats are going to maxi-mize their success.

Top newcomers include:Jaret Miner (junior, runningback/defensive back);JaMalcolm Henderson (jun-ior, noseguard); AdariusSimpson (sophomore, run-ning back/defensive back);Kyndall Clark (junior, out-side linebacker) and ChaseKimbro (junior, outside line-backer).

Re-alignment has changedthe football landscape butthe changes don’t botherGaddis.

“I’m fine with (re-align-ment),” Gaddis said. “I just don’t really get caught upin that stuff.

“You have to play who’s across from you.”The Wildcats open with a crucial Region 3-5A tilt

when they host Clinton on Aug. 21. Oak Ridge thentravels to face the Indians in Kingsport (Aug. 28).ORHS then visits the Admirals (Sept.4) and AndersonCounty (Sept. 11). Oak Ridge returns home to take onLenoir City on Sept. 18 On Sept. 24 the Wildcats willinvade Sevier County before closing out the road por-tion of the schedule at Karns.

ORHS finishes the season with home tilts againstMcMinn County (Oct. 9), Webb (Oct. 23) and CampbellCounty on Oct. 30.

Bearden High School has hit some lean times recentlyon the gridiron. The Bulldogs went 1-9 in 2014 but man-aged to win the season finale against William Blount lastyear.

The victory over the Governorsgave Bearden the shot of adrenalinethat carried the Bulldogs throughthe long offseason.

“That win last year really helpedus,” said senior center Kaleb Griffin.“We’re ready to start anew.”

Griffin is part of a senior classthat has experienced the best andworst of high school football. Thatsenior class is looking to reverse theprogram’s recent fortunes.

“We want to be a powerhouse in [Class] 6A football,”Griffin said. “We know that it’s not going to happenovernight.

“But we want to take biggersteps this year. The program haschanged. We’ve been a little moreintense this year and we’ve hadleadership and we didn’t alwayshave that last year.”

Bearden wants to win gamesthis year but second-year headcoach Morgan Shinlever is keep-ing things simple.

“We want to be the best teamthat we can be,” he said. “We wantto play as hard as we can everyFriday night and the wins willtake care of themselves.”

This season, the Bulldogs willhave only two players who willplay on offense and defense. Thatapproach is already paying divi-dends.

“We’re a single-platoon team,”Shinlever said. “We only have twoplayers that will play both ways.We wanted to do this because weare a bigger school.

“We had a scrimmage [on July31] and that really helped us. Oneof the other team’s drives lasted 23 minutes and we wereable to keep them out of the end zone. We want to be aone-platoon team but we’ve got to have depth.”

Senior quarterback Cam Jones started all 10 gamesunder center for the Bulldogs in 2014 and Shinlever ishoping that his field general will have a breakout seasonthis year.

“He’s the best quarterback around here that nobodyknows about.”

Jones is one of several key returners for Bearden.Other top returners include: Griffin (who will anchor theoffensive line from the center position); Jordan Ferguson(junior, wide receiver/defensive back); Cole Phillips(senior, offensive lineman); Cameron Miller (junior, line-backer); Spencer Jefferies (senior, defensive end) andTyler Cooper (junior, defensive end).

The offensive and defensive fronts may determine howmuch success that the Bulldogs will have this season.

“We have a senior-heavy offensive line and we haveexperience on the defensive line,” Shinlever said.

Some newcomers including; Zack Stephens (senior, defensive lineman), Dakota Davis (junior, offensive line-man) and junior Bryce Robertson (a junior, safety) willlook to make an early impact for Bearden, which willopen its 2015 campaign at Karns on Aug. 21.

The Beavers have had their own recent woes, soShinlever knows that the seasonopener will present a challenge asKarns went 0-10 in 2014.

“They’ve had their problems andhard times too,” Shinlever said ofthe Beavers.

The Bulldogs will host Powell intheir home opener on Aug. 28. ThePanthers have also had recent trou-bles. Powell will be coached byRodney Ellison, who is Powell’sfifth coach in as many seasons.

Bearden will then open regionalplay at Hardin Valley Academy onSept. 4 before traveling to ClaboField to entertain traditionalKingston Pike rival Farragut in anon-league tilt on Sept. 11.Bearden will play William Blount(Sept. 18) and Maryville (Sept. 25)at home. Bearden then has twostraight road conference gamesagainst Bradley Central andKingsport Dobyns-Bennett. TheBulldogs will return home to playScience Hill before closing out theregular season at Jefferson County.

