Abraham Lincoln Bicentennialmotorcycle pays tribute to 16th

President’s circuit riding days

A man who once split rails for a living is being honored with achopper of his own on his 200th birthday.

A Springfield businessman and the owner of a custom bodyshop have joined forces to create the “Circuit Rider,” a customHarley-Davidson motorcycle that honors the 16th President fromits copper-penny wheels to its split-rail tailpipes.

“I felt this was a unique way to honor America’s greatestpresident, a man who spent a lot of time in the saddle traversingthe back roads of Illinois during the mid 1800s,” said RichardLevi, President and CEO of Levi, Ray & Shoup, Inc., the manwho owns the motorcycle with the “ABE 200” Illinois licenseplates.

The “Circuit Rider” will be on display at Water and NorthStreet. Visitors are encouraged to have their photographs takenwith this unique, rolling work of art. The “Circuit Rider”features one-of-a-kind, custom copper plated wheels withLincoln penny designs and matching copper plating onnumerous small metal parts. The gas tank, rear fender, andbattery covers feature airbrushed Lincoln portraits anddepictions of Lincoln sites. The air cleaner is shaped likeLincoln’s stove pipe hat; the exhaust pipes look like woodenrails of the type Lincoln used to split, with an axe forming theshifter; and the foot pegs are copies of mid-1800s shackles, representing the issue of slavery. Black chrome adorns theengine cases and bolts.

The “Circuit Rider” project is officially endorsed by theIllinois Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission.

Scotty has devoted over 30 years to becoming a new age masterof the kalimba. He was trained in European classical music, butalways had an affinity for jazz, African, and Caribbean music.

Throughout his childhood, he listened to his father's extensivecollection of records from Africa and the Caribbean. He discoveredthe kalimba (or vice-versa) when he was 18 years old. When he was20, he met Ryphon Gray, who was building kalimbas from his owninnovative designs. Scotty became his apprentice, and they workedand performed together for two years. After that, Scotty continueddeveloping his instruments and music on his own.

In 1988, Scotty produced his first recording of solo kalimba music, "Kalimba Aquarius". In 1989, heformed The Earthmother's Majimba Band, which performed throughout the Midwest. He recordedseveral cassettes (including "First Earth Tour") and a CD , "Kalimba Dreams" with this band. In 1999, hereshaped the band into a jazz trio, named Majimba. "Soul of Majimba" was released in 2000.

Now he has come full circle with his first solo CD, "Kalimba A La Carte". Ranging from whimsical toethereal, this is his kalimba music in its purest form.

Scotty continues to perform at jazz venues, art and ethnic fairs, clubs, and schools. He also performsas part of a Caribbean-style strolling minstrel duet, with partner, Mak Dervo.

Scotty Hayward lives with his wife, Joan, and nine of their ten children in Iowa City, Iowa.
