THROUGH THE YEARS1966-1971

Kennedy was President, Maris hit 61, and ground was being turned for a new school in the east valley - Talley Acade­my, In the past 25 years, the school, now known to us as Phoenix Country Day, has exploded into what we see to­day. From its modest beginnings - a cou­ple of classrooms and an auditorium/ cafeteria named after a Mr. Clayton B. Burch - PCDS had increased six fold in enrollment to become one of the finest school in the Phoenix metropolitan area.

Granted, it was not an easy road. From zoning restriction squabbles to enormous debts, PCDS had its share of troubles. But the school, as the motto goes, Perservered, and now we reap the rewards of the blood, sweat, and tears of the past. In the following pages, we will take a look back, as well as a look ahead, to what PCDS was, is, and might be.

An age of miracles. The Apollo pro­gram, led by Neil Armstrong, set man on the moon; The New York Mets, led by Tom Seaver, won the World Series; and PCDS, led by John I. Yellott, quadrupled from its original size. In addition to a new science building came three new classrooms, a boy’s locker room, a wrestling room (the old band room), and in 1971, PCDS received a grant for the John I. Yellott Aquacenter.

These years of PCDS history were not only characterized by growth, but by the personality of Headmaster Yellott. Be­hind his leadership, we turned around financially and enrollment increased to almost 400 students.

During these five years, Nixon, Brun- ing, Houle, and Singer arrive on the scene.

1961-1966From the Bay of Pigs to the start of

Vietnam, the early sixties was a rocky road for the United States as well as for PCDS. The first few years of the school’s existence were characterized by deficit financing and small enroll­ment.

But, as in all things, with the bad, came the good. The deficit was conve­niently taken care of annually by two or three “ angels” on the Board of Trust­ees, and enrollment steadily increased over the five year period.

As John, Paul, Ringo, and George hit the top of the charts, PCDS’ football team was hitting the gridiron. Football team? Yes, PCDS had a full-fledged, and completely awful, football team in the early sixties. The school also was devel­oping a drama program which, under the leadership of one David O. Raymond, performed much more impressively than the football team did.

As this period in PCDS history came to an end, Lyndon Johnson and Chet Seroka had already completed two years of service in their respective posi­tions.

AND SO ON1972-1976

A time of changes. While the fash­ion world was taking a turn for the worse, PCDS was making some monumental changes for the better.

Not only were there new buildings (the completion of the Aquacenter and four new tennis courts) but there were changes in the curricu­lum. The computer became part of our program. Pursuit o f Perspec­tives (now New Horizons) was ad­ded. The football team was dropped for good, and a concrete foundation for a financially successful future

was laid.We saw a new headmaster, Mr.

Robert Pierce, and a new Upper School Dean, Mr. James Roof. A new Director o f College Counseling was found in J976 in Mr. Paul Schweikher, and Madame Arlette Jacques, Mr. Robert Wilson, and Mr. Les Felton, Jr. jumped on the PCDS band wagon.

1977-1986This decade in PCDS history saw

us truly become the fine institution we are today. Buildings sprung up

from every where (The Peter S, Fire­stone Memorial Upper School builds ing. The Gymnasium, and the music building, to name a few). Enrollment grew to an all time high, and PCDS was accepted into the prestigious Cum Laude Society.

Dr. Joel C. Monell was the PCDS headmaster for these ten years, and led the school to times of financial stability and prosperity.

In closing the book of the past, we take a sentimental sigh, and look towards the future. . .

1987 AND INTO THE FUTURE

spirit. With a new Head of School to lead us, PCDS rede­fined the word learning. Whether it was in the classroom or on the sports field all the students, from Lower School to Upper School, could be seen having a blast.

As we proceed into our sec­ond 25 years, we can only imag­ine where PCDS is heading. We have our Ten Year Plan, of course, but that doesn’t tell all. For all we know, PCDS could become a nationally ranked bas­ketball power or Mr, Bruning could quit teaching to run for president. Anticipation. . .

