ABOUT BLOOMSBURG

Bloomsburg University, a member of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, is a four-year coeducational public university founded in 1839. Through the stages of its development from a normal school to a teachers college to a multipurpose state college and finally to a university in 1983, the institution has retained its emphasis on liberal arts and career education.

Bloomsburg is recognized as one of the best 100 public universities in the United States, and excellence, ranging from its 18 national championships to its international reputation in a number of its academic programs, is an attitude found throughout the faculty and staff.

About 90 percent of Bloomsburg’s students come from throughout Pennsylvania, creating a diverse mix of cultures and ideas. It’s a place where friendships that last a lifetime begin. And it’s a busy place — with more than 200 student organizations and activities, NCAA Division II athletic programs and a popular recreation center.

The university’s Division of Continuing and Distance Education serves students through nondegree credit courses , noncredit minicourses, off-campus classes, credit for life experience and distance learning courses on public television.

The Town of Bloomsburg, located in the Susquehanna River Valley, has a population of about 12,000 people. The central business district is just three blocks southwest of campus, and includes more than 80 retail stores, restaurants, and the Bloomsburg Fair in September. More stores, restaurants and theaters can be found along nearby Route 11 and at the Columbia Mall, northwest of town.

The university is within a one-hour drive from such cities as Hazleton, Williamsport, Wilkes-Barre and Scranton; 1.5 hours from Harrisburg; 2.5 hours from Philadelphia; 3 hours from New York City and Baltimore; and four hours from Pittsburgh and Washington, DC.

2012 Season Preview

The 2011 season was a memorable one to say the least for the Bloomsburg University field hockey team. The Huskies won their fourth straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship, and carried an undefeated season into the NCAA national semifinal game. With national exposure surrounding the Huskies, the 2012 squad is ready to defend its conference title and take strides towards an NCAA Champion-ship.

Bloomsburg tallied 19 wins for the second consecutive season, including a 10-game run through conference play on its way to a PSAC Championship. The dream season of a national cham-pionship came to an end, however, as eventual champion West Chester took down BU in penalty strokes in a semifinal matchup.

The 2012 Huskies return 15 players from last season, including two all-conference performers. BU opens its season at home on Aug. 30 against Adelphi before playing road games in New England on Sept. 1 and 2 against Stonehill and Saint Anselm, re-spectively. One of the most anticipated matchups of the season is the PSAC-opener on Sept. 11 against West Chester.

“The work ethic from this team during preseason has been tremendous,” Rhoads said. “They all are dedicated and commit-ted for a great 2012 season. The seniors are excited and looking forward to a great end to their career, but I believe they are very fortunate to have the entire team working together for positive outcomes.”

ATTACKBloomsburg tallied more than 100 goals for the third straight season in 2011. It held the fourth-best team scoring average in Division II at 3.96 per game which featured six players ranked in

the top 50 in goals. BU will have a slightly different look on the front line this year after losing three-time all-American and Na-tional Player of the Year candidate Amanda Riley to graduation.

Fortunately for the Huskies, a talented senior class is set to keep the highly powered offense rolling for the upcoming season. Jenna DiSabatino scored a career-high 13 goals last season including three multi-goal games. Brooke Simonovich rounded out the 2011 trio of double-digit scorers with 10. The East Stroudsburg native also dished out six assists, good for second on the team.

Junior Brittany Mathews will look to continue her increased play over her first two seasons in maroon and gold. She set career-highs last season in goals (five) and assists (three). Seniors Sandy Anceravage and Alexis Weber should see an added role in the Husky attack, as sophomore Nikki Black hunts for her first career goal at BU.

MIDFIELDA pair of seniors will anchor the midfield for the 2012 season. An All-PSAC first team member last year, Amber Aulenbach brings a wealth of experience to the team. She finished with 20 points off seven goals and six assists last season and remains a pivotal asset in transition for BU. Fellow senior Cassie DiSaba-tino enters her third season with the team after playing in 19 of BU’s 20 games last season.

Junior Samantha Facciolla and sophomores Felicia Domenici and Candice Smith return and are expected to see a great deal of playing time this season. All three competed in more than 11 games with Domenici registering a goal in a 6-0 win over Indiana (PA).

DEFENSEThe Husky defense was one of the best in the nation last year. Bloomsburg led Division II in goals against average (0.54), and limited opposing teams to just 87 shots on goal the entire season (4.35/game). Look for BU to feature some new faces on the back line through the 2012 campaign.

Junior Jaclyn Beasley returns as the only upperclassman on defense after Bloomsburg graduated Becca Sherman and Betsy Renn. In her first season since transferring from American Uni-versity, Beasley played a significant role in the successful defen-sive line, earning her a spot on the All-PSAC second team. As a defender, Beasley put up impressive offensive numbers, scoring three times and dishing out five assists. She also led the team with three defensive saves.

Sophomores Courtney Berger and Kelsey Tobias remain with the program and should continue to improve in their second year in maroon and gold. They each played in more than five games last year and should expect to see added playing time this season.

BU will have a new look in the cage this season. Junior goal-keeper Megan Eppley enters the season with a strong chance of earning the starting role this season. In her six games played last season, she didn’t allow a goal and made five saves.

NEWCOMERSThe Huskies have a talented group of incoming freshman this season that should all battle for playing time in preseason camp. Bloomsburg’s incoming class includes Nikki Gattone, Kara Hart-man, Meagen Hill, Emily Maiorana, Gabriana Nisiotis, and Tess Shelly.

