Invitation to Register
The Australian Mine Ventilation Conference 2015 | www.austminevent.com.au2
On behalf of the organising committee, it is with pleasure that I invite you to participate in The Australian Mine Ventilation Conference 2015, jointly hosted by the University of New South Wales Australia (UNSW), The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (the AusIMM) and the Mine
Ventilation Society of Australia.
This conference will be held at the UNSW’s Kensington campus and follows on from the highly successful Mine Ventilation Conferences held in 2011 and 2013.
We are pleased to present over 60 technical presentations from practitioners in both the metalliferous and coal mining sectors together. Keynote speakers whose industry expertise will address the major issues facing mining operations include:
Andrew Clough, General Manager, Peabody Metropolitan Underground Coal Mine, Peabody Australia
Professor Huw Phillips, Professor Emeritus, University of Witwatersrand
Professor Jan du Plessis, Associate Professor, University of Pretoria
A significant feature of this three-day conference will be the presentation of case studies from major events and novel solutions to mine site challenges. Additionally, workshop sessions are scheduled to be held prior to the conference. These workshops provide opportunities for you to raise concerns and help to ensure the industry can maintain its reputation of safety and innovation.
This conference will gather the most recent developments in mine ventilation research, practical solutions to everyday problems challenging mining operations and raise new challenges that will focus research for finding solutions. It provides a mechanism to develop professionally and increase your network that will benefit ventilation practitioners, technical services managers and mine managers.
I look forward to welcoming you to The Australian Mine Ventilation Conference 2015 in Sydney! I am sure you will find it a rewarding and engaging experience.

Andrew Clough
General Manager, Peabody Metropolitan Underground Coal Mine
Ensuring an Effective Principal Hazard Management Plan
Andrew was previously Chief Inspector of Coal Mines for Queensland. His primary role was to
assist the industry to operate safely through compliance with mining safety legislation.
He commenced in the mining industry in the Illawarra area in 1980 as a miner whilst studying a Bachelor of Mining Engineering at Wollongong University. After graduating with a First Class Honours degree, he progressed through a number of operational positions before commencing a Master’s Degree in Mining Geomechanics at the University of New South Wales.
Andrew then worked as a geotechnical consultant before joining the underground metalliferous mining industry. He was an underground manager for the Ashanti Goldfields Operations in West Africa. He has also been the Mine Manager for the Mt Lyell Copper Mine in Tasmania as well as both the Enterprise Deep Copper Mine and the George Fisher Lead Zinc Mine at Mount Isa.
Andrew joined the Mines Inspectorate in 2003 as the District Inspector of Mines, based in Mackay. After a period of approximately two years, Andrew returned to coal mine operations as the Production Manager at the Crinum Mine.
Andrew progressed through the roles of General Manager at the Broadmeadow Mine, Project Manager for the Ellensfield Project, General Manager of the North Goonyella Mine, Chief Inspector of Coal Mines and General Manager Metropolitan Colliery.
Andrew is the holder of a Queensland First Class Mine Managers Certificate for Underground Coal and a Queensland First Class Mine Managers Certificate for Underground Metals.
Professor Jan du Plessis
Associate Professor, Sasol Chair in Mining Engineering Safety, Health and Environment, University of Pretoria
Methods and Strategies Employed to Achieve Energy Efficient Ventilation and Cooling of Mines
Jan du Plessis is the holder of a PhD in mining engineering from the University of Witwatersrand. He joined the mining industry in 1986 where he was employed as a learner official mining. He worked on a number of mining operations, then joined the University of Pretoria as a senior lecturer and later joined the CSIR in a number of research and management positions.
Jan’s last full-time industry position was as the Vice President and Group Head of Energy, Carbon and Water Management in the Gold Fields Group. In December 2013, he joined the University of Pretoria as an Associate Professor as the holder of the Sasol Chair in Mining Engineering Safety, Health and Environment. He also serves as a Non-Executive Director on a number of boards including Fraser Alexander, I-Cat Environmental Solutions and MechCal – a leading energy efficient fan manufacturer where he is also the elected Chairman.
Professor Huw Phillips
Professor Emeritus, University of Witwatersrand
Lessons Learnt from Coal Mine Explosions
Huw Phillips was born in Wales and grew up in one of the coal mining valleys. After graduating in 1968, he joined the National Coal Board and worked in various underground
production posts for the next five years. He then joined the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, as a senior research associate. While there, he obtained the degrees of M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Mining Engineering. In 1977, Huw was appointed to a lectureship in Mining Engineering at UNSW and became a senior lecturer in 1980.
In 1985, Huw was appointed Chamber of Mines Professor of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg and the following year became the Head of the School of Mining Engineering, a position he held for 25 years until 2010. He continues to be the Chamber of Mines Professor of Mining Engineering and, in November 2013, the University conferred on him the title Professor Emeritus.
Professor Phillips has been very involved with industry affairs and has sat on many industry committees and enquiries, including those for five multi-fatality explosions. Huw is the author of some 60 papers dealing with mine mechanisation, ventilation, occupational hygiene and safety problems in mining.

T3: CSA Mine – Cobar Thursday 3 September 2015
CSA Mine is located in Cobar, Central Western NSW. It is operated by Cobar Management Pty Ltd (CMPL) – owned by Glencore.
The mine initially started in 1871 with an erratic production history until 1964, when Broken Hill South Ltd began large scale production. The mine passed to CRA in 1980 and then to Golden Shamrock Mines in 1992. The mine was closed in 1997/8 following its acquisition by Ashanti Goldfields and was reopened in 1999 by Glencore.
Since 1965, the mine has extracted substantial quantities of zinc, lead, silver and copper. Today, CSA Mine focuses on mining copper, with a silver co-product. The underground mine produces over 1.1 million tonnes of copper ore and produces in excess of 185,000 tonnes of copper concentrate per annum. The concentrate contains approximately 29% copper metal and is exported to smelters in India, China and South East Asia.
A ventilation capacity of 500m³/s and 10MW bulk air cooling is currently applied to ventilate the mine. A ventilation upgrade is currently underway to increase the airflow to approximately 1000m³/s with a potential bulk air cooling upgrade to 21MW.
Cost: A$2090 per person.