LUNCH-A NOURISHING EVENT

Eating lunch was a contro­versial subject at Phoenix Country Day. You either liked

what you ate or you ate it with­out a choice. The Lower and Mid­dle Schools seemed to be quite content, with their weekly menjjs at the cafeteria. And, ex­cept f ° r the p^jseraple two weeks in October, the Seniors were satisfied with their off cam­pus lunch excursions, especially when Toph was buying. They roamed freely from Pete’s to Taste. The Juniors, when they finally got the all-mighty O ff Campus Privilege, rejoiced in their newly found freedom.

There was a group of unsung heroes, however, who had to make the daily pilgrimage to the dreaded lunch truck. These low­er classmen survived and you could always find at least some­one on a diet.

Gimme a P. . . C. D SHSpirit, what does that word

mean? Well, if you don’t know, all you had to do was to take a look at the PCD S campus during the 1986-87 school year. From the start, our first pep rally coup­led with blue and gold week, our spirit has, as the cliche goes, soared.

With Dave and Dave leading the charge, we saw the Eagle Spirit increase 10 fold, enough to hold us over the summer.

1 cal school life of a PCDS student in one word would be like trying to eat spaghetti with chop-sticks. The PCDS student body is an extremely varied one, and to each, his own. What we do during our frees, lunch, our classes vary from class to class, period to period, and person to person. Som e study, some sleep, some play Quad Football, or Lecture Hall TV Tag, what­ever it is we enjoy it to the fullest!

Fun and excitement were two prominent features in the Lower School this year. A s a newcomer to PCDS, Dean Worthington noticed the students’ enthusiasm right away, “My first impres­sion w as the willingness of the students to try new learn­ing experienr'-- ” The stu­

THE MIDDLEMENThe Middle School was full

of active, eager, and growing students. Thanks to the facul­ty, the atmosphere was one in which they learned and had fun at the same time. The stu­dents strived for excellence in not only their academic stud­ies, but also in their sports ac­tivities and in their electives. The Middle School stressed work before play, but encour­aged both for the students. Teachers were friends, and al­ways were available to the students for help, advice, or just to joke around with. This added to the personable and friendly feeling generated in the Middle School. These qua­lities are what makes the PCD S Middle School a special place to be.

AT THE TOPFrom rowdy seniors to “ little

freshmen” , the Upper School has grown into a place that the students can be proud to be a part of. The spirit days, the lunches in the quad, the intramu­ral competitions, and many more activities have all helped to add to the rising spirit and the sense of community in the Up­per School. This sense of com­munity is felt throughout the faculty as well as the students.These special student-teacher relationships help add to a re­laxed and enjoyable atm o­sphere. PCDS, with its already well-established reputation for academic excellence, can be ex­pecting great things coming up in the future.

Freshm en C lass! The Class of ’90 is the biggest class to hit the PCDS Upper School. While this class was an energetic bunch, they were, to put it delicately, Freshmen, and with Freshmen come all those wonderful things that Freshmen are prone to do. This class was no exception to the rule, but, in the end, they did leave the rest of the school with the feeling that they had the potential to be­come real contributors in the Upper School. If they survive the summer, this m ass of Frosh may even turn into Sophomores!

SOPHOMORESF inally not Freshmen any­

more, the class of ’89 be­gan to gain a little respect. Whether it was on the sports field or in the classroom, this year’s Sophomores started taking roles as leaders. They began to do things right, prov­ing that, next year, they would be worthy of becoming Upper­classmen. They also proved themselves to be the most di­verse class in the Upper School. From the start of this class to the ‘Enda’ it, each in­dividual could be found doing his own thing. Skaters, intel­lectuals, rockers, jocks, musi­cians . . . you name it, and this class had it. The year end­ed with visions of off-campus privileges, English III, and all those other things associated with becoming a member of the few, the proud, the Upper­classmen.

JUNIORSC hange - that one word de­

scribes perfectly the 1986-1987 school year as it pertained to the Class of ’88. Off-Campus adventures, driv­ing a car, college anticipation and preparation, and the plan­ning of The Prom were just a few of the many new responsi­bilities the Juniors undertook, and the class undertook them in stride. From the car wash to college nights to Tokyo Ex­press and back again, the Ju­niors went “ full steam ahead” into what ever they did. In oth­er words, the class set the pace and dared the rest of the school to try and follow. With Seniorhood right around the corner, these new “ leaders and shapers” should make the 1987-1988 school year at least as fun, exciting, and suc­cessful as this year was.

