Program InformationWhat is College for Teens?College for Teens (CFT) is a series of fun, unique enrichment programs for high school students. This summereducational supplement program consists of one and two-week classes taught by UW system faculty or otherhighly qualified and experienced instructors. All programs provide teens with an academic edge." CFT is forgrades 9-12. (*Classes may include grades 6-8.) When registering, use Fall 2012 grade levels.

When are Classes?Mon.-Fri., June 18-Aug. 10. All programs are held on the UWMcampus, unless otherwise noted.Specific class dates/times are includedin course descriptions, and are locatedon pages 3-11.

Registration Policy Once your teen is registered there are norefunds or transfers. Refunds are madeonly for classes canceled by CFT.

How Do I Register?Hassle free registration. No waiting in long lines. Registration opens each yearon Jan. 15. Call, fax in your registration, or go online to sce-kids.uwm.edu. (Mailed registrations add several days to the registration process and lessen the likelihood of availability in your desired class.)

Confirmation ofRegistrationWithin two weeks of your registration,receipt and parental permission forms aremailed to you for completion and return.We encourage you and your teen tofamiliarize yourselves with the campus.All participants are encouraged to havetheir own health insurance as limitedsecondary accident insurance is providedby the university.

We offer two options to make things easier for kids and parents. For a minimalcharge, supervised care is available before and after the program day. So comeearly or stay late, however you must sign up for the whole week.

Before Care (7:30-9am) and After Care (4-5:30pm) will meet in the Union TerraceRoom. Chaperoning child to or from class is included in this fee.

Classes that do notreach sufficientenrollment by May 15will be canceled. Pleaseregister before this dateto ensure classes run.

n Please note: College for Kids/College for Teens only supervises students while they are enrolled in class or are registered for beforeand after care. Students enrolled in back-to-back classes or before and after care will be chaperoned to their next destination. Noextended supervision (longer than the 15 minutes needed to get to the next classroom) is available between 9am-4pm for those notenrolled in class during any part of the day.

n Please have your teen bring a copy of this schedule to class each day so we can make sure they get to the correct class.

Mini-Courses SummerACT Preparation ClassPrerequisite: Students must have a core GPA of 2.0 Designed to help prepare 11th and 12thgraders for the official ACT collegeentrance exam. Students cover math,reading, writing, science reasoning andtest-taking strategies. A scheduledunofficial ACT pre- and post-testexperience is included. Archaeology Field SchoolOne of our most popular classes returnsthis summer with a twist. After 10 yearsof excavations, work with scientists as weanalyze our finds and tell the rest of thestory of Trimborn Farm. The adventurebegins on campus with an orientation toarchaeology and the early history ofMilwaukee followed by lab work with theartifacts. We will spend two days at thedig site to complete our stories ofTrimborn Farm. The UWM Writing Project- Teen Writing AcademyMeet each day in groups facilitated byexperienced writers and teachers whose common goals are to inspire the imagination, develop as writers and have fun! Writers will:n� Explore a variety of genres, includingpoetry, short stories, plays, graphicnovels and essays

n� Choose a genre on which to produce a final, polished piece of writing

Check InOn your teen’s first day, check in at the Union Terrace Room, where you willmake sure you’ve filled out all the properpaperwork. You will then receive yourCFK/CFT drawstring backpack andwristband. (Please note: you need to do this for your first class only. The lines may be long, so please arrive 30minutes early.)

Pick Up – Drop Off You may pick up or drop off at the UnionCircle, 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd., or insidethe Union in the Terrace Room (SWcorner on the ground floor).

The instructors will bring their studentsto the Union Terrace at the end of classtime. You must pick your teen up within15 minutes of the end of class (i.e. if classends at 11 am, pick up must be no laterthan 11:15am). Students will be allowedto wait for their ride either inside at theUnion Terrace or outside at the drive-up.(Please make sure your teen knowswhere they are meeting you.)

You will be charged $7 for each 15 minutesyou are late. (i.e. 4:16-4:31 would be $7,4:32-4:47 would be $14 and so on). If yourteen is not picked up within one hourCFK/CFT will contact the UWM police. Yourteen will not be allowed to return toclasses until the fee has been paid.

Only students who have a signed parentalconsent form indicating that they canleave unattended will be able to leavewithout an adult. If your teen is to gohome on their own, make sure you signthat form. These students will be given“orange” wristbands to wear throughoutthe program.

WristbandsWristbands are given out on the first dayof a session and are to be worn each dayof the program. If your teen is enrolled inmore than one session, he/she canreceive a new band at the beginning ofeach session. The old wristband must beturned in to get a new one. It is yourresponsibility to make sure your teenwears the wristband each day. This is theway we identify our students. The colorstell the staff what privileges the childhas, such as leaving campus unattendedor not being included in pictures. It alsoverifies that your teen is in our program.Your teen will not be allowed toparticipate in class unless he/she has thewristband on.

MealsLunch and snacks are not included. Feelfree to send food along with your child.Only students with orange wristbandscan purchase food on campus.

Drawstring Backpacks!All participants will receive a FREECFK/CFT drawstring backpack!Backpacks are handed out to youon the first day when you check in.
