Chairman’s ReportI am very pleased to present my report for season 2017/2018. Three of our junior teams did a great job in making the finals with the U/16 Reds winning the premiership again.

The other outstanding effort was by the Women’s Team which after their introductory season in 2016/2017 made massive strides this year with 9 wins from 12 matches and qualified for the finals. The team performed magnificently under the lead-ership of Kate Weger and the coaching of Graham Sedunary and Gordon Carey. The team recorded its first ever century maker with Nicole Adams making 159 not out and Lucy Bowering taking the first ever hat trick. The Club was also delighted with Nicole winning the medal for the best player in the SACA Women’s B Grade competition. The Club has a strategic plan in place for Women’s Cricket for the long term expansion, improvement and sustainabil-ity of our Women’s teams.

The Club was absolutely delighted when Chadd Sayers was chosen to tour South Africa and be-came the 10th GDCC Player to play Test Cricket for Australia. The Club was also very proud when Alex Carey played for Australia both in the T20s and 50 over one day games against England. Both players represented Australia with great pride and brought great honour to our Club with their selection and performances.

I have left the other individual player acknowledg-ments to the Senior Coach and Captains in their re-ports.

I would like to thank our Coaching Staff for profes-sionally preparing the players. To Grant Francis our Club Coaching Co-ordinator and assistants Paul Forster, Neil Rowe, Johan Botha, Ben Higgins, Adam Rice, Matthew Heffernan, Casey Tanner, Gordon Carey, Graham Sedunary and Peter Gladigau thank you gentlemen. To Peter Muggleton and John Dou-vlos thank you for the way you both mentored and coached the A grade all season. I congratulate all trophy winners for season 2017/2018, the list of whom is published in this re-port.

I acknowledge the excellent efforts of our junior players when playing in higher grades. We continue

to reap the rewards of our efforts with our Chappe-Whitty Academy in Mount Gambier this year. We are encouraging the CW Academy to include more girls than they have in the past. We look forward to the flow of players from our country zone continuing.

To our Board members, scorers, afternoon tea la-dies, kitchen volunteers, team managers, commit-tee people, just all those folks who give this Club so much, I thank you all for everything you do and is very much appreciated.

My grateful thanks to Match Committee Chairman Paul Forster for the massive amount of work he does behind the scenes, thanks Paul. I also acknowledge the efforts of our Junior Coordinator Ben Pike who continues to do a great job in this role. I congratulate the Sponsorship and Fundraising Committee professionally led by Jarret Moyse for their efforts in raising the funds to keep the Club financially sound. Our thanks to David Boschma who did a wonderful job in coordinating the Toyota Cricket Raffle on behalf of the Club which delivered an excellent financial result. Whilst on fundraising matters, many congratulations to Gemma Burdon who did a wonderful job writing grant applications and attracting grant funds to our Club.

I congratulate Paul Forster and John Laing on being elevated to the status of Life Member of the Club so well deserved, well done gentlemen.

As you are aware through the committed efforts of Craig Dand and Jason Gentle and the approval of a Special General Meeting the Club now has a Playing Life Membership category for dedicated long serv-ing players. We look forward to the special presen-tation to these wonderful servants of GDCC.

Thanks to our sponsors who play such a vital part in the wellbeing of the Club. Our Club has been won-derfully supported for many years by some great

people and companies. There is full listing of all our sponsors in the front of this annual report; I urge all GDCC members, players and friends to continue to support those sponsors.

I would like to acknowledge the extraordinary ef-forts for the Club of Maria and Alan Scholz. I know exactly how much they do on an ongoing basis and have done over many years. After nearly 20 years as our Club Secretary Alan has advised that he will relinquish the role at this year’s AGM. Alan has done a magnificent job in this position way over and above the role specifications; thank you Alan for ev-erything you have done over those years and you seriously are the Clubman’s Club man for GDCC.

I also acknowledge the efforts of our Treasurer Cheryl Cook and Chairman Jarret Moyse who have done so much behind the scenes for the Club.

We have a lot to look forward to in 2018/2019 with another revamping of our players and umpires change rooms. This final revamp allows the GDCC premises to be a fully utilised for first class match-es at Gliderol Stadium and the umpires now have their own excellent facilities within our club house.

I pay my sincere thanks to the City of Holdfast Bay for their wonderful support with our facilities es-pecially with the re-vamp of the Player’s change

rooms. Thanks to our Club Patron Mayor Stephen Patterson and Acting Mayor Amanda Wilson, CEO Justin Lynch and Steve Hodge GM City Assets for their outstanding support of our Club. I also would like to thank our oval curator David Wark for his en-thusiasm and thirst to learn, thank you David.

I also acknowledge and thank our Deputy Patron Nick Chigwidden, President of the Glenelg Football Club, for his ongoing support and interest.

We have a very young female and male playing list which is great for our future and we are well man-aged and financially sound but we need to improve year on year. Our players across all the grades have to accept that they need to be better and ask what they can do for our Club. . I can assure you our ef-forts as volunteers and officials will give everything to make the club as successful as possible. My oldest philosophy for the GDCC Family is -

The only thanks all the volunteers and officials

need is success by our teams on the field and that

the players respect the volunteer’s efforts.

