Annual Report 2011/2012

Dear friends

Welcome to this year’s annual report which we hope you will find enjoyable and enlightening.

This past year has had its successes and challenges. Measured growth, based on client need, has contributed to CLASS being well positioned for the changes the disability sector will be undertaking over the next few years. CLASS has a stronger structure, with a good mix of growth with direct support staff as well as administration and management. CLASS supports over 400 clients & currently employs approximately 170 staff.

We have focussed on the way we support clients, moving to more formal ways of supporting them through measured person centred services. We are also improving how we support clients who respond to their environment very assertively. Staff has a better understanding of clients so they can understand frustrations and provide a range of options that the client feels more comfortable with.

CLASS has also seen some staff changes which reflect the cultural changes of the Organisation. We welcomed some newly created positions which will assist the Teams to have better planning ability for individual client needs, with the goal to ensuring a higher quality of service.

While recruiting staff we have moved to a ‘values based recruitment’ process with clients on the panel offering clear direction of which the best person they consider might fulfill a particular job. Employees who can offer quality client focused support in line with the values of CLASS will be recognised and rewarded.

During the year the Client Advisory Group has grown in confidence to the point where the Group is giving suggestions to Local and State Government on policy affecting people with disabilities. The Group has developed easy to read documents on client feedback, information on client’s rights and has plans for a walkathon fundraising event.

It was very pleasing to see new accommodation services being developed in the South Coast area for some people who were in dire need for somewhere to live. As announced last year, new services on Kangaroo Island include Respite and Day Option Services. The new Day Option venue in Goolwa, situated closer to where clients live, was recently opened by the Minister for Disabilities, The Honourable Ian Hunter MP.

It is with sadness that we advise you we lost one of our valued Board members, Jim Kidd, who passed away unexpectedly late last year. Jim, through his enthusiastic participation on the Board was able to give the Organisation strategic advice and perspective from a person living with a disability. Jim worked very hard with the Client Advisory Group and developed a structure where clients felt eager as well as empowered to speak up on issues that affected not just their lives but those of their peers as well.

At the end of this corporate year we will lose a long term Board member who has decided to retire from the Board. Brian East who over the years has given CLASS great service with particular emphasis in governance and direction on quality improvement and strategic planning. Over the last 4 years Brian was the Chairman of the Service Improvement sub-committee.

CLASS remains in a strong financial position with a small surplus due to fundraising and prudent

expenditure. Assets include vehicles and the only property service providers can own is the head office building. A bitter sweet announcement is that the building is now paid for but through expanded services leading to growth in management and administration support we are out growing this building and are looking for additional office accommodation.

Government announcements this year for people with disabilities included; South Australia’s commitment to individualised funding and self managed funds and the National Disability Insurance Scheme. Strategically CLASS needs to be ready for these changes as services will become market driven and Clients will have the opportunity to direct services to better suit their needs. One key area of challenge will be funding for group programs where clients share staff. This will lead to the need for clients to compromise and negotiate with each other. In the past, clients have had less say on where they live and who they live with as funders and service providers had heavy influence over them.

CLASS has been a partner in an innovative program with Learning Potential to provide certificate courses to people with disabilities to start their own businesses. Some really innovative ideas are coming through. These are highlighted later in the report.

We wish to thank all clients, family members, volunteers, community supporters and funders for your dedicated support to CLASS over the year.

Without you we would not be here to support the community, your passion helps CLASS overcome any and all barriers. We particularly want to thank our dedicated & professional staff for your commitment to making the lives of our clients easier & enabling them to fulfill their personal goals and going that extra mile when needed, well done and be aware that you are appreciated.

CLASS is very fortunate to have a strong Board which successfully provides good governance and strategic direction. This strength comes through the membership’s experience and expertise from a diverse range of backgrounds. Thank you for your time and energy.

In the coming year CLASS will continue to look at ways we can improve by providing professional services that meet client’s needs. As a key to improvement, CLASS has developed client feedback mechanisms, but wishes to improve ways to engage with families. We welcome your input and look forward to seeing family members at the family forums throughout the year.

In the coming year we will be further preparing for the NDIS and the massive change this will inspire.

We trust that you will enjoy some of our stories in the following pages of this annual report.

Rex Keily AM, JP Mark Kulinski

Chairman of the Board Chief Executive

This year’s AGM brings our Chairman Rex Keily’s term on the Board to an end. Rex’s dedication has seen CLASS grow from a small vulnerable Organisation to one that has embraced professionalism and growth to become one of the leading disability support organisations in South Australia. During Rex’s tenure he has chaired the Board, the Marketing & Strategic Planning sub-committee and the Business & Finance sub-committee. Rex has led the Board and sub-committees to focus on organisational governance and strategic direction facilitating a clear role difference with management but still overall accountability.

