    The vast resources o the worlds oceans needto be ully utilized to beneit human activi-ties in a sustainable manner. The maritimeindustry has made use o the ocean in a very

    responsible way, but inland water resourceshave been much more underutilized and un-der-maintained, especially or transportation.In an age so dire to ind ways to mitigate thechallenge o climate change and its associ-ated impacts, recent research has indicatedthat inland water transportation representsthe cleanest mode o transportation. Thisindicates the potential or an increase in us-age o inland waterways or transportation.The use o inland water transportation isorecast to rise because o the potential orshort sea shipping, expanding deep-sea opera-tions, and alternative mitigation options orclimate change. Coastal water transporta-tion is associated with low probability, high

    consequence accidents, which makes reliabil-ity requirements or the design and operationor saety and environmental protection verynecessary. Collision represents the largest

    percentage o accident risk scenarios amongwater transportation risk actors. This paperdiscusses recent work in risk and reliability-

    based design, and sae and eicient vesseloperation in coastal waters. This includessystems based approach that covers proac-tive risk as well as holistic, multiple-criteriaassessment o waterways variables requiredto develop mitigation options and decisionsupport or preventive, protective and con-trol measures or various collision accidentscenarios within inland waterways.
