The Martins had purchased considerable quantities of Russian bank bonds which were deposited in the local bank. In 1918 the town surrendered to the Bolsheviks who confiscated and subsequently destroyed the bonds. The protest was made via the Vice Consul of the Netherlands who has signed the protest. English typescript. A legally notarized document granting power of attorney to Vasiliy Ivanovich Martin allowing him to sell property belonging to Maria Ivanovna Duvakina in the town of Armavir, 1915. Russian typescript. 137 Woodhouse (Jonas Eastwood) A Manuscript Log Book or Diary, providing an interesting daily account of the voyage of the SS New Great Britain, from London to Southland, New Zealand, 1st May 1863 to 14th August 1863, includes a description of islands which were passed (Canaries, etc), the 'crossing the line' ceremony, problems with vermin, an outbreak of Smallpox on board, the Captain's success at shooting several Albatross, encounters with other ships, etc. There is also a list of young male passengers, with their county or country of origin (the majority from Scotland). The ship arrived in early August but appears to have been held for several weeks offshore in quarantine. A separate 1981 letter states that the ship arrived at Port Chalmers via Bluff on the September 28th, 1863 with 170 passengers for Otago [In 1863, the Otago Gold Rush was at its peak].
