Statement Of Intent

Manchester City Council, in partnership with LOCOG and the BBC , have designated Exchange Square as one of 22 national Live Sites for the 2012 Olympic Games, creating a piece of Olympic Space in the city centre at which to watch the Games competition locally and in a secure and entertaining environment.

Manchester’s ambition is to work with the Live Site partners to deliver an Olympic experience that provides real engagement with the 2012 Olympic Games and it’s partners and realises the full potential of the cultural, social, sporting and economic benefits by providing a piece of Olympic space that creates a point of interaction with residents, existing city centre users, visitors and Olympic Football match attendees.

The Exchange Square Live Site will make the Games relevant to Manchester, a place to congregate, to view and to keep up to date with the latest developments, whatever the time of day – and the city centre destination that people will gravitate to for ‘touch points’ – the opening and closing ceremonies, team GB matches, key GB medal hopes, the 100m final, Super Saturday. etc.

The Olympic Live Site will open from the 26th July when the first match of the Olympic Games is staged at Old Trafford, through to the closing ceremony on the 12th of August – carrying up to 18 hrs of 2012 Olympic screen content each day for 18 consecutive days - targeting in excess of 450,000 visitors to the site.

However, the value of the Live Site extends beyond this Games Time experience – from June to September, BBC major event screen content provides the opportunity to build a programme of events in the square, which can address both local and national agendas.