Chairman’s ReportThe 2017/18 season from a senior’s point of view is best described as a year of sustainment and work in prog-ress. Although that may not sound like an overly positive outlook to some, successful sporting clubs or busi-nesses are able to adapt to change,

overcome adversity and continue to give them-selves the opportunity to succeed.

The club as a whole should expect to be success-ful in all aspects of the club, so playing finals from a playing perspective and a well-run club off the field should be the norm.

With a new club coach, a number of senior players leaving or unavailable and an emphasis on trying to develop the youth coming through the grades, there was a lot of uncertainty on what to expect at the start of the year. To then observe the results at the end of the year, you would have to say having the three senior first, second and third grade men’s sides and the Women’s second grade team playing finals is a great result, which it is. What we want as a club is consistently playing finals and to continue to provide an environment to give all players the opportunities to develop their game to play at their highest possible level. But high achieving sporting clubs expect success and take opportunities when they are there. We are giving ourselves the chances, so will hopefully learn from these opportunities and experiences to make us better players in the future helping take those chances when they arise.

Congratulations to Grant Francis on a great first year as club coach and to all the efforts of the rest of the coaching staff who have done a great job. Special congratulations to Graham Sedunary and the 2nd Grade women’s team as the improvement shown in that group has been phenomenal. Hope-fully this sets us up for future success and one day having a First Grade women’s team.

Congratulations to the U/16 Reds winning back-to-back flags so we hope to see many of those young lads prosper in senior grades in years to come.

To have two international representatives this year in Alex Carey (ODI & T20) and Chadd Sayers (Test) was a major highlight for obviously not only those two individuals living out most of our childhood dreams, but for everyone involved in the club. Congratulations on representing yourselves and the club with class over a pretty tumultuous time in Australian Cricket.

Well done to all trophy winners, thanks to the Board of Management for your time and efforts and to those involved in the Sponsorship and Fundraising committee.

As always, we appreciated the efforts from all volunteers this season as you are all so valuable in keeping the club running smoothly.

Thank you

Secretary’s Report

What an unexpected on field performance from our Club in 2017/18! With 7 of our 9 teams making the finals, it truly was an excellent effort from the playing and coaching group. Unfortunately, all but one team went on to the grand final with the U/16 Red

team going on to being premiers for the second year running. With the Club expecting 2017/18 to be a rebuilding season with the emphasis on our youth, the coaching panel and match committee need to be congratulated. They have developed players quicker than expected and having the confidence to place young players in higher grades reaped benefits from their performances.

A highlight of the season though must be the selection of our Captain Chadd Sayers to the Australian Test team and our keeper/batsman Alex Carey to the Australian One Day and T20 teams. We congratulate both on a wonderful personal achievement and the accolades it brings to our Club.

Grant Francis in his first year as Club coaching director has had a great induction to senior coaching and results reflect his (and the match committee) desire to promote our youth, rather than recruit from outside the Club. Grant has had great support from match committee chairman Paul Forster and Grant’s coaching staff of (1st Grade) Peter Muggleton, John Douvlos, (2nd Grade and batting) Ben Higgins, (bowling) Peter Gladigau, Neil Rowe and Adam Rice (development). Graham Sedunary’s role as women’s coach has been excellent in developing our young women into competent cricketers, so much so, that they played in finals for the first time this season.

The City of Holdfast Bay Council in continuing the developing of our ground and facilities, once again supported the Club. The facilities are considered to be the best in suburban cricket by visiting first class teams and coaches. With the help of the Council we have now added a toilet and shower to the umpires room, which now brings them in to line with standards required for first class cricket. No longer will umpires need to walk through the visiting change rooms to access the ground, as they now have their own entry door. Finally we have seen the redevelopment of the old Sparks Grandstand completed and is now a great viewing area for both cricket and football. Although

it will disappear along with the cricket club building under the Council’s Master Plan, I suspect we will see and use it for many years yet.

Another change this season was the appointment of Peter Gladigau as Cricket Operations Manager. This voluntary appointment has taken a great deal of work off me as both Secretary and COM in the past. Peter’s efforts in ground allocations and collaboration with David Wark, the Council’s oval curator, has been excellent. Speaking of David, he continues to produce excellent pitches and outfield for us, and with the help of SACA’s Trent Kelly a surface fit for first class cricket. Western Australia’s coach (now Australian coach) Justin Langer commented to me that the oval and pitch was the best outside major grounds like the MCG, SCG and the WACA, a great endorsement for our curator and Club.

I have already mentioned Graham Sedunary’s work with the women’s team and girl’s academy, along with Gordon Carey, but it is worth reiterating the outstanding work Graham has done this season. Not only did the women’s 2nd Grade play in the finals but Nicole (Nugget) Adams won SACA’s Lyn Fullston medal for the Best and Fairest in that competition – congratulations Nugget! Graham has some great ideas to increase female participation at our club through the girls’ academy, school coaching clinics, and another 2nd Grade team for 2018/19. This will be with a view to entering a 1st Grade team the following season with SACA’s agreement. This would be a major step in our Club being the place for women to play cricket at all levels in the future.

