In a world where technology changes everything, BCIT is at the forefront of that change. When British Columbians look for the latest applied training in technologies and trades, they rely on BCIT to deliver. Staying at the forefront of technological change requires BCIT to maintain strong connections with business and industry and to have the resources to invest in new technology.

The generosity of our donors and supporters is critical to maintaining BCIT’s ability to fulfill its mission. Since 1964, more than 100,000 graduates have used their skills to build BC’s economy and participate in the global marketplace. Many are successful leaders who hire our grads and stay involved with BCIT.

We are sincerely grateful to our donors and supporters for contributing to the Institute’s ongoing success. So many of you have invested more than your financial resources – you have also shared your time and entrepreneurial knowledge to ensure that our research and educational services benefit students, employers and the wider community.

Thank you again for helping BCIT today to secure BC’s future tomorrow.

Sincerely,

Don Wright Bob Bryant Laurie Clarke BCIT President Chair, BCIT Foundation Vice President Development Board of Directors and Executive Director, BCIT Foundation and Alumni Association

THANK YOU

TO BCIT’s DONORS AND FRIENDS,

DONOR FUNDED AWARDS CHANGE STUDENT LIVES

3

If it weren’t for five student awards from generous donors like Garfield Weston and Dr. G. Wynne Powell, Julia Paskovic’s exceptional marketing and leadership talents may have taken a backseat to the stress of meeting her educational and living expenses.

Two months into the Marketing Management diploma program, Julia quit her part-time job in order to keep up with the demanding workload and professional development commitments of the program.

Reluctant to take on a student loan, the psychology graduate from UBC followed a friendly tip and applied for student awards through BCIT Student Financial Aid and Awards.

Julia’s high academic standing, her professional accomplishments and leadership strengths won her more than $12,000 in financial support and the opportunity to take full advantage of her BCIT education.

“It was such a relief to receive these awards,” says Julia. “Donor support

alleviated my financial stress and gave me the time to focus on my education.”

In 2007, Julia’s confidence grew while participating on the BCIT Marketing Association’s team, which represented Canada in the prestigious American Marketing Association Collegiate Conference finals in New Orleans. The team placed second for its innovative plan to revitalize tourism in New Orleans.

Later that year, Julia was elected President of the BCIT Association of Integrated Marketers. Now a graduate and working full-time at Quay Strategies Inc., a strategic public relations firm, Julia is modest about her achievements but speaks passionately of her BCIT experience.

“The healthy competition at BCIT challenged us to think outside the box to change people’s perceptions.”

Best of all, Julia is inspired to give back to BCIT and to the community, thanks in large part to the great example of our donors.

“When we make an endowment grant, we’re investing in a resource for the community.”

Tim Pringle, Executive Director, Real Estate Foundation of BC

Page 7: 2007/08 Report on Giving

BCIT is honoured to receive a half-million dollar gift from the Real Estate Foundation of British Columbia to create the Real Estate Foundation of BC Endowment for the Adoption of Green Value Strategies in Development – the Institute’s first applied research fund.

This generous contribution will be the leadership gift to establish a larger group of pooled endowments supporting sustainable development, environmental stewardship research, and applied learning activities within the School of Construction and the Environment.

“When we make an endowment grant, we’re investing in a resource for the community,” says Tim Pringle, Executive Director for the Real Estate Foundation of BC. “In this case we’re providing practitioners with access to resources in the form of research, education, and technical advice.”

When asked why partnering with BCIT was a good fit, Tim attributed it to the common values shared between the two organizations, BCIT’s unique focus on green value implementation, and the capacity it has to really influence the work that practitioners do.

This gift anchors the research endowment that the School of Construction and the Environment is building for research in sustainability as it pertains to the natural environment, the built environment and the relationship between them. With matching funds provided by the School of Construction and the Environment, the total endowment balance will be $750,000 – the largest endowment in BCIT’s history.

