15th March 2019 Grange Academy Celebrate World Book Day Thursday 7th March 2019 was World Book Day. Grange Academy recognised this day in style. The theme for the school was animals and students and staff did not disappoint with their creative costumes. Many thanks to ………… for coming into Grange and giving every class the opportunity to see some birds of prey up close. It was great to see so many parents at then end of the day who came to meet their son/daughter and have a short demonstration of the birds. A great day was had by all. Elm Class Ethan: I liked seeing that really big owl because it had a lot of feathers and it looked really fluffy. It needed that many feathers to keep him nice and warm because he lives in the arctic where it is very cold. Harry: World Book Day was lots of fun. On world Book Day I was a sloth. When I was a sloth I went super slow and I had a hood with a sloth on it. The best bit about being a sloth is being lazy. Taylon: I liked the owl which flew over our head because the lady flicked her glove and the bird flew straight to her. His claws were cool because if the lady didn’t have the glove the owl would have scratched her by accident because his nails are so long and strong. Kaschan: I liked the kestrel because it was so cute and I saw its patterns. I saw it when it flapped its wings. It was so good. The kestrel can fly really fast and I liked it when it bobbed its head. I wanted to stroke it but I couldn’t. Grace: I liked seeing the Barn Owl because it had gold and it has patterns. It was pretty and we got to see it fly over our heads. We could not hear it fly though. Ash Class Noah: I dressed up as a shark. Robert: I had my face painted. I was a dog. Woof woof. Lewis: I saw the owls. I dressed up like a dog. Ben: I dressed up as a moose and I painted my face. We saw owls and one was really big. It was my favourite. Dove Class Alex W: World Book Day was pretty good actually because I enjoyed the birds of prey. Marshall The Great Grey Owl was the best, it had a wide wing span and she flew over me and I felt great about that. Brook: I liked the birds of prey because they were awesome. I liked all of the birds and the smallest was the oldest! Irfanul: I made my own book cover for ‘Journey to Jo’Burg’. I enjoyed reading that book because Naledi and Tiro were trying to help their sick brother Dineo and they had to walk all the way to Johannesburg in South Africa. Alex R: The best part of World Book Day was seeing the birds of prey. The birds flew over my head and I was a little bit nervous because I didn’t want the bird to poop on me! Howard Class Ewan: World book day was so cool. There was a book sale where I found two recipe books and the birds of prey were also cool. Gabriel: I was a gorilla for World Book Day and I bought some books. Kade: On World Book Day I saw the birds of prey fly but I recognized one of them and it was one that I have held before when I was about 6 so then it was really funny so I was laughing when I realised that it was a bird that I have held. Nathan: It was quite fun because I bought a recipe book and an animal book and a horrible Henry book. I liked the birds of prey because they can fly. In Humanities we have been learning about Fairtrade and why it is important. We have also been working on our wellbeing by exploring how to be confident. Tyla: In humanities we had a Fairtrade

tea party. We had Fairtrade cocoa and all kinds of Fairtrade chocolate too. Robert melted a slice of chocolate in his tea! Tanvir: We have been learning about Fairtrade in Humanities. It is about giving people the right amount of money for their work and helping others. K’Leeer: If parents earn enough the children can go to school. George: Fairtrade is to help farmers to get a fair amount of money for their business and enough for themselves too. Robert: Also we have been learning about confidence. showed which topping they liked. We put lines next to the one they liked. The chocolate spread was the most popular. Sugar was the next popular. balls really far, it was better playing on a real court. Rio: We went to the park in the rain to play tennis, I played against Leon, it was fun, he was a tough opponent. Tommy: We went to the park to play tennis, I enjoyed it because it was a better experience with the proper equipment playing on a real court. It is better to play on the courts, it’s nice to get out of school, it feels more professional. Tia: I enjoyed playing tennis at the park, it was good fun. Pietro: I enjoyed playing tennis at the courts, I prefer playing at the real tennis courts instead of on the playground it is much better. Leon: I liked playing tennis at the courts. On Monday 11th March S5 visited Caldecotte Experience Centre. We had a go at the crate stack. Firstly, Alex, who works at Caldecotte, told us how to be safe and then we got the crates and TJ and Kieran started to build them into a square. We had to put harnesses on and helmets. We all needed to wear helmets even if we didn’t climb the stack. It was difficult but we worked together as a team. Bradley: At Caldecotte I loved the crate stack. I was big

and brave it was scary but I did it. Kieran: At Caldecotte we built crates as high as possible and then knocked them down. After that we went treasure hunting. TJ: At Caldecotte we did crate stacking it was fun as we had to work as a team. I enjoyed the day it was relaxing and I learnt a lot. Abiah: The best bit about Caldecotte was the crate stack. Me, Rebecca, Bradley and Hannah fell off a lot. We worked as a team it was great fun. Hannah: I went to Caldecotte for the day. We did the

crate stack we got on them then we fell off and then we got on again. Darren pulled my rope to help me stand up on the crate. Rebecca: I enjoyed the high ropes because we had to stack some crates. Howard class have been learning about habitats in Science. Then we made our own habitat boxes in DT. Ewan: My habitat is about the animals in the rainforest. I

