Ring 50 Teach-in is a Success!!
January Meeting Highlights
President Danny Selnick was in
California, so Arnold Fuoco opened
the meeting with 35 members and
guests attending.
One new member, Con Ward was
voted into Ring 50 (see page 4).
The 50/50 drawing was won by
lucky Bob Greenwald.
Greg Clements reminded us
about Magi-Whirl April 1 & 2 and to
be sure to register early to save
money. He is looking for volunteers
to help at the various functions. So if
you want to help, contact Greg at:
Larry Lipman announced the
January 20th SAM Assembly 23
meeting will be held at the Press
Club, 7:00 dinner and 8:00 PM
meeting.
Then Arnold Fuoco turned the
program over to the Teach-in group.
The ‘Stars of Magic’ Teach-in
presented a close-up educational
evening to enhance our Art of
Magic. The four lecturers presented
a bit of related magic history,
techniques, and then taught a two or
three ticks. Each of the lectures
lasted about 20 minutes. Like a
carnival side show when the
performer finished he moved to the
next group. The teach-in provided a
wonderful forum in which the
members were invited to ask
questions, or give their thoughts on
variations and performance
suggestions. The group divided up
and there were about 12 observers at
each of the 4 tables. The Ring 50
instructors were: Augie Arnstein,
Arnold Fuoco, Bob Patterson, and
John Roberts.
Ring 50 Teach-in
Augie Arnstein explains the no gimmick
mental epic.
Augie Arnstein using the game
of Clue, Augie taught us how to
predict the room in the English
Manor house, the weapon used and -
of course - the character that
committed the murder. Augie then
explained the multiple facets of this
routine. First using the No Gimmick
Mental Epic (from Dave Lederman)
and then explaining multiple ways to
determine the last prediction (Who
Done It). The notes he provided
included a table that provided highly
useful information when doing a
down and under deal. Augie also
was able to demonstrate (at several
tables) a Mental Epic Pad described
in a book by Tony Binarelli.

Ring 50 Teach-in (continued from page 1)
Arnold Fuoco showing palming
techniques.
Arnold Fuoco taught some basic
coin sleights and followed each
sleight with a magic effect applying
that sleight. He started out with a
finger palm and Ramsey subtlety
and these were applied in a coins to
pocket routine. The thumb palm
followed and the Crossing Coins of
India routine was performed to show
this slight. Next was the classic palm
and shuttle pass. David Roth's
Winged Silver demonstrated these
slights in a coins across routine.
Finally, Arnold performed the only
self-working coin effect he knew. It
used a dollar coin and a reappearing
penny.
Bob Patterson teaching “Numbers”.
Bob Patterson, the great
magician, borrowed a shuffled deck
and put one card aside as a
prediction of things to come. He
shuffled the cards and had a
spectator choose any number
between 10 and 20. This lead to a
random selection of another card
which turned out to be the same
color and number of the prediction
card. Wow! Finally, the top cards of
the two remaining piles are turned
over. They are the other two mates
(four of a kind)! He explained this is
a great impromptu effect using any
deck.
Now that four cards were found,
Bob taught us a routine based on
Kuniyasu Fujiwara’s “Automatic
Ace Triumph” (From Awesome Self
Working Card Tricks by Big Blind
Media). This was a mini Triumph
routine with the four aces that was
easy to perform and mind boggling.
He started with 4 aces or any 4 of a
kind face up on the table. Then he
covered them with 3 cards on each
ace. From the 4 piles he made two
small packets with 6 face down
cards and 2 face up aces. He turned
one packet over and combined the
two packets by alternating the cards
on the table one at a time. Left card,
then a right card, left card, then a
right card, repeating until he had a
bunch of cards some face-up some
face down. After mixing, dealing,
twisting and turning, the four aces
all turn face up while the rest of the
select handful of cards turn face
down. It was very fooling and
completely impromptu. It is a packet
trick that can be performed with any
deck.
John Roberts taught two card
effects. The first was a “Memorized
Deck” routine. A spectator was
asked to select a card from a
shuffled deck as John riffled through
the cards. John then scanned the
faces of the cards and, after turning
the cards face down, asked the
spectator for the name of the card.
John then asked the spectator to
count to the 20th card, where the
selected card was to be found.
For John’s second effect,
“Invisible Card Across,” a first
spectator was asked to count 12
cards, face down, into John’s hand.
John then showed the spectator each
of the first six cards of the twelve
cards and asked him to think of one
of them. He handed the packet of six
cards to the first spectator, and then
counted the remaining six cards into
the hand of a second spectator.
John Roberts explaining “Invisible Card
Across”.
After a bit of magical gesticulation,
John asked the first spectator to
count the cards that he was holding
(only five!) and then to name the
thought of card. John then asked the
second spectator to count the cards
that he was holding (seven!), and
then to check if the thought of card
was in his packet. It was!
The instructors gave references
or distributed hand-outs for those
attending the Teach-in. Many thanks
to teachers Augie, Arnold, Bob and
John for a great night of magic
instruction and education!
Al Albers’
Card Routine
Just wanted to pass the word to
Ring 50 members that a card routine
– my adaptation of Aldo
Colombini’s “Wichita Deal” – is in
this month’s issue of The Magic
Roadshow #172. I hope everyone
will check it out and give it a try.