“We are truly thankful to the Real Estate Foundation for its gift and leadership in this area,” says Wayne Hand, Acting Dean for the School of Construction and the Environment. “It will prepare new graduates to meet the challenges they will encounter in a rapidly changing work environment; one that is increasingly focused on a triple bottom line of performance that delivers economic and social prosperity while protecting the natural environment.”

This year, the Real Estate Foundation is celebrating 20 years of grant making. From 1988 – 2007, the Foundation approved over $48 million in grants in 122 BC communities.

“Graduates from the General Insurance and Risk Management program will immediately add value to the industry on a national level.”

Jim Ball, President, Reliance Insurance Agencies Ltd.

Page 9: 2007/08 Report on Giving

British Columbia’s only Diploma in General Insurance and Risk Management, is scheduled to begin in September 2008 at BCIT.

This two-year, full-time School of Business program will address the demand for highly-trained professionals to work in the province’s $6 billion property and casualty insurance business. As the industry is poised to grow, it is facing a large exodus of senior employees heading into retirement.

“Industry support has been tremendous,” says Tim Edwards, BCIT’s Associate Dean of Financial Management. “I would like

to recognize the efforts of the general insurance industry leaders who partnered with BCIT to make this program a reality.”

Those who receive a formal education in this specialized area can expect to access a variety of lucrative and rewarding careers in the insurance industry, which includes health, disability, casualty, property and life insurance.

“Graduates from the BCIT General Insurance and Risk Management program will immediately add value to the industry on a national level and ensure its ability to keep up with growth,” says Jim Ball, fundraising Campaign Chair and President of Reliance Insurance Agencies Ltd.

The School will continue to seek guidance from various companies and leaders in general insurance to ensure the program stays current as the industry changes.

“Every part of a BCIT course is relevant and specific to the workplace, meaning graduates immediately add value to the company when they join.”

Peter Hrdlitschka, President, Ledcor Canadian Building Group pictured with Jim Logan, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Ledcor Group of Companies

Page 11: 2007/08 Report on Giving

When Ledcor Industries donated $2 million to 10 Canadian and American institutions offering education in applied trades and technologies, BCIT was grateful to receive $500,000, one of the largest of these gifts.

Ledcor Executive Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer Jim Logan is a BCIT graduate who served on BCIT’s Board of Governors. His past experience as a student and governor gave Jim the confidence that BCIT was able to provide high-quality educational opportunities to skilled professionals.

The gift is divided into several components that are consistent with Ledcor’s objectives of increasing the number of people entering construction and related fields, and ensuring graduates are trained to meet the company’s client needs, especially in the areas of sustainable development and construction management.

The gift also includes the establishment of five annual awards funded by the new Ledcor 60th Anniversary Endowment for high achieving students in the School of Construction and the Environment and the School of Business.

“Ledcor has demonstrated true leadership and vision for the future of the construction sector through these investments in education. The gift will greatly facilitate the development and integration of the latest technology and industry best practices into the curriculum of our programs” says Wayne Hand, acting Dean, BCIT’s School of Construction and the Environment.

President of Ledcor’s Canadian Building Group and BCIT graduate, Peter Hrdlitschka, said that the company’s long-term investment in the Institute is particularly meaningful, as in Vancouver 35% of the company’s salaried staff, and 75% of its senior management are BCIT graduates. “Every part of a BCIT course is relevant and specific to the workplace, meaning graduates immediately add value to the company when they join,” he says.

“BCIT’s Mark Angelo is a talented scientist, educator and advocate for his field.”

Rudy North, President and Founder, North Growth Management Ltd.

Page 13: 2007/08 Report on Giving

Although he chose a career in financial management over one in fisheries, Rudy North of North Growth Management Ltd. has dedicated time and financial resources to protecting endangered fish stocks and their environments. Since 2005, Rudy has been influential in supporting a BCIT project to preserve the Heart of the Fraser, a stretch of the Fraser River which is BC’s largest and most ecologically diverse waterway.

The Heart of the Fraser and its rich ecosystem, which lies between Mission and Hope, is increasingly at risk from the growing pressures of urbanization, agricultural expansion, resource extraction and land development.

