THERE’S SOMETHiNG iN THE WATER

Even more precious than gold, natural spring water attracted the first Swiss-Italian settlers to the region in the 1800s.

Our region is home to more than 70 natural mineral springs, and it was these, as much as the prospect of easy riches, that attracted the first wave of migrants to the area.

Rich in magnesium, calcium and silica, among other minerals, the springs were believed to cure all sorts of afflictions from acne to arthritis.

In the early 1800s, locals lobbied the council to halt sluicing for gold to protect the water and the Mineral Springs Reserve at Hepburn Springs was created in 1865.

Each of the minerals specific to the waters found in the area can benefit health: calcium is good for the development of bone tissue, function of muscles and relaxation; magnesium helps with muscle aches and pains; silica is important for strong bone formation; bicarbonate balances the body’s pH levels; and iron, important for red blood cells, is easily absorbed through the water.

The water is also supposedly good for indigestion and many people say it helps with stomach complaints and bowel irritation.

If you are just passing through the area, or only able to visit occasionally, remember to bring some empty bottles to sample this precious drop or try soaking in the pure waters – the ultimate in relaxation.

Our region is home to more than 70 natural mineral springs.

Accommodation

If you are looking to get out of the hustle and bustle of city life and need a place you can turn off your mobile phone, think of Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges – a place where chilling out is the norm.

A couple of days in the fresh air and sunshine, enjoying everything that Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges region has to offer, from art to fine dining, could be just what you need to recharge and unwind. Why not indulge that little bit more by staying a night or two?

The beauty of our region is that there is a huge range of accommodation options in the many villages, towns, the countryside and bushland surrounds. You are sure to find something that suits your budget and taste whether it be luxury lodging, a quaint cottage, an exquisite guest house, self-contained comfort, a traditional B&B, historic homestead, caravan or a camping spot.

The region has hundreds of self-contained properties which are ideal for couples, families, groups, girls’ weekends away and even your pets. Choose from modern villas, architectural masterpieces, miners’ cottages, vintage-inspired design, sustainable living or something with a gorgeous garden.

Some of these properties have featured in lifestyle magazines and you’ll find in every corner there is a tiny individual touch: a typewriter for guests to write up their comments, hand-wrapped soaps in the bathroom, a library piled high with books, claw-foot baths, industrial lighting, hand-made linen and plenty of quirky styling. It will feel like you’ve stepped into the home of a stylist for your weekend away.

Perhaps our best kept secret is our amazing wineries. Our region has been producing wine for over 160 years with the first vineyards planted back in the 1840s – which isn’t surprising when you consider our rich European heritage.

The regions’ cool to cold climate means that our wines are produced in small quantities of exceptionally high quality.

The majority of our wineries are owner-operated which provides a greater chance for you to meet and talk to the winemakers to gain a first-hand insight into their wine making techniques.

Just beyond Melbourne Airport and only 30 minutes from the city is the Sunbury wine region where vignerons have been producing wine since the 1860s. The Macedon Ranges wine region is home to some of Australia’s finest boutique wineries. Here you will discover passionate characters, hidden vineyards and secret gardens that extend as far as Clunes and Creswick.

Make sure you pick up the Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges Wine Touring Guide from a Visitor Information Centre to tour our wineries.
