Renderings of the North Campus Sanctuary will be unveiled along with project definitions for South Campus and Akita.

Membership SundayMany programs and ministries of First Community Church have already touched the lives of the new members joining today. Eric Davies, Donna Sigl-Davies and daughter, Arcadia, all join with a deep interest and previous involvement in the Spiritual Searcher programs. Kathleen Lennon has been involved in our Mission ministries, including Monday Night Meals and the Garage Sale. Matt Spurrier and Mary Grefka are looking forward to their wedding next month. Graham and Emily Williams appreciate the music of the Chancel Choir and the infant program for their 6-month-old daughter, Claire. And, Matt McCandlish plays an important role with our Worship Technologies and whose testimonial below expresses the importance of this church in times of loss.

First Community Church became a part of my life over 35 years ago while dating my late wife, Julie Gareff McCandlish. Julie was very active at Akita and the youth program in the 60’s and 70’s. We were married at the church in 1979, our three children were baptized here, our two daughters married and our grandson was baptized here. These very special moments in our lives made this church feel like our spiritual home and the openness and diversity in membership and beliefs are the reasons we felt this was our church. I recently took on the role of Producer-Director with Worship Technologies and work with that staff on First Edition and the live webcast of worship each Sunday. With Julie’s recent and sudden death, becoming a member seemed the best way to honor her life because of how important this church was to her.

–– The Reverend Ms. Katherine H. Shaner, Minister of Mission

The Social Gospel

The views expressed in the recommended websites do not necessarily reflect the views of First Community Church.

Many of you have inquired about how best to support the surviving children of the refugee family killed in last week’s horrifying car crash. CRIS, Community Refugee and Immigration Service, is now accepting donations for the Shahad boys.

Our Refugee Task Force has worked with CRIS for many years and supports their ongoing good work in the community. This week, Mission Council made a $1,000 donation, however, much more will be needed.

Please forward this information to anyone who would be interested in helping and please keep the Shahad boys, the Iraqi community, CRIS and the Noor Islamic Center in your daily prayers. May God surround them with peace during this time of such sorrow.

From Hannah, our CRIS representative:

On Friday, October 18, an Iraqi re refugee family experienced an unimaginable tragedy. Eid Shahad, his wife Entisar and their four daughters were killed instantly in a terrible car accident in Upper Arlington.

Surviving are five sons ages 17, 10, 9, 8 and 5, and the boys’ elderly grandmother. CRIS worked with this family when they first arrived in the United States in 2011. They had done so well that they were going to be sponsoring a new Iraqi refugee family arriving in November. It would be heaping tragedy upon tragedy if these five boys are separated.

CRIS is working with the greater Iraqi community and social service agencies to find an appropriate guardian so that the five boys can be kept together. We are asking for help for rent, food and necessities so that the guardian can afford to care for the family. All funds collected by CRIS will be administered by an independent financial advisor to ensure that 100% of your tax deductible donations will go to support these children.

Donations can be made online at crisohio.org or checks can be mailed to:

CRIS 1925 E Dublin-Granville Rd., Suite 102 Columbus, OH 43229 Attn: Shahad Family

May God Bless you and keep you,
