2010-11 community report - official dallas stars...
TRANSCRIPT
Throughout the 2010-11 season, the Dallas Stars Foundation continued its efforts to
positively affect the lives of children, and it is through teamwork, interaction and education that
enables the Dallas Stars to have a strong presence in the Dallas/Fort Worth community.
Our community report highlights ways that our players, coaches and staff are making
a significant impact in the community and reflects some of our best moments off the ice. Our
players have enabled us to support great organizations such as Children’s Medical Center,
North Texas Food Bank, and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, along with many more, and we
are very grateful to all of them for their time and commitment towards these programs.
Of course our positive impact in the community would not be possible without our fans and cor-
porate partners. Your generosity has allowed the Dallas Stars Foundation to award over $3.43
million to over 315 very deserving organizations since 1998. On behalf of the Dallas Stars
Foundation, I would like to thank you all for your support. We remain committed to our mission
and are looking forward to another successful season in 2011-12!
Sincerely,
Lora Farris

In its continuing commitment to the community, the Stars organization established the Dallas Stars Foundation,
which is the official charity of the Dallas Stars’ management and
players. The Dallas Stars realize that professional sports teams
have a tremendous social and economic impact upon their cities
and states. A team’s athletes are called upon to provide leadership,
inspiration and support for their community. With this in mind,
the Dallas Stars Foundation was created to help maximize the
Stars’ presence in the community and to assist various non-
profit organizations, particularly children’s charities, through
philanthropic grants and program implementation.

The Dallas Stars Foundation made in-kind and monetary donations to over 1,000 different
organizations including schools, non-profit organizations and sports related programs.
The Dallas Stars actively participated in 53 various fundraising and community events
including appearances and educational promotion, which totaled 450 hours volunteered.
Through donations made by Dallas Stars players and season ticket holders via the
community tickets program, over $76,000 in tickets were donated for children and active
military personnel.
Thanks to the generosity of our fans and sponsors, the Dallas Stars Foundation grossed
over $668,000 from individual contributions, fundraising events and in-game initiatives.
Mission StatementThe Dallas Stars Foundation was established to serve as a
positive force throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.
The Foundation focuses its efforts on providing support
to the children of the community so they may lead quality
lives and develop into contributing members of society.
Through teamwork, interaction, and education, the Dallas
Stars Foundation works to bring together all members of the
Metroplex and build a bright future for today’s youth.

The Dallas Stars Foundation’s most rewarding activity
is being able to make a positive difference in children’s
lives and provide them life-impacting opportunities they
would otherwise not have. One of the most effective ways
of accomplishing this is through its annual contribution
of monetary grants to various local children’s charities.
The Foundation has awarded over $3.43 million to local
children’s charities since 1998.
$238, 360 was awarded by the Foundation to the 25 very deserving Metroplex organizations listed above in 2010-11.

2010-2011 Grant Recipients
Scholarships
The Dallas Stars created the Bob Gainey Honorary
Scholarship, which goes to one deserving Metroplex high
school senior each year who embodies the exemplary
qualities that were synonymous with Bob Gainey.
Each spring, the Bob Gainey Honorary Scholarship is
awarded to a student who has demonstrated a passion for
excellence in the classroom as well as success on the playing
field. Qualified candidates should exhibit the highest levels
of dignity, integrity and determination for which the
award’s namesake is known.
This scholarship is in the amount of $1,250 per year for a
maximum of $5,000 over four years. The funds are applied
directly towards college/university tuition, provided the
student meets certain academic requirements throughout
the term of the scholarship award.
This year’s Bob Gainey Honorary Scholarship recipient
is Sarah Stephens. Sarah attends Calvary Christian
Academy, where she earned a 3.875 GPA, served on the
A/AB Honor Roll, National Honor Society, and was a
Homecoming Court Representative. She was the Varsity
Cheerleading Co-Captain, and was a part of STITCHES
Outreach, and Children’s Ministry Sunday School. Sarah
demonstrates the qualities and leadership skills deserving
of this honor.
The Dallas Stars created the Junior Stars Scholarship Fund in 1997 as a means to promote hockey and ice-skating advancement to area students who have not only demonstrated strong sportsmanship but academic excellence as well.
Interested candidates must display strong scholastic
aptitude, a demonstrated interest in extracurricular and/or community involvement, financial need, and exemplary conduct during practices, games and competitions. Recipients must also have been enrolled at a Metroplex Dr Pepper StarCenter at least one year prior to applying for the scholarship to be eligible.

