4 is the magic number right now! Why? Well, because:

1. The deadline to earn the remaining $500,000 of the $1.5M matching gift is 4/14/14Ñall pledges will be doubled, totaling up to $1M!

2. If we earn enough before the end of the matching gift period to receive the full match, we will have raised WELL OVER $4M! 3. We are currently at over 40% congregant participation in Building Our FutureÑand we hope everyone will participate!

4. If everyone makes their pledge B4 they read the 4 questions on 4/14/14, THAT'S what will make this number different from

When we announced last Yom Kippur that we had received a matching gift of $1,500,000 for Building Our Future, the deadline of Passover, 2014 seemed so far away. Thanks to many very generous donors, we have earned just over $1M of this matching gift! The deadline is rapidly approaching now and we need YOUR help to earn the remaining $500,000. If you havenÕt already made your donation/pledge, or if you are inspired to give even more to help us reach this important milestone, please join us in Building Our Future by 4/14/14. Every additional gift, no matter what the size, will help and is greatly appreciated!

---four for our CHILDREN---four for our FAMILIES---four for our NOW---four for our FUTURE!

Payments can be made for up to five years but your total pledge will be matched if we receive your donation form by 4/14/14. Remember that donations are tax-deductible and qualify for the Colorado ChildCare Tax Credit.

This is the Home we built. ALL of us!“Let each person whose heart so moves him or her bring donations….Let them make for Me a sanctuary so that I may dwell among them.”

(Exodus 25:2, 8)

As I write this, approximately 40% of Temple Sinai families have made a contribution or a pledge to the Building Our Future campaign. The generosity we are witnessing is absolutely inspiring. Note that, in keeping with the time honored tradition of building our sacred places with only voluntary offerings, our building project is based solely on those gifts and donations made by those whose hearts are so moved.

Our ancestors understood that it is not enough to simply collect the funds necessary to build a temple. Rather, it is essential for every family to know that it played an important part in the building and maintenance of our house of worship and school. How wonderful it would be for each one of us to be able to worship, study, socialize and celebrate with friends and family in the newly-renovated Temple Sinai, feel that tremendous sense of pride and say with great satisfaction, “This is the Jewish home I helped to build!”

It is not often that we have the opportunity to be a part of creating a sacred place, but now is the time and here is the place. Ideally, 100% of our families will make a contribution. Yes, it is understood that many families will only be able to make a very modest contribution, but it is not the amount of the

contribution that matters. Rather, it is the gesture from the heart that matters. A holy place is built through the offerings of our hearts and every heart, every soul, and every family matters.

As spring begins to break through the cold and renewal is in the air, we see again the cycle of life inviting us to create and build for the future. The springtime celebrations of Purim and then Passover bring us together to remind us of the lessons impressed on our souls: that every generation has faced hardship and, with God’s help, every generation has met the challenges and marched proudly forward. Ours is a blessed age, blessed with unprecedented prosperity and security. Ours is a fortunate generation that is in the position to ensure the welfare of our children and grandchildren. As our challenges are unique, so too are our opportunities. Add your family’s name to the list of those who are builders of our future!

May we be reminded of the happiness and blessings we can bring to others through acts large and small.

B’vrakhah,

Rabbi Richard S. Rheins

Yiddish Word of the Month: Freylekh

It is a mitzvah to be cheerful and rejoice on Purim in celebration of freedom and family. Freylekh is the Yiddish word for being cheerful and joyous. Just saying freylekh brings a smile to one’s face and brings cheer to all you meet—it’s the freylekh of freedom!

Ask Rabbi RheinsQuestion of the Month

What is the significance of Purim? On Purim we recall how the Jewish community

of ancient Persia was saved by Esther and Mordechai. Esther was the unlikeliest of heroines. Her parents died when she was a child and her cousin (Mordechai) raised her. It was not easy being a Jew in Persia’s capital of Shushan. Mordechai advised Esther to conceal the fact that she was a Jew. Esther miraculously was selected to be Persia’s new queen. Even so, she shuddered in fear of the maniacal Haman as he plotted to destroy the Jewish people. Who would have thought that Esther would save the Jewish community from Haman? But save us she did! Imagine the terrible disaster that would have happened if not for her. Like Esther, every single member of the Jewish community can make a difference!

What are some ways to observe Purim? In Megillat Esther 9:22, we are told: “Make days

of feasting and gladness and of sending gifts to one another.” This verse forms the basis of the mitzvot of Purim.• Mishloach manot means: “sending gifts of

food.” It is a mitzvah to send at least two different items, one baked and the other fruit, to family and friends.

