Since 1977, the Metropolitan Community College (MCC) Foundation, an independent 501(c)3 corporation, has worked to advance MCC’s comprehensive mission by creating community awareness, building andnurturing meaningful relationships and connecting the College with resources to promote student opportunities and program growth.

Led by a volunteer Board of Directors, the Foundation helps MCC students, faculty and staff achieve their goals—through educational programs, student emergency support, facility enhancement and scholarships. The Board of Directors is comprised of 18 community leaders representing a broad cross-section of the College’s four-county service area of Dodge, Douglas, Sarpy and Washington counties.

Metropolitan Community College was established in 1974 and is a comprehensive, public community college that offers affordable, accessible, quality education to residents living in and around Omaha.MCC has the largest and most diverse enrollment of the six community colleges in Nebraska and is thesecond largest postsecondary institution in the state. MCC offers more than 100 career programs in business administration, computer and construction technologies, nursing and allied health, social sciences and services and visual and electronic technologies. In the past academic year, the College served almost 71,000 credit and noncredit students at its three main campuses, four satellite centersand through its growing online campus enrollment.

MCC has built a solid reputation for responding to community needs and providing flexible education opportunities through multiple delivery models and convenient locations for students of all ages, interests and backgrounds. Wrap-around and developmental education programs, such as English language learner, GED and refresher courses, are available for students to ensure the best possibility of academic success.

The MCC Foundation offers creative options for donors to fund areas of need at the College. These areas include student scholarships, program/department funds, equipment/technology funds, building/facility funds, discretionary funds and unrestricted funds.

“I whole-heartedly support the mission of the Foundation at Metro. I believe that I have received many benefits from working for MCC, and therefore, I need to give back to MCC. One way I do this is by giving to the Foundation for scholarships and for the TRIO program. Education is so vital to success, and I feel that my donations are helping, in a small way, to make success a possibility for students.”

The members of the MCC Foundation Board consider it a great privilege to support the good work done at Metropolitan Community College, a vital contributor to the economic health of our region.

There is no question that the 2009-10 fiscal year brought economic hardship to many people in the MCC four-county area. Unemployment was on the rise, salaries were frozen, furloughs were mandated. as has been the case in past economic downturns, when times get tough, the smart get going—to Metropolitan Community College. almost 71,000 individuals took advantage of MCC’s academic and continuing education offerings to address their career and lifelong learning needs.

at the MCC Foundation, the words, “your Gift . . .Their Future . . . Our Promise” are not just a tagline to put on mugs and pens. They are a pledge of partnership. When you offer your support to MCC students, faculty and staff, you are investing in our students’ potential. and when you help people improve their lives through education, you are creating the promise of our collective future. you can trust that your gifts will be put to the highest and best use. That is our promise to you.

We are ever grateful for you, our partners, and we look forward with you to the continued growth and success of Metropolitan Community College and the community it serves.

Sincerely,

LaRRy JOhNSONMCCF PRESIDENT

your gift...their future...our promise -4-

The exploding enrollment rates at community colleges nationwide have been big news this past year, and the impact has surely been felt at Metropolitan Community College. Increases have been in the double-digits; career programs are expanding, and workforce training demands are on the increase. More and more students are choosing to start their path of higher education here and using their MCC degrees as a foundation for the future.

So, it is no surprise that the College is looking strategically to the future as well. During this past year, MCC embarked on an inclusive andenlightening process engaging the community to help shape what MCC will look like and brainstorm how to address community needs. This resulted in an updated Master Plan for Campuses and Centers. Students, business owners and community members from across our service area provided input and their unique perspectives on thisimportant plan. Together, they set your community college on a path of continued growth, responsiveness and flexible educational offerings.

In the coming months, we look forward to sharing this Master Plan with you, our community supporters. Together, we will work toward the positive change that comes from investments in education—education that takes place right where the community lives and grows.

We remain grateful for the support you have given us this past year and thank you for the difference you have helped us make. Education truly changes lives—and communities—for the better.

Sincerely,

RaNDy SChMaILZLMCC PRESIDENT

WaYs to support our students

your gift...their future...our promise -5-

at the MCC Foundation, we believe that education has the power to change lives for the better. If you share our view, we invite you to make a positive impact through your financial support. your gift can make adifference by supporting:

• Scholarships for tuition, books, program supplies, tools and fees

For about the cost of one class at a four-year college or university, you can support a full quarter of learning at MCC. • Student success initiatives

Students with associate degrees earn about $7,000 more per year than those with only high school diplomas. By supporting MCC’s student success initiatives, you will help more students complete degrees and strengthen our region’s economic base in the process.

