2012 ANNUALREPORT

Raise your hand and your voice against arthritis! Arthritis is an equal opportunity disease striking all ages, ethnicities and races.

In its second year of reorganization, the Great Lakes Region took a closer look at the hundreds, yes - even thousands - of faces of arthritis in our midst.

Those faces of arthritis – from some of our youngest constituents to “Millennials” in the prime of life to our senior citizens – are at the heart of our efforts and mission.

Comprised of former chapters in Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, the Great Lakes Region is home to 9.2 million people with arthritis or a related disease.

And a staggering 38,800 children in the five states have been diagnosed with arthritis. West Virginia is one of 11 states without a single pediatric rheumatologist and seven other states in the country have only one.

To address the needs of this significant population, we intro-duced the Breaking the Pain Chain four-session educational series across the region. In 2012, 135 people attended nine BPC series. We implemented the Arthritis Expo educational forum in all markets. In 2012, 3,700 people attended 17 Expos in the region. And we increased our juvenile arthritis (JA) activities including summer camps and the SAK (Supporting Arthritis Kids) backpack program.

The region is engaged in supporting research that ultimately may lead to a cure. Eleven research scientists at five region institutions were funded at a total of $690,000 in 2012. Some of the exciting research efforts seek to unlock questions in the treatment of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis and scleroderma. An investigator at the University of Michigan is testing the efficacy of acupressure in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis.

Throughout the region Arthritis Ambassadors and e-advocates have raised their voices as grassroots advocates for people with arthritis – heightening awareness and, ultimately, support for initiatives geared to improving their lives. In 2012 the region added 1,957 new e-advocates, a 26 percent increase over 2011 figures.

Arthritis is serious, progressive and potentially fatal. Preven-tion, delay or reduced impact is possible. Relief is available and more promising treatments are on the horizon. The faces of arthritis are all around us. Together, we are making a difference in their lives.

With kind regards,

“People tell me that if they didn’t have this class (Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program) they wouldn’t be able to move as well. I am blessed to teach it. Their lives are so much better,” said Teddi Wallace, AFEP program leader.

“The Arthritis Foundation is at the forefront of getting programs out there,” said Carol Ignash, pictured with daughter, Carolin, who has juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA).

“My son, Logan, (pictured left) has arthritis. 300,000 kids have arthritis. I sign up for the Walk and Jingle Bell Run for all the children,” said Ray Butter.

“We need a cure,” said Jaime Moy. Her son, Andrew, pictured left, has arthritis.

The mission of the Arthritis Foundation is to improve lives through leadership in the prevention, control and cure of arthritis and related diseases.

Arthritis research and prevention efforts must be strengthened to reduce and minimize the burden of arthritis.

• Eleven researchers at five Great Lakes Region institutions received $690,000 in funding for RA, OA & JA research

• The Great Lakes Region provided $477,529 to direct research, awards and grants. In addition, an endowed fund totaling $356,638 was transferred to the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in support of ongoing scleroderma research in memory of Jean O. Shoemaker.

• The Great Lakes Region served 54,501 constituents, more than any other region.

• Programs were delivered at more than 710 community locations in the Great Lakes Region and accounted for 29 percent of the evidence-based programs and services for the nation.

• At year-end, there were 9,388 e-advocates, a 26 percent increase. Ten members of Congress serving in the Great Lakes Region joined the Bicameral Congressional Arthritis Caucus.

• The first Great Lakes Region advocacy webinar on the Affordable Care Act was attended by 99 people.

The heavy burden of arthritis – the pain, dis- ability, scope, cost and more – is unacceptable.

More must be done to prevent, control and cure the nation’s leading cause of disability. Ignoring arthritis is unacceptable.

The Arthritis Foundation is leading the way to conquer this debilitating disease through increased education, outreach, research, advocacy and other vital programs and services.
