2009 CIEA Annual report For UK Royal Aero Club There is a diverse range of organisations in the UK working to promote youth involvement in aviation. An important development this year has been the increased communication and working together of many of these, to further their common interest. A series of conference and "awareness days" have taken place with attendees from the LAA (Light Aircraft Association), RAeS (Royal Aeronautical Society), BMFA British Model Flying Association), BGA (British Gliding Association), Scouts, Air Cadets, aerospace business and museums, and individual supporters. A collaborative website has also been set up to share resources and ideas between like-minded organisations. There is an equally diverse range of bursaries and grants. Some of those include: The Air Cadet Organisation, The Air League, The Armstrong Issacs bursary, awarded by the LAA, The British Women Pilot's Association, The Guild of Air Pilots and Navigators, The Glen Stewart Flying Scholarships, Fly2Help, The Royal Aero Club Trust and the DeHaviland Educational Trust. The recently formed LAA Educational Trust has now completed its first series of training workshops for aircraft homebuilders and the selection process for the annual Armstrong Isaacs flying bursary is underway. LAA Youth and Education Support (YES), have been active in raising awareness, taking the two Build-a- Planes and the electronic interactive display to a number of events throughout the year, including a presence at Farnborough and RIAT (Royal International Air Tattoo), as well as SPLASH (Sport And Light Aviation Show). Young Aviator events and Scout camps have increased in number and a representative from the Scouts reported back to the YES AGM that achievement of aviation-related badges (including Navigation, Aeronautics and Meteorology) had increased by 30%. The Scout Organisation has also collaborated with other organisations sharing their well established good practice and knowledge on issues of child protection, organisation of events, and funding sources. Airfield Schools Days and Enterprise events have also taken place, and volunteers from YES are starting to compile and develop supporting lesson materials for teachers once they return to the classroom. The Build-A-Plane project has also had an eventful and successful year, with the first aircraft, The Spirit of Brooklands attending many events both flying and as a static display. The second aircraft, The Spirit of Devon Youth is nearing completion and expected to make its first test flights within weeks. Support has now been confirmed for further Build-a-Plane projects through generous sponsorship from the RAeS and Boeing. These will be run as the "Schools Challenge" in conjunction with support from local RAeS Branches and LAA Struts. Bids are in from interested schools and the chosen lead school for the project will be announced this month. The aim is to include 'Enterprise skills' as a major aspect and ultimately 2000 or more pupils will be involved in the project. The gliding world continues to offer a relatively low cost entry into aviation for young people and many individual clubs, such as Lasham offer a well established youth programme of discounted flying, and events. The BGA is in the process of reorganising and updating its own educational materials.

2009 CIEA Annual report For UK

Royal Aero Club

There is a diverse range of organisations in the UK working to promote youth involvement in aviation. An important development this year has been the increased communication and working together of many of

these, to further their common interest. A series of conference and "awareness days" have taken place with

attendees from the LAA (Light Aircraft Association), RAeS (Royal Aeronautical Society), BMFA British Model Flying Association), BGA (British Gliding Association), Scouts, Air Cadets, aerospace business and museums,

and individual supporters. A collaborative website has also been set up to share resources and ideas between like-minded organisations.

There is an equally diverse range of bursaries and grants. Some of those include: The Air Cadet Organisation, The Air League, The Armstrong Issacs bursary, awarded by the LAA, The British Women Pilot's

Association, The Guild of Air Pilots and Navigators, The Glen Stewart Flying Scholarships, Fly2Help, The

Royal Aero Club Trust and the DeHaviland Educational Trust.

The recently formed LAA Educational Trust has now completed its first series of training workshops for

aircraft homebuilders and the selection process for the annual Armstrong Isaacs flying bursary is underway.

LAA Youth and Education Support (YES), have been active in raising awareness, taking the two Build-a-

Planes and the electronic interactive display to a number of events throughout the year, including a

presence at Farnborough and RIAT (Royal International Air Tattoo), as well as SPLASH (Sport And Light Aviation Show).

Young Aviator events and Scout camps have increased in number and a representative from the Scouts reported back to the YES AGM that achievement of aviation-related badges (including Navigation,

Aeronautics and Meteorology) had increased by 30%. The Scout Organisation has also collaborated with other organisations sharing their well established good practice and knowledge on issues of child protection,

organisation of events, and funding sources.