The 2010 Dallas Stars Dr Pepper Golf Classic was held on
November 8, 2010. For the third consecutive year, the event
took place at the prestigious TPC at Craig Ranch in McKinney.
34 teams, all paired with a Dallas Stars celebrity including all
of the Dallas Stars players, coaches, and front office executives
participated in the event and raised close to $120,000 for the
Dallas Stars Foundation.
The Stars held their morning practice on the day of the
tournament at the McKinney Dr Pepper StarCenter, just east
of the golf course, which made for an easy transition and a fun
day. Some highlights of the event included Sportsradio 1310
The Ticket’s BaD Radio Show with Bob & Dan broadcasting
live on-site, the Dallas Stars Ice Girls taking photos with each
of the 34 teams, and of course some great prizes.
The tournament concluded with a fabulous dinner in the
clubhouse. Ralph Strangis and Daryl Reaugh emceed, with
remarks from Gene Honermann, regional vice president/
GM of Dr Pepper Snapple Group and representatives from
the Stars.

The event, enjoyed by 500-plus
Stars fans, raised $227,000 for the
Dallas Stars Foundation. Attendees
spent the evening mingling with
their favorite Stars players in a fun
party setting with various casino
tables featuring the Stars acting
as dealers. When guests weren’t
gambling, they were enjoying a
delicious dinner catered by Dallas
Chop House and Dallas Fish
Market, decadent desserts provided
by Wendy Krispin, and refreshments
from one of the well- stocked bars
thanks to Brown-Forman, Ben E.
Keith and Dr Pepper.
Award-winning TV and radio
announcers Ralph Strangis and
Daryl ‘Razor’ Reaugh were also
popular amongst the crowd, and
proved to be a very entertaining duo
as they entertained while emceeing
the live auction at the end of the
night. The live auction raised a
record setting $70,000. Topping the
bidding at $20,000 was a trip with
the team to Prince Edward Island
for training camp in September.
Other big sellers included dinner
with Adam Burish and Jamie Benn,
a kids’ party for 20 at Dr Pepper
Arena with Steve Ott and Trevor
Daley and a trip to the Winter
Classic, including First Class airfare
on American Airlines and two tickets
to the game.
Another big hit at the event,
was the Stars players’ “favorite
things” baskets, included in the
silent auction. The players’ wives
and girlfriends helped put together
baskets that best represented their
man - anything from favorite movies,
music, and candy to iPods, jerseys
and game -used sticks. The baskets
alone raised more than $8,000.
Overall, the event was
another huge success, once
again confirming that the Park
Place Dealerships/Dallas Stars
Casino Night is one of the most
memorable nights of the year.
The 13th annual Park Place Dealerships/Dallas Stars Casino Night was held on
March 24 at Park Place Jaguar in Plano.
Sigel’s Luncheon Series2011 marked the return of the Dallas Stars Sigel’s Luncheon
Series, a series of three luncheons, held in January, February and
March. The luncheons, held at Sambuca Uptown, III Forks and
Sambuca 360, served as an opportunity for Stars fans to dine and
interact with select Stars players and front office personnel in
a casual setting. Each luncheon featured a Q&A session with the
players, emceed by Ralph and Razor, followed by photos and
autographs. Featured guests included Brad Richards, Jamie Benn,
Mark Fistric, Steve Ott, Loui Eriksson, Kari Lehtonen, Brenden
Morrow, Stephane Robidas, and Jamie Langenbrunner, Head
Coach Marc Crawford, Associate Coach Willie Desjardins, and
assistant coach Charlie Huddy. The Luncheon series raised over
$30,000 for the Dallas Stars Foundation.

