Bloomsburg University, a member of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, is a four-year coeducational public university founded in 1839. Th rough the stages of its development from a normal school to a teachers college to a multipurpose state college and fi nally to a university in 1983, the institution has retained its emphasis on liberal arts and career education.
Bloomsburg is recognized as one of the best 100 public universities in the United States, and excellence, ranging from its 18 national championships to its international reputation in a number of its academic programs, is an attitude found throughout the faculty and staff .
About 90 percent of Bloomsburg’s students come from throughout Pennsylvania, creating a diverse mix of cultures and ideas. It’s a place where friendships that last a lifetime begin. And it’s a busy place — with more than 160 student organizations and activities, NCAA Division II athletic programs and a popular recreation center.
> Enrollment— Total enrollment is now 9,400, with
an average incoming SAT of 1070 and class rank in
the upper 25 percent; Bloomsburg admits one in
seven applicants and has a four-year retention rate
signifi cantly higher than the national average. About
60 percent are women and 10 percent are non-tra-
ditional. About 90 percent of Bloomsburg graduates
are quickly placed in their chosen fi elds.
> Faculty— With approximately 1,000 employees,
Bloomsburg University has 383 full-time faculty,
70 percent of whom hold doctoral degrees and 72
percent of whom are tenured. Th e staff is organized
into four divisions: Academic Aff airs, Administra-
tion, Student Life and University Advancement.
Governance is through the State System of Higher
Education’s Board of Governors and through the
university’s Council of Trustees.
> Degrees— Bloomsburg University off ers 63 bac-
calaureate degrees, 18 master’s degrees and a joint
doctoral degree in elementary education in coopera-
tion with Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
> Financial Aid— About 70 percent of all students
receive some form of fi nancial aid; average amount
of aid is $10,026 per year.
> Cost —About $5,358 per semester for Pennsylva-
nia residents (tuition, fees, typical room and meal
plans), $13,396 for non-residents.
> School Colors, Mascot— Th e school colors, origi-
nally “lemon and garnet,” have been maroon and
gold since the 1920s. In the early 1930s, the Husky
became the school mascot when a dog owned by a
faculty member accompanied Adm. Richard E. Byrd
on an expedition to the South Pole.
Th e university’s Division of Continuing and Distance Education serves students through nondegree credit courses, noncredit minicourses, off -campus classes, credit for life experience and distance learning courses on public television.
Th e Town of Bloomsburg, located in the Susquehanna River Valley, has a population of about 12,000 people. Th e central business district is just three blocks southwest of campus, and includes more than 80 retail stores, restaurants, and the Bloomsburg Fair in September. More stores, restaurants and theaters can be found along nearby Route 11 and at the Columbia Mall, northwest of town.
Th e university is within a one-hour drive from such cities as Hazleton, Williamsport, Wilkes-Barre and Scranton; 1.5 hours from Harrisburg; 2.5 hours from Philadelphia; 3 hours from New York City and Baltimore; and four hours from Pittsburgh and Washington, DC.

