I.B.M. Ring 50s December 1stmeeting was opened by President

Arnie Fuoco. Fifty members andguests were present. HomerLambeth (25480M) of Bryans

Roads MD, a former membermany years ago of Ring 50, was

re-instated into the Ring andwelcomed aboard. We have

    received an application from

Tommy Meeker (37714M) ofAnnandale VA. Tommy will be

voted on at the next meeting heattends. Jason Goldberg donated

a prize for the raffle. The 50/50drawing was won by Dr. ArnoldLevin and he donated the money

to Ring 50. Bob Patterson madea suggestion to award the youth

attending the most Counts ofConjuring meetings for 2010 to beawarded a paid membership in the

I.B.M. for 2011. This was turnedinto a motion and passed by all

those attending the meeting.President Arnie Fuoco facilitated

the questions for the meeting ofthe Panel of Experts. The panel

shown above was (L to R) Dick

    Christian, Hugh Turley, M ike

    Taggert, Wayne Alan, Buddy

Smith, and Louis Meyer. Questions covered many areas

relate to performing magic. Manyquestions were discussed in depth.

The following are just some of the

    highlights.One person asked how to

overcome anxiety or shakinghands while performing card

tricks. Several members of the panel gave suggestions. Most all

    performers have a

    certain amount ofnervousness before a

    performance. Overtime you may

overcome some of this but not all.

Mainly practice and build yourconfidence in the effect you are

performing. You can always usethe gag line from Hugh Turley ,

My hands a shaking because Ilearned this trick in Minnesota.

Al Cohen once said: Just tellthem a story that you just got offthe plane from Alaska, and you

are still recovering....Another person said he

occasionally would like toperform using a stage illusion like

    a sub-trunk or Zig-Zag but doesnt

have the resources for building, buying or storing

    one. Is thereanything set-up

for renting onein the DC area?Renting an

illusion is not practical as you

would need to rent it for severaldays to become intimately familiarwith its workings, problem areas,

    and presentation.

In the December meeting of theCounts of Conjuring, ChiefWizard, Theo Rushin, took ouryoung members on a magical (andimaginary) trip to a desertedisland. They soon found that theisland was inhabited by nastynatives that wanted to boil themalive. Fortunately they discoveredthat the natives loved magic. Sothey put them to a challenge in

order to give them each a chanceto live. Each member was given aclue that described one of sixfamous magicians. Hiddensomewhere in the room were 6items associated with thosemagicians. Our young magicianshad to read the clue, discover whothe magician was and find theitem that was associated with thatmagician. Fortunately all of ourmagicians found their items and

the natives gave each of them a bag full of magic tricks. HappyHolidays Young Counts!

BBBuuuffffffeeetttWe have had a very good

relationship with the Managementof the Holiday Inn. They give usthe meeting room free in return forour members eating at the

Eisenhower Station Restaurant inthe hotel. Therestaurant

justifiably expectsthose to whom itgives meetingspace to USE itsdining facilities.

Over the lastfew months hotelmanagement has noted the Ring50 attendance at the dining room

has dwindled. This may jeopardize our relationship for thefree meeting room. The people atthe Holiday Inn have been morethan courteous to us. Members areencouraged to make a concertedeffort to eat dinner at theRestaurant. So come to themeeting at 6:30, have a nice mealin the dining room, chat with theother members, and then attendthe Ring 50 meeting.

    MMeemmbbeerrsshhiippHave YOU

brought aprospectivemember to themeeting? They must be interestedin magic and be a member of theInternational Brotherhood ofMagicians. Applications areavailable from the Treasurer, Bob

Wayne Alan says the cost may be prohibitive

and could start at a minimum of $500 a day, depending on the illusion. Illusions are very costlyand the owner wants a good return on hisinvestment. If you want to do illusions you willneed to scrimp and save to buy one, or build one.Wayne Alan is probably the only person in the DCarea that has the capability to rent illusions, but be

prepared to pay the costs. How would you perfect the classic palm for

coins without having to walk around with the coinin your hand all day? There is no way. If you want

to be the best you will need to

practice continually palmingthe coins and developing thecorrect muscles in the palm toaccomplish the perfect classic

palm. Buddy Smith who has awealth of knowledge on coin

magic says Fred Kaps practiced with fifty cent sizecoins from the time the alarm went off in themorning until the lights were off when he went to

    bed.Another question concerned turning

professional and performing Childrens shows in

the DC area and how much should be charged for30 to 45 minutes at the customers house? Shouldthe cost of travelling to/from the customers house

be added? Hugh Turley , Louis Meyer, and DickChristian weighed in on this question with somevaluable experience. Depending on your skill level

begin by charging slightly lessthan you think you are worthfor your very professional andquality performance. If you geta lot of phone calls, start raisingyour price. Remember your

price should make sense to the client and not beconfusing. If you want travel costs, include it inyour quote to the client as a total cost, not an add-on.

