If you know of someone sick, recovering

from surgery or illness, or in distress please

notify me so a card from the members of the

Detachment can be sent to them, or a phone

call made to check up on them.

From the Helm

Tim Hutchison– Commandant

The month of May has arrived in Indianapolis, which means the 100th run-

ning of the “greatest spectacle in racing” is right around the corner. It also

means we are getting closer to the 93rd Marine Corps League National Con-

vention in Tulsa, OK in August. If you have never attended a National Con-

vention, plan on attending one. Info has been sent out to all members and

the link to the 2016 convention will be in the Scuttlebutt. 2017’s conven-

tion will be in Overland Park, KS, which is a little closer to Indy.

Our detachment leadership has new members, which I hope will instill

new ideas into the future of the detachment. If you wish to see how they

perform, please attend out next membership meeting on May 12th. I be-

lieve you will be impressed with their enthusiasm and knowledge.

As always, we are looking for ideas to bring our members closer. There

are several events which you should place on your calendar. Family day

will be July 23rd, 8th Annual Leatherneck Golf Open August 20th, and the

Indianapolis Mayor’s Veteran Appreciation day on August 13th. Info on all

these events can be found in the Scuttlebutt and on our web site.

My staff is always available to assist our membership. If there are ideas or

info which needs passed to the entire detachment, just contact us and we

will disseminate as appropriate. We would love to see more of you each

month. Remember, the proceedings of the meetings are important and

your input means a lot.

Hope this article finds all of you well. Keep in touch.

HISTORY OF THE MARINE CORPS LEAGUE

The Marine Corps League (MCL) is a Marine Corps oriented organization comprised of persons who are serving, or have served honorably in the United States Marine Corps "on active duty", for not less than ninety (90) days, and persons who are serving, or have served in the United States Marine Corps reserve, and have earned no less than ninety (90) reserve retirement credit points, and United States Navy Corpsmen who have trained and served with United States Marine Fleet Marine Forces (FMF) units in excess of ninety (90) days and have earned the Marine Corps device (clasp) worn on the service ribbon, and those who earn the Warfare Device authorized for FMF Corpsmen, shall be eligible for regular membership in the Marine Corps League.

Interested individuals, who are not qualified to join as regular members of the League, may be ac-cepted as Associate Members.

The Marine Corps League was established in June 1923, during a reunion in New York, of Marines who had served in the 1st World War. The League was chartered by an act of the United States Congress on August 4

th, 1937. The League was authorized to assist and aid in presenting claims be-

fore the Veterans Administration by Public Law # 243, passed by the 74th Congress of the United

States of America.

PURPOSES OF THE MARINE CORPS LEAGUE

To preserve the traditions, promote the interest and perpetuate the history of the United States Marine Corps.

To band together those who are now serving in the United States Marine Corps, eligible FMF Corpsmen and those who have been honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps, together in fellowship, that they may effectively promote the ideals of American freedom and de-mocracy.

To help fit its members for the duties of citizenship and to encourage them to serve ably as citi-zens as they have served our nation under arms.

To hold sacred the memory and history of the men and women who have given their lives to the Nation.

To foster love for the principles which they have supported by blood and valor since the founding of the Republic.

To aid voluntarily and to render assistance to all Marines and FMF Corpsmen, uniformed and civilian, as well as their widows and orphans.

To create a bond of comradeship between those in the service and those who have returned to civilian life.

To perpetuate the history of the United States Marine Corps and by fitting acts to observe the anniversaries of historical occasions of peculiar interest to Marines.

Received from General Carol Mutter:

VA Expands Hepatitis C Drug Treatment

Expanded funding now allows VA to provide increased drug therapy at VA facilities nationwide

WASHINGTON – The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) today announced that it is now able to fund care for all Veterans with hepatitis C for Fiscal Year 2016 regardless of the stage of the patient’s liver disease. The move follows increased funding from Congress along with reduced drug prices.

“We’re honored to be able to expand treatment for Veterans who are afflicted with hepatitis C,” says VA Under Secretary for Health Dr. David Shulkin. “To manage limited resources previously, we established treatment priority for the sickest pa-tients. Additionally, if Veterans are currently waiting on an appointment for community care through the Choice Program, they can now turn to their local VA facility for this treatment or can elect to continue to receive treatment through the Choice Pro-gram.”

VA has long led the country in screening for and treating hepatitis C. VA has treated over 76,000 Veterans infected with hepatitis C and approximately 60,000 have been cured. In addition, since the beginning of 2014, more than 42,000 patients have been treated with the new highly effective antivirals. In fiscal year 2015, VA allocated $696 million for new hepatitis C drugs (17 per-cent of the VA’s total pharmacy budget) and in fiscal year 2016, VA anticipates spending approximately $1 billion on hepatitis C drugs. VA expects that with the expansion, many more Veterans will be started on hepatitis C treatment every week this fiscal year.

In addition to furnishing clinical care to Veterans with hepatitis C, VA Research continues to expand the knowledge base regard-ing the disease through scientific studies focused on effective care, screening, and healthcare delivery including to female Veter-ans and Veterans with complicated medical conditions in addition to hepatitis C.

For additional information on Hepatitis C treatments Veterans can log onto http://www.hepatitis.va.gov/patient/hcv/index.asp.

Indiana Chapter (IN-1) Women Marines Association

We are a band of Marines who happen to be women who want to keep the traditions of the Marine Corps alive.

We volunteer our time and preserve and promote the history of the Marines.

We encourage and perpetuate the spirit of comradeship among those women who served in the Marine Corps.

http://www.indymarines.org/pages/wma_in-1.htm

Since 1918, women have answered the call to serve proudly in the United States Marines and the role of women in the Marines has evolved and expanded. All Wom-en Marines can look forward to the future proudly, while never forgetting the women who made this future possible.

In 1918, the Secretary of Navy allowed women to enroll for cler-ical duty in the Marine Corps. Officially, Opha Mae Johnson is credited as the first woman Marine. Johnson enrolled for service on August 13, 1918; during that year some 300 women first en-tered the Marine Corps to take over stateside clerical duties from battle-ready Marines who were needed overseas. The Ma-rine Corps Women's Reserve was established in February 1943. June 12th, 1948, Congress passed the Women's Armed Services Integration Act and made women a permanent part of the regular Marine Corps.