Despite only being in the second year of a majorrebuilding process, Jones is eagerly anticipating the 2015campaign.

“I’m looking forward to the season and I’m hoping thatwe can get back and win some games,” he said. “We havea pretty good offense and a good defense.

Christian Academy of Knoxville’s football team hasendured slow starts in each of the last two seasons as itsyoung players struggled to find theirway early.

Those young players are now veter-ans and the Warriors can ill afford aslow start in 2015 as they will face apair of tough early tests againstLivingston Academy and GraceChristian Academy.

“We’ll have to have a fast startbecause our first two games areagainst Livingston Academy andGrace,” CAK coach Rusty Bradleysaid. “We haven’t set any goals as farof number of wins or a State Championship.

“We have to take things one week at a time and onegame at a time. We have to go outand get better each day.”

One of those seasoned veteransis junior quarterback Cole Smith, who took over the starting spotmidway through the 2013 season asa freshman. He was immediatelythrust into a leadership role. Hisnumbers in 2013 and 2014 weretruly astonishing and he’s lookingfor big things when the Warriorshit the gridiron in 2015 as he has abevy of potent offensive weaponsback from last season.

“We didn’t lose a wide receiver,”Smith said. “We have all of our skillplayers back on offense.

“We trust each other and it’sbeen a long offseason. We’veworked really hard. We have 17seniors back and we’re ready tojust go play.”

CAK returns wide receiversPhillip Nichols, Austin Pope and Baylor Caughorn fromlast year’s squad, which went 7-6 and rebounded to reachthe state quarterfinals before being eliminated by long-time rival Alcoa, which along with the Warriors, has com-bined to win the last 10 Class 3A State Championships.

CAK also returns senior running backs MichaelThompson and Cole Welch, who emerged as versatilethreats during their junior season last year.

Other top returners include: Ryan Mills (junior, offen-sive lineman); Ben Buchanan (senior, offensive lineman);David Van der Steeg (senior, offensive lineman); JohnZavracky (senior, defensive tackle); Bo Layton (senior,

defensive end); Jake Newton (senior, inside linebacker);Craig Carter (senior, outside linebacker); Wyatt Eaton(senior, outside linebacker); Davis Hatmaker (senior, wide receiver) and Jackson Pegram (sophomore, corner-back).

If the Warriors are to duplicate their recent success, they will have to rely heavily on savvy senior players.

“A big key for us is senior leadership,” Smith said. “Wehave senior leaders on both offense and defense andwe’ve all been together for a long time.”

Newton, CAK’s defensive captain agreed.“We’ve all gotten better as we’ve grown up over the last

three years,” Newton said. “We have to be leaders. I’m athree-year starter and a two-year captain, so I know that.

“As a [middle] linebacker, everybody looks up to you. You’ve got to be a leader and a coach on the field. My jobis a lot like Cole’s; it’s just on the other side of the ball.”

The Warriors will also benefitfrom a talented crop of newcomersthis season. That group must con-tribute if CAK is going to maximizeits success.

Top youngsters according toBradley are: Caleb Unkefer (a jun-ior offensive and defensive line-man who transferred from Alcoa);Chase Blackburn (junior, offensiveguard); Haydn Tanner (a juniorfree safety who transferred fromKnoxville Catholic High School);Evan Nunley (sophomore, corner-back); West Shuler (sophomore, inside linebacker) and StewartHowell (freshman, widereceiver/outside linebacker).

The Warriors are battle-testedand Bradley, who is his ninth sea-son as head coach, makes no bonesabout the fact that his experiencedteam must avoid a sluggish start.

“We’ve got to play well early,” he said. “There’s no ques-tion about it.

“We have a great group of seniors and they are all pret-ty experienced and they’ve all worked hard. I couldn’thave asked for them to work much harder.”

Despite a strong core, CAK has areas of concern.“Our biggest weakness is depth and it always is and

that’s just because of the size of our school,” Bradley said.“We have to develop depth.

“We’ll have to have some [younger] guys step up onoffense and defense.”

Newton echoed the coach’s sentiments.

Hardin Valley Academy has enjoyed some modest suc-cess in its first seven seasons as a varsity football team. The Hawks have made the playoffs in five of their firstseven seasons. But postseason success has eluded HVA.

