Hello all,We started the year with our

Meet the Officers brunch on the19th of January. Once again theweather was nice and warm, andBill Plumlee and Gary Halliburtoncooked the omelets to perfection. We had plenty of food for the 65plus members and guests who

attended. I want to thank all who helped out andto those who brought delicious side dishes.

Pam and I attended our first Opening Dayalong with Gary and Susan Halliburton andJeanne Stafford, held at Los Angeles Yacht Club. This was the first of many that we will attend thisyear to represent NYCLB. Remember, ourOpening Day will be April 26th, so save that date.

Last month Tommy Wheeler, Dale West andI attended a Food and Beverage managementseminar that was put on by Yacht Racing Unionof So. Cal. We learned the seminar was targetingbigger clubs, but we did get some usefulinformation. One item that hit home was how tobe in the good graces of the state’s AlcoholBeverage Control. In the past couple of months

we have been reminding our members and gueststo wear a name badge, and to not take an alcoholbeverage out past our gate. So please wear aname badge at each event.

There have been times when a memberinvites a guest and the member is not present. We’re asking our members that if you invite aguest, please be present for the event!

I’m looking forward to this year as yourCommodore because I see great times ahead. The calendar is looking full for clubhouse events, yacht racing, and cruise outs. Keep informed ofthese from the Scuttlebutt articles and calendareach month. LaVon Plumlee sent me a flyer fora group outing to an Angels baseball game. I’llcheck into that and see about going in July orAugust.

Well, that’s about all that I have for now. Seeyou at the clubhouse.

The year is beginningwith three new membersalready. Please help me towelcome Milton Valois asour first new member of2014. He has a Sceptor 41and loves to sail it weekly. Iwas lucky enough to beinvited on a Sunday sail with

Milton and his crew. Tom Meyer also joined ourYacht Club. He will be a new member to theDale West family soon, as well as to our familyof members. Fred and Lilly Shelley have alsojoined our club. They are part of the SoCalPotters Club, although their boat is not a WestWight Potter. Their boat is a new sailboat from

Sage Marine, a 17’ pocket cruiser. The SoCalPotters welcome anyone who wants to sail withus on our monthly weekend events. Seehttp://www.howies.net/socalpotter for moreinformation about SoCal Potters. Thanks go to so many of you who havealready paid your 2014 NYCLB dues. Thismakes the job of your officers so much easier. If you haven’t yet sent your dues, please maila check along with your completed 2014Renewal Form. The information is on pages 7and 8 of this Scuttlebutt.

February is upon us and theyear is now in full swing. OnJanuary 19th we had our firstevent of the year, a champagnebrunch to introduce your new flagofficers. The weather did us proudafter the cold spell we werehaving, and a great time was hadby all. Thank you to all who

attended and made this day so special.New Membership Card- again no new card will

be issued this year for members renewing theirmembership. Instead, Victor will send out a stickerfor you to place on your existing cards, which makesyou welcome at other yacht clubs.

If you have misplaced your membership cardand need a new one, please let me know and onewill be sent to you.

Name tabg - When do we get them? Name tagsare ordered when you become a new member andare part of your Initiation package along with aNYCLB burgee. If you have lost your badge, had a

change to your current badge, or just would like anextra for the car, you can order a new one. There isa form on the web or just ask me. Please send acheck, including the number of badges you areordering (cost is $15.00 per badge up front charge)and what you want the badge(s) to read. Once thebadges are in I will let you know. Badges will not beordered without the up front fee.

Hopefully I have answered your questions, but ifyou still have concerns, or need more clarification, please feel free to contact me on my cell at 562-212-7449.

Remember I’m here to serve you and enjoydoing so.

Well, until next month that’s all. I hope to seeyou at the Friday night pot lucks.

Jeanne Stafford, Jr. Staff Commodore

Roy Queen, Rear CommodoreJanuary 8th was my third

meeting as part of the Boardfor NYCLB. I have been a partof many board meetings overthe years, and I can tell you itis a real pleasure to beworking with such a dedicatedgroup of people. The meetings

are positive, well run with great ideaspresented. I look forward to the events plannedand hope everyone will join us and attend asmany gatherings as possible.

I was happy to see that we received threenew applications for memberships inDecember. Typically December is a slowmonth for getting new memberships. This is agreat way to start 2014 and a good sign that

our club continues to grow and be an activeparticipant in the yachting community.

Heads up to all you guys reading this:remember, Valentine’s Day is coming up onFriday, February 14th. Don’t leave yourfavorite gal sitting home. Take her out for anice evening at the club house for our Fridaynight pot-luck. Some flowers and a cardwouldn’t hurt either. We need to keep ourwomen happy.

Here we are in the month ofJanuary and sailboat racing hasalready started. How nice it is tolive in California. If we lived backeast we would be bundled upracing on ice boats. I’ve neverseen a crewed ice boat race-hasanyone seen that before?

Talking about sailboats andracing, some of our members who

are representing the NYCLG in races are doing verywell. Chris Mewes J109 “Shadowfax” and PaulTurang Cat 30 “Dawn Patrol” are in First Place in their

Class. Heinz Butner J109 “Rapto,” the boat I race on,is in a respectable 4th out of 14 yachts.

There are no upcoming NYCLB races until May,but the Long Beach Harbor Series that we’re part ofstarts in March. Also, if you have a West Wight Potteror any trailer sail boat, join that group of sailors for arace on February 22nd. Details to follow on theseevents.

Keep it up - it’s a great start for the year.

Hello All,Welcome to the new

addition to the Scuttlebutt, yourFleet Captain’s “NYCLBCruising and Social Activities.”As we approach the 2014“season” I will use Scuttlebutt, flyers, Fleet Captain e-mails

and a new web page section to provide info and solicitfeedback. There are a LOT of activities coming up andI look forward to all of the Cruise-Ins, Outs, andnon-boating events planned…

Some events to watch for….Cruise-Outs toShoreline Yacht Club, Cabrillo Yacht Club, KingHarbor, American Legion Yacht Club, anAvalon/Isthmus cruise, an Emerald Bay cruise, BalboaYacht Club, and more! Also Cruise-Ins for Labor Day,Memorial Day and the almost famous 4th of JulyMargaritaville Bash, plus non-boating events likeBarney’s, the Luau, Charity brunches. We have a fullschedule!

With all that is planned we need to remember weare a club, a group of people, all volunteers, who enjoyboating, our fellow members, and our second-to-none location, and that these events happen onlywith your support. That said, you will be receiving anemail from me seeking “Hosts” for events - to helpplan set-up and teardown, food for the event, collectfees and serve as “OD,” schedule activities during the

event…You get the general idea! It’s a great way toget involved, give back, and meet members withwhom you may not yet have had an opportunity tospeak! I look forward to your response and supportwith this.

Coming up is the Shoreline Yacht Club Cruise-Out. There are several things to note…In planningthese events it is imperative that RSVP’s are madeas soon as possible. My goal is to have the completeseason available in the next week or so and with that, allow you an opportunity to plan ahead. Space islimited at most of these facilities so the earlier I canget info to the Port Captains the better chance wehave of getting not only the quantity of slips we needbut also better locations.

Lastly, when we cruise out, we need to rememberwe are guests to our host club as well asrepresentatives of our club. Let’s be mindful of thestandards of yachting protocol, fly our burgee proudly, represent what the NYCLB stands for, and promoteour club as being the premier “smallest” yacht club inthe area!!!

Thank you all!