When he became aware of the growing threat to the Heart of the Fraser, Rudy sought a collaboration with organizations like the Nature Trust of British Columbia and the Fraser River Sturgeon Conservation Society, to safeguard the waterway. Through them, he was introduced to Mark Angelo, Head of BCIT’s Fish, Wildlife and Recreation program, and the project took off.

The Heart of the Fraser Initiative aims to bring people together from political, corporate and public interests to restore and protect what’s left of these aquatic habitats and landscapes for future generations.

Rudy’s support of BCIT is a direct result of his high regard for Mark Angelo, recipient of the Order of Canada and the Order of British Columbia and recognized as a world conservation leader by the United Nations. “No one gets more done with a donation than Mark,” says Rudy. “He is a talented scientist, educator and advocate for his field.”

Mark is equally complimentary about Rudy. “Rudy is both enthusiastic and knowledgable about the Heart of the Fraser Initiative. Through his tremendous support we have made significant steps forward to protect this unique river environment.”

For more information on the Heart of the Fraser Initiative visit the campaign’s interactive website, Explore the Fraser at www.explorethefraser.bcit.ca.

“Not having to worry about lunch money or the price of textbooks was a great relief, allowing me to focus my energy on course work. Thanks to BCIT and award donors, I am now well-prepared and confident in my abilities.”

Jessica Holman, 2008 Civil Engineering Technology graduate, recipient of several awards and bursaries, including the 2008 Sandwell Engineering Award

Page 15: 2007/08 Report on Giving

BCIT extends a warm appreciation to Sandwell Engineering for its outstanding commitment to supporting one of the Institute’s longest continuing annual awards. Since 1965, the Colonel W. G. Swan Award has been presented to a top BCIT Civil Engineering Technology graduate in the School of Construction and the Environment.

The Award was named after Colonel William George Swan, founder of Swan Wooster Engineering Company Ltd., and the first President of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC. In 1986, Sandwell Engineering acquired Swan Wooster, and the award’s legacy continued through Sandwell.

According to Gordon Zonailo, a vice president at Sandwell, Swan Wooster saw BCIT as an up-and-coming post-secondary institute that would produce graduates with the ability to work successfully in the engineering and construction industries. In addition to providing a lasting tribute to Colonel Swan, the Award also serves as a recruitment tool by raising the company’s profile among the best BCIT students.

A BCIT graduate and award recipient himself, Gordon’s relationship with BCIT continued when he served on the Civil Engineering Technology program’s advisory committee for 15 years, and later, when he presented the Colonel Swan Award to graduating students on behalf of the company.

“Sandwell’s remarkable commitment to the Institute is reflective of our ability to build positive relationships with key industry members and our alumni so that the shared community benefits are sustained for years to come,” said Laurie Clarke, Vice President Development and Executive Director, BCIT Foundation and Alumni Association. “BCIT is very proud to acknowledge Sandwell’s contributions.”

Sandwell is a leading engineering, procurement, and construction services company in transportation, power, petroleum, industrial process, manufacturing and general building.

“I believe in what BCIT does and stands for ...”

Dr. John Blatherwick, former Chief Medical Officer, Vancouver Coastal Health Authority

Page 17: 2007/08 Report on Giving

He established municipal smoking by-laws, cleaned up Vancouver’s drinking water, launched public education campaigns and introduced new immunization programs for adults and children. During his 36 years as Chief Medical Officer for the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, Dr. John Blatherwick was a passionate advocate in the health field.

It was no surprise that when John retired in 2007 with a collection of accolades, including the Order of Canada and the Order of British Columbia, his colleagues wanted to recognize his career by setting up an endowment in his honour.

“John was our boss and inspirational leader,” says Dr. Brian O’Connor, a Medical Health Officer on the North Shore. “He was a great role model and mentor and we wanted to acknowledge his contribution to the field.”

The Dr. John Blatherwick Endowment in Environmental Health provides financial support and recognition to students entering BCIT’s Environmental Health program – the only one of its kind in the province. It is a fitting tribute to John’s passion for environmental health and his desire to support education in this area.

