With cases of bird fluoutbreak confirmedin nine states so far,

meat start-ups such as Licious,Nandu’s, and FreshToHome aregoing all out to assure cus-tomers on the safety of theirpoultry products.

While Bengaluru-basedomnichannel meat brandNandu’s is seeing some fluctua-tions in daily orders, withdemand for poultry productsgoing down by 5-7 per cent, it isbusiness-as-usual at Licious.FreshToHome co-founder andChief Executive Officer (CEO)Shan Kadavil said it is difficult topredict what is going to happenin future but the company isseeing a traction in marinatedproducts, including poultry.Licious has set up a page onFAQs, which consumers canaccess on the app and the web-site and has given training toconsumer care people to answerall queries regarding bird flu.

All the players have rolledout campaigns to reach out tocustomers about the safety,quality, and hygiene of theirofferings via social media,emails, and messages.

“Sensitivity towards all viraldiseases has gone up becauseof Covid-19. Whether bird flu orno bird flu, we should always beaware about the traceability ofthe food on our plate,” said

Narendra Pasuparthy, founderand CEO, Nandu’s, who claimsto have grown over 60 millionchickens in the past 16 yearswith not a single case of bird flu.“We are not worried about thesediseases as we grow our chickenwith utmost integrity fulfillingover 100,000 orders a month,”he added.

“Every Licious productundergoes more than 150 safetyand quality checks at variousstages of sourcing and process-ing. Our meats have alwaysbeen and continue to be 100 percent safe,” said a Licious spokes-person. Whie organised meatstart-ups claim 100 per centtraceability of their productswith full biosecurity, the unor-ganised meat market has takena beating after the bird flu cases

came to light, with sales goingdown by 20-25 per cent. Of thetotal ~1.7-trillion poultry marketin the country, 10 per cent isorganised that has seen moreacceptability since the Covidoutbreak as they offer conven-ience of shopping online.

While Nandu’s has plans toexpand to three more states ofTamil Nadu, Telangana, andAndhra Pradesh this year,FreshToHome will be soonlaunching in West Bengal.FreshToHome, which last yearin October raised a $121 millionfund, is currently selling 1,000tonnes of chicken and chickenproducts monthly.

Food delivery platforms —Swiggy and Zomato — have alsosent advisories to customersrelated to the bird flu. “Keep

calm and (chicken) curry on,”said Swiggy in the advisory. Itsaid chicken and eggs cookedwell at normal cooking temper-atures (above 70 degree celsius)are perfectly safe from bird flu,according to WHO (World Hea-lth Organization). “So order insome Chicken 65, ChickenBiryani or Tandoori Chicken,without worrying about athing,” said Swiggy advisory. Italso requested the customersnot to waste the food that isalready at home.

Zomato in its advisory alsotold customers that cookedchicken and meat are safe toeat. “The bird flu virus is verysensitive to heat, so anythingcooked beyond 70 degree cel-sius is fully okay,” said theZomato advisory.

An investigation of allegedunlawful practices at CarlsbergIndia found “potential improp-er payments” to governmentofficials and other regulatorylapses, its former auditor saidin a document seen by Reuters.

Reports by a different globalconsultancy, also seen by Reu-ters and previously unreported,disclosed other lapses at Carls-berg India in 2018, includingchild labour.

The findings cast a freshshadow on operations and com-pliance practices at the Indianjoint venture of Danish brewerCarlsberg A/S, which accordingto IWSR Drinks Market Analysishas a 17 per cent share of India’s$7-billion beer market.

Carlsberg’s probes and aboardroom dispute come amidother challenges: an antitrustinvestigation last year conclud-ed Carlsberg India colluded foryears on prices with rivals, tho-ugh a final ruling is pending.

An India affiliate of the Pric-ewaterhouseCoopers (PwC)network recently resigned as

Carlsberg India’s financial audi-tor after declining for two yearsin a row to give an opinion onthe brewer’s financials, amidboardroom tussles and internalprobes into local practices,Reuters reported in November.

