with all of our respect and gratitude

“ . . . that which we are, we are,One equal temper of heroic hearts,Make weak by time and fate, but strong in will To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.”
from“ULYSSES”by Alfred, Lord Tennyson
To The Class of 1985
This book will serve as a constant reminder of the variety of experiences you have had at Phoenix Country Day School. It is an important milestone in your life cycle. Treasure it.
Mr. Schweikher, the College Counselor, has called your class “ambitious, adventurous, and flexible” in terms of its college applications. I trust that these qualities along with those of intellectual curiosity and perseverance have been nurtured at P.C.D.S. and will remain with you throughout your lives.
Rollo May said that “the most effective way to ensure the value of the future is to confront the present courageously and constructively.” I think you have done this and I wish you the best in whatever future you pursue.
Sincerely,
Headmaster

“It’s casual” “Mrs. Olsen, eat your heart out!”

There is no pain you are receeding, distant ships won’t cover the horizon, you are only coming through in waves, your lips move but I can’t hear what you say. When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse out of the corner of my eye.I turned to look but it was gone.I cannot put my finger on it now, the child is grown, the dream is gone.I have become comfortably numb.

So endeth this chronicle. It being strictly a history of a boy, it must stop here; the story could not go much further without becoming the history of a man. When one writes a novel about grown people, he knows exactly where to stop- that is, with a marriage; but when he writes of juveniles, he must stop where he best can.

Desert Places
Snow falling and night falling fast oh fastIn a field I looked into going pastAnd the ground almost covered smooth in snowBut a few weeds and stubble showing lastThe wood around it have it - it is theirsAll animals are smothered in their lairsI am too absent spirited to count; The lonliness includes me unawaresAnd lonely as it is that lonlinessWill be more lonely ere it will be lessA blanker whiteness of benighted snowWith no expression, nothing to expressThey cannot scare me with their empty spacesBetween stars - on stars where no human race isI have it in me so much nearer homeTo scare myself with my own desert places

OVERALL RECORD 9-3-1The Varsity association football team recent
ly concluded it’s season, compiling an overall record of 10 victories, 3 defeats, and 1 draw.Defending it’s State Championship title from last year, the team finished with a record of 8 wins and 2 defeats in the league, giving it second place in the league and a place against Judson in the championship final.
The final proved to be a close and exciting game which ended in a 3-2 victory and a second State Championship in two years for the PCDS team. Chuck Bain was the team’s leading scorer, and valuable performances were turned in by Seniors Peter Cove, John Snead, John Morey, Henry Sargent, Robert Portnoy, and John Marcarelli who was the MVP in the final. The championship was a great way for the Seniors to finish their soccer careers at PCDS, and though they will be missed next season, its reassuring to see the talent of this year’s 9th, 10th, and 11th graders, which will be so valuable to next year’s team. Congratulations!

This year’s Senate was probably the most active Sen-;, ate P.C.D.S. had had m a while This .was due to ihe addition of an extra representative from each class, much work on their.part, and a general!} move active student body. Events such as the ski trip and others got students involved in fun and excitement while things like sponsoring a deprived child and a community service group gave the Senate a chance to give others some help. In material terms, the Senate provided the Upper School with many new items, and did its best to do the most lor the school in general.
