The Genesis of the International Year of Chemistry

Having recognized that Chemical sciences have contributed much to the humanity in all walks of life,International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) in 2006 started initiatives to secure adesignation of an International Year of Chemistry by United Nations Educational Scientific CulturalOrganization (UNESCO). The project carried out by IUPAC with this aim was completed in 2008 andsubsequently the executive board of UNESCO endorsed the proposal for declaration by United Nations(UN) of 2011 as International Year of Chemistry .

UN recognized that Chemistry and allied fields had contributed much to the betterment of human life on thisplanet and they are vital to achieve the millennium goals of UN. Obviously, this understanding led to theorganizing of celebrations of IYC 2011 by IUPAC, UNESCO and UN as global partners along with ChemicalSocieties, Industries, and Educational and Research Institutes across the globe

Year 2011 coincides with the 100 th anniversary of the Nobel Prize awarded to Madam Marie Curie . Theyear also is the 100th anniversary of the founding of the International Association of Chemical Societies, providing a chance to highlight the benefits of international scientific collaboration.

All over the world, the year 2011 is being celebrated as the International Year of Chemistry with the themeChemistry-Our life, Our future .

IYC 2011 celebrations envisaged the following objectives:

Increase the public appreciation of chemistry in meeting world needs. Increase interest of young people in chemistry. Generate enthusiasm of the creative future of chemistry Celebrate the 100 th anniversary of the Nobel Prize awarded to Madam Marie Curie Celebrate the 100 th anniversary of the founding of International Association of Chemical Societies.

Yanbu Industrial College (YIC) grabs the opportunity

YIC, one of the premier institutes of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia realized themultifaceted opportunities available through the active participation of theglobal event of the celebration of the International Year of Chemistry2011.

The institute took the bold step to make this an occasion to showcase itspotentials to the international organizations like IUPAC, UNESCO, UN andsimilar other reputed agencies while focusing on the following importantobjectives.

Make YIC to emerge as a hub for educational, research andindustrial consultancies at local and national levels.

Establish strong links with local industries, reputed universitiesand international organizations of science and technology forcollaborative and mutually enriching programs and projects

Establish the high profile of the institute at international levelsand become one of the leaders of education in science andtechnology, in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and guide the nationtowards sustainable development.

Enlighten the public the need of safe use and disposal of chemicals and on green manufacturing processes.

YIC community decided to take this opportunity to bring the neighboringacademic institutes, universities, industrial establishments and the localpublic under one umbrella to achieve the targeted objectives. YIC stronglybelieved that the participation would bring some benefits in the immediatefuture and in the long run. Some of the immediate benefits the institutecounted on are:

An awakening among the YIC students and the Younggeneration at large in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia towardslearning chemical sciences.

Exposing the young generation to the enormous opportunities inchemical industry.

Attract more students to YIC with great enthusiasm. A profile of the institute that prominently appears at the

    international scenario.

IUPAC Approval for YIC CelebrationsAs a first step the organizing committee prepared a tentative program for thewhole year of 2011 throughout which IYC celebrations would continue. Theprograms included seminars, webinars, public lectures, campaigns for safeuse and disposal of chemicals and protection of environment, communityoutreach programs, factory visits, open house and exhibition, Lab visits forschool children, educational movie shows, skits on history of chemistry andcontests for students. The plan of activities was communicated to the IYCPanel for approval. Soon YIC got its plan of activities approved and this gave

YIC many privileges. Some of them include rights for posting our activities atthe IYC site, the authorized use of the logos of IUPAC, UNESCO, IYC etc., and

the educational movies produced by participating industries and chemicalsocieties.

The IYC panel frequently expressed its satisfaction and appreciation of the YIC activities. The activities are posted at the IYC site with the followingaddress http://www.chemistry2011.org/participate/activities/show?id=661 .

The above link gives short reports of all activities, selected photos of events,

    The Outcomes and RecommendationsOutcomes :

    1. YIC emerged as the number one participant from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the global event of IYC 2011 based on the numberand variety of activities that fulfils the objectives of the celebrationsof IYC 2011 and Chemiluminescence 2011.

    2. The activities organized became an eye-opener to theachievements of chemical sciences in the human service and couldinspire the YIC students and the young school students in theKingdom towards learning chemical sciences.

    3. More channels of collaboration and interaction were opened up with YIC and the industrial fraternity around.

    4. Opened up new avenues for fruitful discussion and interaction withmany equipment manufacturers in the field of chemical engineeringand technology, an essential requirement for procurement of suitable and cutting edge equipment for teaching and research.

  • 8/3/2019 Report-IYC 2011 Celebration at YIC

    44/49

    5. YIC campaign for the environmental protection and its communityoutreach programs with the student participation in large numbersare some milestones in the history of the Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia.

    Recommendations:

During the course of the celebrations, the organizers came acrossmany issues of concern and academic interest and had an opportunityto brainstorm on them. The results of these sessions in a nut- shellare:

    1. Segregation of waste with color coded bins is essential for safedisposal of even domestic waste.

    2. Harvesting of solar energy in the direct mode for lighting is thebest and the most environment-friendly mode of its utilization.Photovoltaic cells are not the right solution for solar energy

utilization with its lower efficiency, shorter life, higher costs andenergy intensive extraction and fabrication procedures.

    3. Reuse of water needs special attention and the possibilities of secondary uses of the used water after simple manipulations shouldbe explored.

    4. The Chemiluminisence may be organized as the branded annualInternational conference series of the Chemical Engineering

Technology Department from next year onwards (2012).5. The Chemiluminisence website may be retained as the activity

page of Chemical Engineering Department for publishing its day today activities, conference notifications, articles of general interest, podcasts etc with editing rights vested with the department.

    6. The IT department needs more experts and expertise in the area of web based programs and operations.

    7. The communication channels with the local industry and theacademic departments should be operational without muchdifficulty. Same is the case with institutes and universities.

    8. The RC cable-TV services must be able to support and project theeducational programs and discussions or campaigns on issues of public interest originating from RCs premier educational

establishments.9. During the week of observance of chemical safety at YIC, a self auditing on chemical safety was done at YIC. It revealed manyfailures in sticking to safety regulations especially in the area of compressed gases, for which technical solutions though exist butdifficult to implement due to cumbersome bureaucratic proceduresor insufficient attention.