• Matanot l’eyv-yo-nim means: “giving gifts of food to the poor.” It is a mitzvah to give tzedakah on Purim and thereby share our joy and lift the spirits of those less fortunate.

• It is a mitzvah to attend a Purim service, hear a public reading of the Megillah of Esther, give thanks for our miraculous rescue and rejoice with the Jewish community.

• Make your own gragger! The special noisemaker we use to stamp out the mention of evil Haman’s name is called a “gragger” in Yiddish or “ra-a-shan” in Hebrew.

No Passover Seder to Attend? Call Us!If You Have Room For Others—Call Us!

The first night Passover Seder is Monday evening, April 14. If you can welcome a few others to your seder, please call Temple Sinai Program Director Lisa Thorner (303-759-1827).

In the past, several wonderful families have hosted other Temple Sinai members, out-of-town students and other guests to their homes for Passover. You’ll be fulfilling a blessed mitzvah and making some very grateful people very happy.

Our Temple Sinai Passover Seder will be on Tuesday, April 15 at 6:00 p.m. Call now for reservations! Our Sinai community seder is a joyous, friendly, and meaningful experience. Through the generous gift from a Sinai family, the seder is heavily subsidized to keep the costs at a minimum: $45 for adults and $35 for children.

Requests for cost reductions will be handled confidentially and respectfully.

Sign Up for Adult B’nei Mitzvah Classes

Almost every year, a group of Temple Sinai adult members leads a Shabbat service as B’nei Mitzvah. Without fail, each experiences a profound sense of joy and pride. Likewise, all who attend these services are deeply moved and inspired. Some even step forward and inquire about the next opportunity! We would love to have another wonderful group of Temple Sinai Adults for a B’nei Mitzvah class in the year 2014. Those who never had the opportunity to lead a service as a Bar or Bat Mitzvah and those who would like to relive the thrill are invited to sign up. The classes will begin later this spring and the service celebrating our Adult B’nei Mitzvah will be scheduled sometime in the Fall of 2014.

If you are interested in being a part of the 2014 Temple Sinai Adult B’nei Mitzvah class, call our Program Director, Lisa Thorner (303-759-1827).

Special Musical ShabbatFriday, March 21 at 7 p.m.

From Rabbi Gorban

Every day, it seems, Israel is in the news (or, at least, on my Facebook news feed). I write this

just weeks after the American Studies Association voted to boycott Israeli universities and just after actress Scarlett Johansson received a great deal of criticism and ire for choosing to support the Israeli company SodaStream, which has its factory in a West Bank settlement. In recent years, the Boycotts, Divestments, Sanctions (BDS) movement has gained traction and popular support, mostly through overstated, misinformed and/or one-sided claims about what’s happening in Israel and in the Palestinian Authority. They use these claims (and threats) to pressure politicians, financial institutions, actors and musicians to boycott and divest from Israel.

Which isn’t to say that there isn’t truth in what the BDS movement says. Some of their claims have a basis in truth. Israel is not perfect and her officials sometimes make policy decisions that have terrible consequences. Occasionally, those consequences are intentional and sometimes they should have known better, but sometimes good intentions go awry. Also, Israelis themselves are not perfect and some of them do terrible things when the opportunity arises. And, often—too often—Israel is forced to make a bad choice among worse options, knowing that there’s no other viable way.

When the Jewish community tries to gloss over this difficult situation in the public sphere, preferring not to air our communal dirty laundry, we make space for Israel’s detractors to spin the reality to make their point. If those of us who love Israel, in spite of her flaws, pretend that those flaws are less significant than they are, we can’t be part of a real conversation about how to help her fix those flaws. Better that we show our love for Israel by understanding her challenges and offering realistic solutions than by pretending that everything is just fine.

iEngage with Israel

iEngage: Engaging Israel as Young AdultsThursdays, March 6 - April 10, 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Temple Emanuel

Join other young adults in learning about and discussing some of the many challenges and values conflicts that Israel must confront in order to truly be a light unto the nations. Thanks to generous donors, the cost for the series is only $36/person, which includes dinner, a source book and access to online videos and articles. To register or for more information, contact Betsy Epel at [email protected] or 720-941-2655. This event has been co-sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Rabbincal Council, Jewish Colorado and CAJE.