“We’ve been to the playoffs fivetimes but we haven’t won a playoffgame,” said Hardin Valley footballcoach Wes Jones, who undertook thechore of building the program fromscratch when the school opened in2008. “We want to get that first play-off win. It will be big for our program.

“That is a team goal and a programgoal for us.”

Although the Hawks have been acontender every year since 2010,things have been easy. Hardin Valley, which went 1-9 in 2009 (its first varsity season), haschanged leagues four times since its inception.

“We’ve changed leagues four times and that reallymakes it hard on a new school because we really haven’tbeen able to establish a rivalrygame,” Jones said. “At first, Karnswas our rival. Then, we had a littlerivalry with Bearden. Then, we hada small rivalry with Farragut.”

Regional re-alignment this sea-son eliminated games with theBeavers and Admirals. Now onlyBearden and West High remain onthe schedule. The Hawks andBulldogs will play in Region 4-6A.Karns and Farragut have moved toRegion 3-5A. Hardin Valley, howev-er, will open the season at homeagainst West High on Thursday,Aug. 20. West is the defendingClass 5A State Champion and theRebels have been the one consis-tent foe on HVA’s schedule.

The Hawks, who went 6-5 in2014, are looking to build onrecent success and senior runningback and defensive back IssiahAguero has big plans for the newseason. He acknowledges, howev-er, that the success must come insmall increments. He’s hoping thatthe small victories will culminatein a trip to Cookeville --- and ultimately a Class 6A StateTitle.

“I feel like we can go in and win every week,” Aguerosaid. “But we’re focused on things one game at a time.

“We want to go 15-0 and win a State Championship. Wewant a ring but in order to get that, we have to take thingsone game at a time and we have to go 1-0 every week.”

Hardin Valley faces a tough road in 2015. It opens at

home against West and the Rebels earned their champi-onship ring last season.

“We’ve got West first and I don’t think Hardin Valley hasever beaten West.”

After playing the Rebels, the Hawks will have an opendate before hosting the Bulldogs in the region opener forboth schools and things won’t get any easier after that. After the bye week, the Hawks hit the road for three con-secutive weeks. HVA’s extended road trip opens at South-Doyle on Sept. 11. HVA then travels to Kingsport for aregional showdown against Dobyns-Bennett. The Hawksconclude that road trip at Powell on Sept. 25.

HVA returns home for a game against Science Hill onOct. 7 before traveling to Jefferson County (Oct. 9) andBradley Central on Oct. 16.

The Hawks then host defending Class 6A Champ andperennial power Maryville. HVA closes the regular seasonby entertaining William Blount.

Hardin Valley senior wide receiver and defensive line-man Joe DeFur said that he’s looking forward to histeam’s difficult slate of games, which includes dates with

a pair of defending StateChampions.

“It’s good to play those types ofgames because when you play andbeat the best teams, you can onlyget better,” DeFur said. “We reallywant to build on the success thatwe had last year.

“The school had a great spring. Our baseball team won a StateChampionship. Our softball and[boys] soccer teams went to state. That was really good to see butwe’re hungry to have some of thatsuccess of our own.”

HVA has a bevy of veteran play-ers. Top players include: DeFur;Aguero; Tim Frizzell (a senior run-ning back and defensive back whoreceived all-region honors last sea-son); Isaac Aguero (Issiah’s twinbrother, who emerged as one ofKnox County’s top playmakers lastseason as a running back anddefensive back); Gavin Greene(junior, quarterback); Jason Love(senior, wide receiver/defensiveback); Tyler Lingerfelt (senior,

wide receiver/defensive back); Gabe Dew (senior, offen-sive lineman/defensive lineman); Joe Reed (senior, offen-sive lineman/middle linebacker); Elijah Jones (junior, offensive lineman/defensive lineman); Nick Buckles (sen-ior, running back/defensive back); Hayden Brophy (sen-ior, offensive lineman/noseguard); Thomas Clay (junior, wide receiver/defensive back) and Andrew Merritt (jun-ior, offensive lineman/defensive lineman).

Knoxville Catholic High School has won 10 footballgames in each of the last two seasons but the Irish justcan’t get past Fulton in the playoffs.

KCHS, which went 10-2 last sea-son, suffered a season-ending loss tothe eventual Class 4A StateChampion Falcons. Fulton, whichalso won the 2013 title, eliminatedCatholic in the State Semifinals onits way to Cookeville.

