TEAM CAPTAIN OPPORTUNITIES

Create a Team Name: Pick a name that identifies yourorganization or group. This is how you will be recognizedthroughout the Walk MS. Be sure that each teammember knows this name and registers under the exactsame spelling of the name — it is the only way account-ing and data entry will be able to properly credit yourteam’s participation and fundraising achievements.

Register First as Team Captain: The first person to reg-ister the team name is automatically designated as theteam captain. Eliminate any confusion for your teammembers by registering yourself first. Keep in mind that itmay be helpful to assign co-captains to assist in yourteam’s efforts.

Register Your Team: Each team member must registerindividually. Please list your team name and team cap-tain on all forms. Remind all team members the impor-tance of providing individual contact information asinformation regarding the Walk MS is sent to each teammember via mail and email leading up to the Walk.

Set Your Goals: Set recruitment and fundraising goals, and start early! The sooner you start the more walkersyou will recruit and the more time they will have to raisefunds. Encourage your team members to set an individ-ual fundraising goal, and to keep track of their progressin reaching that goal.

Recruit Your Team: Tell anyone and everyone aboutyour team.

Promote Your Team: Ask people to join the team, vol-unteer, or donate to a team member. Be persistent!

Fundraise: First and foremost, the Walk MS is afundraising event to support all the research, pro-grams and services provided by the National MSSociety. Make sure they know above all else, this ismore than just a Walk to raise awareness. Each teammember is individually responsible for collecting andturning in money, but the advantage of walking on ateam is that you can work as a team to collect funds.

NOTE: There is a cost to the National MS Society for everyperson who registers to walk. So the society actuallyLOSES money when someone registers and does not raisemoney. Do your part to help by encouraging each teammember to raise dollars.

Hold Special Events: The success of a team can beincreased by holding special events to enhance yourteam’s efforts. Such events include team fundraisingevents (auction, company bake sale, MS Night Out) andteam recruitment events (registration party, kickoff get-together, wrap-up party). The National MS Society cansupply you with ideas and suggestions for how to con-duct them.

Keep Careful Records: Keep lists of who has regis-tered and shown interest in your team. Include phonenumbers, addresses, e-mail addresses, associations, and the date they joined the team. This will assist incommunicating properly with your team members and inrecruiting them again next year! The NMSS office canprovide you with periodic up-to-date team rosters, oryou can keep track on your own by utilizing the onlinetracking tools provides to team captains in the MyParticipant Center.

Communicate: As a team captain, you are the liaisonbetween your team and the National MS Society. Yourteam members will receive some direct Walk MS com-munication from the National MS Society. However, it isimportant that you reiterate any information given toyour team on the Walk MS or any additional informationyou may receive as a Team Captain, such as proceduresfor registering and turning in money, and what to expecton Walk Day.

Motivate Your Team: The Walk MS is a fun event, butthere are things you can do as a team captain to makeit even better for your team. Recognize and reward teammembers that go above and beyond. Send encouraginge-mails and make sure your team understands the causebehind the Walk. Have Fun!

The local chapter provides client programs to 8,500Georgians seeking services from the National MultipleSclerosis Society.

Use membership into theMission Possible Club as afundraising incentive withyour team members. Set agoal to have at least one (ormore) team members toearn a spot in this presti-gious club.

The National MS Society, Georgia Chapter has an exclu-sive club called the Top 100 Club. The Top 100 Club iscomprised of the top 100 fundraisers from the previousyears’ Walk. It is a one year membership, which pro-vides you with special benefits exclusive to club mem-bers. NOTE: Top 100 Club ranking will be based onpledges turned in by September 30, 2008.

Recognize team members that may be current Top 100Club members and encourage others to find out howthey did it. Also, highlight team members that are cur-rently in the running to be a Top 100 Club member in2008. Friendly competition is a healthy way to encour-age fundraising.

Unpredictable. That is the essence of the mysterious, disabling disease known as multiple sclerosis (MS). Younever know when MS will strike. You never know whatthe symptoms will be or how long they will last.

Because some people affected by MS are unable towalk in the Walk MS, the National MS Society hasestablished Champions Against MS. This programallows Walk participants to walk on behalf of someonewith MS. Clients are encouraged to write inspirationalmessages on bright color bandanas which walkers thentake with them on the Walk. We further encourage contact between champion and walker.

Participate as a team in thisrewarding program by encourag-ing your team members to sign upto walk for a Champion. Walk asa team for someone you know. Ifyour team does not know some-one with MS, the ChampionsAgainst MS program will pair your team members withone of our clients served by the National MS Society.Give someone a reason to hope! TEAM RECRUITING TIPS

Page 10: 2008 Walk MS Team Captain Manual

THE BASICS:Have enthusiasm! Excitement is highly contagious andit is important for your team members to feel how enthu-siastic you are about fundraising.

Show commitment! When you raise funds, you aredirectly helping people with MS by funding importantresearch about this unpredictable disease. Make the firstpledge yourself. When your team members (and potentialdonors) see your name and a contribution, they will seehow serious you are.