Our Junior Coordinator Ben Pike and his committee have done a wonderful job again in running junior cricket at our Club. Feedback from parents indicates they are very happy with the professionalism of the Club, the integration of seniors and juniors at match awards, and the facilities offered. Ben is to be congratulated for his tireless work, his strong direction with processes and reports to the Club’s Board. He and the coach James Greenwell were rewarded with an U/16 Red premiership plus other grades making the finals.

Volunteers are a major part of any sporting club, and ours is no different. Former 1st Grade player Mark (Slim) Gladigau has been our Equipment Coordinator for some seasons and has now decided to retire from this position due to work commitments. I thank Slim for his voluntary involvement in the Club, and seek a replacement for next season. Please put your hand up if you, or someone you know, would be interested.

Getting players on to the ground for matches requires many volunteers working in the background, so we are always looking for help as team managers, scoreboard attendants, building maintenance skills, afternoon teas etc.. This is always an ongoing challenge to maintain our Club as one of the leaders in Premier Cricket. so please keep eyes and ears open for potential volunteers for our Club. Thankyou to all our 2107/18 volunteers and hope you continue next season.

On the 30th April 2018, the Club held a Special Gen-eral Meeting to add a playing category to the life membership honour roll. This was passed unan-imously and now we have players eligible for life membership if they played 100 1st Grade games or 200 in total in any grade. At last count we now have some 42 players eligible for life membership. Sad-ly 14 are deceased. A new honour board is being made and players will be presented with life mem-bership certificates at a ceremony and date to be decided.

I thank Bob, Cheryl and Jarret for their support at Ex-ecutive level, and to the Club’s Board for the support they have given me over the years, especially Brian McFadyen for doing the meeting minutes. Again I thank the many volunteers who work tirelessly for our Club and players to perform, plus the coaching staff who gave us such a great overall Club result

this season.

All good things must come to an end, and after 11 years (and 2 previously) in the Secretary’s position I have decided to join the “muppets on the hill” and retire. It has been thoroughly enjoyable (well most of the time) and I have overseen the changes in this Club of our facilities, the introduction of internation-al and national 1st Class cricket, the development of our ground and of course a new lease with the Council culminating on getting back our clubrooms upstairs form the Glenelg Football Club. In my time, we have won a 1st Grade premiership, 3 One Day trophies, our first T20 premiership, and I have seen two of our players achieve selection at Australian level, and numerous players make State selection at various levels. What more could a volunteer ask for!

I will still be around making comments on the “hill”, working the scoreboard with Dave Angove, a bit of maintenance and supporting our players and Club. I have been here since my son was chosen in the Ray Sutton Shield team in 1986, and hopefully will be for some years to come.Go the Seahorses!!

Club Coach’s Report

First of all I would like to thank the Board and match committee for allowing me to take on a role within the senior coaching structure. I feel very fortunate to have been afforded this opportunity to continue the tradition of the club and

plan for the future.

I believe as a coaching and playing group we achieved the team goals that are part of the vision and mission statement as set by the club.In my opinion, we easily have the best senior coaching structure in Premier Cricket. To Peter Muggleton, John Douvlos, Ben Higgins, Adam Rice, Peter Gladigau, Neil Rowe, Casey Tanner, Matt Heffernan, Johan Botha and Graeme Sedunary, thank you for all your hard work and influence on the playing group. The club is privileged to have your experience and skill sets. From a personal point of view the support you gave me made my transition into the role fairly seamless. As a coaching group and club we understand our position within the player pathway framework for the betterment of cricket nationally. I would like to recognise the interactions and relationship we have with staff within the SACA High Performance Unit.

To our sponsors, thank you for investing in the club. I hope you find some reward for being a part of our cricket club. It is getting harder across all sporting codes to bring sponsors on board so your support allows us to continue to grow.

On behalf of the players and coaching group, I would like to acknowledge the dedication that the volunteers, Board and sub committees do to get us on the park each week. To the families and partners who volunteer their Saturdays on match days to ensure the seniors have a good spread for afternoon tea for home games, thank you. However, I feel this is an area we can improve on so it is not left to a few to carry the load and something I will be addressing with the playing group in the 2018/19 season.“Volunteers wear working boots but leave a trail of angel footsteps” ~ Terri Gulliemets

Outside of our amazing club volunteers, I would like to acknowledge Chris Brosnan and Jane Woodlands-Thompson from Westminster School and Deborah Hearl and Peter McCabe from Sacred Heart College for allowing us to use their various facilities during pre-season.

Once again 2017/18 was an almost year for the senior grades. We again showed how competitive we are and gave ourselves every opportunity in the First Grade to grab some silverware by making the semi-finals in all three formats, but were unable to keep the momentum long enough during these games to progress into the Grand Finals.

We blooded three new debutants this season in First Grade. Congratulations to Will Bowering, Will Forster and Matt Walmsley-Pace. All three acquitted themselves well and showed they have bright futures ahead. Marcus Lee and Joel Tilbrook got a taste of 20/20 cricket.

The Second Grade led by James Muir and Craig Dand throughout the season continues to play in the major round and finished 4th at the end of the minor round. Once again we were able to put games into our talented young players which will pay dividends into the future. Although they outplayed Kensington in the semi-final, they unfortunately drew, with the by-laws favouring the higher ranked team.