Time will tell if the Falcons willend the Irish’s season again butnow the two schools are Region 2-4A rivals and they’ll collide atBlaine Stadium on Sept. 18 andIrish senior center Logan Punch ishoping that seeing the Falcons inWest Knoxville might make a difference,

“They’ve ended our season that last two years. [In2013], we had a chance to win that game,” Punch said.“Last year, things just didn’t go our way. But those twogames were on the road and they hadtheir fan support.

“That was a great atmosphere butthey haven’t played at our place. They have their fans but we’ve gotours too. They haven’t played atKnoxville Catholic High School andthey haven’t seen our atmosphere.”

For his part, KCHS third-year headcoach Steve Matthews is anticipatingthe matchup with the Falcons. Buthe also knows that the Irish musttake care of some other businessfirst.

“That should be a great night,”Matthews said of Sept. 18. “But wehave some other tough games.

“Fulton and Anderson County arein our region and Anderson Countywill throw the ball all over the place. Our non-league schedule includesMorristown East, [Christ Presbyter-ian Academy], Notre Dame, Belfry,(Ky.) and Cloudland.

Catholic also has regional tiltsagainst Central, Carter and UnionCounty. Every team in Region 2-4,save Union County made the playoffs in 2014.

Irish senior defensive lineman Austin Rowan said helikes the new regional alignment.

“This is different but it’s a good different,” Rowansaid. “This should be exciting because these are newteams and we’ll all get to see a lot of new faces.

“This year will be our year. We have good athletes onthe field and I feel like we click so well together.”

Matthews also has lofty expectations but he said that

time will tell how far the Irish can go.“It’s really too early. It’s too soon to tell how we’ll be,”

said Matthews, a former NFL quarterback with theKansas City Chiefs, Jacksonville Jaguars and TennesseeTitans. “I think we have the ability to compete for aState Championship.

The first order of business for Matthews and the Irishis to find a starting quarterback. Zac Jancek played thatrole over the last couple of seasons. He graduated andhas moved on to the University of Tennessee.

Four players, including senior Cooper Edenfield, jun-ior, Chase Cunningham, sophomore Jack Sompayrac andfreshman Ryan McDonald all entered summer practiceswith a shot at replacing Jancek.

“We have four good players battling for the startingquarterback spot,” Matthews said. “We’ll have to find astarting quarterback. “Our other weakness will be in thedefensive line.

“We’ll have to replace some very good players on thedefensive front. We may have to rotate a bunch of guys inand play defensive line by committee.”

Rowan said he looks forward to play-ing with the youngsters on Catholic’sdefensive line.

“Both our offensive and defensivelines are pretty good,” he said. “We’llhave a lot of new faces on the defensiveline. But I think those guys can playand I think they’ll be really good.”

Matthews said that his team’s pri-mary strength is on the offensive line.

Top returners for the Irish include:Amari Rodgers (a junior running backand defensive back who has alreadyverbally committed to play at theUniversity of Southern California);Cade Mays (a sophomore offensive line-man who has received multipleDivision I scholarship offers); ChaseKeuerschen (a junior wide receiver anddefensive back who has emerged as apotent and versatile playmaker in eachof the last two seasons); Tony Scott(junior, outside linebacker); Rowan;Punch and Augie Fortune (senior, line-backer).

The Irish lost several key players lastseason and their respective departures

left some voids. But a host of key newcomers will look tomake an immediate impact in 2015.

Top newcomers include: Jeffrey Wood (junior, runningback/defensive back); Morgan Ernst (sophomore, run-ning back/defensive back); Charlie Connores (junior, defensive lineman) and Cam Blakely (sophomore, widereceiver/outside linebacker).

The Irish open the 2015 campaign at Morristown Easton Saturday, Aug. 22.

The Lions, who played a juniorvarsity and freshman schedule in2014, will play their historic firstgame at Grace Baptist inChattanooga on Friday, Aug. 21.That will be the first of nine gamesfor the Lions in 2015.

The following week, ConcordChristian, which will compete inRegion 1-1A, will host Sale Creek inits first-ever home game at BobLeonard Park.

Excitement is the order of the day for the Lions butit may be a long tough seasonfor the Lions, who will dressonly 18 players for the seasonopener.

“Depth is our issue,” ConcordChristian coach Troy Flemingsaid. “This is our first year ofvarsity and football is a toughgame and I’m just proud of all ofthe kids who have stuck thisthing out.