THE CLASS OF ’87They’re history. The PCDS

class of 1987 has said its final goodbye to the white stuccoed walls of Phoenix Country Day. No longer will Dave & Dave hu­mor us at morning meeting. Gone are the days when “Toph’s buying.” After thirteen years at PCDS, lifers Lara Sos- now and Catherine Baggott are gone, too. No more Rhett, Emi­ly, John, and Kevin who suc­ceeded with flying colors in their pursuit in becoming Nick McKay disciples. All of them are off to become the low men on the totem poles - Freshmen once again. O ff to colleges and universities in all corners of the United States.

With all this in mind, the PCDS Upper School bids a very, very fond farewell, know­ing and hoping that you’ll come visit us sometime very, very soon. W e’ll all miss you a whole lot.

not be appreciated. A fter reporters wrote their articles (requiring two weeks o f investigating, researching and writ­ing) the stories were then subjugated to a grueling editing process. The editors were Rhett Reese, Editor; Emily Wolf,Managing Editor; Peter Spiegel, News Editor; Tom Levenberg, Features Editor;Kevin Wernick, Sports Editor; Steve Ozer, Copy Editor; and Mr. Coon, Advi­sor. While they were all hard at work John Pent, Advertising Editor; Clarissa Simek, Photo Editor; and Eddie Harris,Technical Editor were out collecting ads, taking photos, and handling the computers.

Editing efforts culminated in monthly layout sessions. The sessions, lasting over 10 hours on a Saturday, often found the layout staff wading in piles o f computer copy, X-acto knives, and spray glue. Much tribute is deserved on the part o f those select few who broke their backs laying out “ just one more page” .

Hari and the Krishnas exploded into the PCDS music scene, too. All in all, the music program seems to be following its tradi­tional pattern of excellence and innovation.

The new music building was an inspiration for all, and Mr. Les Felton, Jr. was the driving force behind many changes in the program. VARSITY GOLFExtremely respectable - two

words that best describe the Varsi­ty Golf Team. Under the leadership of Coaches Mr. Dashnaw and Mr. Martin as well as Captain Lou Werner, the Eagle golfers compiled a respectable record while compet­ing against schools that were, in some instances, 15 times our size. Over the course of the season, Lou was the medalist (low scorer of the entire match) 3 times and Fresh­man Brett Walton accomplished the feat once. The team, while hav­ing a great year, also has a bright future. With Seniors Eric Werner, Gary Linhart, Bennett Hopper, and Peter Spiegel leading the way, next year’s team will have 7 of 8 players returning. Fore!

VARSITY CHEERLEADERSFor the second year in a row, the PCDS Cheer­

leaders helped to boost the spirit and excitement at the Eagle’s games. Their enthusiasm and skill helped performing teams to defeat opponents. This year, for the first time, there were two cheerleading squads. There was a Varsity Team (captained by Heather Stocker) and a Junior Varsity Team (captained by Carrie Judd). The cheerleaders practiced three times a week, which definitely paid off. With the success they have had, the team, first organized in 1985, will continue to grow and to last.

VARSITY SOCCERThe 1986 Phoenix Country Day

School Varsity Soccer Team had a magnificent year. Being the state champions for three previous consecu­tive years, the soccer team proved once again they had the potential, al­though they were not in a league. As of October 28, the Varsity Soccer team had a record of 10-0 and tying in two games. A place in the play-offs would have most certainly been guaranteed with such respectable showings. How­ever, the team ’s performance did not go unnoticed as it clinched the Chal­lenge Cup against Judson School in three straight victories.

Overall, the entire team put out 100% effort. However, several mem­bers deserve special recognition. Jason Hackett showed excellent athle­tic abilities by building up plays for the offense and adding a couple o f goals to Right: “ Out o f my way!”

help balance the attack. Kris Stathakis displayed great skills and leadership as the captain. Kevin Wernick, John Josephson, and Hugh Daley all re­mained solid defensemen. Apichai Shipper and Greg Janis should be noted for their abilities to hustle about in the foward position. Finally, Billy Dumone was a remarkable player who always seemed to have foiled the oppo­nent’s defense by scoring 23 of the team ’s 57 points in the season.