Another question involved describing a methodfor getting one's website to appear in the top tendisplays after a Google search. Mike Taggert gave

some excellent tipson the use of tags, keywords, and

presentation. Louis Meyer gave an outstandingdescription of the method Google uses to

determine what websites get to the top of the list. From these answers the audience had a much

clearer understanding of how to design theirwebsites for Google.

How do I sell an effect I invented? WayneAlan and Dick Christian had some interestingexperiences to share with the audience.

Manufacturing and marketing canbe very expensive. Be sure you havesomething new to sell, somethingthat is not already out there.Something that is your own notsomeones with your modifications.Advertise in magic magazines, orinternet magic sites. Have it reviewed by the majormagic magazines. You could send it to a dealer andexpect to pay him 40% of the selling price. Send itto a jobber, like Murphys, and expect to pay 60%of the selling price.

Other than fanning powder, is there anythingthat can be used to refresh old cards; specifically

packet tricks that are no longer made. Someonetold me to rub them with fresh bread,

but does that really work?Buddysays Eat the bread. It would be

better to buy fresh new cards orgimmick cards. However, fanning

powder will work. Place the cards ina paper bag along with the fanning

powder shake them up. Wipe excesspowder off the cards. You can have custom printed

gaff cards made by designing your own from CardShark.

What do you feel is the best card trick to perform close-up that will take less than oneminute when someone asksyou to do a trick? HughTurley commented the Threecard monte (with the flap card)is easy to do and easy to carryaround. Instant reset. Thereare lots of other packet tricksavailable that take around a minute to accomplish.

You might also try The Molecular Card.Next question was: How does Kreskin find his

check at the end of each performance he gives? Itis believed that Kreskin uses Contact Mindreading,

sometimes calledMuscle Reading. When correctlyexecuted, its theclosest thing to realmindreading you canget. Muscle reading(also known as

After 45 minutes from surgeryshe was already breathing alone without help frommachines, tubes, etc. Amazing. Please bear with

me at this time and keep Rachel and myself in yourthoughts and prayers.Love to all, Aldo

Nov 24As of last evening she was sitting up in the

intensive care section and doing well.Nov 25

More great news Rachel is up and walking sothe doctors might let her leave the hospital onSaturday but she did say it feels like a truck hit her.Thank you for your prayers and donationsDec 6

For some great news Rachel and Aldo are backin Florida and her health is looking positive.www.Magic4miracles.com has raised $21,000from all the magicians around the world towardsthe $200,000 for the total hospital bill.

Found in the January 1992 Magi -GramHugh Turley made us laugh as he always does.Where does he get those knock-knock jokes? I

believe Hugh could be the joke writer for Myweekly Reader. Hugh had all ages giggling.Ken Norris went totally off base with theintroduction of The Man O Mystery (Dr.Chang, where are you?) What followed wereversions of Torn & Restored Card, Rings,

Newspaper Restoration, and the ever popularString O Mystery. A piece of string was lit by astubborn match. Dont blink or you will miss it 12 seconds later the string suddenly (?) wastransformed to a silk scarf.

Found in the February 1992 Magi -Gram

Al Cohen opened reading a newspaper being heldby both hands but whoops there was a third handdoing all kinds of weird things. He then told thestory of the lost wallet that was black, no red, nogreen. The production of a dove from a flaming

pan proved a disaster because the dove was overcooked. Going from elongated lady to Karrel Foxswrist tie, Al had the audience in knots. Eric Wolfdid the coloring book routine as he did as a kid.But now he is an adult and he showed the adultversion. Ooo, la, la. John Roberts, in character asElmer P. Suggins, an old West (by god) Virginian, gave a very informative lecture on where cowscome from. He had a cow training aid and wentthrough the nomenclature of the cow. To showwhere cows come from he produced a genuine cowegg. He explained that after 19 months in a

microwave the cow baby would puncture his wayout of the shell by using his horns.