“For most of these kids, thisis the first time that they’veever played organized football. They didn’t play youth footballand we have to get them in adifferent mindset and teach thefundamentals. I think I havetwo kids on the team who haveplayed youth football.”

Expectations are simple forthe Lions and success in thisfirst season likely won’t bemeasured solely on wins andlosses. Effort and toughnesswill be the measuring sticks forConcord Christian, which willbe the first team to make a var-sity debut since Hardin ValleyAcademy first took the field in2009.

“I’m looking for toughness, both physical and mental,” said Fleming, who playedfor Phillip Fulmer at the University of Tennesseebefore moving on to the National Football League.“[The players] are chipper but they’re young when it

comes to football experience.“I’m also looking for growth in football knowledge.

We have to continue to show them how to play.”No one knows what the 2015 campaign will hold for

Concord Christian and Fleming acknowledges that hestill has some work to do in his program.

“I’m two years away from having a solid base of foot-ball,” said Fleming, who previously served as an assis-tant coach at Anderson County High School.

The Lions may struggle early and the players knowthat, but that hasn’t dampened the spirits aroundKnox County’s newest football team.

“It’s nice to have a football team and it’s nice to playa varsity schedule,” said senior quarterback MannyJones. “We just want to show everyone that we’ve gotwhat it takes to play football.

“I’m just going to give it all that I have. Even thoughI’m a senior, this is going to be the only season that I

have. This is the only seasonthat I have, but I’ll take it overnothing.”

Top players for the Lionsinclude Jones; Brian Turbyfill(senior, wide receiver/defensiveback); Noah Collins (senior, tight end/middle linebacker);Nathan Hudson (senior, widereceiver/defensive back); CalebBethel (junior, runningback/strong safety) and JonRoberts (offensivelineman/defensive lineman).

Like Jones, who will likely bea versatile weapon for theLions, Collins is just happy tohave an opportunity to playhigh school football.

“I’ve played basketball,” hesaid. “But if I’d known how foot-ball was, I would’ve playedsooner. I just didn’t know howfun it would be.

“Football also teaches you alot of life lessons. It developsmental toughness and it teach-es you about sticking withsomething.”

Hudson agreed.“Our biggest goal is to grow,”

he said. “We don’t have thesubs, so we’ll have to keep people on the field.

“We have to help the younger kids grow becausewe’re laying the foundation for Concord Christian foot-ball.”

Grace Christian Academy has made deep postseasonfootball runs in each of the last three seasons. The Rams, however, have failed to win — or even play for — a StateChampionship.

But Grace, which went 10-4 andreached the state semifinals in 2014,is vowing that this will be the yearthat it finally ends the season on thebig stage in Cookeville.

“Of course, it’s State Champion-ship or bust around here. It alwaysis,” said senior wide receiver anddefensive back Wade Sluss. “Ourgoal this year is to get to the StateChampionship game and win it.

“This is going to be the year. Thisis going to be the year because ourchemistry is good and we have a lot of leadership. We havea lot of experience in the playoffs. We made the [state]quarterfinals in 2012. We made thesemifinals in 2013 and we madethe semifinals again last year.”

Although Sluss has lofty expec-tations, he knows things won’t beeasy because the Rams will likelybe [as always] the class of theirregion. GCA will compete inRegion 2-AA. Grace’s league oppo-nents include traditional rivalRockwood, Tellico Plains, OliverSprings, Wartburg, Sweetwaterand Austin-East.

“We’re always one of the topteams in our league so we have tobring or A-game,” Sluss said. “Wehave to respect our opponentsbecause every time we play some-body, it’s their Super Bowl.”

Like Sluss, Rams’ coach RandyMcKamey has high expectationsfor his squad in 2015.

“We shoot for a StateChampionship every year,” saidMcKamey, who will soon begin hisninth season as Grace Christian’shead coach. “It’s like I always tellpeople, football is too hard, too hotand too time consuming not to finish on top and that’swhy we strive to win state every year.”

The Rams will enter the 2015 season as one of thestate’s hungriest teams. Grace has come so close to nab-bing an opportunity to play for a State Title only to comeof short in each of the last three seasons.