Glen Gary begins Chemotherapy
Glen Gary former member of
Ring 50 moved to Florida and
opened the Cabaret of Magic.
However his health has curtailed his
activities. Here is a note from his
Face Book.
“Hello friends, sorry I have not
been on FB for a while now. If you
follow Cabaret of Magic, you know
that I closed the theater in August as
the lease was up for renewal and I
was the caregiver for my sister for
about five months. While taking care
of my sister in the hospital I got sick
myself and was hospitalized in July
and September.
While being tested in September
they discovered that my cancer had
returned and spread to both lungs
and lymph nodes. I am starting
Chemotherapy on January 4th but
they only expect that to give me
another 9 to 11 months, otherwise I
would only have 3 to 5.
During the time I have left I
would like to sell my magic estate
including 50 chairs, lighting, sound,
curtains, curtain frames, store
inventory, 3 Vent figures, illusions,
books, Videos & DVDs, posters, and
of course props and tricks. If anyone
wants to open a small theater I have
everything you need.
I will try to get a price list
together or make an offer for
something you want. Let me know
what you want and I will tell you if I
have it. Any dove workers out there?
I have a lot of dove magic including
Proline Vanishing Cage.” Glen’s

Penn Jillette’s Weight Loss is More Than Magic
(from USA Today)
Penn Jillette, the talking member
of the magical duo Penn and Teller,
says losing more than 100 pounds
was a lot like doing magic. It was
hard work. Jillette
lost one-third of his
body weight over
three months in late
2014-early 2015
and says he feels
much better now
that he carries 228
pounds on his 6-
foot-7 frame. He
knows he lost the
weight faster than
most doctors recommend. He has
kept it off for more than 10 months.
He knows he is at risk of regaining
the pounds. But Jillette believes he’ll
beat the odds, because he has
completely transformed the way he
eats.
The biggest difference is that he
no longer eats like an American.
Now, he says, he forgoes pizza,
cheeseburgers and other processed
food and doesn’t miss them at all.
He’s writing about his success in
a book due out next fall called
Presto: How I made over 100
pounds Magically Disappear.

Happy New Year everyone and
let's hope that 2016 will be full of
health, happiness, family and of
course - great magic!
I was sad to have missed last
week's "Teach-in" because it's always
such a great event and I'd like to
thank our four fabulous teachers --
Bob Patterson, John Roberts, Augie
Arnstein and Arnold Fuoco.
February's meeting is Open
Magic Night where members can
perform their favorite under five-
minute trick. I hope to see a lot of
performers -- especially our newer
members or those of us who haven't
performed in a long time. Nothing to
get nervous about, we're family. So
come on and have fun.
Magi-Whirl 2016 is right
around the corner and while our all-
star line-up of world-famous
magicians and lecturers is all set, we
all need to begin getting the word out
to area magicians and the public.
This year's show needs to be a sell-
out so we can budget for an even
more magnificent Magi-Whirl 2017.
I could use one social media expert
to help get the word out. Please write
to me at [email protected]
if you're interested. Remember, this
amazing event doesn't happen by
itself AND all we need is a few hours
of your time.
Magically yours
Danny