Fundraisers
In-Game Fundraisers
Player for a Day Raffle This year, the Dallas Stars held a “Player for a Day Raffle”, in
which raffle tickets were sold to fans for five dollars each throughout the first few games of the season. The winner of the raffle
was treated as a “Dallas Star for a Day”- receiving a “two day player contract on a $1,000,000 salary” ($5,480 total in the form
of a VISA gift card), a trip for 2 on the team plane to the Minnesota Wild game on January 9th and a stay in the team hotel, a
Dallas Stars jersey, and a meet and greet with select Dallas Stars players.
Green Bag Sale The Dallas Stars Foundation presented a “green bag special” at each pre-season game,
as well as the final game of the season. For a $150 donation, fans received a bag full of autographed Dallas Stars items such as
sticks, pucks, jerseys, and pennants. The bags were in very high demand, selling out at each game and raising close to $20,000
for the Foundation!
11
2011 Calendar The 2011 Dallas Stars Foundation Calendar presented
by SuperMedia was shot on location at various Dallas
hotspots and landmarks such as the State Fair of
Texas, the Joule Hotel, House of Blues, and Union
Station. Players included Jamie Benn, Kari Lehtonen,
Adam Burish, and Brenden Morrow. Photography
by Carmine LiDestri (www.viphotovideo.com) and
clothing generously provided by Sebastian’s Closet.
$35,000 was raised through the sale of the calendar.
Mystery Puck Sale The Dallas Stars Foundation once again conducted its annual Mystery Puck sale this
holiday season. Every Dallas Stars player participates in this fan- favorite fundraiser, where a $30 donation to the Foundation gives fans
a gift-wrapped, autographed hockey puck from one of the players. The player remains a mystery until the puck is unwrapped, and if it
is signed in gold, the fan wins a private meet and greet with the player who signed it! As the most successful in-game fundraiser for the
Dallas Stars Foundation the mystery puck sale earned over $108,000!
The North Texas Food Bank received a $25,000 grant
from the Dallas Stars Foundation during the 2009-10 season
in support of their “Food 4 Kids” program. The program
provides backpacks to children who are at risk of going
hungry on the weekends. The program currently serves
over 325 schools in 32 school districts across Collin, Dallas,
Denton, Ellis, Fannin, Hunt, Rockwall, and Kaufman
counties. Over 8,000 children are currently receiving a
backpack each week.
On February 8th, the North Texas Food Bank and
the Dallas Stars Foundation put together a volunteer
event for Stars players and fans, dubbed “Reach
For The Stars.” Stars Captain Brenden Morrow,
Defenseman Trevor Daley, and Goaltender Andrew
Raycroft took part in the event, which turned into a
friendly competition among the teammates. The group of
fans broke off into three teams, each “captained” by a Stars
player, and walked back into the food bank’s warehouse
where three large tables were stocked full of nonperishable,
kid-friendly, nutritious food. The three teams each had 45
minutes to compete to see who could stuff the most bags of
food to fill the backpacks.
Altogether, the Dallas Stars
“Reach for the Stars” event was
a very productive, fun, and
successful event, as the
Stars team finished the
day contributing a total of
6,244 meals to the North
Texas Food Bank.

