1 AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL AVIATION MUSEUM A hive of activity With a collection of nearly 50 aircraft, the Australian National Aviation Museum is one of the largest aviation museums in Australia. The museum contains one of the largest and most intriguing collections of RAN memorabilia. It focuses on HMAS Cerberus’ history of naval training and the growth and evolution of the Colonial and Victorian Navies. Cook Road, Crib Point. Open Mon-Fri 9.30-2. 4 FORT NEPEAN Firing the first shot of WWI Fort Nepean at Port Phillip Heads protected the narrow entrance to the bay from 1870, and became known as Victoria’s Gibraltar. The fort has other attractions relating to its defence function: Fort Pearce Barracks (1910) and an elevated area that contained a disappearing gun called Eagles Nest (1889). Military history, coupled with spectacular scenery, makes this a notable location. Point Nepean National Park. Open 10-5. In the modern era, familiar with sophisticated military operations where drones make air strikes on far-distant targets, the fortifications around Port Phillip Bay appear quaint, part of a simpler bygone era. However, when they were constructed in the late 19th and early 20th Century, they were ‘state of the art’ and our only defence against threats from the sea. Moving around Port Phillip Bay, you will visit Fort Nepean; a special place both for its military history and spectacular scenery. The first shot fired for both World Wars came from Fort Nepean. Queenscliff Fort, with its superbly restored buildings, tours and activities, provides the counterpoint to Fort Nepean. Between them, they defended the entry to the bay. When constructed, Britain was at war with Russia in the Crimea and the Russians were thought to pose a threat. Later, wars such as the Boer War and WWI accentuated the need for coastal protection. Your travels will take you to a moving cairn at Queenscliff, the ‘ships’ graveyard’, HMAS Cerberus, the premier naval training base, HMAS Castlemaine at Williamstown and other maritime museums. 5 FORT QUEENSCLIFF Protecting MelbourneFrom 1870, Fort Queenscliff emerged as the headquarters of a chain of forts around Port Phillip Heads. It was operated continuously until after WWII. A museum opened in 1982, which displays a diverse range of artefacts. Activities include tours to the magazines buried under the cliffs at

Shortland Bluff and the Black Lighthouse. You can even dress up in military uniforms! Gellibrand Street, Queenscliff. Guided tours Sat-Sun 1pm, 3pm.

6 PORT PHILLIP DEFENCES: HMAS GOORANGAI MEMORIAL CAIRN First naval loss

HMAS Goorangai, a 223-ton auxiliary minesweeper sailing under brown-out conditions, collided with the 10,000-ton troopship Duntroon on 20 November 1940. Goorangai was cut in two and sank in a minute. All 24 personnel died. A memorial service is conducted at the cairn each year. The

Queenscliff Maritime Museum has displays relating to the sinking.Hesse Street, Queenscliff. Museum open Mon-Fri 10:30-4:30, weekends 1:30-4:30.

7 SHIPS’ GRAVEYARD No recycling in this ‘ship tip’Between 1913 and 1993, 46 obsolete vessels were scuttled in the Ship’s Graveyard. They range from sailboats and paddle steamers to steamships, dredges, tugs and a naval patrol boat. Long-serving sister naval vessels, the Batman and Fawkner, added to the Victorian Colonial Navy

in 1883, are among the buried ships. Rip View Lookout car park. Walk on the pier for a coastal view.

8 JOHNSTONE PARK PEACE MEMORIAL A grand visionWWI was the ‘war to end all wars’, and memorials reflect the desire to commemorate and celebrate peace. The Peace Memorial Foyer opened in 1926, funded by the community. The names of the 3,500 who enlisted from the district are inscribed in panels on the wall.

9 MARITIME MUSEUM Incarnations of Osborne HouseBuilt in 1858 as a domestic residence, Osborne House has seen many changes. Naval college, military hospital, submarine service base, army training centre and now Geelong Maritime Museum: Osborne House has many stories to tell. The museum contains a treasure trove of

photographs, ship models flags, uniforms and shipwreck items.Swinburn Street, Geelong. Open Sun-Fri 10-3.30.

10 B-24 LIBERATOR RESTORATION ‘Boy’s toys’!Restoration of a B-24 MR Liberator bomber is occurring in a WWII hanger on the old Werribee airfield. Liberators, the ultimate strength of the RAAF, helped deter an invasion force of 50,000 Japanese troops massed in Timor. 33 Liberators, more than 10% of the fleet, were lost in the

South- West Pacific during the war. The public can see the restoration work in progress. Geelong Road, Werribee. Open Tues, Thurs, Sun 9:30-3:30.

11 RAAF MUSEUM Spiritual homeland of the RAAFOperations at Point Cook RAAF base commenced in 1914, providing initial flight training until 1992. Chosen for its suitability for both land and seaplane operations, it expanded rapidly during WWII. The museum collection documents all aspects of RAAF history. Popular Interactive

12 WILLIAMSTOWN FORESHORE A floating museumHMAS Castlemaine, a Bathurst-class minesweeper built at Williamstown and launched in 1941, is now a nautical museum at Gem Pier. The vessel is the last of the 56 who served with the Royal Australian Navy remaining afloat. Visitors can see how crews lived in wartime. On

the foreshore is the anchor of HMVS Nelson, the first flagship of the Victorian Colonial Navy. Commonwealth Reserve, Williamstown. Open weekends & public holidays.