The second aircraft, The Spirit of

Devon Youth is nearing completion and expected to make its first test flights within weeks.

Support has now been confirmed for further Build-a-Plane projects through generous sponsorship from the RAeS and Boeing. These will be run as the "Schools Challenge" in conjunction with support from local RAeS

Branches and LAA Struts. Bids are in from interested schools and the chosen lead school for the project will be announced this month. The aim is to include 'Enterprise skills' as a major aspect and ultimately 2000 or

more pupils will be involved in the project.

The gliding world continues to offer a relatively low cost entry into aviation for young people and many

individual clubs, such as Lasham offer a well established youth programme of discounted flying, and events.

The BGA is in the process of reorganising and updating its own educational materials.

2.

With an even lower entry cost and thus larger potential access, the BMFA provide a wealth of materials for

education, ranging from teacher packs for the primary school classroom, through to university level competitions.

Many museums, small and large are developing hands on exhibits and detailed lesson resources mapped to National Curriculum. Volunteers from Brooklands, the Bristol Aero collection and FAST have also attended

the conferences and awareness days and shared their methods and ideas with other interested organisations

and individuals.

It has started to come to people's notice that there has been a marked decline in the number of UK students

taking up the STEM subjects, and several business and NGOs have started to address this. Companies such as Discovery4 offering careers advice to young people entering an aerospace career, Launchpad for

Learning, and the STEMNET advisory network offer advice and help to challenge the problem.

These organisations all recognise the "excitement factor" aviation has to inspire young people and support this important agenda.

REPORT of the Federation of Aeronautical Sports of Russia

on aerospace education activities for 2008 For the period under review the FAS of Russia management, guided by the FAI CIEA resolutions, has been doing its utmost to realize as efficiently as possible the advised by the CIEA ideas , aimed at disseminating aerospace knowledge among youth and children, taking into account national circumstances. We consider, that aerospace education activities do encourage the involvement of young people in air sports, also in studying the fundamentals of flying different types of aircraft and aircraft constructions. One of the effective aspects of these activities is the organization of annual young artists’ contests in various air sports subjects. These contests combine successfully the aesthetic education of young people and acquisition of important technical knowledge by them in highly technological areas of human activity: aviation and astronautics. The above mentioned is proved by numerous letters from the heads of children’s art schools from various regions of our country. After having selected 9 best works to be sent to the FAI for the Young Artists’ contest, the national contest for the other works is organized by the FAS of Russia. National contest participants ( authors of the best works ) are awarded with the FAS of Russia Diplomas, also Certificates of Appreciation are sent to the educational institutions, having taken part in the contest. Over 500 young artists, representing 70 various educational institutions from many regions of the Russian Federation had sent their paintings to the FAS of Russia for the FAI Young Artists Contest -2008 titled “ Create an Air Show Poster “. The “ Russian Bear-Cub” by Sviatoslav Putentsev, 8 years old boy from Ivanovo, has gained the " FAI Gold Medal " . The painting " From the Fairytale to the True Story " by Sonia Kriukova , 9 years old girl , also from Ivanovo and from the same art studio "Semitsvetik " ( their teacher is Mrs. R.Petrunina ) has gained the FAI Bronze Medal ". The above medals have been awarded by the FAS of Russia representatives to the winners in the town of their residence on the special occasion with the participation of the town authorities and mass media representatives. The best of the FAI Young Artists Contests' paintings of 2004 – 2007 were used for the exposition ( titled " Aviation and Air Sports by Children's Eyes" ) at the Moscow " MAX-2007" international air show. The visitors of all ages were greatly impressed by that exposition. The Rules of the FAI Young Artists' Contest-2009 titled " Create a Poster for the World Air Games " had been circulated in a due way and we started receiving paintings from the participants of this contest from different regions of Russia. A relatively new air sports discipline - Cyber Air Sports, based on using computers to imitate a flight by various types of aircraft, goes on being developed in our country by the FAS of Russia. Up-to-date simulators of various types of aircraft have been made. There is a cyber air sports club in Zhukovsky ( Moscow region ),which is functioning successfully. There goes on the process of selecting one of the Russian aviation museums to be proposed by the FAS of Russia for inclusion to the list of those recommended by the FAI . Information on the FAS of Russia activities in the field of aerospace education is covered on a regular basis by mass media, namely by magazine “ Aviation and Sports “ and All- Russian newspaper “Patriot “. FAI - Aviation and Space Education Report 2008 Switzerland

1. Youth membership

The total number of youth members could again be increased and we have therefore been able to reach the first time milestone of over 1000 youth members. The criteria for becoming a youth member is the participation in one of the 5 below mentioned programs and to be between 14 and 18 years of age.