Toby Petersen was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when he
was only 5 years old. He was determined to not let the disease
get in the way of achieving his dreams as a professional athlete.
Toby wears an insulin pump when he plays, testing his blood-
sugar levels 8-10 times on game days, including during periods.
He wants every young child struggling with diabetes to know
that it IS possible to achieve their goals, despite having this
disease. Toby currently serves as a special celebrity ambassador
for JDRF (Junior Diabetes Research Foundation). This season,
he attended both the JDRF kickoff luncheon and Dream Gala,
in addition to speaking to students at Castle Montessori in
McKinney in support of their upcoming walk to raise money
for JDRF. He was the guest speaker and read a children’s book
about diabetes to the students at the school’s kickoff rally
for the Kids Walk to Support Diabetes program. In support
of this program, paper sneakers are sold by the students
for a one dollar donation, and they’re displayed across the
hallways of the school as the children begin their fundraising
efforts. Toby has also worked with JDRF to shoot a video that
will tell his story and be used at assemblies at local schools
who are raising money for the cause.

Kari Lehtonen and Toby Petersen
visited The Family Place, a local
non-profit organization that provides
assistance to victims of family violence.
The Family Place provides a 24 hour
hotline service, emergency shelter and
counseling services for battered women,
and a supportive living and transitional
housing program for women and
children. And now, the children living
at the shelter can go to school every day
without having to leave the comfort and
safety of their new homes.
The Dallas Stars Foundation
presented The Family Place with a
grant for $25,000 during the 2007-
2008 grant cycle. This money was used
to build and furnish a new school house
at the shelter, and it was open for use
just in time for the 2010-2011 school
year. This new schoolhouse provides
the students with a safe place to go to
school and learn, just a few steps away
from their rooms in the shelter. Upon
arrival, Kari and Toby toured the
facility, which houses over 200 victims
of family abuse in furnished rooms and
even has 2-3 bedroom apartments for
families to live in. After the tour of the
facility, the players were led outside to
check out the “nature classroom” and
then into the schoolhouse. Everything
inside the schoolhouse was donated
by the Dallas Stars Foundation,
including desks, tables, chairs, and even
the computers. The Dallas Stars are
acknowledged with a logo on the wall
in the entryway, and a framed stick and
jersey in each of the classrooms.
Lehtonen and Petersen were greeted
by a group of excited children, who
welcomed them with a big “Thaaank
you Dallas Starsss” shouted in unison.
The two NHL players joined them
in the classroom, pulled up some
child sized chairs to the craft tables,
decorated cookies with green and gold
sprinkles, talked hockey, took pictures,
and signed autographs.
It was a very special day for The
Family Place and the Dallas Stars
Foundation, seeing how the donation
is having such a positive effect on
children in the Metroplex.

Kari Lehtonen PSA - Metroplex Animal CoalitionKari helped raise awareness for the Metroplex Animal Coalition by filming a Public Service Announcement that was played
in the arena during the game on March 13. More than 200,000 pets are put to death each year because they don’t have a home.
Kari, having 3 dogs of his own, felt this was an important message to convey to fans. That same day, cats and dogs were available
for adoption out on the plaza. The MAC is an alliance of more than 50 nonprofit animal welfare organizations in the DFW
Metroplex, and the organizations work together to save as many dog and cat lives as possible.
Movember “Movember,” which began about 11 years ago in
Australia, is designed to help bring awareness to prostate cancer and other
men’s diseases. By growing mustaches in November, some Stars players hoped
to help raise funds and call attention to how prostate cancer can be prevented.
The movement has caught on in recent years in North America, especially in
Canada. 142 players on 13 different NHL teams participated in Movember
in 2010, including the Stars. Stars Defenseman Mark Fistric headed up the
team’s efforts, and the rest of the team gladly signed on to take part! Through
Mark’s and the rest of the team’s fundraising pages, more than $5,000 was
raised by the Dallas Stars for the cause.
Teammates For Kids More than half of the Dallas Stars players and
coaches participate in donating to the Garth Brooks Teammates for Kids Foundation. The Foun-
dation focuses on contributing financial resources to non-profit organizations that benefit children’s
health, education, and inner city services. 100 percent of the money donated goes to children’s
charities! Since the Foundation’s inception in 1999, more than 2,800 professional athletes have
joined the team, contributing more than $80 million in cash, in-kind donations and scholarships.