On behalf of the Board, Management, Staff, Volunteers, Clients and Families we thank Rex for his strong leadership and support to the organisation.

I am pleased to announce that although Rex will no longer be part of the Board he will continue to support CLASS as a sub-committee member of the Marketing & Strategic Planning Committee.

Annual Report 2011/2012

Sharon bursts in and says “Pat! Pat! I can’t wait to tell the boss her team lost against the crows on Saturday. I can’t wait to stir her up!” Sharon chuckles away heartily and puts her hand up for a high five and Pat and her have a giggle together.

Becky yells out, “all jobs done, 5 minutes iPod Pat?” Pat goes off to the office to find Bec’s iPod for her. “Here is your iPod Bec”. Beck jumps up to grab it. “Thanks Pat”, she exclaims.

All of the girls have had a great morning and are just finishing off their cuppas while watching Kochie on Sunrise and then Eileen calls out, “you girls ready to catch the bus”. The girls pipe in “Yes Eileen” and head to the door ready for a day out and about in their community.

Pat was just quietly and quickly getting ready for the morning routine when Bec walks thru the door, “Good morning Pat” she says as she grabs Pat’s glasses off the bookshelf sneakily with a giggle and continues on her way through her routine.

“Scuse me Pat, good morning Pat. Look what I’m gonna wear today. OOOOh you like it?” Sandra asks. “You will look lovely in that!” replies Pat.

Walking on into the kitchen, Pat spots Monique emptying the dishwasher. Monique spots her too and says “I just finished my muffin with honey and am going to make a cup of tea. Would you like me to make you one too?” Monique is always considering others and enjoys making a cuppa for those she lives with. Pat was about to say “I’d love one” when

10:30amMyranth House,Strathalbyn

The guest book at Myranth House boasts comments such as “Comparable to any five star hotel.”

And if you ask regular guest Lucy, she whole-heartedly agrees! Lucy has been coming to Myranth House for six years. She has met lots of other guests over those years and made many new friends. Lucy commented that “the staff members are all great and I have met some nice people who have made a difference in my life. It has been an eye-opener for me the great support network here and how important it is”. Lucy enjoys getting out and about. She enjoys looking around the shops at Strathalbyn and Café Ruffino’s is a favourite! Lucy particularly enjoys her stays in the summer months and she loves the hot weather and the ability to be able to get outside. Lucy is pictured below with staff member Leonie, who has worked at Myranth House since its inception.

Tracey is staying at Myranth House for the first time. She has travelled from Mount Gambier and is staying for one month. Tracey comments that she is really enjoying her stay. So far she has been to the movies to see The Sapphires and appreciates the special effort that the team go to to cook her eggs and bacon for breakfast. Tracey’s favourite activity is going for a country drive if the weather is good and taking a picnic lunch. Tracey is pictured here with CLASS Volunteer Annie. Annie is a valuable volunteer, who spends many hours making friends with our guests and assisting respite staff in the many activities they do throughout the day.

Also in the Myranth House guest book is a wonderful poem from another regular guest, Vanessa. On Vanessa’s last visit, she entered her poem into the Callington Show, and was aptly awarded first prize! Thank you Vanessa for sharing your beautiful poem with us. In 2011/2012, the Respite Team managed 253 guest bookings. Bookings for 2012/2013 are filling fast and it comes as no surprise that bookings are already being made for 2014.

Myranth Houseby Vanessa Brown

Myranth House holds many memories

Sometimes that society never sees

The optimistic side of living without

Co-ordinated body or mind

Such is sometimes hard to find

A young man with an enduring smile

And he stops and talks to me for awhile

But the people out there don’t always know

The experience from inside which grows

Too concerned with what might be

Reflected in disability

11:30amDay Options,Southern Metro & South Coast

Day Options Drama Group affirms why it is the Year of the Dragon.

Bec beamed as she led her fellow Day Options friends on stage as the head of the dragon. The impressive red dragon weaved and danced onto the stage, the red velvet shimmering in time to the music.

It has been weeks of rehearsals and preparation for the drama performance including making the costumes. The glitter had been lovingly applied to the dragon head and each of the clients made their own masks for the “dragon walk” performance. After the dragon had finished its dance, the clients revealed themselves from under the dragon’s body. One by one each of the masked and caped performers did an individual dance along the cat-walk. Corey excitedly exclaimed, “it’s a dragon-walk, not a cat-walk!”