This past fall I co-taught a community-wide course that does just that. The iEngage curriculum, put out by the Hartman Institute in Israel, digs deep into the challenges that Israel has, especially the values conflicts that lead to Israel having to choose the best of the worst options. It also provides a basis for understanding and discussing the conflicts that appear all-too-often on the news without idealizing any one of the many sides. If you are 21-45 years old, classes begin on March 6 (see below for more information). I hope that you’ll join us in deep conversations about Israel.

May peace come to the land and its inhabitants.

From the President

Susan Epstein President

Visit our website at

You will be amazed at all of the helpful,

up-to-date information.

March ushers in the Jewish holiday of Purim, one of the most joyous holidays on our

calendar. It marks the survival of the Jews from a plot of extinction by Persian King Ahashverosh and Haman in 4th century BCE. Temple Sinai celebrates Purim with a special service, Megillah reading, Purim Shpiel, costumes and a great Purim Carnival. Please come and share in the joy.

There is a second theme to Purim, discussed by today’s women religious scholars, one of social justice and equality of women in religious and secular life. I remember years ago, my daughter Samara came home from Religious School and announced that for the Purim parade she intended to be Vashti, the dethroned Queen of Persia, who until recently was characterized as a troublemaker because she refused to follow King Ahashverosh’s orders. Oy Vey, I am thinking, why didn’t she select the beautiful and beloved Queen Esther who saved the Jews from massacre?

In the modern interpretation of Vashti’s character, Vashti stood her ground, refused the king’s orders to

entertain drunken men and then provided a venue for women to celebrate together and, therefore, may have been one of the first Jewish feminists. I thought of my daughter, smiled to myself and realized the wisdom of our young children.

Fast forward to today, when Israeli women continue to fight for equality, where progress is slow and extremely frustrating. Anat Hoffman Israeli leader of the Israel Religious Action Center and head of “Women of the Wall,” groups on the forefront of pressing for equal rights for women, visited Denver recently. At a joint service of Temple Sinai and Temple Emanuel in February, Anat Hoffman discussed the struggles for equality of Israeli women, including the right to pray out loud at the Kotel. At this service, Anat Hoffman was awarded the prestigious Temple Sinai/Temple Emanuel Isaac Mayer Wise Award for her outstanding contributions in fighting for Israeli women’s rights.

Anat Hoffman reminded us that American Jews have an important role to play in the fight for women’s equality in our homeland. See Women of the Wall’s website www.womenofthewall.org.il for more information. Let me close by suggesting you can become a part of empowering Israeli women to dream bigger dreams and lead a better life.

Youth Culture…What’s In A Name?It seems like yesterday, but it wasn’t…in the mid-

90’s, I sat in a room with Rabbi Stephen Kahn and Tami Miller while they read their vision for the future of youth programming at Temple Sinai. We had less than 10-15 kids involved in TSYG at that time. When they described their plan, they described the establishment of a “Youth Culture” and it included goals that would define the future of youth programming for Temple Sinai. No one could imagine a full-time Youth Director or having kids involved in every aspect of Temple life. There were the “nay sayers” or the people who didn’t think the investment in the program would amount to anything, but it did!

Youth Culture…it’s everywhere. You can feel it when you walk through the doors of the Temple.

This year in particular has been extraordinary. I love watching the children who have passed through our Preschool, begin Religious School, go through Consecration and then start their youth group experience at the tender age of 5. They run through the halls as if they own the place because after all, their Jewish journey began at Temple when they were babies.

There is program after program for literally every age. In December, 15 previous youth group members and now college students joined together during winter break for our annual College Luncheon. They laughed, shared stories and enjoyed being together.

The Shabbat Shirah weekend was inspiring as members of our Youth and Teen Choirs along with several outstanding young cast members

performed both at Shabbat services and during the Identity: The Musical show. Hundreds of people attended both and were captivated by their passion and talents.

Many of us observed in awe, as the members of TSYG led services during their recent Chavurah. It was incorporated into a spectacular weekend filled with programs and activities for over 230 teens from the NFTY-Missouri Valley who came to Sinai to participate in the Winter Chavurah. Carly Coons, Emily Kohn, Shelby Ginsburg and members of the TSYG Board, Youth Committee and parents, did a superb job. Our Temple was filled with laughter and ruach.

During Purim many of our volunteers for the Carnival are youth members, Confirmands and others who are there to work and make the event memorable for the younger children. A sort of “paying it forward” attitude, so to speak.

We have over 350 kids and teens involved in youth programming in a given year. Get your kids involved by calling our fabulous Yourth Director, Carly Coons or email [email protected]. Don’t let them miss out on what could be the best experience of their lives thus far. A time that will live in their hearts, minds and souls for years to come.

