–– The Reverend Ms. Katherine H. Shaner, Minister of Mission

The Social Gospel

The views expressed in the recommended websites do not necessarily reflect the views of First Community Church.

The world traveled this week. They traveled from all over, together, to pay tribute to a man of peace. The world gathered together this week to sing Nelson Mandela to heaven. As I watched people stream into the African rugby stadium, 100,000 strong with the largest gathering of foreign dignitaries we may see in our lifetimes, I could not help but reflect on the parallel of their journey to our Advent journey.

We are in the third week of Advent, symbolized by the lighting of the Shepherd’s candle. This candle symbolizes joy and the

angels announcement of the coming birth of the Prince of Peace. I cannot think of a better time to celebrate our earthly brother, Madiba, who fought so passionately for peace.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu commanded those gathered in South Africa to promise “to follow the example of Nelson Mandela.” As we celebrate the “good tidings of great joy” this Sunday at the coming of the birth of Christ, may we also commit ourselves to being apostles of Christ’s peace and work for reconciliation until we too are sung into heaven.

Kidwell Heads For Deep Griha

By Sandy Wood

Tabitha Kidwell will volunteer at Deep Griha from February - April, 2014. Her experience will be particularly helpful to Deep Griha’s English Medium School, which

First Community Church helped build beginning in 2008.

“I’ve dreamed about volunteering there for years,” Tabitha said. “My hope is that I could be helpful as a resource for the teachers.”

Tabitha is an active church member, daughter of Vickie Murphy and cousin to Jim Long. She spent 2 years teaching English to aspiring English teachers at a Muslim University in Salatiga, Inndonesia, 2 years teaching in Madagascar with the Peace Corps and 1 year teaching in France.

She majored in French and Spanish Education at Miami University and earned an MA in Foreign and Second Language Education while teaching 4 years at Kilbourne Middle School in Worthington.

Tabitha was an adult leader for the FCC High School program for 4 years.

Deep Griha has been supported by FCC for more than 38 years. Founded by Neela and the late Bhaskar Onawale, the organization serves the poor in the slums of Puné, India and is currently directed by Ashlesha Onawale, daughter of Neela and Bhaskar.

Deep Griha employs more than 100, half of whom are past recipients of Deep Griha services. The program reaches 78,000 individuals with a budget under $350,000, about $4.49 per recipient.