The Third Grade was captained by Robert Pearl with Tom Worthington stepping in when Pearly was unavailable. We had a particular focus to give some of our young upcoming players the experience to play senior cricket. A fantastic achievement to finish in third position and play semi-finals after finishing 8th in the previous season. Unfortunately in the semi-final they encountered a very experienced Kensington player who took the game away, however we gave them some nervous moments before they finally won.

As with most seasons the Fourth Grade have a fluid playing group due to the impact of selections in higher grades, unavailability and injuries. Tom Worthington and Scott Applegarth captained this season, finishing 7th after the minor round using 26 players. This was an improvement on the previous year where we finished 9th. When we had a settled line up we showed we we are more than competitive with the top teams. I would like to acknowledge the players that filled in during the course of the season, especially the under 16 players who came up. James Greenwell, thank you for your support when I needed to bring some juniors up.

We finished 6th overall in the Club Championships which was the same as the previous season, however we improved by 80 points.

Well done to Ben Pike, James Greenwell, Ben Arthur and Tim Dyer with your work in the junior program. Your guidance and experience which flows onto the young players is highly regarded and congratulations on winning the Under 16 Red premiership (back to back) and also for the teams who played finals. We are very fortunate to have the calibre of people leading the juniors, especially on match days. I look forward to working with the junior players who are coming into the senior ranks next season and the competition for selection this will create.

Although still in its infancy the Women’s program continues to go from strength to strength under the hard work and dedication of Coach Graham Sedunary and Captain Kate Weger in her leadership role. The improvement you showed from the previous season demonstrates how far you have come along. An increase in training attendance will not only improve your game but that of your team mates. To the players, thank you for buying into what our club and program is all about. You are the ones who put your heart and soul each and every week into representing the club to be competitive and successful. I am also really proud of the whole playing group for the support you showed each other, not just at trainings or supporting the 20/20 sides but also for getting back to the club for presentation nights.

Chadd, Jake, Ben, James, Craig, Robert, Tom and Scott well done on the way you conducted yourself and guided the sides in your leadership roles. Your input and sometimes own playing sacrifice in making the teams better is highly valued and respected within the club.

To Chadd Sayers and Alex Carey congratulations on your Australian selection, you have lived every boys childhood dream, who picks up a bat in the back-yard and dreams of representing Australia.

While we are all after the ultimate team success we need to acknowledge those individuals who have had outstanding performances and consistent sea-sons. Congratulations to all the trophy winners and those players both senior and junior selected in the various state and national high performance pro-grams.

We use that word competitive; and we were, how-ever we need to find a way within the spirit of crick-et to turn it into RUTHLESS, I feel this will allow us to take those next steps in the success ladder. My simple message to the players is to drive your own careers. Don’t sit back and wait. There’s trying hard, and there’s really trying hard.

I would also like to say thank you to the players and coaches, wives, partners and family for the support you give them. Cricket is a time consuming sport and takes us away for long periods and you do make sacrifices to allow us to do it.To my wife Lianne, Elissa and Harrison, thanks for your ongoing support and sacrifices. Without you behind me I would not be able to be in the position I am. Putting up with my cricket talk and my time away at home is not underestimated, so thank you for everything you do to keep things ticking along the home front.

1st Grade Player’s ReportOn the back on a largely positive yet ultimately unre-

warding 2016-17 season, the expecta-tions were high for the 1st grade lead-ing into the 2017-18 season. Whilst most of the batting line-up remained the same, our bowling stocks took a significant hit with leading wicket

taker Akash Patel and medium-pace all-round-er Shaun Rice retiring for personal reasons, whilst big quick Jack Pudney succumbed to an eventually season-ending elbow injury in the pre-season. With omissions come opportunity, and young quicks Daniel Clarke and Nick Fox along with Max Tonkin were asked to shoulder the load to fill these voids.

A disappointing 14 run defeat to Prospect in Round 1 was an early wake-up call for the 1st grade, and we responded in fine fashion with a resounding 111 run victory against Adelaide in Round 2, on the back on a dominating batting performance from Jake Winter (75), Tom Plant (87) and Johan Botha (70). Rounds 3-5 saw us lose comprehensively to East Torrens, Kensington and eventual runners-up Sturt, leaving us with a miserly 1-4 record after 5 games. With finals seemingly out of the question at this stage, an emphatic 10 wicket outright victory against Port Adelaide thanks to Daniel Clarke’s 8 wickets and Max Tonkin’s 7 wickets sparked a re-vival in our campaign. We went on to beat Wood-ville, Adelaide University and Northern Districts in succession before our bye to be sitting just outside the top 4 with 3 rounds to go. A comprehensive defeat to the hands of eventual premiers Tea Tree Gully was negated by victories against Southern Districts and West Torrens, as we managed to pull off an outstanding effort by making the top 4 for the second straight season.

To make the finals was something to be proud of, but by winning 6 of our last 7 games to make it, we were the form team of the competition leading into our semi-final against Tea Tree Gully. As was the theme for most of our year, our batting was un-derwhelming as we posted 178 in our first innings. In what may have looked all but over as they were 1/60, an inspired spell of fast bowling from Nick Fox (5/68) gave us a significant opportunity to progress through to the Grand Final when they were reeling at 8/129. Unfortunately, this was where the good news ended as their overseas professional got them home with 2 wickets to spare. A devastating end to what was another frustratingly close season in the 2 day competition.

