Despite the overwhelming long-timesuccess of the Decatur Celebration, LoriSturgill, who just took over as director of theCelebration last year, figures there’s alwaysroom for improvement.

Sturgill and her staff have added severalnew aspects to this year’s upcoming streetfestival to enhance the experience ofcelebration-goers.

“I’m really excited about the energy andhow receptive the community has been tothese changes. I look forward to them goingover extremely well and us having greatweather,” Sturgill said.

Film Festival

One of thebiggest additionsto this year’scelebration is theLand of LincolnCredit Union 21 Film Project, which will takeplace at the Avon Theater. Participants willbe able to watch four-minute films insidethe theatre.

“People can go in and watch the filmsand come back out and enjoy the festival,”Sturgill said. “And then to support that, weare building a whole indie art area with aspotlight stage that focuses on emergingindie artists and music.”

The film festival was started four yearsago by the credit union, though this is thefirst time it will be part of the Celebration. Itwas created with the idea in mind to givefilmmakers a platform to showcase theirwork, and the only “rule” is that the creditunion’s logo or tagline be somewhere in thefilm, even simply in the background.

“It’s about both amateurs andprofessionals sending in their work andhaving the ability to have a platform and befeatured,” said Chris Phillips, Land ofLincoln Credit Union’s vice president ofmarketing. “The big thing to me is thatthere’s something about seeing your film onthe big screen that is powerful and for thegeneral public to see it as well.”

Land of Lincoln has received films fromall over the country for the project, as wellas a few from abroad, Phillips said.

There will also be a group of local artistswho will be demonstrating their craft allweekend, from painters to sculptors. Craftbeers will also be available for samplingfrom McGorray’s Golf and Grille in this area, between Water and North streets.

For those who wish to partake in thecrafts, there will be a community art projectwhere people can paint a four-inch squarethat will become part of a large collage thatwill eventually be displayed for the public inthe community.

“We started (this area) last year with aspotlight stage, and it went over extremelywell,” Sturgill said. “There is a lot of greattalent not just locally but also nationally whoare trying to break into the entertainmentworld, and the Decatur Celebration givesthem a lot of exposure. We want people tobe able to say ‘they’re huge now, and I sawthem at the Decatur Celebration!’”

Carnival Excitement

A new carnival by Miller SpectacularShows, located in the Decatur Civic Centerparking lot, will offer attendees of theCelebration “fresh, modern and excitingnew rides that have never been at thefestival before,” Sturgill said. “It’s a verynice presentation.”

During the Thursday evening before theweekend-long Celebration begins, the newcarnival will hold a preview night, where an$18 wristband will buy you all you can ridefor that night.

However, you can still get 12 tickets for$10 if you don’t want to buy a wristband,Sturgill pointed out. Each ride takes aminimum of two tickets.

“We really felt like the carnival neededfreshening up, and we went to bid and thisis the carnival we chose. It had new ridesthat would energize people again,” Sturgillsaid. “We wanted to bring in some newthings and get people excited again.”

Good Times Stage

The Good Time Stage has always beenon Main Street, but this year, it will beformatted to country music for the first time.

“Over the past few years, we’ve hadcountry artists here and there, and theyalways brought in huge crowds,” Sturgillsaid. “Our country music station 95Q is oneof the huge supporters in our network. Theyare on board to help promote and supportthat.”

“There are so many talented groups tochoose from, especially in Nashville, not toofar away from us,” she added.

Wine Garden

Festival-goers this year canfind a wine garden on PrairieStreet in which to sampledelicious wines from 7 differentIllinois wineries. Sturgill said heroffice is working with the Illinois GrapeGrowers and Vintners Association to recruitthe wineries for the garden.

“It’ll all be under a tent and nicely shadedand a cooler spot to hang out because itdoes get hot,” Sturgill said. “It will be a veryupscale patio area.”

The nearby Heritage Stage will also beformatted to blues music to “go along withthe wine and blues feel,” Sturgill said.

There will be no admission to get into thetent; tickets for sampling or full glasses ofwine will be available for purchase.

• Pheasant Hollow Winery (Whittington, IL)• Fox Valley Winery (Oswego, )• Lyn-Nita Vineyards (Elkville, IL)• Ridgeview Winery (Sterling, IL)• Fox Creek Winery (Olney, IL)• The Village Vineyard & Winery (Camp Point, IL)• Kite Hill Vineyards (Carbondale, IL)

Wine case sales are available at the WineGarden with pick up at The Decanter.

Family Fun Zone

Surrounding the Christian Music Stage onMain and Franklin, a new Family Fun Zonewill be located for dance troupeperformances and family karaoke.

“We’ll have a street performer there – TheStrong Man John Beatty, who incorporateskids and people into his show. He was on(NBC television show) America’s Got Talentlast year,” Sturgill said.

Local dance groups, a karate demogroup and even an adult country linedancing group will be performing in theFamily Fun Zone.

“The Street Jam Stage is local talent andso is the dance performance area. All of theproud moms, grandmas and dads cancome watch their kids perform,” Sturgillsaid.

A More Green Celebration

The DecaturCelebration prides itselfon being an extremelyclean environment, with425 trash cans spreadthroughout the festival and trashbeing efficiently picked up at the end ofeach day.

This year, 250 recycling containers willaccompany the hundreds of trash cans atthe Celebration.

“We’re recycling this year for the firsttime,” Sturgill said. “Pepsi cups, waterbottles, beer cups – anything paper orplastic can be recycled.”

Sturgill said she was inspired to add therecycling component to the festival afterattending a music conference last fall, where recycling at music festivals was atrending topic.

“It’s important to me personally as well. And the city recently re-structured its trashhauling to include single stream recycling,so people don’t have to pre-sort theirrecycling,” she said. “Everything wasaligning to say this is the time to try this.”

Ron Shumaker, president of MidwestFiber Recycling, which will be handling therecycling efforts along with the MaconCounty Environment Management

Department, said he is glad that theCelebration organizers are going about thisnew initiative “in the right way.”

“I think it’s great; it needed to be done,”he said.

Shumaker expects to see a large volumeof cardboard recycled from the Celebrationand hopes for a lot of recycled containers, depending on the cooperation of thefestival-goers. Midwest Fiber will run thecontainer materials through its materialrecovery facility in Normal.
