Ring 50’s March 2 nd  meeting was opened by President Arnie Fuoco. First order of business was to welcome a new member  Dave Mayer (69868R ) and to vote him into the Ring. Dave began performing in High School and progressed to regular performing while in the U.S. Military. After serving in the military, he went full time performing in schools, churches, and office part ies since 197 2. . uestions covered many areas relate to performing magic. Many questions were discussed in depth. The following are just some of the highlights. One person asked how to overcome anxiety or shaking hands while performing card tricks. Several members of the panel gave suggestions. Most all performers have a certain amount of nervousness before a performance. Over time you may overcome some of this but not all. Mainly practice and build your confidence in the effect you are performing. You can always use the gag line from Hugh Turley , “My hands a shaking because I learned this trick in Minnesota.” Al Cohen once said: “Just tell them a story that you just got off the plane from Alaska, and you are still recovering....Another person said he occasionally would like to perform using a stage illusion like Dave was a Vice Pres and President of SAM 148 in Elmhurst IL. The March meeting was Auction Night. Forty-eight members and guests attended the auction with 37 registered bidders. Auctioneers Dick Christian and Wayne Alan did a fantastic job demonstrating the live auction items and coaxing out the best dollar. Danny Selnick and Bob Patterson were the accountants, Louis Meyer helped with the bagging the winning bids. Reggie Rice contributed by putting the unsold items in a holding area. The drawback for the evening was there were too many items (142) in the Live Auction and the time ran past 11:00 PM. Overall the lucky bidders bought some great magic equipment, collectable magic, videos, and publications. In the Live Auction Louis Meyer walked away with a great deal on an Abbott’s Botania (seen above). Avi Littky was the lucky winner on a Voice Amplifier. Greg Clements acquired a dancing cane at a very reasonable price of $30. After some spirited bidding Sylvia Lett was the top winner for a Boy to Rabbit illusion with a bid of $115. Ed Kaczka was the top bidder and walked off with a Disappearing Cane and Louis Meyer found an appearing cane that he liked. Tom Bohacek didn’t go hungry, he won a Peanut Butter and Jelly set. A Deluxe Handle Style Change Bag was another piece of magic that drew a lot of bids but was won by Louis Meyer for only $40.  The Silent Auction had many great deals on magic items. Mike Wolfson was the high bidder for a set of cups and balls. Wayne Alan introduces his brandnew lecture to the magic world. Itis called The Secret Formula for

Success in Magic-1/3 Talent, 1/3

Publicity and 1/3 Marketing . It isbased on a proven show businessformula.

Alan is a world-class illusionistand the only American to win theprestigious Gold Medal for Grande Illusion at FISM, the

World Championships of Magic. He has performed throughout theU.S., Europe, and Australia. Alanis the first magician to write acookbook, Magical Meatless

Meals Cookbook-Famous Foodsfrom Famous People and Places. He has acted as a consultant for David Copperfield and hasperformed on the national TVprograms of  Entertainment Tonight, MTV, Good Morning

America, ABC, NBC and CBS Network News programs. Hisappearances include those withOprah Winfrey, Larry King,Maury Povich and he recentlymagically produced Will Smith onBroadway for MTV. His corporateclients are a who’s who of Fortune 500 companies includingIBM, Avis Rent a Car, ITT,BB&T Bank, NCR and RockwellInternational. Alan has had the

honor of appearing thirteen timesat the White House.

Although Alan is well knownin the markets that he performs in,except for winning the GoldMedal for Grande Illusion atFISM in 1982, for years he hasmade an effort to stay under theradar in the magic field. He hasonly appeared on the cover of onemajor magic magazine, The

Linking Ring . After 38 years of

being a fulltime pro he hasdecided it is time that he gives alittle back to the profession thathas given him so much.

Most magicians forget thatshow business is two words andthat the word "business" is longer than the word "show". Unlike themajority of magic lectures, thebusiness side of magic is not

ignored but it is embraced in this

presentation.The lecture is packed with

strong and funny commercialmagic. Some of the featuresinclude:►Top 10 things To Do to be asuccessful magician and developinto a Magical Star ► Top 10 things NOT To Do tobe a top successful magician anddevelop into a Magical Star ► 13 sure fire ways to get greatpublicity and become a magiccelebrity in your area► 13 commercial close-up, stand-up and stage tricks/routines(including an illusion) including:♦ Five commercial close-uproutines/tricks-One routine is anoriginal silver dollar routine thatwas inspired by the great AlGoshman and developed by Alanwith the help of Derek Dingle andScotty York. Alan has performedthese routines thousands of timesat trade shows and other corporateand private events. OthersInclude: It’s Not Your Card It’sMine, Bar Magic Chop Cup, RealSilver-Rarely seen bare handsilver dollar production inspiredby the great Tony Slydini, MyCard Sir simple yet strongbusiness card production♦ Seven stand-up routines/tricks-some for adults and the others are

kid and family friendly. Harry theHare, a puppet who thinks he'salive, is direct from Alan’spopular kid show. The kids arescreaming with delight by therabbit’s surprise appearance and

antics. William Tell and HisApples, Mind Reading Spectator,An Opener with a Bang, TheBeads are Alive Ending, ComedyMind Reading Routine, TheDynamite 20 Item MemorySystem.♦ PLUS -A 3-Card Monte Illusion. It starts as a close-up card trick and ends as an illusion. It is easyto make, costs under $300, andwill fit in the back seat of your

car. It will surprise and probablyfool magicians and blow layaudiences away.

Thanks to everyone whohelped with the auction. I think

next year we are going tostreamline it a bit more by limitingthe number of items from oneseller for the Live Auction. Also, for those who wish to leave beforethe end of the regular auction andsettle on the silent auction, we willhave someone available to settleafter 9:30 PM. We get to relaxnext month because we will havea lecture by Wayne Alan, one of the best in our art. But start

practicing those routines now for the Dan Lacey contest on May

4th. See you at dinner on April 6th.

relationship with the Managementof the Holiday Inn. They give usthe meeting room free in return for

our members eating at theEisenhower Station Restaurant inthe hotel. The restaurantjustifiably expects those to whomit gives meeting space to USE itsdining facilities.

Over the last few months hotelmanagement has noted the Ring50 attendance at the dining roomhas dwindled. This mayjeopardize our relationship for thefree meeting room. The people atthe Holiday Inn have been morethan courteous to us. Members areencouraged to make a concertedeffort to eat dinner at theRestaurant. So come to themeeting at 6:30, have a nice meal