included monkeys, and a safari adventurer. The rainforest has got loads of trees in it and it will have a river in it. Gabriel: I made a bamboo forest. It is a habitat for pandas. It was easy to make, I stuck paper on it to make it. Kade: it is a rainforest theme for tigers and a frog. There is a couple of cardboard rolls which are tree like. Nathan: My one is quite impressive because it has a waterfall on it. It’s got a snake and a monkey hanging on a tree and a frog which is sort of camouflaged under the water. Harry: My box has features of the rainforest jungle in it. I added a tiger and a crocodile and a hippo and a tarantula. The rainforest is really wet and dark. Allen: I didn’t use the animals yet. I made a blue water, with seaweed, rocks, and sand. The dolphin lives in the sea. Daniela: I made a fishy habitat. So, I used a dolphin and a shark and a jellyfish. I used a string to make the fish look like they were swimming in the water.

Children (and adults!) in Elm Class enjoy our daily Wordsearch Battle where we race each other to get all the words first! Miss Breare likes to give us really really tricky ones so we get to practise lots of skills like word and letter recognition, working

memory, directional language, teamwork, patience, manners and being graceful competitors (even if we don’t come first!). Ethan: I like doing wordsearches and I like coming first sometimes. It is hard to come first all the time because it is tricky and Miss Breare wins. Sohaib: I liked coming first on Tuesday that was my favourite bit because I even beat everyone especially Miss Jones and Miss Breare. I like looking for secret words. I like helping my mates when I have finished. Harry: I like doing wordsearches because when it comes to tricky ones we get diagonals. Backwards, backwards diagonal, backwards up, backwards down, backward across. They are fun because I get to race other people and Kirsty sometimes gets first place or Miss Breare. Miss Jones won when Miss Breare wasn’t here… Charlie: I like racing against the children. I like hard words like ‘charismatic’. My favourite wordsearch was the football team one and the biscuits because I like both. Taylon: I like our battle with wordsearches because

every time I can’t find a word people help me and I feel happy with my friends. If I am angry outside and I come into wordsearches it helps me calm down. Kaschan: I like doing wordsearches because it doesn’t matter if I am last. I finished the first one. I like them because they are fun and I am proud of myself when I finish. My favourite one was the animal one. Tamsin: I like racing against teachers because it’s in my brain and I can do it really fast and I won. I like helping people once I’ve finished but it’s tricky to help because I have to use my words and not show them the answers. Chloe: I like both of the wordsearches because I finished them and I practise at home because I’ve got an app on my iPad. I am getting much quicker at them now and I am really proud of myself. Grace: Wordsearches are my favourite part of the day because if we come in angry we can calm down and work with our friends. I didn’t used to find wordsearches easy but now I do because I have practised. Kirsty: Miss Breare is very quick at wordsearches and she is a flash at them but I work hard and try to beat her at wordsearches every day! Sometimes I do win and I am very happy but I remember to say well done even when I don’t win.

S3 News This week S1B have enjoyed many interesting lessons and activities this week. Last week we enjoyed the birds of prey for World Book Day. We had great PE in the fitness suite. In food tech making our own sandwiches with different fillings. In Art we were writing about our thoughts on artist paintings of doughnuts. In English and Maths lessons we learnt lots and did assessment too. Finley: In P.E. I was lifting weights,

running and doing chest compression, all to build big muscles. Tino: Experiments in science are fun. I have grown broad beans in sunlight and in the dark to see which will grow best. Natasha: I really enjoyed art this week. I was writing what I think about a doughnut an artist painted. I like the painting because it had pink icing and lots of colourful sprinkles. Jo: English has been interesting. I did my spelling and reading test this week. Zack: In Maths, I have learn lots of numbers and telling the times like half past and o’clock. Brooke: I like cooking. I made a lovely cheese sandwich, I buttered it first before adding the cheese. Jazmin: I enjoyed art club this week as I made a lollypop stick decoration.

S1B News S3 have started a new topic in maths this week, it seems to be really interactive and interesting. Giovanni: We are talking about dates and time. Jessica: We are learning about days of the week, special dates and time. I

find telling the time tricky. April: I now know when St. Valentine’s Day is, also St. Patrick’s Day. The Irish celebrate this day. Camron: We looked into how long our school terms are, and the key information about them. Sometimes we have a really long term compared to others. James: Every four years is leap year, which puts an extra day on February – so there are 29 days instead of 28. Joshua: Maths was great today, I like learning about the dates of celebrations. Ben: I know when all the special events are now, I didn’t realise that months are a measure of time.

Oak class have become bucket fillers this week! We have read the story ‘How full is your bucket? For kids’ by Mary Reckmeyer. We know that a compliment is when you say something nice about someone else, so we are working very hard to notice other people and compliment them for their actions. We have been recording these

and filling up our bucket! Jake: A compliment is saying something nice to others. To fill up other people’s buckets notice other people being kind! A good example is Felix, I like your story. Amy: Something nice and good that you say. You look nice today. Your voice is nice and smooth. Chibunna: You can be nice to your friend for the compliment and be nice to people. You can say ‘your work is beautiful,’ and say ‘you’re nice to me.’ Kaleem: People are kind. People might compliment me on my hair. Joshua: Bucket.
