River HighSchool Sports by Jason Miller

As summer is coming to an end, a newschool year is approaching. River is getting

ready for the academics of the upcomingyear as well as athletics. River High SchoolCross-Country, Football, Golf, andVolleyball are ready to start their year. Ourteams will miss last year’s seniors as wewelcome new talent from the class of 2015.

Cross-country looks like it will be anincredible year for the girls. Head CoachStephens said, “I have pretty high expecta-tions.” Last year, the team was runner upat the OVAC and missed the district tour-nament by only one point. This season can

only be better due to the fact that the entireteam is back again for this year. Laken

Ramsay has advanced to Regionals the pasttwo years as an individual runner.

Coach Stephens expects the seniors,Emily Dierkes and Randa Imhoff to beleaders for the girls’ team and BrandonPrice, a leader for the boys.

For the boys’ cross country team, CoachStephens expects a lot out of seniorBrandon Price. Chase Young and TravisGoddard are on the team, but more runnersare needed for a boys’ team.

Team is here. Head coach Mike Flannerystated, “As a coach, your expectations are

always high.” With a new year of football,River is looking forward to a promisingseason. Flannery said, “I feel I have one of the best quarterbacks in the valley.”

Regarding this year’s practice, Flannerycommented, “Right now… I feel we areway ahead of where we have been… Weare way ahead of schedule.” Flannery isexpecting his entire team, includingstarters and backups, to be leaders.

The River Football Team would like towelcome back Coach Tim Fry who took

two years off from coaching RiverFootball.

On August 26th, at Fort Frye, the RiverPilots Football Team will take to the field.When they run out onto the field, somewill be playing their last football seasonfor River while others will be stepping outonto the varsity field for the first time.This will be the start of a great year forfootball at River.

The head golf coach, Bob Cain, wasinducted into the Ohio High School Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame afterthe conclusion of last year’s season.

Cain said, “In team golf, you need four.We have three. We need to get a fourth.There [are] jobs available at the RiverHigh Golf Team.” Since the interview, theteam got a fourth player, Ford Cisler.However, high school golf plays six on thevarsity team. River’s golf team is stilllooking for more golfers.

Returning golfers from last year’s teamare Austin Curtis, Aaron Goddard, andJason Miller. Matt Marconi is out with an

injury. Cain added, “[Aaron] shot his life-time low in the sectional tournamentwhich is definitely encouraging…As far asAustin, we expect him to be the leader of the team.”

Regarding last year’s seniors, Cain said,“Any time you lose three seniors that getfull ride athletic scholarships to college…it will show.”

Jim Turner, the head volleyball coach,stated “[My goal is] to be competitive.”He believes that this year’s group is

young, but promising. Turner is excited tohave two returning District 12 Honorees.He believes that the entire team will becompeting for playing time on the varsitylevel.This year’s volleyball seniors are BrittanyConners, Lindsay Goddard, MaggieMorrow, Stephanie Murdock, Torey Potts,Anna Rufener, and Taylor Sterns. Juniorsinclude Alanna Smith, Dakota Earley,Brittany Harrigan, Hannah Jones,

Courtney Prout, Mikayla Roberts, AnnieTurner, and Leslie Young.Turner said, “There is a very good groupof freshmen” which includes AmandaBennett, Harley Cisler, Monica Curtis,Rachelle Ice, Mackenzie Marshall,Mikayla Newman, Devyn Potts, CaitlinRitchie, Dicey Stewart, Katie Thomas, andMackenzie Wade.

River is looking forward to a new yearof school. Some people will be the same,some missed, and others will be new.

Sports will start with the fall season. Wewill strive for wins, but if a loss comes ourway we will learn from the mistakes tobecome better because… “We are River.”

Fall sports are back and Beallsville’sxpected to have an exciting season.It’s a new season for Big Blue’s football

eam and excitement is in the air.opefully, having an older, more experi-

nced team will bring success to the neweason.

Lost through graduation were Jarrodinney, Nathan Kinney, Taylor Myers andogan Groves. “In order to be a good

eam, we have to be more physical onefense,” said Head Coach Dave Caldwell.The boys will start their season off with

ome field advantage against Conottonalley Aug. 26.The Lady Devil’s volleyball team is

eady to leave their mark! The team con-ists of 11 players and five returning letter-en. Coach Patrick Wells believes the girls

experience with each other. The girls lostJessica Campbell to graduation. Theladies’ first game will be Aug. 31 atBridgeport.

Beallsville’s golf team is small in num-bers but big in spirit this year. The team hassenior Justin Dietrich and sophomore JohnDietrich, both two-year lettermen. Andfreshmen Jeremy Swisher and Ryan Wellswill give Beallsville just enough for a team.

“This will be a rebuilding year with onlytwo returning lettermen,” said Coach PatMarcum. “We’re glad to have a team andpleased with the progress the freshmen areshowing. It will be a tough year and wewill be expecting a lot from our lettermen.

Lost to graduation were four seniors,Jacob Fraley, Chris Clary, Wesley Grovesand Daniel Blair, who will be continuinghis golf career at Muskingum College.