James Berg Road TripOn opening night, the Dallas Stars Foundation presented a raffle in which fans could buy tickets for the chance to be a
“Dallas Stars Player for a Day.” The raffle tickets were five dollars, and the winner would receive a personalized, autographed
jersey and the opportunity to travel with the team to an away game. Not only did the raffle raise more than $6,000 for the
Foundation, the winner of the raffle generously donated this unique opportunity to a very deserving child.
The Dallas Stars Foundation contacted a past grant recipient, The Clayton Dabney Foundation for Kids With Cancer,
to help locate that deserving child, seven year old hockey player James Berg, who was fighting a tough battle with Leukemia.
James and his dad were invited to accompany the entire Stars team on the team plane to Minnesota. Stars Defenseman
Stephane Robidas, who had been notified of James’ story and his presence on the trip, took the little boy under his wing for
the next couple days. He presented James with his own Dallas Stars Jersey, and introduced him to the whole team on the way
to Minnesota. Throughout the trip, James got to dine with the players pre-game, watch them warm up from the bench, chat
with Coach Crawford, go to the press box and sound the goal horn, ride on the zamboni, and much, much more! It truly
was the trip of a lifetime for James Berg.

Brad Richards
Foundation Poker Event This season, Brad brought his foundation to Dallas, and carried
on its good work in North Texas. The Brad Richards Foundation
hosted its first event in November 2010, Brad Richards Poker
Stars, a celebrity poker fundraiser. The event raised more than
$40,000, all in support of the renovation of the teen lounge at
Children’s Medical Center.
P.E.I. Donation Following a very successful Dallas Stars’
training camp in Charlottetown, PEI in September, Brad Richards stopped in to visit the pediatric unit of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital to make a donation of $500,000 to help children in his home province. During the event, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation formally announced the establishment of a Brad Richards Named Endowment to help purchase medical equipment to help children. Richard’s gift was made in honor of his cousin and best friend, Jamie Reynolds, who passed away in 1989 with a brain tumour when he was 7 and Brad was almost 9 years old. Brad Richards had been waiting a long time to properly honor his cousin Jamie in his home province. When it was announced the Dallas Stars was coming to PEI, Richards knew the timing was perfect. A highlight of the weekend was Brad purchasing tickets for the Dallas Stars intra-squad game for Island families with children who were cared for at the hospital so they could attend the game. Following the game, the children had the unique opportunity to personally meet Brad and get his autograph and a photo with him.

Flashes of HopeFlashes of Hope is a nonprofit
organization that changes the way
children with cancer and other life
threatening illnesses see themselves
through the gift of photography and
raises money for pediatric cancer
research. Portraits of the children are
taken by award-winning photographers
to help them feel better about their
changing appearance by celebrating it.
For families of terminally ill children, it’s
especially important to have a portrait
that preserves forever the beauty, grace
and dignity of their child.
The Dallas Stars Foundation awarded
Flashes of Hope a $7,500 grant during
the 2009- 2010 season to begin the Dallas
chapter at Children’s Medical Center
and Cook Children’s Hospital. Since the
chapter’s inception in June 2010, close to
150 kids have been photographed. Brad
Richards visited patients at Children’s
Medical Center in April and took part
in this very rewarding program. The
patients were very excited to have a
professional hockey player to chat with
and put them at ease about the photo
shoot. The photos with Brad are a very
special, lasting memory for the children
and their families.