“We expect to win a State Championship and this sen-ior class has really worked hard,” said senior wide receiv-er and defensive back Jimmy Clevenger, who played quar-terback last season for the Rams. “We have a target on our

backs and that’s fun. We enjoy it.“We want to win it all but we know that it’s a long 15-

week process and we know that we have to continue to getbetter every week. We also know that if we don’t play ourbest; we can make somebody else’s season if they beatus.”

The Rams are striving for perfection and nowhere isthat more apparent than on both the offensive and defen-sive fronts.

“Our goal is to win the State Championship this year,”said senior offensive and defensive lineman Dylan Todd.“If we don’t play our best in every game, we will not meetand attain that goal.

“We are a big family but I don’t mind saying that someplayers on our offensive line really need to step up andbring more effort. They need to bring their best effort. They really need to pick it up.”

Grace has a talented group of veterans who have beenthrough some tough gridiron battles. Top returners

include: Clevenger (who will seetime at running back and widereceiver on offense. He’ll play atone of the corner spots in thedefensive secondary); Tyler Beck(senior, fullback/linebacker); Sluss(running back/wide receiver/safe-ty); Todd (a senior offensive anddefensive lineman, who is a three-year starter); Robbie Wyndham(senior, wide receiver/safety);Nathan Petit (senior, runningback/cornerback); Nick White(senior, offensive lineman); HaydenCoffeman (wide receiver/ line-backer) and Rhett Elwood (senior, tight end/ defensive end).

Grace will also have the servicesof a newcomer in senior runningback and wide receiver ColtonTreischmann. He moved to EastTennessee from St. Louis.

“Colton is fast and we’ll have toget him the ball in space,”McKamey said.

Grace’s veteran coach said thathis team’s major strength lies in itssenior class.

“We have leadership and we’re experienced,” McKameysaid. “We have 22 seniors and they will provide leadershipfor us this year. But I’m always thinking ahead and wehave eight juniors who’ll have to step in and lead nextyear.”

On the flip side, McKamey said that areas of concerninclude depth and inexperience in the kicking game.

“Any time you coach at a small school, depth is a con-cern,” he said. “We’re pretty good at all 11 positions onboth sides of the ball, but we have to stay healthy.”

Webb School of Knoxville’s football team has made ahabit of winning State Championships recently. TheSpartans have won three consecutive Division II-Atitles and four over the last five years.

Webb’s senior class has a chanceto win four titles and that’s just whatMason Staten wants to do.

“We’ve won the StateChampionship in the past and theexpectation is that we that we’ll dothe same,” said Staten, a senior widereceiver and defensive back for theSpartans, who went 9-3 in 2014 enroute to capturing a third consecu-tive gold ball in Cookeville.

If Webb is to win another StateChampionship, it must do so whiletrying to rebuild.

“This is the youngest team that we’ve had here sincethe first year I coached,” said coach David Meske, whowill soon begin his 31st season as the Spartans’ headcoach. “We’re a very, veryyoung team and we havean extremely small seniorclass.

“We have a very smallroster and I expect us totake some lumps early inthe season. But I don’tmind that. I think we’llbe a better team later inthe season than we willbe early.”

The Spartans open theseason on Friday, Aug. 21on the road against two-time defending Class 3AState Champion Alcoa. That will be a stiff earlytest but no one at Webb isgoing to back down fromthe Tornadoes.

“We’re looking to winanother StateChampionship and we’relooking to win games,”said senior running backand defensive backAlexander Berube. “We’regoing to Alcoa to win.

“I’m looking forward tomy senior season. It willbe a new challenge for us because we don’t have a lotof depth. We have a small roster but we’re a tight-knitteam and we have a great chemistry.”

What the Spartans also have is a winning traditionand Meske’s hoping that the 2015 can write its chapterand leave its legacy.

“Our biggest strength is our tradition,” said Meske.“There’s pressure on these kids to be successful and Ithink that’s a positive thing.”

In addition to their opening-week showdown against

the Tornadoes, the Spartans also have tilts againstGrace Christian Academy, Christian Academy ofKnoxville and a late-season game against Oak Ridge. Sothings will be difficult.

“We’re just looking forward to a chance to play,” sen-ior Andrew Craig said. “Last year’s seniors kind oftoughened us up a little so we’ll be ready for those biggames this year.”

The first order of business for the Spartans will befinding a replacement for quarterback Brock Beeler, who’s now at East Tennessee State University.

Three youngsters are competing for the starting spot.Sophomore Hunter Green, Beeler’s backup in 2014looks to get the start in Blount County. But freshmenAlec Boruff and Kaden Armes are also vying for theposition.

