Jordan Wolfrum begins her first season as the Saint Benedict head swimming and diving coach in 2012-13.

After three seasons as an assistant coach with the Blazers, Wolfrum takes over for Kathy Walker this season. Prior to last year, she was elevated to associate head coach for the Blazer swimming and diving program.

She helped the Blazers to a fourth place finish at the 2012 MIAC Championships, narrowly missing a top-three tally. In her time at Saint Benedict, she has coached 11 All-MIAC Athletes, including a team record eight last season.

Wolfrum has also spent the last four years on the staff of the Skip Kenney Stanford International Swim Camp, working with elite level athletes. In 2009 and 2012, Wolfrum coached at the Lea Mauer Stanford International Swim Camp. She is also a member of the College Swim Coaches Association of America and the United States Swimming Association.

Collegiately, Wolfrum competed at St. Cloud State, captaining the Huskies her final two seasons and helping them to a Northern Sun Swimming Championship in her senior year. Also a member of the great North Central Conference (NCC), Wolfrum was a member of the NCC Commissioners Academic Honor Roll during her career.

She graduated in 2009 from St. Cloud State with a degree in mathematics and a minor in statistics. She is currently working on her Master’s Degree from St. Cloud State.

2011-12 proved to be another successful season for the Saint Benedict swimming and diving team. With eight new school records, several Blazer and MIAC Athlete of the Week awards, and eight members who made the All-Conference team (the most in Blazer history), the Blazers truly set their mark in the MIAC.

With an explosive beginning, the team topped MSU Moorhead (155-145) in dual meet action, and then took first out of four teams at the Hamline Invite. The win at Hamline showed early frontrunners for the Blazers, as they beat Saint Mary’s and Augsburg, as well as the host Pipers. An additional high point came in November when sophomore Ellen Dean was named MIAC Athlete-of-the-Week for the second consecutive year, due to her impressive performances early in the season.

The Falcon Invitational at the University of Minnesota was highlighted by junior Mary Wood swimming her lifetime best in the 200 and 500 freestyle. Morgan Peterson also set a new school record in the 400 IM at the meet, breaking Kaelly Simpson’s record by .01 for a time of 4:39.69. The following meet against St. Thomas proved to be a major success with a victory by a score of 168-132. To end their fall season, the team achieved Scholar All-American status by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America for earning a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.0.

January brought the Blazers to Florida for the Orange Bowl Classic, and upon their return, they beat conference rival Carleton. The Blazers took second at their next two meets, at St. Thomas and St. Kate’s. They came out of the St. Thomas meet with three first place finishers, and at St. Kate’s, senior Carolyn Triggs took three first place finishes, as well as Lauren Kessler, Dean, Emily Roberts and Kristen Beste also placing first in their events. The MIAC Invitational highlighted first-year swimmer Katie Vogl setting three new lifetime bests, earning first in all three events. She was named both Blazer and MIAC Athlete of the Week in February for her efforts. At the 2012 MIAC Championships the following week, the Blazers ended in fourth out of eleven teams. They capped off a great season with a new school record in the 400 freestyle relay with Beste, Kessler, Roberts, and Triggs. Beste also earned Blazer Athlete of the Week due to her performance in the relay.

The banquet at the end of the season allowed for many celebrations of achievements throughout the year, not the least of which were the eight school records that were broken. Individuals included Kristen Beste in the 50-yard freestyle (23.98), Ellen Dean in the 100 butterfly (59.13), 200 butterfly (2:08.86) and 200 I.M. (2:11.06), and Emily Roberts in the 100-yard backstroke (59.10).

Teaming up for records were Roberts, Maria Gathje, Dean, and Triggs in the 400 medley relay (3:59.20), Brita Skalbeck, Roberts, Hailey Schwietz, and Beste in the 200 freestyle relay (1:37.06), and Beste, Samantha Kessler, Roberts, and Triggs in the 400 freestyle relay (3:35.14).

The 2012 All-MIAC team included eight team members in Beste, Dean, Alissa Lager, Skalbeck, Roberts, Schweitz, Gathje, and Triggs, marking the most members the Blazers have ever had. The team sportsmanship award was also given to senior Sarah Krantz.

The Blazer swimming and diving team is looking at things differently.

Under the direction of first-year head coach Jordan Wolfrum, the Saint Benedict swimming and diving team has raised expectations heading into the 2012-13 season.

“The whole team is swimming better than they ever have,” Wolfrum said. “We just had a swim that was a faster interval than any we’ve had in my four years here and everybody succeeded at it. So I’m really excited to see how they’re going to do.”

Wolfrum takes over after three seasons alongside longtime head coach Kathy Walker, who stepped down in the offseason to accept an opportunity as Aquatics Coordinator at the American International School of Muscat in Muscat, Oman.

“It’s exciting to take over for Kathy and build on the tradition she built here,” Wolfrum said. “I learned everything I know from her and Mike Ritchie. They taught me how help a group of athletes turn themselves into a powerful team. This year I hope to build on the past years’ successes and use what I learned from Kathy and Mike to help the Blazers reach their potential.”

With her experience with the Blazers as an assistant coach, Wolfrum is no stranger to the team in her rookie campaign, and knows that they have high expectations for themselves. Building a winning mindset is one area Wolfrum hopes to impact right away in her first season, and she has been impressed early.

“One of the things where we’ve made a change is a more competitive attitude. They did their own goals the other day, and for the first time a competitive attitude was there. And I wasn’t there; I wasn’t a part of it. We placed fourth last year at conference, not a lot of points behind St. Thomas, and beat UST is on there as one of their goals. So they’re really fired up.”

Wolfrum hopes to rein in that excitement and channel it into practice each day. She wants to show the team that they can perform at a level that they didn’t even know they could.

“That’s one of my goals, to show that they can swim fast the entire season and they don’t have to wait until their rested in taper to swim fast. I want them to understand that they are just as good or better than the rest of the conference, and they can swim at a level that they’ve never swam at before.”

On the boards the method is the same, as Wolfrum is excited about the talent level the Blazers have, but knows they need to be helped along to also understand.

“For the divers we have a pretty young team but we have a big team. We have five, and they don’t know their full potential yet. I’m excited to see how they do, they’re all pretty green in the sport. They’ve either started late, haven’t done a lot of diving, or just don’t realize how good they can be yet. So we definitely have some all-stars that are ready to show off.”

The practice plan has changed too. If building confidence is the goal, teaching how to win is the road to get there, and it’s a different concept than in the past.

“We do a lot of things in practice now that we haven’t done. Things like racing 100 percent, do a set that is focused on going as fast as you can and beating the person next to you. I don’t believe in high yardage practices, I believe in high intensity practices. That you can put your mind in the state that you are racing, that you are winning. Then you won’t have the race anxiety if you were just swimming for the sake of swimming. So we’re trying to change that mindset that we’re going to practice to practice winning.

Ellen Dean posted three top-eights as the Blazers placed fourth at the MIAC Championships last season.