“I believe in what BCIT does and stands for, and appreciate the excellent people who work as environmental health officers in BC,” says John, who served as chair of the BCIT Environmental Health program’s advisory committee.

“We want to see students benefit from the educational experience and the positive impact it can have on their lives.”

Sentheepan Senthivel, Owner, Kanata Sales and Marketing Inc.

Page 19: 2007/08 Report on Giving

Sentheepan Senthivel only graduated from BCIT in 2006, but he has already joined the ranks of alumni striving to ensure opportunities for future students.

Prior to enrolling at BCIT, Sentheepan served as a Child Care Counselor for the Ministry of Children and Families. After taking a year to work overseas for the Canadian Vietnam Business Association, he discovered his passion in the School of Business’ Marketing Management program.

Just before his second year started, Sentheepan did not have the funds to pay for his tuition. He was saved just in time by receiving The NAI Goddard and Smith Award in Commercial Real Estate and The Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver – George Nelson Muir Memorial Scholarship, totalling $1,500.

Later in his second year, additional funding from The Building Owners and Managers Association of BC, Gerry Thomson Memorial Bursary enabled Sentheepan to complete his education in the Commercial Real Estate option.

Eager to put his business skills to work, Sentheepan focused on growing his

company, Kanata Sales and Marketing Inc., which was launched while he was a student. The company distributes organic and natural foods to grocery stores.

Today, Sentheepan seeks to give other individuals an opportunity to follow in his footsteps.

“I was influenced by my Entrepreneurship and Sales instructors, so my friend from BCIT, Shao Chen and I created the Senthivel and Chen Achievement Award to recognize the first year achievements of students in these programs,” explains Sentheepan. “Both Shao and I love BCIT. We want to see students benefit from the educational experience and the positive impact it can have on their lives.”

As a BCIT donor and alumnus, Sentheepan is helping students reach their goals. It is his way of saying thank you to all his instructors, especially Sandi Dunlop, for giving him the most valuable business skills he has, especially his ability to sell.

“I am grateful and honoured for this extraordinary recognition from members of the Business Council on my retirement.”

Jerry Lampert, former President and CEO, Business Council of British Columbia

Page 21: 2007/08 Report on Giving

Jerry Lampert, former President and CEO of the Business Council of British Columbia, understands BCIT’s important role in supplying the economy with highly skilled graduates. As Chair of the BCIT Aerospace Technology Campus Capital Campaign Cabinet, Jerry was directly involved in raising $10 million for the new Campus, enabling BCIT to more than double the number of aerospace graduates by 2010.

When Jerry announced he would retire at the end of 2007, the Business Council knew it was losing a key asset and great friend. In recognition of his 15 years of dedicated service, its members established the Jerry Lampert Library Endowment at the Aerospace Technology Campus.

“I am grateful and honoured for this extraordinary recognition from members of the Business Council on my retirement,” states Jerry, “The endowment will benefit current and future BCIT Aerospace Technology students as they prepare to contribute to our province and country.”

BCIT was delighted to be chosen as the beneficiary of this special tribute. With the support of Jerry’s business associates and friends at the Council, the endowment grew to over $170,000 with 50 gifts from all sectors of the business community, including energy, tourism, mining, forestry, and transportation.

The Jerry Lampert Library Endowment will provide the library with ongoing funding to keep up with advancing technology, student requirements and special collections enhancements.

“This endowment will further ensure the library’s sustainability well into the future,” says David Pepper, Director of Library Services at BCIT. “The entire BCIT community will continue to benefit from Jerry’s leadership and the generosity of the Business Council of British Columbia’s members.”

“What I like about BCIT is that it takes a very pragmatic, hands-on approach when it comes to teaching with new tools and technology.”

Roy Trivett, CEO, Visiphor

Page 23: 2007/08 Report on Giving

While “Forensics” has been made popular by television programs like CSI, in reality the field is more complex than it seems. BCIT trains forensic analysts, technologists, and scientists in the areas of computing, economics, business and science to detect, collect, evaluate, and prepare evidence for use in courts of law.