There is no secret to why the soccer team performed so well. One man must be given credit for its success, Sole Antonijevic. He stressed coopera­tion and team work among players. He also shared many tips from his profes­sional soccer career. The 1986 Varsity Soccer Team will always be a team to be remembered.

‘firsts’ for the Varsity Volley­ball Team. First year in the Class C Division; first year of play in the gymnasium; first year of evening games; and many more ‘firsts’ that are too numerous to mention.

It was also a very difficult year. After losing four of six starters from last year’s team, we began the process of re­building. Moving into a new, and much tougher, league made the process even more

difficult. We lost eight games by three points or less. We lost three matches by two points each.

It was an exciting year in many aspects. If you were in the crowd at the matches, you witnessed some great volley­ball!!

The most exciting ‘first’ is the first PCDS student to be

honored by the C lass C League. Lara Sosnow was honored with All State Sec­ond Team for 1986. Congratu­lations!!

In early November, the Men’s Varsity and Junior Varsity Bas­ketball teams started practicing for what they hoped to be a very successful season. With Coach Curtis Perry at the helm, The Varsity team bolted out to two consecutive victories in the new Class ‘C ’ League. This was not, unfortunately, a foreshadowing of what was to come, however, because the Eagles would pro­ceed to win only one of their re­maining games. Led by co-cap- tains Lou Werner and Apichai Shipper, the team, however, hung tough in almost every game, losing numerous close

games.The Junior Varsity team, in

sharp contrast, although falling one game short of a winning re­cord (7-8), compiled the best re­cord of any JV basketball team in PCD S history, an impressive feat considering that they also had the largest schedule of any JV team. The team was spiri­tually led by Peter ^Sleepy” Spiegel and Bennett “ Brickster” Hopper, while Gary Linhart and Brett Groh led the team on the court. In addition, Coach Brian Ellingson served as an inspira­tion to the entire team.

WOMEN’S VARSITY BASKETBALLStruggle. That one word best

describes the year the Womens Varsity Basketball team exper­ienced in 1987. The spirited team, with rookies abound, struggled through the year with a losing record, but not a loosing attitude. The team and its coach, the patient and knowl­edgeable Ms. Linda Heberling, although disappointed with the

past, are excited about the fu­ture. With many players return­ing, the team plans to turn around its losing ways, and be­come the first women’s basket­

ball team in PCDS history to enc the season with a winning re cord. The future looks bright.

TENNISThe 1986, Eagle Tennis teams were, once again, on the

top of the State Independent League. Both the boys’ and the girls’ teams achieved impressive tournament wins. This year, the Eagles, who will have both a Varsity and Junior Varsity team, are looking forward to the Class “A ” League Competition during the coming season.

BASEBALL & SOFTBALLAs the 1987 Mens’ Varsity Baseball

team heads into the 1987 season, we look back to 1986. The 1986 season saw the Eagles defeat the Judson Cougars for the State Independant Baseball Champion­ship. The team was led by the strong pitching arms o f Seniors Elliot Wernick and All-Stater Tim Richey as well as All- State catcher Greg Janis. Outstanding de­fense was provided by Kevin Wernick. Kris Stathakis, with a big bat and glove, was named the State Tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Going into 1987, the Ea­gles past successes have earned them a Pre-Season ranking by The Arizona Re­

public o f fourth in the state. The team will depend on the leadership o f their Tri-Cap­tains Kevin Wernick, Greg Janis, and Kris Stathakis. Looking back at 1986, the Womens’ Varsity Softball team won the State Independent Championship.

Behind the pitching o f Jennefer Wilson and the leadership o f Tina Simonds, the Eagles won their first Independent soft­ball title. Blending together timely hitting and excellent defense, the Eagles were clearly the class o f the league. That same excitement and energy should be wit­nessed throughout the entire 1987 Wom­ens’ Varsity Softball season.
