As we begin another new year, let us all be filled with thanks forthe many blessings we enjoy in our community. Beautiful parksand nature trails, wonderful restaurants, retail firms and excitingentertainment venues, municipal services that continue to provide

leadership and the utmost in responsiveness, reliability and safety, are truly second-to-none. However, there are those members of ourcommunity who demonstrate day-in and day-out what the conceptof community really means, and how Cuyahoga Falls has been mostdeeply blessed. These are all the community volunteers, staffs andprofessionals who generously give of their time and talents for thebenefit, strength and prosperity of Cuyahoga Falls.

In my many years serving the City of Cuyahoga Falls, I have notedthat organizations, businesses and municipal departments rely onextraordinary commitment and dedication to achieve goals and toprovide services for the community. Many volunteers and hard-

working staff are not often recognized for personal and professionalcommitment and achievement, and yet continue to serve with pas-sion. However, it is extremely critical that we recognize these effortsthat go above and beyond the call of duty, and pay tribute to themany community stewards in Cuyahoga Falls who have devoted, and continue to devote, extra time and care in providing servicesand assistance to others.

Throughout our community, there are many who have served onboards and commissions, City Council, for church and school vol-unteer groups, as festival committee members, as staff members

for non-profit or charitable organizations, and as truly dedicated

employees. Many also balance a number of personal and profes-sional commitments. These are the people who are invaluable inmaking Cuyahoga Falls the wonderful community that it is.

Certainly community stewardship is achieved on many levels and bymany groups and individuals. And 2011 will be no exceptionregarding our reliance on the special skills, talents, and persever-ance of these extraordinary members of our community. Let us alltake note, be sensitive of and show appreciation to those who gen-erously serve. Whether we share a kind word, extend a gesture offriendship, a handshake or a simple thank you, lets all takeopportunities to help make Cuyahoga Falls an even stronger, moreresilient and prosperous community now and in the future.

On behalf of the City of Cuyahoga Falls, I thank all our community volunteer groups, citizens and hardworking staff members

throughout this great city for your dedication, love of community, and commitment to excellence. We dedicate to you the 2011 edi-tion of the Official City of Cuyahoga Falls Community Calendar.

A sincere thank you is also extended to our 2011 Official City ofCuyahoga Falls Community Calendar partners listed here whoseprofessional support and loyalty to the Cuyahoga Falls communityare greatly appreciated.

And, thank you, citizens of Cuyahoga Falls, for the privilege to serveas your Mayor.

    Don L. Robart

The City of Cuyahoga Falls Engineering Department islocated on the first floor of City Hall and is responsible for thedesign and construction of all public improvement projects, including street paving, storm sewers, sanitary sewers, andwater lines. It serves as the repository for all allotment plot

plans, underground utility maps, and has on file SummitCounty Tax maps and federal government flood plain maps.

The Cuyahoga Falls Engineering Department is committed toreaching out to the community in support and appreciation ofthe voluntary efforts of citizens, families and organizationswho work hard to build momentum with local communityand environmental improvement projects. Citizen involvementin helping to prevent unnecessary pollutants and debris fromentering storm sewers and community water supplies is criti-cal. For any questions regarding the services of the Cuyahoga Falls Engineering Department, call 330-971-8180.

Help Protect Our Water QualityExcess fertilizers and pesticides applied to lawns and gardens wash off and contribute to water quality

problems. Sparingly use pesticides and herbicides and in the recommended amounts. Use of organicmulch and safer pest control methods are encouraged.

Yard clippings and leaves can wash into storm drains and add harmful amounts of nutrientsand organic matter entering streams. By participating in the local yard waste collection pro-

gram, residents are ensuring that yard wastes are properly composted. Mulching yard wastesand covering landscaping materials also help prevent debris from going into streets and intostorm drains.