BCIT’s Crime and Intelligence Analysis program recently received significant support from Visiphor, a local Vancouver-based software company, in the form of a software donation valued at $775,000, for use in the Crime and Intelligence Analysis Program.

“Visiphor software will be used at BCIT to train a new generation of crime and intelligence practitioners, and will serve to raise the bar of analytic performance

across Canada,” says Alex Tyakoff, Program Coordinator for the Crime and Intelligence Analysis program. “We are thrilled to have a Vancouver-based company support cutting-edge training at BCIT.”

The Visiphor Briyante Integration Environment™ software allows data to be accessed, consolidated, and analysed from a variety of information sources in real-time, while their Advanced Facial Recognition™ software can match photographs or artist sketches to images in a data bank. These applications are integral to enhancing British Columbia’s law enforcement system.

Visiphor’s team will work in partnership with BCIT to prepare the course content and integrate the software into the curriculum.

When asked why BCIT was chosen for this one-of-a-kind donation, Visiphor CEO, Roy Trivett said, “What I like about BCIT is that it takes a very pragmatic, hands-on approach when it comes to teaching with new tools and technology. This allows us to properly position our state-of-the-art technology for use by law enforcement, thus making our communities safer places.”

“We are pleased to participate in the Distinguished Alumni Awards, which provides a great opportunity to raise awareness of our unique relationship with BCIT, and generate interest in the products and services we offer to Alumni.”

Michael Burns, President, Wellington West Clearsight

Page 25: 2007/08 Report on Giving

At last year’s fifth annual BCIT Distinguished Alumni Awards (DAA), CTV sportscaster and emcee, Perry Solkowski, noted that the winners could plan it, build it, sail it, write about it and likely sell it abroad – no small feat for five very talented individuals.

Perry accurately articulated why the DAA, which honours BCIT alumni who have distinguished themselves in their careers and community endeavours, has become a well-recognized, high profile gala ceremony.

Five leadership awards were presented over the course of the evening before an audience of more than 400 alumni and friends at the Four Seasons Hotel. Each winner’s achievements were thoughtfully highlighted in prepared video presentations.

This incredible ability to showcase the outstanding leadership of our graduates is made possible thanks to the generosity of twenty seven sponsors, who contributed cash or in-kind gifts and services. The Alumni Association is particularly grateful to the event’s lead Diamond Sponsor ($10,000), Wellington West Clearsight, an investment company that has been a major sponsor since 2004, and presenting sponsor since 2006.

Wellington West Clearsight was originally introduced to the Alumni Association in 2004, as an affinity partner. In light of the positive partnership, the company was “pleased to participate in the DAA, which provides a great opportunity to raise awareness of our unique relationship with BCIT, and generate interest in the products and services we offer to Alumni” said President Michael Burns.

“Beyond receiving publicity and networking benefits, sponsors are instrumental in facilitating BCIT’s mandate of connecting industry with the BCIT community and our students,” says Adam Pion, President of the BCIT Alumni Association. “We are especially grateful to all BCIT event sponsors for their support.”

BCIT’s School of Manufacturing, Electronics and Industrial Processes has received $8.6 million from the Provincial Government of BC for a new state of the art boiler facility. Once installed, the facility will enable BCIT to provide specialized training for students preparing to work in the fast growing oil and gas industries as well as in major commercial complexes.

“Designed to meet the latest safety and environmental standards, the system will advance research into reducing harmful emissions and enable training on new environmental technologies” says Trevor Williams, Dean of the School of Manufacturing, Electronics and Industrial Processes.

Industry involvement is essential to the development of the new boiler facility. In addition to being invited to participate in its design and construction, industry partners will also help promote BCIT as the province’s premier training facility for both current workers and prospective students.

With the increased demand for skilled workers in the oil and gas industries and other areas, it is essential for BCIT to provide training on the most current boiler systems that have the lowest possible emissions. The facility is scheduled for completion in late 2009 with BCIT needing to raise additional funds towards the overall project cost.
