–– The Reverend Ms. Katherine H. Shaner, Minister of Mission

The Social Gospel

The views expressed in the recommended websites do not necessarily reflect the views of First Community Church.

Last Tuesday was Earth Day, a day to honor and remember God’s creation and our role in caring for her and all God’s creatures who call her home. Today I want to share some of my favorite Earth Day finds from social media with you. My prayer is that together as a people, we may understand every day is Earth Day and commit to the responsible use of her resources, the compassionate healing of her wounds and the prayerful stewardship of all her creatures.

A Celtic Prayer for our Earth shared by Diana Butler Bass: http://bit.ly/RIYJhs

Stunning photos of God’s beautiful creation from the Huffington Post: http://huff.to/1k44WNV

Justice and Witness Ministries, the justice and advocacy arm of the United Church of Christ, has an Easter campaign to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Lend your voice for clean air here: http://bit.ly/1k44XS5

From Teaching Tolerance: “Race and Poverty Matter, Even on Earth Day.” This is a must read. http://bit.ly/1kXHFOI

Super beautiful post from blogger Susan Katz-Miller at On Being Both; Interfaith Spirituality: Earth Day. http://bit.ly/1ty4lsZ

Tree Resurrection for Easter!! New York does it again, this story, awesomesauce. http://nyti.ms/Qvmc4P

Million Trees NYC: http://bit.ly/1f0lZBV reminds me of the Greenbelt Movement led by Nobel Prize winner Wangari Maathai. You should know her: http://bit.ly/1oogStD

The Peace Pastor, Mennonite Marty Troyer, wrote from the heart here: Climate Change, Desmond Tutu and Boycotting Houston. Preach on preacher! http://bit.ly/1i6jwFo

Wow, wow, wow. This toolkit beautifully and powerfully presents the link between ecologic justice and reproductive health. Way to go Sierra Club, RHTP, and We Act! http://bit.ly/1lBEVtj

“What if our religion was each other If our practice was our life If prayer, our words What if the temple was the Earth If forests were our church

If holy water--the rivers, lakes, and ocean What if meditation was our relationships If the teacher was life If wisdom was self-knowledge If love was the center of our being.”

— Ganga White (from Mother Earth by Trista Hendren)
