13 Ways To Stay Organized: Organizing Tips To Maximize Efficiency

Clutter and chaos. They’re easy to succumb to and, given the opportunity, can keep you chasing inefficient tasks justto stay afloat. If you’re like most, you’re short on free time as it is. The last thing anyone wants to do is turn a simpletwenty minute project into two hours of wasted effort. These simple organizing tips will help you stay focused, productive and will free up hours in your week. Here are 13 ways to stay organized.

1. Make Your Bed First Thing In The Morning

1/13

Page 2: 13 ways to stay organized

This is one of the easiest ways to stay organized, yet, so effective. Roll out of bed, straighten the sheets, pull up thecovers and set your pillows. Two minutes of your time will double your productivity. I was amazed at how well thisworked. Try it for at least a week. You’ll thank me.

2. Clean Your Desk

2/13

Page 3: 13 ways to stay organized

This one should be incredibly obvious. If you’re working in a dump, you’re going to be useless. Playing hide and goseek with paperwork is wasting time. Not to mention your mindset is going to suffer. Buy a cheap file box or cabinet.Throw away old supplies you don’t use. Throw a plant on your desk and keep it alive. Your work will reflect your workspace. And your cash flow will reflect your work.

3. Make A To-Do List

3/13

Page 4: 13 ways to stay organized

Keeping a to-do list incredibly simple. Put your biggest tasks first and make sure you’re focusing on essentials. Don’tfill your to-do lists with time killers. You want to have a few main goals every day. If you’re on a deadline to put areport together for the CEO of the company, watering your cat and researching vacation spots should probably stayoff your to-do list. Keep it short and simple. If you do these things, a to-do list can be an incredible tool.

4. Google Calendar

4/13

If you’re not utilizing technology for organization yet, you need to. Keeping a desk planner, wall planner and a dayplanner is ineffective and a huge wast of time. Google calendars can be added to most any smart device andcomputer. Enter your take, deadline, set an alert and be done. Every one of your devices will remind you when youhave an event or deadline coming up. One of the easiest and most crucial ways to stay organized. Plus you don’twaste money and paper.

5. Evernote

5/13

Page 6: 13 ways to stay organized

This is probably the most incredible organization app in the world. Yet again, technology simplifies life. If you don’thave this app, you need to get it now. I use it daily. I’ve completely eliminated paper from all notes, lists, etc. Myfiance and I share an account. Every time she writes something, I see it. Grocery lists are never an issue. It worksfor tracking hours. I even use this app at the gym to track weight, reps and time on machines. If you have Googlecalendar and Evernote, you’ll be unstoppable.

6. Minimize Distractions

6/13

Page 7: 13 ways to stay organized

Distractions lead to unfinished tasks. Unfinished tasks lead to clutter. None of these are inducive to productivity.Facebook will be there when you finish what you’re doing. The text you got can wait. If you focus on one task at atime, you minimize the amount of time it takes to do each task. This will give you plenty of time to play Candy Crushafter your tasks are complete. Email, social media, cell phones… all are distracting and will only hurt you in the end.Put it down. I know you can do it.

7. Just Because It’s Cheap Or Free, Doesn’t Mean You Need It

7/13

Page 8: 13 ways to stay organized

This is an organization killer at it’s deadliest. Home and office alike. I’ve seen people spend hundreds of dollars onclothing that sat in the closet for months with the tags still on. All because it was on sale. You’ll find yourself will fullclosets, full drawers, full shelves and clutter to your eyeballs. Before you buy a sale item, ask yourself if it’s going tohelp or hurt you. This will help your organization and your wallet.

8. A Little Every Day Keeps It Painless

Stop putting weeks and months between organizing. If you organize and clean a bit every day, it’s never a chore.

8/13

But minutes turn to hours quickly. Before you know it, hours turn to days and you lose an entire weekend just makingsure you can function properly moving forward. Work smarter, not harder.

9. Don’t Be Afraid To Throw Things Away

Number nine on our ways to stay organized list… STOP HOARDING! I’m adamant about this because I used tokeep birthday cards for upwards of 7-8 years. I had piles upon piles of clutter. Not only is this not productive, it’sgross after a while. Too much can be physically, mentally and socially unhealthy. Bust out the trash can, throw awaythe birthday cards and stop saving magazines you never read. The new Cosmos are updated and they’re only a fewbucks.

10. Outsource Tasks

9/13

Page 10: 13 ways to stay organized

This stuff is what dreams are made of. There are simple, mundane tasks that we do every day that can easily betaken care of by somebody online making $4/hr. I’ve just started outsourcing and, within just a few weeks, havefreed more than 15 hours a week in computer tasks. I’m spending a grand total of about $70/wk. Worth every penny.Outsourcing keeps your mind on the important tasks and takes the little details out of the equation. Organizationmade simple.

11. Plan Your Meals

Meal prep is great on a number of levels. It’s easy on the wallet, great for your health if you do it right and it cutsdown on wasted time going out for food. You can save hundreds within a matter of weeks and increase productivityby a ton. Enough said.

10/13

12. Set Uncomfortable Deadlines

Too many of us take our sweet time on simple tasks. An hour to mow the lawn, an hour to check email, an hour toclean the kitchen and a two hour nap. Stop wasting time doing things slower than you should be. If you think it willtake you an hour, set a deadline for a half hour. If you think it will take you a week, do it in two days. If the thought ofdoing a weeks worth of work in two days makes you squirm a bit, good! make it happen. You’ll have three days toeither knock out some more work or pretend like you are.

13. Do It Now

11/13

Page 12: 13 ways to stay organized

Finally, topping off our organization tips, make it happen now! Not after a break. Not tomorrow. Do it now! A body inmotion stays in motion. You’re going to tell the world you’re tired at the end of the day anyway, you might as well betired and productive. When you have a task that needs to be completed, do it immediately if you can. This will createfree time and promote a cleaner mind and workspace in many ways.

I hope this gave you some ideas on how to clean up your act a bit. Implement at least three of these ideas this week. It’s OK to gradually add methods as you go as long as you’re taking action. Never, EVER set a goal without taking atleast a small action to set yourself in motion.