Taylor’s Gift NightSaturday, November 20th, 2010, honored and raised
awareness for Taylor’s Gift, a local organization whose
mission is dedicated to increasing organ donation through
youth education. The foundation was created by Todd and
Tara Storch, whose daughter, Taylor Storch, was 13 when she
passed away in a ski accident in Colorado. Her parents quickly
made the decision to have her organs donated to those in
need, and in doing so, Taylor Storch helped to save five lives.
Taylor’s parents created the Taylor’s Gift Foundation with a
purpose to increase organ donation, re-gift life, renew health,
and restore families. Ralph Strangis knows Todd Storch
personally and felt the need to get the Stars involved
with the mission of Taylor’s Gift.
November 20th was officially dubbed “Taylor’s Gift
Night”. Fans were able to donate to the cause or sign up
to be an organ donor at the Dallas Stars Foundation table,
and were able to receive blue Taylor’s Gift wristbands at the
merchandise stores for a small donation. The Storch family
was interviewed by Ralph during the first intermission
for the television broadcast, and the Dallas Stars donated
proceeds from the evening’s tickets sales to the Taylor’s
Gift Foundation. The Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche
players showed their support by using sticks wrapped with
blue tape during warm-ups, while coaches, broadcasters and
other Dallas Stars staff wore blue Taylor’s Gift ties. The sticks
were later autographed by the players and auctioned off on
NHL.com to raise additional funds for the organization.

Hockey Fights Cancer Hockey Fights Cancer is a joint initiative founded in
December 1998 by the National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players’ Association. It is a way for the hockey community to come together to fight cancer. The Dallas Stars’ annual Hockey Fights Cancer night was held on October 23 and $33,760 was raised for the cause.
The Stars recognized several charitable organizations for their efforts in combating cancer and at the same time, raised a significant amount of money that was then donated to help families affected by the disease and groups who are dedicated to finding for a cure.
Among the groups represented at different tables throughout the concourse were Wipe Out Kids’ Cancer, Children’s Cancer Fund, National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, Mary Crowley Cancer Research Center, No Walker Left Behind, Susan
G. Komen, PanCAN, and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Stars players’ wives and girlfriends, each wearing pink Stars jerseys autographed by their husband/significant others, collected donations on the concourse. Those jerseys were then auctioned off during the game.
The players showed their support for the cause by using lavender or pink tape on their sticks during warm-ups before the game and wearing ‘Hockey Fights Cancer’ decals on their helmets. Center Mike Ribeiro kept pink tape on the end of his stick throughout the game. Additionally, Stars coaches, executives and broadcast team sported lavender ties throughout the evening.
Wipe Out Kids Cancer
Wipe Out Kids’ Cancer had a few
very unique opportunities, including
representation in the Stick Kid
Presentation prior to the game, 35 suite
tickets, and they were invited to a post-
game meet and greet with Brandon
Segal and Trevor Daley.
20
Kidd’s Kid
Bryce Taylor was sixteen years old when he was diagnosed with
a brain tumor, and he was not expected to live until Christmas.
His birthday fell on Saturday, October 23rd, and Bryce
was to be released from the hospital to his home
to celebrate with his family. He was a HUGE
Dallas Stars Fan, and really wanted to have
his “dream team” involved with his birthday
celebration. A representative from KISS
FM’s Kidd’s Kids program knew Bryce’s
story, and reached out to the Dallas Stars.
Bryce and his family were welcomed to a
private suite at the Dallas Stars game on
his birthday, and he was escorted down to
meet the Dallas Stars players after the game.
Unfortunately, Bryce passed away a few months
later, but hopefully the Dallas Stars did their part in
making his last memories great ones.