Since at least 2019, Carlsberghad been probing allegationslevelled by some past and cur-rent employees around promo-tion of alcohol in prohibited are-as, kickbacks and bribery,according to regulatory filingsand the document prepared bylocal PwC affiliate Price Water-house Chartered Accountants.

The investigation “conclud-ed that there were internal con-trol weaknesses... potentialimproper payments made togovernment officials/other per-

sons and possibility of misap-propriation of company’s fundsover past years by certain cus-tomers,” says the PwC docu-ment, which details the basis ofthe firm’s resignation.

“However, the amount ofmisappropriation and otheramounts relating to inappro-priate practices could not beascertained.” Responding toquestions from Reuters, Carls-berg said, “We cannot rule outbreaches of our policies andcode of conduct.”

The investigations “speci-fied that Carlsberg Group’s poli-cies were breached in the perioduntil 2018” and the probes iden-tified the need for further stre-ngthening of controls, the com-pany said. REUTERS

Industrial and warehousingspace absorption is expected togrow by 83 per cent to 47.7 mil-lion square feet in 2021. Thishas been driven by robustgrowth in e-commerce andmanufacturing sectors as wellas rising demand in tier I andtier II cities, according to SavillsIndia, a global property consul-tancy firm.

Third party and e-com-merce sectors continued todrive warehousing demand,accounting for 60 per cent ofthe total absorption in 2020, fol-lowed by manufacturing at 24per cent. The growing numberof firms in these sectors and thehuge Indian consumption mar-ket have whipped up invest-ment prospects of India’s ware-house sector. In 2020, theindustrial and warehousingmarket witnessed investmentsin excess of $1 billion.

National Capital Region(NCR) had the highest absorp-tion in 2020 at 25 per cent fol-lowed by Pune at 15 per cent.Mumbai and Chennai sawabsorption at 13 per cent each

while for Kolkata it stood at12 per cent.

Cities such as Ludhiana,Lucknow, Coimbatore, Jaipur,Guwahati, Bhubaneswar, Nag-pur and Patna witnessedaround 3 million square feetabsorption in 2020. These citiesare likely to gain momentumin 2021 with e-commerce andthird-party logistics firms capi-talising on consumption-drivengrowth and pushing thedemand for warehousingspace, it said.

On the supply side, SavillsIndia expects a 113 per centincrease in supply to 47.9 mil-lion square feet in 2021. Despiteconstruction activities gettingaffected due to the lockdown,the top eight cities of India wit-nessed a fresh supply of 22.4

million square feet last year.NCR accounted for 22 per centof the total supply witnessed in2020 followed by Chennai (20per cent), and Bengaluru (12 percent). The overall industrial andwarehousing space stock isexpected to increase by 21 percent to 278 million square feet in2021 compared to 230 millionsquare feet last year.

“Growing demand for coldchain, pharmaceutical ware-houses as well as growth in e-commerce and organised retailare likely to drive warehousingdemand in 2021. In addition,strong macro-economic funda-mentals and government’s pol-icy support in implementationwill continue to fuel growth forthe entire sub-asset class ofindustrial and logistics sectors,”

said Srinivas N, managing direc-tor (MD), industrial and logis-tics, Savills India.

Warehousing vacancies alsodecreased by 170 basis pointsfrom 10.2 per cent in 2019 to 8.5per cent in 2020 and rental val-ues remained stable in 2020across major cities.

“India is emerging as analternate investment destina-tion for manufacturing. Foreignmanufacturing companies areplanning to shift their bases toIndia. This will lead to an incr-eased demand for both ready‘high-spec fitted out’ and cus-tom-built industrial spacesacross India, particularly fromgrowing sectors such as FMCG,energy, automobile, electron-ics, pharmaceuticals and med-ical devices, among others,”said Srinivas.

“Diverse investment oppor-tunities and growing interest indeveloping infrastructure arou-nd integrated industrial town-ships, highways, ports, inlandwaterways, inland containerdepots, and free trade and ware-housing zones will give a boostto the sector. Automation andmanpower will steer disruptionsin the years ahead,” Savills said.
