President’s messageWelcome to the 2008-09 year with uCsC Women’s Club! We’re off

to a great start with our wonderful board members who’ve been working throughout the summer to make plans for our 43rd year . Our 1st Vice President, Bonita sebastian, has been organizing an exciting group of speakers for our monthly meetings, including Bruce Margon, uCsC Vice-Chancellor of Research, whose own research focuses on high-energy astro-physics, and who’s been involved with the hubble space telescope project for over 25 years .

We’re fortunate to have the Arboretum as the location for most of our monthly meetings . the board will kick off the year by providing a light lun-cheon at the Fall Gathering, where you’ll hear about the year’s plans as well as the range of opportunities our interest groups provide . In a departure from our recent refreshment arrangements, beginning in november, our monthly meetings will include drinks and dessert only . In december we’ll join the other university friends groups for a holiday party, and our spring luncheon will highlight our scholarship recipients .

For many years Liz evanovich has served the uCsC Women’s Club as staff Liaison between the Women’s Club and the university . Recently the

university began transitioning the way it supports its friends groups, and Liz will move to the role of member-at-large on the Women’s Club board . the board continues to work closely with the university . We thank Liz for her devoted service to our club, particularly to the board . she’s gone above and beyond the call of duty to assist us, and we are greatly appreciative .

A particular goal of our club is to provide scholarships for uCsC re-entry students . this past spring we awarded $12,000 in scholarship money to twelve deserving students . We plan to increase our scholarship awards this coming spring . Last year we were very successful in our fund-raising, gathering nearly $17,000 . noteworthy was last year’s first annual santa Cruz Chocolate Festival, so highly successful that our second annual santa Cruz Chocolate Festival is planned for sunday, February 8, 2009, at the Cocoanut Grove, a much larger venue than last year . thanks to your contributions of all kinds, the Rita Olsen Pister endowment has reached $125,000! Please continue to contribute to this worthy cause .

Please enjoy our fall newsletter to keep current with our club activities, and feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns at sal@ucsc .edu or 831-459-2552 .

Desserts and DrinksIn recent years our club members have provided a light luncheon at our monthly meetings . As our club has grown, arranging the luncheon for a large group has become a greater challenge . the board decided that, beginning with our november general meeting, club members will provide dessert . the board will continue to provide drinks .

You’re welcome to bring your lunch with you and enjoy the yummy des-serts . We’re now asking members to bring desserts, so please sign up at our next meeting to share your favorite cookies, pies, and cakes!

Food Helpers Wanted!Food Coordinator Roberta Bromberger is hoping you’ll volun-teer to help her with coordinating our new dessert-only menu . this is your chance to work with a wonder-ful group of women and have fun in the process! Volunteers may circu-late sign-ups for general meetings, remind members of their sign-ups, receive and arrange the set-up of drinks and desserts, and/or help with cleanup . For more information, con-tact Roberta Bromberger, bobby@paradiseav .com, or sally Lester, 831-459-2552 or [email protected] .

Setting the Pace in the Human Race

Did You Buy Your Women’s Club T-Shirt?If you didn’t get your t-shirt yet, you can buy one on October 1 at our Fall Gathering . Women’s Club t-shirts will be on sale for $8 each .

More than twenty women partici-pated in the 2008 human Race

on May 10 on behalf of the Women’s Club, raising nearly $2,000 for student scholarships . Most Women’s Club par-ticipants walked the 10K course from natural Bridges, along West Cliff and back . however, a few ran the course with determination and speed . We kept good company with one another, and at least three spouses and one dog

rounded out the mix . We were treated to a continental breakfast before the race, snacks and drinks at the halfway point, and a barbeque lunch afterward .

the Women’s Club was one of nearly 130 nonprofits that participated . More than $220,000 was raised by approxi-mately 3,000 individual fundraisers . It was the most profitable race yet according to the Volunteer Centers of santa Cruz who organized the race .

Fundraising Update – We’re making a Difference!

We made great strides for our students last year by raising almost $17,000 for our re-entry scholarship program in 2007-08 . this coming year we’ll contin-

ue our efforts to make a difference for students who really do appreciate what we do to support their educational pursuits . Mark your calendar for these tasty occasions:

Community night at shadowbrook Restaurant takes place on tuesday, december 9, 2008 . Come dine with family and friends—the more the merrier! One-third of all food and beverage sales will go to our scholarship program .

Our second annual santa Cruz Chocolate Festival is set for sunday, February 8, 2009, from 2 to 5 pm at the Cocoanut Grove Ballroom . If you are interested in being part of the organizing team for this event, please contact Lorraine Margon at [email protected] .

On saturday, May 9, at 8 am is human Race 2009 at natural Bridges state Park .

In memoriamWith much sadness we acknowledge the passing of two dear club members, Beverly Levine and harriett Cramer . Beverly was an accomplished profes-sional with a broad range of interests, including travel, agriculture, writing, and music . she traveled the world, helped write and edit a book of World War II memories, and most recently was a member of Fiat Musica . she was known for her witty nature and her kindness to young people .

harriett will be remembered as an avid bridge player and a wonderful storyteller—she always had a twinkle in her eye as she told a story! harriett and her husband were very involved in the local chapter of Mended hearts, a cardiac support group offering help, support, and encouragement to heart disease patients and their families .

Our hearts go out to their families—we will miss these two wonderful women .