Washing your car/vehicles and degreasing auto parts at home can send detergents and othercontaminants through the storm sewer system to our river and streams. Use a commercial car washthat recycles or treats its wastewater, or wash vehicles in the yard where the water can infiltrate into

the ground; make sure that all automotive fluid wastes are taken to a proper disposal/recycling location.

    EngineeringDepartment

Pet waste can be a major source of bacterial and nutrient problems in local waters. Leaving petwaste on the ground increases public health risk by allowing harmful bacteria and nutrientsto wash into a nearby storm drainand eventually into our streams andrivers. Pick up pet waste and disposeof it properly.

Individual efforts to protect our waterresources will make a difference!

For more information on residentialor commercial best practices to protectand to improve water quality, pleasecontact the Summit Soil and WaterConservation District (SWCD) office at330-929-2871 or visit the SWCD Website at www.summitswcd.org.

As George H.W. Bush stated, I take as my guide the hope of a saint: in crucial things, unity inimportant things, diversity in all things, generosity. Cuyahoga Falls Parks and Recreation has beenwell served over the years by outstanding stewards of our community.

If not for the volunteers who have given their time to keepthe parks clean and revitalized, assist with running

programs, serving food at senior lunches andassisting in governing the department, thecore values of Cuyahoga Falls Parks andRecreation would be lost.

Volunteers such as Boy Scouts helpingwith the annual Easter Egg Hunt andimproving our parks through EagleScout projects, smiling faces thatcall bingo numbers, stewards assist-ing in river clean-up efforts all

anchored by our dedicated parkboard members only continue tosolidify one of the cornerstones of ourcommunity: Parks and Recreation.

Join us in celebrating just a small sample ofthe stewards of our community as we thank

them for their time, effort andconstant dedication. Thank youvolunteers, we appreciate your generosity.

    Community Development

For over 30 years the downtown Falls River Square District has been wellknown for its summertime festivals. From the longest running festival inCuyahoga Falls, the Oktoberfest, to Festa Italiana and the Riverfront IrishFestival, folks throughout the region make the trip every year to attend one, ifnot all of these events.

Each festival, while celebrating its own unique heritage, also brings a sense of

family and community to the downtown.

Perhaps a little known fact about each of these festivals is that they are organized and carried outentirely by volunteers. The Irish, Italian and Oktoberfest committees are all non-profit 501 (c) 3organizations. Every dollar that is made throughout the three-day festivals is put back into theirrespective programs and charitable giving.

The committees hard work exemplifies the spirit ofCuyahoga Falls volunteerism and we areproud to honor the chairmen, committee members and hundreds of volunteers who give countlesshours to offer these unique festivals to our hometown!

Water Utilities DivisionThe City of Cuyahoga Falls water system supplies the daily water needs for thousands of households and

businesses in Cuyahoga Falls, Munroe Falls, Silver Lake and parts of Stow. Often taken for granted, our generouswater supply is provided by wells that have been drilled near the Cuyahoga River. The well head area is part ofa buried valley where permeable outwash gravels are crossed by major streams. The Cuyahoga River providesflow to the aquifer, and the well field is recharged by means of channels and lagoons.

Water supplied by the well field system is constantly monitored and must pass rigorous standards to guarantee thehighest quality water supply for the community. Approximately 200 miles of waterlines ranging from 2 inches to20 inches in diameter carry the water supplied by the Cuyahoga Falls Water Utilities system to consumers.

Protecting our precious water resource is critical. Many citizens have assisted through river and communitycleanup projects, educational programs and every day practices. Citizen participation will continue to be thedriving force behind the Water Utilities Division long-term plan to ensure that our water supply needs will be metfor many generations to come. The voluntary efforts of residents and businesses to report chemical spills andother potential sources of groundwater contamination are also nec-essary to preserve and protect ourcommunity water supply.

For more information on the Cityof Cuyahoga Falls Water Utilitiesprograms and services, please con-tact the Water Utilities Division at330-971-8130 or visit the City Website at www.cityofcf.com.