Season PreviewFour years ago when coach Leah Carr was assem-
bling her fi rst recruiting class as a head coach, she
brought in Tia Mazzie, Kelsey Schwan, Ashley Bow-
ers, and Rebecca Belmonte who have helped lay the
foundation for what is now one of the top programs
in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Th e
four players have helped the Huskies to three play-
off appearances and last year a school record-tying
13 wins. Th eir outstanding play and leadership has
helped attract other top level players to the team.
To say the senior class is special to Carr would be an
understatement.
“Th e seniors on our team have been with me all
four years, my fi rst recruiting class. Th is is a special
group of players that have all worked extremely hard
and have done a great job setting the attitude and
leadership for the rest of the team,” said Carr. “As the
core of our team, I’m really proud of all them and
what they’ve been able to accomplish over the years.”
Th e Huskies will need for the senior class along with
a talented group of underclassmen to once again
perform at a high level in the always-tough PSAC as
the team once again battles for a PSAC playoff spot
and ultimately a PSAC championship.
ATTACK
Th e Huskies attack will feature a wealth of talent and
experience this season. Dominant attacker Allie
Kakareka, a fi rst team All-PSAC East and second
team South Region choice, led the Huskies with 50
goals and 74 points and was second on the team
with 24 assists.
“Allie is one of our best attackers and beyond her
athleticism, she has a lot of heart which makes her
an unstoppable player.”
Kelsey Schwan, a team captain, and junior Sam
King, a second team All-PSAC East, are looking to
make a mark after working hard in the off -season
to improve their game. King fi nished second on the
team with 46 goals, scoring in all but one match.
Adding speed and athleticism to the attack is sopho-
more Maggie Canavan and incoming freshman and
twin Ashley Bossert, while sophomores Kelsey
Metzler and Lindsay Babilon have developed
tremendous stick work after a year of experience.
Kelsey Paulsen, a sophomore, will be looking to add
time and experience to the attack this season.
MIDFIELD
Anchoring the midfi eld as a four year starter is Tia
Mazzie, a second team All-PSAC East selection
last year and one of the team’s captains this season.
Mazzie is a solid and aggressive midfi elder, and a
player that makes things happen. Her sister Sam
Mazzie, is a returning PSAC East Freshman of the
Year along with being fi rst team All-PSAC and All-
Region. Sam fi nished second on the team last season
with 62 points, ranking third in both goals (42) and
assists (20).
“If there was an unsung hero award, it would have
Tia’s name on it. She’s an all-around hard worker.”
Adding midfi eld experience for the Huskies is Sarah
Bennett, a relentless sophomore who contributes in
both the off ensive and defensive ends of the fi eld. A
composed player, sophomore Monica Novielli adds
aggressiveness to the midfi eld.

Season PreviewStepping up this year and adding time to the mid-
fi eld will come from sophomore Gabrielle
Lochetto. Natalie Draham will also be looking
to add some time this season. Incoming freshman
Aubrey Bossert, adds depth to the midfi eld and has
quickly adjusted to the college level of play.
DEFENSE
Th e Huskies welcome back an experienced defense,
which features seniors Ashley Bowers and Rebecca
Belmonte, in addition to junior Lindsay
Kupferschmidt, sophomores Amber Shiffl et and
Deanna Hauser. Bowers, a team captain, is coming
off a season in which she earned fi rst team All-
PSAC, led the team with 33 draw controls, grabbed
45 ground balls and caused 16 turnovers. A scrappy
and tenacious low defender, Belmonte will contrib-
ute her consistency to the solid defense. Incoming
freshman Courtney Werner will see some time in
the defensive end, while adding speed.
“Lindsay is coming off an outstanding season and
she continues to get better every day. Amber is a
defensive player that can be a threat anywhere on
the fi eld. We have a reliable and skilled defense to
provide stability in front of the cage, said Carr.”
GOALKEEPER
In goal, the Huskies welcome a familiar face in
sophomore Shelby Iezzi, a fi rst team All-PSAC East
selection, while they also have the addition of Sara
Bates to rely on. With stability and experience be-
tween the pipes, Bloomsburg looks to remain tough
to permeate as the duo works to gain experience in
front of the net.
“Shelby has done a great job,” said Carr. “She is our
returning goalie and she has worked hard this sum-
mer on her game in preparation for return.”
SCHEDULE
Th e PSAC has gone from a two-division setup to
a single division format for the 2011 season. Th e
change means an even more challenging schedule
for the Huskies in the always-rugged PSAC.
“Every game is going to be a battle for us; there won’t
be any second chances. Our focus is going to be one
game at a time,” said Carr.
OVERALL
Carr and the Huskies are confi dent that they have
the talent and experience to battle for a PSAC play-
off berth and a shot at the PSAC title. Th e senior
class, the foundation of this year’s team, would have
it no other way.

2011 Lacrosse Media Guide
Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences.
Th e fi rst major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a
structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league
voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II.
Th e most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09 academic year when the PSAC expanded adding
full-time members Gannon and Mercyhurst, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. Th e
membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the associate.
All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which
makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. Th e league has also grown to share the
distinctions as: the largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA,
and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level.
Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually send nearly one-third of
its teams into NCAA postseason play. Th e membership’s success has yielded 42 NCAA team and 228
individual title winners.
While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s fi nest
from an academic standpoint. Nearly 1/3 of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year
as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a GPA of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC
Scholar-Athletes were fi rst recognized in the mid-1990s.
Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at the
Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 118,000 students and claim over 670,000 alumni,
including 430,000 who reside in Pennsylvania.