Drama teacher, Sebastian played the harmonica and guitar as the clients demonstrated their skills at

partner barn dancing. The venue was intimate allowing the audience to be close to the performers. The performance depicted a great collaboration of music, costume, dance, colour, laughter and fun.

Day Options Manager, Jenny Simpson commented that “the drama participants have really benefitted from the group in more ways than one. It has been incredibly rewarding to watch their confidence and self-esteem grow. This was evidenced by their recent drama performance which everyone participated in with enthusiasm and excitement!” Jenny attended the drama performance along with parents, families, staff and clients from other venues and added about the clients “I felt really proud of them all, what an achievement”. It seems very befitting then that the dragon is considered as a symbol of power and strength!

1:30pmRecreation Program,Murray-Lands group

The Amazing Race that had the Murray-Lands Recreation group on a fun adventure around the Barossa Valley.

“Come on Ben!” exclaims Kristy, “We need to find the next clue!” Whilst having lunch in Angaston, Ben stumbled across a Blacksmith store. An impromptu stop saw us having a great time looking around the Blacksmith’s museum. There were some very old and interesting pieces of equipment and we learnt how things were made in the old days and learnt what a forge is. Ben enjoyed it so much he got lost in there for nearly half an hour and we had to practically drag him out of there to get to our next clue.

The Murray-Lands Recreation group were participating in a new activity that Team Leader Shannon Burdett has introduced to their program. The program offers formal learning outcomes to the participants, but still maintain fun activities. So thinking

outside the square, the group are participating over the weekend in an “amazing race” style activity around the Barossa Valley. The group were split into two teams and each was given a set of clues to various places of interest around the Barossa Valley. At each point, the team had to find the answer to a question about the relevant product and/or take a photo of themselves in front of the venue or item to prove that they had found it.

As Ben finally steps into the van, Kathy reads the team their next clue: “She is the most famous beer that has never been bottled….She has a shop at her Farm that Master Chef fans love!” Kristy yells out “Maggie Beer” and the team make a bee line for Maggie Beer’s Farm Shop, whilst snacking on the dried fruit they had obtained from Angus Park earlier

in the day. Maybe they will pick up some more yummy treats from Maggie Beer’s Shop to have with their BBQ dinner tonight at Nuriootpa Caravan Park?

The clues saw the guys also visit Norm’s Coolies Performing Dogs, Angus Park Fruits, A winery beginning with the letter “L”, The Keg Factory, Lego Man, Mengler’s Hill Lookout and the Whispering Wall.

The Recreation Services Team plan and execute 12 Day Options and 10 Overnight Recreational Camps per financial year. Shannon has also introduced a new evaluation sheet for the clients to fill out at the end of each camp or day option program. This has been successful in empowering the participants so that they have input into what they would like to accomplish. Some comments from the evaluation sheets include, “Looking forward to the next camp”, “I like everything” and Shannon’s personal favourite from William when asked his favourite activity on camp? answers it with “eating lunch!”

2:30pmMicro-Business Course StrathalbynAfter a well-earned lunch break, the students are back at work on the computers in the Stathalbyn Community Library. Guy is searching the web for equipment he needs to operate his business, Guy’s Garden Care. Everyone has an important role to play, including Guy’s Mum, Mandy. Guy is teasing his Mum by googling different makes and models of chainsaws! Guy is looking to upgrade his lawn mower. CLASS partnered with training provider Learning Potential International Pty Ltd (LPI) in June to successfully apply for Government funding to deliver a Certificate III in Micro Business Operations.

It’s an exciting new initiative for people with a disability to explore self-employment options of setting up a micro or home-based business.

The Hon Kelly Vincent MLC has been a keen supporter from the start and will be at the final presentations. It is an innovative program that covers the skills of setting up a home-based business using a ‘person-centred, strengths based approach’ to deliver the program.

The program is being run in Strathalbyn, Victor Harbour and Adelaide for 30 participants from CLASS and the wider disability community. The courses are being conducted in 4 x 4 day blocks until December.

The outcomes and enthusiasm from participants has been great. A range of business ideas are being developed by participants from cleaning solar panels, making dog biscuits, house staging, screen printing T-shirts, answering service, iphone/ipad

CLASS & LPI are evaluating the breakthrough model for future initiatives towards providing self-employment options for people with a disability.

Business Coach Andrew Inglis commented that “the abilities of individuals are extraordinary and the course is building confidence, expanding networks and friendships and providing new skills and opportunities in self-employment”. CLASS and LPI are evaluating the breakthrough model for future initiatives and funding towards providing self-employment options for people with a disability in the sector.

A Fishy Business!