Event Sponsor Thank You Party
On Sunday, October 24th, the Stars Front Office team participated in Light The Night Walk in downtown Dallas,
starting at Main Street Garden. Employees exceeded their goal of $15,000 and raised a total of $18,809 for the Leukemia
& Lymphoma Society to celebrate and commemorate lives touched by cancer. The Dallas Stars brought in further
revenue for LLS through the form of grants from the Dallas Stars Foundation and the NHL, as well as a portion of
ticket sales from the October 24th game. All of the Dallas Stars efforts combined to raise a grand total of $39,609 for the
Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The Dallas Stars team came in second place in corporate team revenue in Dallas, and
the team revenue increased 61% from 2009.
22
Blood DrivesThe Dallas Stars teamed up with the American Red Cross on January 7and held a
blood drive at American Airlines Center. Every donor received tickets to a Stars game,
an autographed puck, and photographs of their favorite Stars players. The Dallas Stars Ice Girls helped pass out juice and
cookies in the canteen and mingled with the crowd.
American Airlines also offered all presenting donors a discount on their next flight and one winner was selected for a
roundtrip trip ticket to watch a Dallas Stars road game. The drive was a major success, drawing in 288 donors and collecting
221 units of blood, which translates to 663 lives potentially saved. An exceptional 78 percent of these donors gave that day for
the first time with the American Red Cross.
Light The Night Walk
Rock & Wrap It UpThe Dallas Stars have initiated a program at American Airlines Center that sends all
unused, wrapped food that is left over (not sold) from the concession stands to a local
shelter. The program, which is called “Rock and Wrap It Up” is a national program and is
being implemented in all 30 NHL markets. The Austin Street Centre was the recipient
of the leftover product from AAC/Dallas Stars this season. The Stars implemented the
program at the second pre season game and sent enough product to the shelter on a per
game basis to feed an average of just over 100 people per night. This program helps the
community in two big ways, by feeding a large number of people that are in need, and as a
result, the excess food is not being thrown into the dumpster.
Bully Proof USA is a nonprofit foundation committed
to battling bullying in every school in America. Their
mission is to “Secure America’s future by bully proofing
our schools one student at a time through education and
awareness.” Dallas Stars Alumni Bob Bassen is an advocate
of this cause and helped organize a “Bully Proof USA”
night at the Dallas Stars game on April 5. Alumni including
Bob Bassen, Jere Lehtinen, Landon Wilson, Brett Hull,
Gerald Diduck, Steve Dykstra, Steve Duchesne, Andy
Duchesne, and Andy Moog were present at the Dallas Stars
Foundation table in support of the cause. Representatives
from Bully Proof USA passed out copies of their book
to kids and adults while the alumni signed autographs and
created awareness for the cause.

Community TicketsThe Dallas Stars Foundation’s community ticket program allows not only our organization, but our
season ticket holders a chance to serve the community by donating their tickets to various charities and
civic programs throughout the area. Season ticket holders and corporations who donate tickets back to the
Foundation are eligible for a tax receipt, with their contribution being 100 percent tax deductible. Through
the generosity of our season ticket holders and their ticket donations to the Foundation’s community
tickets program, many non-profit organizations have the opportunity to spread the excitement of Dallas
Stars hockey to their employees, volunteers and designated beneficiaries. A total of 1,050 tickets were
donated through the Dallas Stars Community Tickets program this season.
If you are interested in donating your tickets, please email [email protected]

Children’s Medical Center Hospital Visits
The wives and girlfriends of the Dallas Stars players,
coaches, and front office worked together with the Dallas
Stars Foundation to support a local non-profit organization,
Genesis Women’s Shelter, in their holiday initiative to
“Become a Genesis Santa.” They each adopted families
who would otherwise not be able to provide Christmas
presents for their children. For many of these families, it
is the first time in a long time where they will have the
opportunity to experience the joys of a holiday season in a
safe place- both physically and emotionally.
The wives and girlfriends of the Dallas Stars adopted
a total of seventeen families, and many of those families
included two or more children. They delivered the
presents to the Shelter’s Drop-Off location the week before
Christmas. The Dallas Stars Foundation supplied all of the
wrapping paper, bows, and ribbons, and the presents were
taken to the families at the shelter so the mom’s could play
a role in wrapping the gifts for their children. The event
was a great success, and Genesis Women’s Shelter was very
thankful for everything that the Dallas Stars did to support
the women and children in their shelter.
The Dallas Stars team takes part in hospital visits every
year around the holiday season, as a way to brighten the day
of local children who must remain in the hospital for the
holidays. This year’s hospital visits took place on December
1st, at Children’s Medical Center Dallas. The players split
up into groups and visited all 6 playrooms, where video
games, basketball, and arts and crafts were a hit with the
children. They distributed goodie bags to each child, full
of Stars lunchboxes, stickers, pencils, and player cards to
be autographed. The players also made visits to the patient
rooms, so that the patients who weren’t well enough to go to
the playrooms could participate in the fun. The Dallas Stars
were made aware of a 5 year old boy named Mavrick who is
suffering from a rare combination of three different types
of Leukemia. Mavrick is a huge Stars fan, and his family
wrote a letter to the Stars suggesting how special it would
be for Mavrick to get a visit from Steve Ott. Ott heard
Mavrick’s story and couldn’t wait to get a chance to meet
him. As the rest of the team said goodbye to the children
and headed out, Ott found Mavrick in his room, where
he and his “ Otter” stuffed animal were waiting. Ott hung
out with Mavrick, signed autographs, took pictures, played
a few games, and even autographed and gave Mavrick the
jersey off his back, Thanks to the generosity and kindness
of Steve Ott and the rest of the Dallas Stars team, a little bit
of holiday magic was felt around the hospital, on a day that
always serves as an emotional and uplifting one, for both
the players and patients alike.