The aim is to continously confront young people between the age of 14 to 18 with aviation. These youngsters receive the Association's magazine "AeroRevue" for free and this up to the age of 18. The AeroRevue appears 10 times a year. In addition, these young people are continuously served with aviation topics

2. The 5 National Youth Programmes

The following 5 youth programmes have been defined and successfully implemented throughout the different regions of Switzerland:

• JULA: The national youth camp • National Art Contest • National Youth Day • YES – Young Eagles of Switzerland • IACE - International Air Cadet Exchange

3. JULA: The national youth camp

In the year 2008, 180 aviation interested young people have been participating in the JULA. The youngsters were allowed to be part of the world of flying for one full week and this experience serves the purpose of awakening their fascination for all that concerns aviation in general. They are being introduced to theoretical and practical aspects through playful handcraft work, information on all aviation disciplines and an oversight given on aviation professions.

Page 15: 2009 CIEA Annual report For UK Royal Aero Club · 2009 CIEA Annual report For UK Royal Aero Club There is a diverse range of organisations in the UK working to promote youth involvement

4. National Art Contest

Gladly, we have been able to increase the number of participants at the National Art Contest by over 100. Thus, we have received a total of 573 drawings, compared to 452 drawings received in the year before.

For the launch of the National Art Contest we have increasedly used the Internet. Therefore the competition rules and regulations have not been sent to schools by post anymore, however, a small coloured flyer has been mailed to them (see below).

The full forms had to be downloaded from the Internet, which resulted in lowered

launch costs. This year we shall distribute an additional price to a selected teacher.

Winners of the 2008 Art Contest were invited to a price distribution ceremony on 30th August 2008, which was held on site at a local Air Show. The first prize winners of the different categories were rewarded with a scenic flight onboard a Pilatus Porter plane of the Swiss Airforce. In addition, the youngsters received several other gifts, as well as a specially designed Diploma.

5. 2nd

National Aviation Youth Day in Lucerne

Over 100 young people participated in the 2nd

National Youth Day, held in Lucerne in June 2008. This event enabled the kids to benefit from many presentations and exhibitions related to aviation and space education.

The number of participants has increased considerably in comparison to the year before. There are plans to hold a National Aviation Youth Day every year. In 2009 it will take place on 13th June 2009.

6. YES – Young Eagles of Switzerland

Every year, several hundred young people between the age of 12 to 18 take a YES flight, which is organised by regional Air Clubs. Youngsters between the age of 14 to 18 are registered as youth members after having taken their YES flight and thereafter, through their membership, continously confronted with aviation topics.

TURKISH AERONAUTICAL ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT – 2008

FAI CIEA Meeting, Lausanne 24-25 April, 2009

1. RAISING YOUNG AVIATORS TAA has launched an aggressive campaign to raise public awareness and understanding of aviation activities especially among children and youth in Turkey. A new aviation club, Hurkus (Freebird), was established for children aged between 8-11 to increase awareness across the country about aviation activities with the help and guidance from teenagers between the ages of 15-17.

Culture Minister Ertugrul GUNAY receives young aviators, Hurkuslar (freebirds)

Another club, Genckanatlar (Youngwings), was established for teenagers to attract volunteers aged between aged 16-29 who actively work in the organization of contests of poetry, painting and conferences with the theme of different branches of aviation. They aim for spreading information about TAA competitions and encourage spectators to attend the events as well as seek to find sponsors for aviation activities.