Tom Freebourne of Middleton gets the ‘thumbs up!’ from Graeme Kerkin, General Manager of Client Services at CLASS, to turn his hobby of making fishing rods and flies into a home-based fishing supplies business.

Thomas spends day and night fishing!!! and in his spare time making flies and rods.

Tom is using social media as a marketing tool.

DJ with a Difference

Matthew Nye of Mt Barker (pictured with Business Coach, Julie) has a talent as a DJ with his lighting and sound equipment and is keen to explore opportunities to provide entertainment for special events and celebrations.

Georgia, Matthew’s Guide Dog, also has an ear for music and will be an important part of his exciting new venture.

Off to market!

The team also undertake lessons on location and the group were fortunate enough to go on an industry visit to Adelaide Central Market and receive a behind the scenes tour to learn about micro businesses. George said it was “great fun and I learnt about budgeting, expenses, marketing and what’s involved in operating a market stall.”

George was keen to get on with tasting with Master Chef and Tour guide Mark Gleeson. George loves baking and he is set to make lots of four-legged friends with his recipes for his muzzle-watering dog treats!

upsetting if the other children on the bus are noisy and misbehaving, but Eryn is close at hand to offer some diversions such as sensory pressure on Luke’s hands and shoulders for when this occurs.

On arrival at Cygnet River, Luke and Eryn climb off the bus together and meet Luke’s mum Deb. Luke gives Eryn a high five to farewell her.“See you tomorrow Luke” says Eryn.Eryn will be ready to meet Luke again the next day for the ride back to school.

Deb says “it’s nice to know that Luke finally has a voice on the bus and we can relax knowing that Eryn helps him feel comfortable on the bus.”

Support Worker Eryn sets off to meet Luke in his class room at Kangaroo Island Community Education, Kingscote Campus. Eryn supports Luke on the school bus to school in the morning and again for the ride home in the afternoon.

Eryn keeps up as Luke skips, walks or runs with enthusiasm to the bus bay and eagerly climbs aboard the bus. Luke has his own seat in amongst the other kids on the bus and Eryn sits a couple of seats behind him. Luke likes to look out the bus window and play with his container of animal figurines on his way home and occasionally looks around to see Eryn offering him a reassuring smile.

Manager of Respite & Transitional Care, Karen Maidment-Longbottom commented “as a Manager, I feel great satisfaction, seeing people achieve and doing well, keeping in good health and knowing that individuals and families are happy. We are blessed having people like Andrea and Aileen come into our service.” Victor Harbor Guest House (or Les Sims as it was formerly known) in 2011/2012 has supported 5 people to move from transitional care into their own homes in their community. In addition, 8 clients received respite.

It’s been a big day out. Andrea puts the kettle on whilst one of the other girls switches on the air conditioning.

Day outings are a common feature of a stay at Victor Harbor Guest House. Today it was a visit to Adelaide Zoo to see the pandas, but guest Andrea comments “we have also been to the beach and to Kangaroo Island for the day!”

Andrea is staying at Victor Harbor Guest House whilst awaiting news of her new permanent accommodation. Andrea’s Mum, Aileen says “the weight has been lifted off my shoulders knowing that Andrea has permanent accommodation. It has always been a concern that if something happened to me, then what would happen to Andrea?” Aileen adds “Now I don’t have to

everything prepared to cook up a storm. Italian Meatballs is Arron’s favourite meal and he shares with us his recipe which his Mum taught him.

After Arron has finished his dinner, he then feeds Fluffy the cat. Clive sits and lets out an impatient bark, with tail wagging, to remind Arron not to forget him. Clive is fed last, but not only does he receive a combination of dry and wet dog food; if he is good he also gets Arron’s leftovers! Arron tends to the dishes and then joins Clive and Fluffy in the lounge room for pats, and with their bellies full and content it is a competition to see who will fall asleep on the lounge first!

In a display of gratitude for taking him for an afternoon walk around the neighbourhood, Clive gives Arron a big lick on the hand, as Arron leans down to unclip his lead. Clive is a three year old Silky Terrier and he keeps Arron company at home along with Fluffy the cat. Arron hangs up the dog lead and rushes to the kitchen to get his pots and pans ready for cooking dinner.

Arron checks his watch, it is approaching 5pm and Arron’s Support Worker, Carol, will arrive any minute now to assist him to cook his dinner and help him with any daily chores required to maintain his own home.Tonight Arron is making Italian Meatballs. Volunteers contribute not only their time, but also their skills and are pivital in programs such as woodwork, gardening, cooking and general maintenance.

The Board of Directors and Sub-Committee members are also volunteers and we thank them for their time and leadership.

Volunteers are not paid - not because they are worthless,

but because they are priceless.
