Welcome Kankakee Community Col-lege student athletes, parents, supporters and fans!

We begin another year of KCC athlet-ics, and I continue to be inspired by the level of commitment and determination of our student athletes to succeed not just in their respective sports but in the class-room! Our athletic program, and each sport, begin with the strong dedication of our complete coaching staff and are sup-ported by the KCC Board of Trustees and our community. Participation and success in athletics is often the basis for many of life’s skills and experiences. Competition through KCC’s six intercollegiate sports enhances a student athlete’s desire for excellence while further developing team-work, communication, time management and commitment skills.

As parents and educators, we pledge to join your efforts to provide encourage-

ment and support to our student athletes.

The resources of KCC are available to

all student athletes to aid them in the

achievement of their educational goals as

well as their athletic achievements. The

faculty and staff at the college will always

encourage all of our students to set high

expectations and to apply themselves

toward achieving those goals.

It is an honor to be part of the Cava-

liers family, and I would like to thank

the parents of our student athletes, each

member of the coaching staff, and the

members of our Cavalier Club who help

to support our athletic teams. Please join

the Board of Trustees, myself, faculty,

staff, and all Cavaliers fans in wishing each

of our teams and coaches a successful

season.

In addition, I hope you will join me in

welcoming Mr. Julian Springer as the

coordinator of athletic academic suc-

cess program and head men’s basketball

coach for Kankakee Community College.

He will play a large role in the academic

success of our student athletes.

Season Outlook 2012-13

4

With a new look and a new head coach, the Cavaliers will rely heavily on transfers to steer the ship this season. The lone returning sophomore is Anthony Williams, a guard who averaged 7.2 points per game last season. Julian Springer takes over the helm in his first season as head coach. “We were able to bring in an extremely talented recruiting class in a very short amount of time,” Springer said. “We have an experienced team with seven sophomores. They will all have a chance to contribute this season.”

FRONTCOURTDarius Wilson, a long, explosive, 6’7” sophomore forward who

averaged nearly 10 points per game as a freshman at Northern Iowa Area Community College will provide much needed athleticism and versatility.

Lebarron Hull, a 6’6” sophomore forward who averaged 12 points per game at McHenry County College is a do-it-all forward who will bring leadership to this year’s squad. Playing in the middle is a 6’9” center, Ronald Farmer Blanchard, who will be a strong, physical pres-ence for the Cavaliers.

BACKCOURT

Perimeter play will be the team strength this season. Leading the

charge on the wings will be 6’4” sophomore guard Girbran Smith

and 6’2” sophomore guard Dominique Gaddis. Smith and Gaddis

both averaged 12 points per game last season at Rock Valley Col-

lege. At 6’6”, Jerome Brown, is a terrific shooter who will stretch the

floor. He is a transfer from University of Illinois at Chicago. Returning

sophomore Anthony Williams (6’1”) is a steady scorer who has the

potential to be the team’s best perimeter defender. The point guard

battle will be between three freshmen: Dabriawn Johnson, Robert

Hurd, and Sherman Barber. Other freshman who have a chance to

contribute right away are 6’2” D’lando Carter and 6’4” Virgil Fleming.

The Cavaliers can be a team to look out for once the post-season

approaches. “This can be a team that gets better and better as the

year goes on. We have hardworking student-athletes who genuinely

care about each other. It will be exciting to see how far this team

can go,” said Springer.

CAVALIERS GAME DAYRyan Gymnasium provides an intimate venue for the college basketball experience. The support of the Kankakee community and surrounding areas are second to none. At select games there are special game day events, such as “Pack the Place” along with special halftime promotions.

CAVALIERS ACADEMICSKCC takes pride in academic achievement. “Academics will be the number one component for the college experience of our student-athletes,” said coach Springer. “KCC is very fortunate to have student-athletes who take pride in being ‘students’ first. We will continue to bring in student-athletes who believe in what KCC has to offer and will work hard toward achieving their degree from KCC and moving on to the university level.”

CAVALIERS COMMUNITYIn the Kankakee community, KCC student-athletes serve as representatives of the college and its athletic department. Cava-liers student-athletes are held to a higher level of accountability and responsibility both within the campus environment and in the community. This responsibility creates a family atmosphere for the Cavaliers basketball team and strengthens the bond between teammates. The family experience continues beyond graduation as lifelong friendships are formed.