Page 19: 2009 CIEA Annual report For UK Royal Aero Club · 2009 CIEA Annual report For UK Royal Aero Club There is a diverse range of organisations in the UK working to promote youth involvement

- 2 -

TAA’s official magazine Ucanturk (FlyingTurk) has also began publishing an additional magazine called Ucancocuk (Flyingchild) which is distributed also free of charge since January 2008. It features caricatures and puzzles for children while providing basic information about aviation and encouraging the children to send their drawings for publishing. The magazine is also planning to distribute small gifts to children to increase its popularity. TAA has also organized dozens of tours for children and teenagers to its training facilities in line with demands from schools and local authorities, while having sportmen perform paragliding in public. TAA also organizes flights for public, enabling thousands of individuals to board a plane for the first time ever in their lives. This year, TAA teams will travel to four different regions in the country to perform air shows and fly around 3,000 people. At least 2,500 people have attended aviation conferences organized by TAA in six different cities.

2. REACHING PUBLIC THROUGH MEDIA TAA officials have attended programs as guests on 130 television channels and 11 radio stations throughout 2008.

TAA also helped produced a series of aviation program, called Ucanturk, in cooperation with the state-run television TRT. The program was aired twice on the state channel and was being distributed to local television channels across the country to reach wider audience. TAA has separately prepared television clips to be shown at fairs, conferences, festivals as well in public relations campaigns by teams dispatched to remote corners of the country who perform paragliding or ballooning to reach around 30,000 people.

Page 20: 2009 CIEA Annual report For UK Royal Aero Club · 2009 CIEA Annual report For UK Royal Aero Club There is a diverse range of organisations in the UK working to promote youth involvement

- 3 -

The most important public relations achievement in 2008 was convincing Beyazit Ozturk, the host, of the popular TV program, Beyaz Show, to appear on screen in a TAA uniform as he flew on a paramotor. The program with a 67 percent of rating led to a dramatic increase in applications to TAA aviation courses largely because 80 percent of its viewers are under the age of 27. TAA is planning to work with more popular role models in the same fashion.

Showman Beyazit Ozturk is surrounded by media members before a flight on a paramotor

3. TRAINING AND EDUCATION TAA has trained selected teachers in paragliding and aeromodelling and provided equipment and model planes free of charge. Those teachers are now authorized to conduct aviation courses in their branches even in remote corners of the country of more than 70 million people. With the help of those teachers, the number of teenagers trained by TAA has exceeded 23,000 teenagers in 2008. More than 43,000 teenagers are expected to receive basic training in 2009.

Page 21: 2009 CIEA Annual report For UK Royal Aero Club · 2009 CIEA Annual report For UK Royal Aero Club There is a diverse range of organisations in the UK working to promote youth involvement

- 4 -

Young Aeromodellers fly their first planes TAA has also used its official Web site to reach wider audience, encouraging children to make a paper plane with the help of an online video. The children are able to download the plan of the paper with a click from the TAA site, cut it with a scissor and fold it to produce the paper plane, following instructions in the video. A separate video shows how to fly the paper plane. Online education links: http://egitim.thk.org.tr/

TAA separately conducted a series of training of its own local officials who run 461 branches around the nation even in small townships. Each of them have been trained as a model plane teacher and are organizing courses while performing shows with remote controlled model planes. TAA provides model planes to those who attend the courses free of charge.

- 5 -

Young aeromodellers show their TAA aeromodelling certificates in eastern Turkey. TAA donated 20,000 kits of model planes to the Educational Ministry in 2008 for model plane courses. It is planning to donate 40,000 kits this year. TAA teachers and officials will serve as referees during country eliminations of Red Bull’s Paper Wings competition that will bring together competitors from 85 countries to race their paper planes. www.redbullpaperwings.com In 2008, TAA museum based in Ankara drew about 10,000 visitors. TAA’s policy of not asking for an entry fee either for the museum or for jumping from a parachuting tower within the garden of the museum has been key to attract them. FAI YOUNG ARTISTS CONTEST 2008 We received more than 5,700 paintings. The number of submissions showed continued interest in Turkey. The artwork of the winners were published as greeting cards to honour them and publicize the contest further. The winners were also awarded TAA medals and gifts. INTERNATIONAL AIR CADETS EXCHANGE (IACE) In 2008, Turkey hosted 23 cadets and four escorts from seven countries. The program was aimed at giving an insight of Turkey’s military and civilian aviation as well as the culture. The tour program included historical and touristic sites in Istanbul, Ankara, Eskişehir, Kuşadası and Efes.
