REFLECTIONS FROM THE DIARY OF ST. FAUSTINA

Jesus: “I am saying this that you may constantly unite yourself with Me through love, for this is the goal of the life of your soul. This act is an act of the will. Know that a pure soul is humble. When you lower and empty yourself before My majesty, I then pursue you with My graces and

make use of My omnipotence to exalt you (Diary, 576).

What is a Novena?

A Novena is a traditional Catholic prayer that continues for nine days and is intended to ask for a particular favor or blessing—or to give thanks for blessings received. The nine days recall the nine days that the Apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary spent in prayer between Ascension Thursday and Pentecost Sunday waiting for the fulfillment of the promise. Every year, we pray the Divine Mercy Novena on the nine days between Good Friday and Divine Mercy Sunday and the popular nine first Fridays novena to the Sacred Heart given to us by St. Margaret Mary Alacoque.

While the word novena comes from the Latin novem, meaning "nine," the term has also come to be used generically to refer to any lengthy series of prayers. (Thus, the Saint Andrew Christmas Novena is recited for more than nine days, between the Feast of St. Andrew (November 30) and Christmas.) Usually the series refers to a prayer or devotion offered on nine consecutive days, but the novena could be a series of devotions for nine consecutive weeks, or months, or hours, – Mother Teresa’s so-called ‘emergency novena’ or ‘express novena’ consisted of reciting nine consecutive Memorares!

The heart of any Novena is the same as the first one, called by the Lord Himself. “He commanded them not to depart from Jeru-salem, but to wait for the promise of the Father.” (Acts 1:4) The persistance of Christ’s followers and His Mother to wait for the promise ended in fulfillment – Pentecost - where tongues of fire appeared over each of their heads declaring the coming of the Holy Spirit.

Nine day vigils were noted in Church history from the third century onward. By the Middle Ages, novenas for the Popes and Car-dinals were commonplace. Still today, whenever we undertake a novena of prayer, we are declaring the same supreme desire to wait for the promise, persevering with confidence until the end.

Every novena is a bit different in the intention, formation of prayers and practice. Structures for prayer have value insofar as they support and assist our efforts to pray faithfully – which is simply to say – our efforts to seek the will of God and rely on Him to always provide the loaf we need rather than the stone we sometimes ask for. There is no ‘power’ in formulas or structures as such, and the human tendency to lapse into superstition being what it is, it is well that we remind ourselves of this on a regular basis, as well as clearly instructing our children in this regard.