Turning our attention to the one day competition and, as we have in previous seasons, we performed strongly in the minor rounds with wins over Adelaide, Southern District and West Torrens to finish 3rd. A dominant batting performance by Jake Winter (90) and Tom Plant (70*) led us to a 9 wicket quarter fi-nal win over Prospect, whilst a disappointing bowl-ing performance against Adelaide University meant that we bowed out at the semi-final stage of the one day competition. The Twenty20 competition was unfortunately a similar script, with minor rounds wins over the SACA U/19’s, Southern District and Adelaide leading to an eventual semi-final defeat to the hands of eventual T20 premiers Tea Tree Gully.

To make the semi-finals in all competitions is an ex-tremely proud yet ultimately unsatisfying campaign for the 1st grade, and shows that we are around the mark leading into 2018-19. We were able to con-tinue the strong growth of our juniors, with excit-ing 15 year old leg-spinner William Bowering and hard-hitting 17 year old batsmen Josh Hoffmann been granted and succeed with significant opportu-nities this season. Other debutants included Mount Gambier product Matt Walmsley-Pace and 18 year old William Forster, who showed they are more than capable at the 1st grade level. We also saw the club’s leading run-scorer Tom Plant wind the clock back with 729 runs to make the team of the year, along with Nathan Schollar having a superb year in the middle order. Bowling wise, Daniel Clarke and Nick Fox took 30 and 29 wickets respectively to emerge as quality 1st grade bowlers for years to come, whilst from a wicket keeping perspective we had Joshua Roach have an outstanding season to come 2nd in the Charlie Walker medal. Outside of the club but within our playing group, it was extremely exciting to see a former Glenelg U/14 junior in Alex Carey and 1st grade captain Chadd Sayers get their deserved opportunity at the international level and perform admirably. We strive to produce international quality players at our club, and to have two outstanding talents achieve this feat this season is fantastic. Congratulations Alex and Chadd!

On behalf of the 1st grade, I would like to thank Peter Muggleton and John Douvlos for offering their time to coach us once again this season; the effort you put in does not go unnoticed. Club coach Grant Francis was a fantastic help throughout the season, whilst we cannot forget our legendary scorer Gary Kuchta and the work he does in the statistics department. We thank Andrew Dand and

Dave Jenkins for fulfilling team manager duties, as well as Jenny Bullimore and the ladies in the kitchen for providing afternoon tea each and every week. We cannot thank the volunteers around the club enough for allowing us to do the fun part at the club; that is of course to play and win games and ultimately premierships on the cricket field.

Finally, congratulations to the club as a whole for having a successful 2017-18 with 7 of 9 sides making semi-finals, and in particular the U/16 Red’s for winning back-to-back premierships! That is something we should be extremely proud of, and shows we are excelling as a Premier Grade Cricket club. Here’s hoping to a similarly successful 2018-19 season!

2nd Grade Captain’s Report

“The futures a bright one”. The 2017/18 season was tough one, but one I take immense pride in, leading a group of young men who took on the challenge of B grade cricket and didn’t take a backward step.

We started the season with a handful of senior players who hadn’t played a lot of 2nd Grade games and went to Prospect unsure of what the season would hold. We had a great run into Christmas only losing one game, but coming off the break, we really struggled to capture the form and team performances that had lead us to a top four spot.

A trend of being able to bowl teams out cheaply, and give ourselves a relatively low score to chase, followed us throughout the year. Our ability to bowl in partnerships and really squeeze the opposition in the field, allowed us to put a lot of pressure on our opponents and capitalise most weeks. Liam Thompson led the attack beautifully with the new ball taking 24 wickets, and was backed exceptionally all year by Marcus Lee, taking 28 wickets. Notable performances include a wicket with his first ball in 2nd Grade cricket for Will Bowering, who bowled exceptionally well each week before being poached, deservedly, by the 1st Grade. With the bat we struggled all year to find that big score, but had plenty of guys chipping in to keep the scoreboard ticking along. Will Forster did a great job all year opening, scoring 323 runs at 24.8, and

was backed up by Matthew Walmsley-Pace, scoring 318 runs at 53, both of whom deservedly received a 1st Grade cap.

We ultimately fell short in the semi-final against Kensington in a game where home conditions made in very tough for us to take the 10 wickets required. However, the passion and never say die attitude shown by everyone makes me believe that, with another year of experience under our belt, we will be more than capable of competing at the top of the ladder. Hopefully a couple steps better next year.

A big thank you goes out to Ben Higgins for all of his time and effort. Not only for his help at training, and with collecting the kit each week, but for demonstrating calmness and patience in dealing with the team and myself every weekend. Thanks to Grant and the coaches for giving me the opportunity to captain such a great group. Thanks to the committee and the volunteers for the countless hours at training and work behind the scenes that allow us to get onto the oval each week.