• Program/department growth funds

Staying workforce relevant requires constant upgrades in technology and instructional techniques. your support helps our instructors stay current and ensures our students graduate ready to make a difference on the job.

• Building and facilities enhancements

help MCC address double-digit enrollment growth and expanding community needs through your gift to support capital improvements.

The Metropolitan Community College Foundation offers many options for those who wish to make a gift through financial gifts of cash, securities, stock, personal property, life insurance or a bequest. In-kind gifts of goods and services are also a unique way you provide resources to the College to help leverage support for fundraising or instructional activities.

Gifts may be designated for a currently established fund, or donors may create a new endowment fund for a pledge of $5,000 or more, which may be paid over a period of five years. visit our Ways to Give (www.mccneb.edu/waystogive) page on the Metropolitan Community College Foundation website orcontact the MCC Foundation at (402) 457-2346 for more information.

“I have returned to college after 20 years as a working mother. I have worked very hard to do my school work, keep my grades up and continue to work a full-time job. The investment you are making is not just about me but also changing the lives of my children. I will be the first college graduate in my immediate family, and both of my children are now college bound.”

Metropolitan Community College is the largest provider of adult education services in Nebraska. With the help of more than 100 volunteer tutors, more than 4,500 students improved skills in English, reading, math, financial literacy, technology and work readiness through MCC’s adult Education andEnglish-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) classes during the2009-10 academic year. MCC offers these classes at 21 locations across our four-county service area, partnering with schools, community-based agencies, faith-based organizations, nonprofits and businesses.

More than 47,000 residents over the age of 25 in Douglas and Sarpy counties do not have high school diplomas, so it is not surprising that MCC’s adult Education enrollment has increased nearly 50 percent in the last four years. Stay tuned as MCC continues to meet those community needs for adult learners by providing quality and accessible courses in community locations and as we look for new and innovative ways to bring those services to our neighbors who most need them.

“The GED program is a second chance for me, since when I was younger I was messed up. I now have the chance to really give it my all and accomplish what I want in life. This is a first step to achieve my goals like going to college, meeting my financial obligations and having a better job so I can provide for my family. Without this program, I wouldn’t have been able to change my life.”

A. Hoffman

Page 9: 2009 - 2010 - Metropolitan Community College

Complementing the community-based locations where MCC offers adult Education classes, MCC also operates an open-access, self-paced literacy classroom at the South Omaha Campus. Designed to address growing demand and the need for flexible offerings, these individualized classrooms allow students to receive instruction regardless of their literacy level by combining computerized listening, writing, speaking and reading skills training with one-on-one and small group instructional experiences. Due to the increased hours, students can participate and the individualized approach, MCC’s self-paced classroom has been highly successful in

accelerating students’ English language acquisition. Contributing to that success is the fact that literacy instruction is paired with vocational and work skills instruction to better prepare individuals for workforce success. The self-paced lab has been operating at capacity, pointing to a need for additional self-paced labs with expanded service hours.

With the help of community partners, like the William and Ruth Scott Foundation, MCC is able to maintain and expand these important educational opportunities for our community.

“The William and Ruth Scott Foundation continues to support English-as-a Second-Language programs at MCC because we believe the College offers the bestlocal entry-level courses to the community. as new members join our community, many are already facing challenges to find housing and employment and learning English is another barrier to overcome. The importance of communicating should not be taken for granted—learning basic language fundamentals helps us become self-sustainable as we learn how to advocate for ourselves and our families. MCC classes do just that by providing accessible and community-based class locations. The classes help our community members establish relationships that help them in the future, advance in employment opportunities and make a better life for themselves.”

“This may be cliché, but there are truly no words to express how grateful I am right now. I know trust and faith are hard concepts for people to grasp these days but please continue to trust and have faith that myself, my family and society as a whole will benefit from this gift. This is the beginning of a ripple effect in my life and my community that is greatly appreciated.”

“Giving to scholarships and the campaign truly is an investment in the future, our community and education.”

Dan Bartek MCC Academic Advisor

“This scholarship is a gift that will grow in value even after this school year is over because it will help me make a greater impact on the future of our society and even our world. I may start an interior design business, sign on to a firm or start a family, but no matter what my future holds, your gift will play a huge part in my success.”

“I feel very fortunate to have been selected from among those that applied for the MCC Foundation General Scholarship. This scholarship will be very helpful to me in continuing my education. The challenges of getting an education are outweighed by the knowledge that people like you care about me.”

Amanda Crim

“as a graduate of Metro Community College, it is extremely easy for me to help support the College Foundation and the necessary work it performs. I consider this assistance to be one of the most direct and lasting investments one can make in the local community. In the final analysis, the College helps people improve themselves and others through a culture of education and encouragement. how can you not support that?”
