Head coach Mike Flannery stated, “As a coach, your expectations are always high.” With a new year of football, River is looking forward to a promising season. Flannery said, “I feel I have one of the best quarterbacks in the valley.” Regarding this year’s practice, Flannery commented, “Right now… I feel we are way ahead of where we have been… We are way ahead of schedule.” Flannery is expecting his entire team, including starters and backups, to be leaders. The River Football Team would like to welcome back Coach Tim Fry who took two years off from coaching River Football. On August 26th, at Fort Fry e, the River Pilots Football Team will take to the field. When they run out onto the field, some will be playing their last football season for River while others will be stepping out onto the varsity field for the first time. This will be the start of a great year for football at River. The head golf coach, Bob Cain, was inducted into the Ohio High School Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame after the conclusion of last year’s season. Cain said, “In team golf, you need four. We have three. We need to get a fourth. There [are] jobs available at the River High Golf Team.” Since the interview, the team got a fourth player, Ford Cisler. However, high school golf plays six on the varsity team. River’s golf team is still looking for more golfers. Returning golfers from last year’s team are Austin Curtis, Aaron Goddard, and Jason Miller. Matt Marconi is out with an injury. Cain added, “[Aaron] shot his life- time low in the sectional tournament which is definitely encouraging…As far as Austin, we expect him to be the leader of the team.” Regarding last year’s seniors, Cain said, “Any time you lose three seniors that get full ride athletic scholarships to college… it will show.” Jim Tur ner, the head volle yball coac h, stated “[My goal is] to be competitive.” He believes that this yea r’s group is young, but promising. Turner is excited to have two returning District 12 Honorees. He believes that the entire team will be competing for playing time on the varsity level. This year’s volleyball seniors are Brittany Conners, Lindsay Goddard, Maggie Morrow, Stephanie Murdock, Torey Potts, Anna Rufener, and Taylor Sterns. Juniors include Alanna Smith, Dakota Earley, Brittany Harrigan, Hannah Jones, Courtney Prout, Mikayla Roberts, Annie Turner, and Leslie Young. Turner said, “There is a very good group of freshmen” which includes Amanda Bennett, Harley Cisler, Monica Curtis, Rachelle Ice, Mackenzie Marshall, Mikayla Newman, Devyn Potts, Caitlin Ritchie, Dicey Stewart, Katie Thomas, and Mackenzie Wade. River is looking forward to a new year of school. Some people will be the same, some missed, and others will be new. Sports will start with the fall season. We will strive for wins, but if a loss comes our way we will learn from the mistakes to become better because… “We are River. F.W. Schumacher Insurance Agency “For All Your Insurance Needs” 140 N.