Holidays
panelISTS - Marc Crawford, John Rhadigan, Gina Miller, Adam Burish, Nick Grossman, Ralph Strangis
The Dallas Stars Foundation held its annual High
School Media Day in February, as students from
area high schools gathered in Frisco to watch a Stars’
practice at Dr Pepper Arena and to participate in a panel
discussion with members of the local television, radio
and sports media, as well as players from the Dallas Stars
Hockey Team.
Veteran Ralph Strangis served as Emcee of the
event and as always kept the students entertained while
speaking to them about the challenges and nuances of his
job. Stars players Adam Burish and Nicklas Grossman as
well as Head Coach Marc Crawford also served on the
panel to take questions from the audience and give a little
perspective of what it’s like to be on the other side of the
microphone. The Dallas Stars Foundation created High
School Media Day in order to provide an opportunity
for students aspiring to pursue a sports journalism career
an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look into the world of
sports media. High School Media Day allows students
an interactive environment in which they can listen and
learn from individuals who have found significant success
in the business of sports media.
Following High School Media Day, the students were
challenged to write stories about the experience. The
“best” story was selected by Strangis. The winner’s story
was published on the Dallas Stars website, she attended a
Dallas Stars game, sat in the press box, and spent a period
with Ralph and Razor in the broadcast booth.

The Dallas Stars Foundation created
the Dallas Stars Stick with Reading
program, presented by JCPenney and
MetroPCS in 1998 to encourage kids to
develop the habit of reading in their free
time. Dallas Stars forward Steve Ott was
excited to take the reigns of this great
program from departing spokesman
Marty Turco.
Students record their extracurricular
reading over an eight-week period for
the chance to win prizes. The one
classroom that read the most minutes
earned tickets to a Dallas Stars game
while the school with the most minutes
overall won a Dallas Stars Street Squad
party. The individual student in each
of the three age groups reading the
most minutes won the opportunity to
attend a Dallas Stars game with their
family, meet Steve Ott pre-game, an
autographed jersey, and be recognized
on the jumbotron during the game.
Ott attended and spoke at
the Dallas Stars Stick With
Reading Rally, held at Clay
Academy in Dallas in mid-October
to kick-off this season’s program.
A couple of his teammates, Jamie
Benn and James Neal, accompanied
him to the rally, where they spent the
afternoon talking about the benefits
and importance of reading, signing
autographs and taking pictures with
the kids. Half Price Books is one of
the program’s sponsors this year, and
they were on hand to donate 2,000
books to the Clay Academy Library.
The kids could not wait to get their
hands on them and start reading.
In addition to the kickoff rally, Steve
made appearances at JCPenney and
the grand opening of Half Price Books
in Mansfield, where he sat down and
read to a large group of children and
signed autographs.
The Stick with Reading program
is free and open to all Metroplex
classrooms, private or public, in grades
K-8. This year, more than 25,000
students registered for the program.
