“ . . . that which we are, we are,One equal temper of heroic hearts,Make weak by time and fate, but strong in will To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.”

from“ULYSSES”by Alfred, Lord Tennyson

HEADMASTER’S MESSAGE

DR. JOEL C. MONELL

To The Class of 1985

This book will serve as a constant reminder of the variety of experiences you have had at Phoenix Country Day School. It is an important milestone in your life cycle. Treasure it.

Mr. Schweikher, the College Counselor, has called your class “ambitious, adventurous, and flexible” in terms of its college applications. I trust that these qualities along with those of intellectual curiosity and perseverance have been nurtured at P.C.D.S. and will remain with you throughout your lives.

Rollo May said that “the most effective way to ensure the value of the future is to confront the present courageously and constructively.” I think you have done this and I wish you the best in whatever future you pursue.

Sincerely,

Headmaster

So endeth this chronicle. It being strictly a history of a boy, it must stop here; the story could not go much further without becoming the history of a man. OVERALL RECORD 9-3-1The Varsity association football team recent

ly concluded it’s season, compiling an overall record of 10 victories, 3 defeats, and 1 draw.Defending it’s State Championship title from last year, the team finished with a record of 8 wins and 2 defeats in the league, giving it second place in the league and a place against Judson in the championship final.

The final proved to be a close and exciting game which ended in a 3-2 victory and a second State Championship in two years for the PCDS team. Chuck Bain was the team’s leading scorer, and valuable performances were turned in by Seniors Peter Cove, John Snead, John Morey, Henry Sargent, Robert Portnoy, and John Marcarelli who was the MVP in the final. The championship was a great way for the Seniors to finish their soccer careers at PCDS, and though they will be missed next season, its reassuring to see the talent of this year’s 9th, 10th, and 11th graders, which will be so valuable to next year’s team. Congratulations!

This year’s Senate was probably the most active Sen-;, ate P.C.D.S. had had m a while This .was due to ihe addition of an extra representative from each class, much work on their.part, and a general!} move active student body. Events such as the ski trip and others got students involved in fun and excitement while things like sponsoring a deprived child and a community service group gave the Senate a chance to give others some help. In material terms, the Senate provided the Upper School with many new items, and did its best to do the most lor the school in general.

friends: 7-11 and all the games of wallball they want. To John: The word “lump.” And to anyone who cares: my memoirs.

I, Carey Sweet, being here now but not for much longer, leave the following to JS: Too much to say, sneaking around parking lots, re- gretable grad parties, dirty old men, free drinks and propositions, frigid come-ons, body bags, warm champagne (arg), never getting caught, hostility, disdain, New York punkers, may she get fatter, and remember: I like you even though you’re not Jewish! To AM: Money when you’re drunk, love of Foedora and the Phi Sig Frat. To EP, your apartment, you now know what, rubber food and m . . . s, leather, and the death of the child in the park. To BW, the Devilhouse, Donny O’Brien’s Volare, wolves on the beach, and waterbeds. To the rest: You’ve been many, you’ve been cheap, and I forgot you when you left the room. To PF: Good times but the sweetest revenge. To WD: As is Feyd-Rautha to the Baron know I am with you, power greed money lust. To CCS: My confidence, my love and my car (we’ll be richer than he). Finally, to la grande tete avec les petits jambes, Hitler is dead. You can only hope for respect if you realize that rules, not people, are meant to be broken. And so I go. It’s not really a will unless you’ve died, is it?

I, Lauren Upshaw, leave to Kimmie: Political classes, an open mind, and thanks for everything. To Rob P: Conversations in the park with gelatos. To Margie: Men, postcards, and sticky buns and brew. To Sally: The lyrics to