An unsung hero of any team who is there every week, rain or shine, is the scorer and once again Bruce Chapman did a fantastic job. To the players who had the undeniable pleasure of copping a couple sprays in the changing rooms, thanks for all your hard work, effort and commitment. You made captaining a challenge each week but one that could only be enjoyed, I hope you have a great winter and I see you all next year.

2nd Grade Women’s ReportGlenelg made the commitment to enter a Women’s team into the SACA 2nd Grade Competition for the first time in 2016/2017. Our first year was one of learning, and finding our way. We were only successful in winning one game, and we had some pretty heavy

losses. From a purely statistical point of view, in 2016/2017, we made 759 runs as a team for the loss of 113 wickets, and conceded 1408 runs, and only took 63 wickets. We were very young, but we felt we had plenty of potential.

To say that we improved our performances this year is a little bit of an understatement. We only lost 4 matches for the season, were second in runs made and wickets taken, and made the finals in the 40 over competition for the first time. Statistically, we made 2094 runs for the season losing 113 wickets, and took 118 wickets while conceding 1408 runs, a 144% improvement in batting, and a 87% improvement in bowling, a staggering result.Importantly, we only lost 5 girls from our first squad, but added many new faces to our squad.

Nicole (Nugget) Adams, joined us, and won all of the batting prizes available in Women’s 2nd Grade Cricket. Overall, 16 girls represent Glenelg for the season, and 9 girls represent Glenelg for the first time.

Our fielding and bowling was of a very high order every week, and we had many contributors during the season. We had 3 girls score over 200 runs, and 4 girls take 15 wickets or more. The girls developed a great team culture, and enjoyed each others company and successes.

Our thanks go to all of the parents and volunteers that helped each week, and to Kai and Ben for their coaching efforts, and to Kate for her excellent leadership throughout the season.

We look forward to the day, when Glenelg will compete in the Women’s 1st Grade competition for the first time.

3rd Grade Captain’s ReportWhen having discussions at the start of the year about our goals and how we were going to approach the 2017/2018 season; backing our strengths/gameplay, displaying consistency and playing finals cricket were a common thread. We implemented these goals

effectively throughout the season, which in turn resulted in us playing finals cricket for the first time in 3-4 seasons.

This season once again we were able to see the bright future this club holds with its young players and will only benefit from experience of playing senior cricket and I cannot wait to see what is in store for them in the nearby future.

Something we have been to wanting to improve in previous seasons was our batting. By having an even number of contributors, batting time, facing our overs and backing each individuals game saw us dramatically develop from previous seasons by being lucky to reach 200, in to making 200 most weeks and producing the most runs in the 3rd Grade competition. Our leading run scorers were our two opening batsmen for a majority of the season which was pleasing with Steven Heatley (384 @ 32) and Sam Williams (291 @ 36). Other contributors all included our top 6 batsmen with myself (250), Mark Healey (174) and Tom Worthington (165), while Oscar Forster and Chris Broad were also amongst the runs, however through standout performances spent most of their time in the 2nd Grade. Other positive signs were evident with youngsters Isaac Higgins batting top 4 (eligible U/16), Zack McCabe (eligible U/16) and Jonah Whitelum batting in the middle order with a positive approach and willing to play their shots.

A constant over the past few seasons has been our bowling. We talked about applying pressure early and being consistent with our lines and lengths, and our two opening bowlers did this and to their efforts ended up being our leading wicket takers with (Lachlan Combes (27 @ 12) and Joel Wilson (18 @ 17). Two other players – one in his first season of senior cricket; Bradley Rayson (16 @ 9) was impressive and showed great development throughout the season with his ball movement and aggression and one an aged veteran; Mark Healey (11 @ 17), showed he hasn’t lost his touch, his consistency with his bowling and was always reliable when called upon. Lastly it’s always handy to have a quality spinner in the team, and although Jonah Whitelum only played 4 games he offered plenty with the ball and will only improve within the coming seasons.

Although our season ended in the first final against Kensington, this season was one of vast improvement. Through performing consistently and individuals developing their own skills, I have real hope in this group that we will go one better next year, as we have the right mix of experience and youth and desire to win!

Finally, I would like to thank Grant Francis for his support as Head Coach in his first year, it was greatly appreciated. Thank you to all of the other coaches, as well as the 3rd Grade playing group for their support throughout the season and as mentioned let’s look to go one better next year!

A big thanks must also go to Ian Milne for being our scorer, you do a sensational job. Here’s to hoping for another enjoyable and suc-cessful 2017/18 as a club!

4th Grade Captain’s ReportThe 2017/18 season was definitely challenging for the young 4th Grade team, but one which we can take many positives from. The team started off well with a promising round 1 win against

Prospect out at Broadview oval. James Mifsud (4/22) and Joel Wilson (3/16) led the way in the bowling attack helping to dismiss Prospect for 123. From a batting perspective it’s never a great start to be in the situation of 3/7, however Lachie Mill (64*) alongside Mark Healey (44) batted exceptionally well together, establishing a 104 run partnership to secure us the win. This was pleasing as it has always been a struggle in previous seasons to develop strong batting partnerships in the 4th Grade.