It’s everywhere. It’s catching. It’s fantastic. It’s more than just a Youth Culture…the truth is… OUR YOUTH ENRICH OUR CULTURE.

L’shalom,Amy

Did you know that Kabbalah has long suggested that the Torah revealed at Sinai is not the only Torah for the Jewish people? We will look at the content of this new Torah to be revealed in the Messianic Age and see corollaries in developments within Reform Judaism. Be prepared for some radical ideas.

Dr. David Sanders is Director of Kabbalah Experience and a clinical psychologist. He is a sought-after teacher on Judaism and Spirituality and a popular speaker for our Adult Education series.

Wednesday, March 19 Orchestra of Exiles The Story of the Birth of the Israel Philharmonic Special Screening - 7:00 p.m. Elvis Cinemas - Tiffany Plaza

Rescheduled from first semester. If you missed this fascinating film at the Denver or Boulder Film Festival, this is your chance to see it.

In the early 1930s, Adolf Hitler began firing Jewish musicians across Europe. Overcoming extraordinary obstacles, violinist Bronislaw Huberman moved these great musicians to Palestine and formed a symphony that would become the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. With an entourage of allies including Arturo Toscanini and Albert Einstein, Huberman saved nearly 1,000 Jews and guaranteed the survival of Europe’s musical heritage.

Including commentary by musical greats interwoven with an array of interesting film footage, Orchestra of Exiles is a timeless tale of a brilliant young man coming of age and a suspenseful story of how his efforts impacted history.

The film is free and open to the public and will be limited to the first 250 people. Reservations are required by March 15. You must make a reservation again. Please contact Lisa Thorner, Program Director at [email protected] or 303-759-1827.

Create Custom Judaicafrom the Gary Rosenthal CollectionSunday, March 23 and Monday, March 24

On Sunday, March 23 from Noon to 3:00 p.m. and Monday, March 24 from 4:30-8:00 p.m., Temple Sinai invites you to create your own mosaic masterpiece using Gary Rosenthal’s brilliantly-colored glass pieces. This time around there will be several Passover items along with many other amazing pieces. Your mosaic will be sent to Gary’s studio where it will be fired and returned to you in time for Passover.

Gary has been sculpting in welded metals for over 30 years. He creates one of the most popular and unique lines of Judaic art in the country by combining copper, brass and steel with brilliant fused glass.

Bring your friends! All are welcome! Reservations must be made in advance. Please contact Lisa Thorner at [email protected] or 303-759-1827 for more information.

4th Grade Parent-Student Program, Sunday, March 2, 10:30 a.m.-Noon. Please join your 4th grade children for our Parent-Student program. This is a wonderful way to demonstrate your family’s commitment to Jewish education and, more importantly, to spend some quality time “doing Jewish” with them. If parents cannot attend, please invite another special adult to accompany them to the program. Grandparents love these programs!

B’nei Mitzvah

B’nei Mitzvah 2014, 2015 & 2016Dates Selection Forms NOW AVAILABLE.

It is never too late to have our children experience the life-affirming joy and pride of accomplishment by leading a service as a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Each year, between 50 and 60 students become B’nei Mitzvah at Temple Sinai. Our clergy work personally with each student and his/her family to help create a memorable celebration that will bring a lifetime of blessings.

If you have a child who will turn 13 (or older) in 2014, 2015 or 2016 and you do not yet have a reserved date for a service, please call Chazzan Bryan Zive. We’ll answer all your questions and help you find a date that works for your family.

There is something for everyone at Temple Sinai. Make your membership meaningful!

Did you know that, over the course of a year, Temple Sinai sponsors hundreds of events and programs in our community? From Friday night services to museum trips, blood drives to concerts, Habitat for Humanity builds, healing services, classes and lectures — we offer something for everyone.

We are currently adding and updating information on all of the wonderful programs and opportunities on our website in order to provide you with more information on how you can connect and get involved. This month, we have added stories on the birthday parties we host at The Brandon Center, the community

work we do in supporting the Jewish War Veterans and the heymische work it takes to put on the Oneg Shabbat each week after Friday night services. To read these and more, please go to our website, click on Connect or Volunteer at the top of the page and visit whichever stories you want to read.

There is something at Temple Sinai for YOU! We want to help you make your membership as meaningful as possible. For more information, please contact Jeff Robbins at [email protected] or let us know what your interests are at www.sinaidenver.org/m-m-m/.