CAVALIERS BOY’S BASKETBALL SUMMER CAMP

This specialized teaching camp separates the areas of post play and perimeter play in one camp. The campers are grouped by age and position. There is a tremendous focus on offensive and defensive skill development.

All aspects of the game are covered. A large emphasis is placed on both skill development and daily competition. Each camper will compete in several league and individual contests. For informa-tion, application, specific times and cost, phone 815-802-8600 or 815-802-8609.

Meet The Coaches

ASSISTANT COACH: Michael BrownMichael Brown begins his first season

at KCC as an assistant coach. He joins the Cavalier program after serving as an assistant coach at Rock Valley College, where he helped the program achieve its first winning season since 2001. He is also heading into his third summer as coach of the Chicago Demons 17 and under AAU program.

Prior to his stint at Rock Valley College, he coached at De La Salle High School (Chicago) as an assistant coach. De La Salle won the regional and sectional

championship and were ranked as high as no. 2 in the state that season. Brown is an alumnus of De La Salle High School, where he played basketball and football for four years.

He continued his education at St. Xavier University where he was a student-athlete for four years and a two-year starter in basketball. He graduated in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in business administra-tion.

Brown has also spent a season with the Chicago Steam of the American Basket-ball Association.

HEAD COACH: Julian Springer

Julian Springer begins his first season as the head men’s basketball coach at Kankakee Community College. He takes over the Cavalier program after serving as the head coach at Rock Valley College the past two seasons where he led the Golden Eagles to their first winning season in more than a decade finishing 20-11. In Springer’s only recruiting class, Rock Valley improved from last place to second place in the region and recorded one of the biggest conference turnarounds in school history going from 4-10 in his first season to 9-5 this past season.

Prior to Rock Valley College, he spent one season as an assitant coach at NCAA division I Jackson State University where the Tigers won the SWAC regular season championship, finishing with a 17-1 record which is the best mark in conference his-tory. He coached three all-swac perform-ers including player of the year Garrison Johnson and newcomer of the year Tyrone Hanson. Springer also spent two seasons as an assistant coach and Director of Campus Recreation at Alma College. There he assisted in a recruiting class that doubled the teams win total from the previous season.

“Julian Springer has a history of success working with student-athletes,” said Ted Petersen, KCC athletic director. “Though it is important and beneficial that he has coaching experience, Springer will have his biggest impact as a motivator and educa-tor. His talent as a coach will be comple-

mented nicely by his history of success with students.”

A native of Chicago, Springer directed and coached a city basketball League for two years in which more than twenty players earned division I scholarships during that span, including pac-10 player of the year Jerome Randle (California), west coast conference player of the year Jeremy Pargo(Gonzaga), and Big 12 Newcomer of the year Stephon Hannah (Missouri). He also has spent several years coaching college basketball camps at Cen-tral Michigan University, Northern Illinois University, and University of Toledo along with the Black Coaches and Administra-tors day camps in Indianapolis, Tampa, and St. Petersburg.

In 2007, he earned a master’s degree in athletic administration while serving as the graduate student assistant coach for the Central Michigan University Chip-pewas. While at CMU, he also served as head coach of the Central Michigan Club Basketball Traveling Team along with teaching undergraduate physical education courses for two years. In 2005, Springer graduated from Southern Illinois University with a degree in recreation and a minor in coaching. While at SIU, he served as a student assistant with the Salukis.

“KCC has a tremendous amount of bas-ketball tradition and community support,” said Springer. “After visiting the campus for my interview, I knew that I wanted to join the KCC family. I look forward to being a part of the Kankakee community

and I’m ready to get started.” Springer attended St. Ignatius High

School where he helped his team win the regional and sectional championship and finish in the sweet sixteen for the Illinois State Basketball Tournament in 2000.He is also a member of the National Associa-tion of Basketball Coaches, Black Coaches and Administrators Association and the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association. In 2011, Springer received a master’s degree in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation from Jackson State University. He is one of only a few college head coaches in the country to have earned two master’s degrees.