Share with the group! As you conduct fundraising, share your methods with your team members. By sharingyour mail/email campaigns and personal fundraisingevents, team members will become more comfortablewith fundraising for themselves.

Set Goals! Set a team fundraising goal and regularlyannounce the team’s progress through email, on theteam webpage, and in company email/newsletters.Utilize the Team Goal Setting section of this manual tohelp set goals.

Garner Company Support! Ask your company to pro-vide financial help; i.e., pay for team t-shirts, financialcontribution to the team, host a fundraising day, etc.Don’t forget about vendors that your company patronizes— they want to maintain that friendly “business relation-ship” and are generally more than willing to contribute.

Ask for Help! Identify a team member to serve as co-captain, or a group of members to serve as a team com-mittee. Ask for help in putting together one or more teamfundraising events. Delegate responsibilities!

Double your pledges! Ask the HR department if yourcompany has a matching gift program. Have forms avail-able when you approach your co-workers as each of theirpledges to you will be matched by your employer! Don’tforget to inform co-workers who are also teammatesabout this opportunity. Just by informing them of this, youcould double, maybe even triple your team’s contributions.

GOING THE EXTRA MILE:

The following are team fundraising ideas from veteran teamcaptains. Go the extra mile with your team by getting cre-ative and utilizing the resources of your own team members.

Do something Unusual! Shave your head, sing karaoke,or wear a strange costume all day if your team exceeds itsfundraising goal. To motivate company members, ask thecompany president or executives to do the same.

Hold a Drawing! For every $50 raised, team membersearn a chance to win a prize such as a special home-cooked meal or a paid day off.

Sell something! Hold a team garage sale, bake sale, orsilent auction. Provide breakfast/lunch at your office inexchange for a team donation. Hold a company-wide auc-tion and have team members auction off services such as ahome-cooked meal, four hours of yard work, or a carwash.

Recognize Top Fundraisers! Recognize top teamfundraisers (pre-set an amount) by providing free dinneror a reserved parking spot for a month. Be sure to includethe name of those team members that are close toreaching the “Top Fundraiser” status in regular emails toyour team as encouragement to reach the next level.

Get Team Sponsors! Ask businesses to sponsor yourteam in exchange for free publicity. Include sponsor logoson team t-shirts and in a sponsor highlights section ofyour team emails/webpage. Ask your favorite restaurantor bar to donate a percentage of one evening’s income toyour team in return for sponsorship privileges. Ask a localband to play for free and sell raffle tickets for great prizes.

Have a Themed Party! For a donation, throw a party!Have a denim & diamonds dinner, a pirate’s treasure hunt,or a holiday soirée. Hold a fancy themed dinner party inconjunction with a televised awards show. Dress it up byholding the party at a local restaurant and provide eachguest with the name of an award nominee with prizes forthose whose celebrity wins.

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. Symptoms

may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe — paralysis or loss of vision. Most

people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, but the unpredictable physical

and emotional effects can be lifelong. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is dedicated to

advancing the cure, prevention and treatment of MS, and to improving the lives of those

affected by the disease.

However, each Walk par-ticipant is individually responsible for collecting andturning in money. NOTE: There is a cost to theNational MS Society for every person who regis-ters to walk. ABOUT MULTIPLE SCLEROSISMultiple Sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. The symptoms includeblurred or double vision, and numbness or tingling of the limbs which can become as severe as total loss of visionor paralysis. Diagnosis usually occurs between the ages of 20 and 50, disproportionately affects women by a 2:1ratio, and is most common in persons with Northern European ancestry. While multiple sclerosis is not a fatal dis-ease, it offers no “protection” from any other disease whose likelihood is increased with age, heredity or lifestyle. The unpredictable physical and emotional effects are lifelong. The progress, severity, and specific symptoms ofMS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are giving hope to thoseaffected by the disease. The National MS Society recommends that people living with MS work with their physi-cians/neurologists to begin and maintain an appropriate course of drug therapy to manage their symptoms andlessen the severity of relapses. For more information about MS go to www.nationalmssociety.org.

THE MISSION OF THE NATIONAL MS SOCIETYThe National Multiple Sclerosis Society is a collective of passionate individuals who want to do something aboutMS now — to move together towards a world free from multiple sclerosis. The National Multiple Sclerosis Societyis working to accomplish this mission through a nationwide network of chapters that serve more people with MSand fund more MS research than any other voluntary organization in the world. In addition, the National MultipleSclerosis Society is the only national voluntary MS organization that meets the standards of all major agencies thatrate the fiscal responsibility of non-profit groups. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is proud to be a source ofinformation about MS. Please call us at: 678-672-1000/ 800-FIGHTMS for information and referral on any MSrelated issue. Our comments are based on professional advice, published experience, and expert opinion, but wedo not represent individual therapeutic recommendation or prescription. For specific information and advice, pleaseconsult your personal physician/neurologist.