The next couple of games resulted in losses where we failed to make an impact on the scoreboard especially from a batting point of view. That all changed in Round 4 against Kensington where leading from the front was an incredible innings from Tom Worthington (185). Tom had great support coming from his opening partner Kai Boschma (71). This opening partnership between the two tallied 240. A quick fire (67*) from Bradley Rayson put us in a very strong position with a total of 3/371. Unfortunately, as it goes with cricket, the weather gods were not with us and the game was called off the following week, ending any chance of a victory.

As in most cases player performance demands selection and this situation was no different with multiple team changes for the next game. This of course provides great opportunity for juniors to step up and experience the nature of playing senior cricket. With such a young team, we did struggle in the next couple of games but were able to enjoy an outright victory against Woodville before the mid-season break. A great individual performance from Jonah Whitelum help set the game up with a brilliant spell of bowling, taking 5/10 and then proceeding to open the batting and topscoring with (77). Michael O’Connor chipped in the second innings with a good spell of (4/10).

After the midseason break the team had to deal with the fact of the unwarranted stretch of eight weeks where no game was played. Circumstances surrounding weather, byes and unforeseen events, it was a Frustrating 2nd half of the season, one where the team struggled to play with consistency. The final game of the year I thought was our most comprehensive performance as a team beating West Torrens by 147 runs. We had even contributors with the bat, Benny James (47), James Nicolson (32), Jay Turlan (31). I was very confident we would be able to defend our total of 264 as long as we stuck to our plans and apply pressure in the field. As a bowling unit I don’t think we could have performed much better. Benny James as usual was Mr. reliable bowling from one end giving nothing away while Jay Turlan had a day out taking (6/66). It was very pleasing to finish the season on a high note and should give us momentum to build on for next year.

We had a number of young players who showed great ability during the season and I believe they will be important senior players for our club in years to come. Bradley Rayson, Jonah Whitelum and Cameron Lee are all young players who finished playing in higher grades due to their good performances during the season. I would also expect the likes of Brett Connor, Kai Boschma, Shannon Upton and Mitchell Hann to continue to improve and push their claims to play higher next season.

A big thank you to Peter Hanley (Gof) for scoring during the year, we really do appreciate your help as always, you do great job.

Lastly, I would like to thank Grant Francis and all the coaching staff for their support and efforts throughout the year. I think as a club we are building to something great and hopefully success is not too far away!

Junior Coordinator’s Report

OverviewOff the back of our success in 2016/17 we were quietly confident that our teams should do well again in the 2017/18 season. By the end of it we were thrilled with the result,

which no doubt is the culmination of the previous four or 5 years of hard work from everybody in-volved. Our established players picked up where they left off last season and began the pre-season schedule with the same enthusiasm and fervour. New players to the club and those joining us from the Academy, had no option to rise to the challenge – and did so, quickly. All players and coaches have worked extraordinarily hard throughout the season again and their efforts paid big dividends by the end of March.

As with every year both the under 14 and 16 White teams saw many players move through their ranks as we fed players up through the grades to satisfy selection pressures throughout the club. This not-withstanding, by the end of Round 10 it was clear that all four teams were within striking distance of a Semi-finals berth. With the exception of Sturt, no other Club came close to achieving this feat this season. Both Reds teams were assured a place and both White teams needed to finish with wins and have a few other things go their way to see a berth realised. Both Whites teams won their final round, the U14 White group made it to the Semis and the U16 Whites just missed out. Unfortunate-ly the U14 Reds and Whites lost their respective Semi-finals, the U16 Reds went on to win the Pre-miership against Woodville.

The Ray Sutton Shield and Bank SA U17 Shield sides were unlucky not to secure Grand final berths and the Bank SA U12 Shield side also made a good account of themselves. It is clear that GDCC juniors are in a very good place at present.

In addition to this, the seniors found themselves in a similar situation, with three teams making their respective Semi-finals. We would like to offer our congratulations to Grant Francis in his first year as Coaching Director and the coaching, support staff and volunteers and all of the seniors for their achievements this year. We hope the juniors that we send you will continue to contribute to your success and we look forward to working with you towards a successful future for the whole clubTeam Performances

Junior Academy: Coach - Tim Dyer; Team Manager - Kym Williams The young fellas had a somewhat quiet season as we tried to find the best way to accommodate them in the club structure, in the first season without a formal competition to play in. Tim did an excellent job of bringing the group together. The squad naturally competed in the U12 Shield and despite regular training, finished 7th overall. A very positive result considering they only played a few trial games before hand. But it was clear that as the competition progressed, the boys gelled well and played the 40:40 formats strongly. They finished their season with informal trial games against three other PL Clubs, through which they continued to improve. We were fortunate to have an excellent group of supportive parents and after some reflection and input from them and Tim, plans to improve on this year’s training and playing structure are already in progress.

U/16 Red: Coach - James Greenwell.Back to back Premiers this year, the lads finished the minor rounds 3rd overall with 8 wins 1 draw and 2 losses and three draws. Glenelg went on to win both their Semi-final against Sturt and Grand Final against Woodville (again) in convincing fash-ion with rarely a foot put wrong – which is exactly what happened last season. The boys seem to peak at exactly the right time. Congratulations on the win on the back of all that hard work.