“We have three talented kids competing for startingquarterback,” Meske said. We have a sophomore inHunter Green and two good freshmen. Hunter looks tobe the starter at this point.

Webb must also replace Brant Mitchell (now atGeorgia Tech), linemenCole Sams (now atDavidson), Dustin Nickle(also at ETSU) and GageThompson, who’s now atMaryville College. Tightend Liam Willoughby hasnow moved on to CentreCollege. Those departureswill leave voids, but somenew young guys are look-ing to replace those stars.

“We have some goodyoung kids,” Meske said.“We also have some goodskill kids.

Top returners for theSpartans include: Craig(tight end/defensive end);Staten; Berube; TommyJordan (junior,f u l l b a c k / l i n e b a c k e r ) ;Juwaan Jefferson (junior,running back/defensiveback); Green and AndrewFavaro (junior,kicker/punter).

Some key departureswill create opportunitiesfor some newcomers tomake an immediate

impact for the Spartans.“We want to win but we’re looking forward to seeing

some of these young grow and step up.”The Spartans have a bevy of talented newcomers and

Meske expects the newcomers to make an early impact.“Our key weakness is depth and that’s always a con-

cern at a small school,” he said. “But we have somereally talented young kids.

“These kids will have to grow and our seniors knowwhat they have to do.”

The University of Tennessee enjoyed some modestsuccess on the gridiron in 2014. The Volunteers won theTaxSlayer Bowl convincingly and constructed their firstwinning season since 2009.

But to third-year head coachButch Jones, that’s all ancient his-tory.

“I just talked to my staff aboutseeing things through new eyes,”Said Jones, who guided the BigOrange to a 7-6 record last seasonand coached the Vols to a dominat-ing 45-28 victory over Iowa in aJanuary bowl game. “Each team isdifferent and each year is differ-ent.

“What you accomplished lastyear doesn’t mean anything now. This is a new year andthat’s what great about college football. This is Team119 and Team 119 hasits own identity andTeam 119 hasn’t takenany snaps yet.”

Tennessee’s 2015squad may be yet totake the field but theVolunteers enteredAugust workouts withtwo things that theyhaven’t had in thefirst two years ofJones’ tenure onRocky Top.

UT, which opens its2015 season againstBowling Green inNashville on Sept. 5,has a true startingquarterback in juniorJoshua Dobbs. Inaddition to that, theVolunteers are actual-ly at least two deep atevery offensive lineposition.

“We will enter withJosh as our startingquarterback and hecontinues to grow andhis leadership contin-ues to get better,”Jones said.“Leadership is influ-ence and that’s whyyou have good leadersand bad leaders.

“We’re also two deep at every offensive line positionand this is the first time that we’ve been able to say that

as a staff at Tennessee.”Two former are prep standouts will occupy spots on

that now much deeper and more experienced offensiveline. Redshirt senior Kyler Kerbyson (a 2011 KnoxvilleCatholic High School graduate) started and played inall 13 games last season. Redshirt sophomore BrettKendrick (a 2014 Christian Academy of Knoxville grad-uate who won a pair of Class 3A High School StateChampionships with the Warriors) made two starts in2014 and played in all of the team’s games.

Both Kerbyson and Kendrick have seen playing timeat all five offensive line spots and both are glad to seethe Vols have more depth on the offensive front.

“It’s great to have more depth and it makes us all feelmore comfortable going to practice,” Kerbyson said. “Ienjoy teaching the younger kids on the team.

“They push me and they make be better the same waythat I made Zach Fulton and Ja’Wuan James betterwhen I was a younger player.”

Kendrick said thathe’s also seen benefitsto having more offen-sive linemen.

“Depth is great andcompetition is great,”he said. “I’m gettingthe chance to play allfive positions. Ourdepth has reallyimproved.

“We’re also gettingbetter because weplay against a greatdefensive line everyday in practice. Wehave good de3fensivetackles and two reallygood defensive ends.Sometimes, it’s toughbecause they’re allsuch great players.”

Tennessee’s depthwas put to the test intraining camp as theVolunteers sustainedseveral minor injuries.

But Jones said thatbumps and bruises arejust part of trainingcamp. And one Volwith area ties knowsall too well thatinjuries are part offootball.

Wide receiver andformer CAK standout Josh Smith has battled injuries