“We are pleased with our incoming freshman class and the con-tributions they will make to the program,” Rhoads stated. “How-ever, we always look at the entire team as one. The focus must be on team unity, hard work, and commitment to the program and each other.”

OVERALLBloomsburg enters the season with all the pieces required to make another run at a PSAC title. With expectations high, how-ever, it will be crucial for the Huskies to take their season a game at a time.

“The PSAC conference is tough and filled with great hockey,” Rhoads said. “We always go one game at a time and we look forward to our first date of competition. As a coaching staff, we believe our biggest goal is to simply get better every game and every practice. If we improve not only individually but as a team, we can continue the tradition and success that has been a part of the field hockey program for years.”

A true NCAA coaching legend, Jan Hutchinson retired at the end of the 2009 season, after seeing the Huskies win their fourth consecutive NCAA Division II champion-ship. As head field hockey coach, she was in charge of a program that has won 16 national championships and 17 conference titles. While as head softball coach, she is the NCAA Division II all-time leader in career wins and has made an NCAA-record 28 consecutive trips to the Division II championships. Hutchinson also is the win-ningest college coach in any division with 1,806 combined wins between field hockey and softball.

FIELD HOCKEYWhile at Bloomsburg, Hutchinson’s field hockey squads posted winning records in 31 of her 32 seasons and amassed an overall record of 591-75-20 for a winning percent-age of .872. She is the winningest coach in NCAA field hockey history and is the only coach with over 500 victories.

Under Hutchinson, the Huskies have enjoyed many outstanding seasons and have won 16 or more games on 26 occasions. Her teams won national championships in 1981, 1983, 1984, 1987, 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008 and in 2009. Her first string of four straight titles (1996-99) was the first time in the history of NCAA field hockey that the feat was accomplished. Her teams have also registered nine national runner-up finishes.

In addition, the Huskies captured Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championships in 1983, 1984, 1987, 1988, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1997, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2009, garnering eight runner-up showings.

Hutchinson has been chosen as the national Division II Coach of the Year seven times in her career, including 1991, 1998, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2009. Her 2006 team went undefeated and untied on its way to the NCAA D-II championship, the fourth time in school history for that to happen.

Her 2008 team set numerous school, conference and NCAA Division II marks, includ-ing a record for goals scored in a season with 161, shattering the mark of 132 set by the Huskies in 2007. She also coached Jamie Vanartsdalen, the NCAA all-time record holder for goals and points in a season and career.

Four athletes on the 2009 team achieved NFH-CA All-American honors, bringing the total under Hutchinson to 54 performers who have combined to win 105 All-American awards. Under Hutchinson’s leadership, 12 Bloomsburg players, including Vanartsdalen in 2007 and 2008, have also been named national “Player of the Year,” the most of any coach in Division II.

SOFTBALLOne of the most successful coaches ever in Di-vision II softball history, Jan Hutchinson retired at the end of the 2010 season.

During her career as coach of the Huskies, Hutchinson posted a record of 1,215-288-2 (.805) and has made an NCAA record 28 con-secutive trips to the NCAA championship tour-nament. She has the most wins of any NCAA Division II coach in history and is sixth on the all-time wins list regardless of division. She is also second on the NCAA Division list and sev-enth overall for highest winning percentage.

Bloomsburg has been to the championship round nine times, twice finishing as the national runner-up with losses each time in extra in-nings in the national title game. She also has six third-place showings and two fourth-place finishes. The Huskies also won the 1982 AIAW national championship.

In softball, Bloomsburg holds 16 NCAA Di-vision II individual, team or championship records. In only her fourth season, Hutchinson won the national championship “double” in the 1981-82 school year, claiming the field hockey title in the fall and the softball championship that spring.

Bloomsburg has dominated Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) competition win-ning 15 softball championships. In addition, her players have enjoyed recognition in softball with 36 players earning 57 All-American awards.

OVERALLHutchinson’s achievements in coaching have not gone unnoticed by her peers. She has been honored with induction into both the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Halls of Fame. In addition, Hutchinson was named the winner of the C. Vivian Stringer Award by the United States Sports Academy in the summer of 2006.

Hutchinson’s coaching talents have not only helped those as student-athletes, but several of her former players have gone on to coach at the intercollegiate level. At Bloomsburg, she has former All-American performers as her top as-sistant coaches in softball.

Others have gone on to coaching jobs elsewhere, such as Janelle Breneman (head softball coach at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro), Marci Hickey (head softball coach at the Uni-versity of Vermont), Leah Conte (former assistant field hockey and lacrosse coach at Mary Washington College) and Kathy Frick (former head coach at Goucher College, Bloomsburg and current head coach of Lafayette University lacrosse.)

Two former softball players have also played professionally. Janelle Breneman was a member of the Georgia Pride and Marty Laudato was a member of the Tampa Bay Fire Stix. In 1999, Laudato was named WPSL Hitter of the Year.

A 1971 graduate of East Stroudsburg University, Hutchinson also earned a master’s degree in education from the school in 1979. Prior to Bloomsburg, she initiated the women’s physical education program at Blair Academy and served as head coach for field hockey, basketball and softball. She has also been inducted into the Newton High School and Sussex County (NJ) Halls of Fame. In 2000, the Bloomsburg softball field was named in her honor.
