1-800-344-4867 (1-800-FIGHT-MS).

Vibrant 33-year-old Kristen Henry has a zest for life and unflappable determination. She approaches everything in life with tenacity and resolve, and her fight against multiple sclerosis has been no different.

In July 2008, Kristen, a personal trainer, was working with a client when she seemingly pulled a muscle in her back. However, the pain became increasingly intense and in two days time she couldn’t feel her feet. Kristen’s new symptoms prompted her doctor to send her to the emergency room, where after a week of tests she was diagnosed with MS.

Kristen’s symptoms increased during the next few weeks with numbness and tingling from her chest down, preventing her from

walking, driving and doing the job she loved, when just a year prior she had been competing in triathlons. However, similar to how Kristen's clients use determination to reach their fitness goals, Kristen uses her resolve to reach her life goals and live with MS. Says Kristen, “I was determined to get better. I wasn’t going to let MS stop me from what I wanted to do with my life.”

With the help of the Pacific South Coast Chapter, Kristen connected with a physical therapist and started targeted physical therapy three times a week. As a result, she started working again soon after her diagnosis. Her mom would drive her to and from work

and Kristen would coach her clients while leaning on her cane or sitting down. And, before becoming pregnant in early 2009, Kristen got to the point where she was able to run on the treadmill – an amazing accomplishment.

For Walk MS 2009, Kristen started Kristen’s Krew in record time, recruiting 12 people and raising almost $4,500. This year, the team has expanded to 18 members made up of Kristen’s close friends and family.

“The MS Society has done so much to help me and others with MS reclaim our lives. I encourage everyone to participate in or contribute to the Walk.”