U/16 Whites: Coach - Sean GilbertUnlucky not to make a Semi-finals berth, the U16 Whites had a very successful season finishing equal 4th/5th with Sturt with strong wins in the last two rounds. Finishing with 6 wins, 1 draw and 3 losses. It is with some sadness that we say fare-well (but not goodbye) to Sean after two seasons at the helm. Sean has guided the boys through some very tricky territory at times and the results speak for themselves. Thank you Sean!

U/14 Reds: Coach - Paul Forster Off the back of the U14 Whites premiership win last season, it was always going to be an inter-esting year for most of this team. Having made it to the Semi-final, the boys succumbed to some very good, high pressure cricket to be beaten by Adelaide. However their season was very strong. 9 wins, 1 loss and 1 draw saw the boys finish the season as minor premiers. As some of them move into the U16 ranks, we look forward to watching their progress

U/14 Whites: Coach - Matthew Chapman After retiring as Club Coaching Director, we were thrilled to welcome Chappy into the juniors coaching ranks. Under his careful hand the boys finished the season well. Like the U16 Whites, the U14 Whites saw much movement of players through their ranks which can be unsettling even for experienced sides. In spite of this, the boys finished 3rd overall with 6 wins and four losses. They lost to a very strong Northern Districts in a Semi Final game with its fair share of tension and twists and turns.

Ray Sutton Shield: Coach – Paul Forster; Assistant Coach - Steve HeatleyThe 2017/18 season of RSS saw a team of mixed strengths perform well, missing out on a Grand Final berth by 0.002 of a point in Adelaide’s favour. However we can be justifiably proud of this result also. Our performance in the RSS is seen by the Club as an acid test as to the health of the junior competition. When compared with the other results from the season, we are confident that our boys are performing well and the juniors are thriving.

The U/17 Shield: Coach – Josh Roach; Team Managers - Craig Bowering and Ben HigginsThe under 17 boys this year participated in the first ever Bank SA U17 shield in T20 format. Having cut the tournament from two weeks to one, it was vital the boys hit the ground running, which they did. With solid wins over Southern Districts, Adelaide, West Torrens and Woodville, the only loss came on the last day to Sturt, who were victorious by one wicket. For us to not go through to the final, Adelaide had to win its last game inside 18.4 overs and they did so in 18.3. The format and size of our home ground resulted in lower scores that hurt our percentage. However, it was a great learning experience for the boys. Many had never played T20 before and to beat teams with renowned game winners was terrific. The only loss coming to the eventual winners in the last over. The boys conducted themselves in a magnificent fashion.

Coaching and Support StaffWith the departure of Grant Francis to take on the Seniors role, I hoped that the new coaching structure with two Coaching Co-ordinators in James Greenwell for the U16s and Ben Arthur for the U14s would stand up to scrutiny, they didn’t disappoint. They did an excellent job in transitioning in to the new management structure and it was business as usual. Our core coaching group was James Greenwell and team manager Matt Kerruish (U/16 Red),

Sean Gilbert (U/16 White), Paul Forster (U/14 Red), Paul Forster and Steve Heatley (RSS), Tim Dyer and Shield team manager Kym Williams (Junior Academy, SACA U/12 Shield), Josh Roach and team managers Craig Bowering and Ben Higgins (SACA U/17 Shield). We were unlucky not to have the consistent presence of Graham Sedunary (net sessions and conditioning) and Darren Davis (fielding and conditioning) this season, but when they could help, their input was always valuable. Steven Heatley assisted again with the U/16 and RSS squads and Jamie McPherson assisted the U16s in the nets. Laura Bond stepped up again at the beginning of the season through her fielding session and expertise she shared from her softball experience. Club Physiotherapy sponsor James Pyke contributed at the top of the season with some excellent advice to the boys about body care and strength. I can’t express my thanks to this group enough. As role models of hard work, discipline and care we couldn’t ask for a better coaching group.

We are extremely grateful to all the parents and carers who contributed to scoring, ground set up and breakdown, afternoon teas and fetching and carrying sundry children, forgotten items, supplying first aid and general care and support of our players. Without your involvement and commitment our competition wouldn’t exist, thank you all.

In another productive year I would like thank the Junior Committee. I have continued to enjoy working with this dedicated group of people and thank them for their hard work and commitment to the Club. There will be some changes to the Committee in the coming year and I’ll be keen to work with them all again. The committee consists of:Alan Scholz – Club Honorary SecretaryAmanda Aulert – Scorers Rosters, U14 and U16 repAmy Hill – Media officer, Academy, U14 repBen Arthur – U14 Coaching Co-ordinatorJames Greenwell – U16 Coaching Co0ordinatorLaura Bond – Pre-season training and U16 repMatthew Kerruish – My Cricket Administrator, U16 repSarah Nunn – Finance Officer, U14 and U16 repCam Grant – Academy and U14 repKaren Knox – Child Safety Officer and Academy rep

This year we made a point of wishing well our U/16 players who will move to the seniors’ ranks next season at the end of season presentations. I meant what I said that night in that we hope they have loved playing with the juniors and that they will continue to contribute to our senior ranks and most of all to keep loving playing.

Thank you everyone for the season that was and I look forward to the new season and seeing everyone again.
