“Some of my fondest childhood memories were made while I enjoyed programs offered by the Brick Township Recreation Department. It thrilled me to see my own children enjoy many of the same programs I did as a child and today, it is my grandchildren who are making their own memories.

The Brick Township Department of Parks and Recreation continues to provide citizens of all ages with a variety of quality-of-life improving programs, events and activities. This brochure provides you with the information you need to take advantage of all that is offered to you. From our beloved beaches to new programs including adult kickball, yoga and more, the Department of Parks and Recreation has something for everyone.

I would like to thank the local businesses that have sponsored this year’s Recreation Program Guide. Thanks to their generosity, this brochure has been printed at no-cost to the taxpayers of our community. It is another example of our commitment to reducing costs for you - the people of Brick Township.”! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! - Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis

Brick Township’s Beaches WILL BE OPEN for the 2013 Season!Brick Township’s ocean beach facilities sustained a tremendous amount of damage during Sandy and were heavily used

during the cleanup on the Barrier Island. Mayor Acropolis and the Township Council know how important the beaches are to our community and the recovery from Sandy and are committed to ensuring that the beaches will be open this summer.

While there is a great deal of work that will need to be done in the future to return these beaches to their prime condition, the beaches will be open in 2013 for the families of Brick Township and the visitors to our community to enjoy.

Brick Township operates three ocean beaches and one riverfront beach at Windward Beach Park. All beaches are staffed

with lifeguards 7 days a week between June 16 and Labor Day. They are open weekends from Memorial Day until September 15. Beach badges are required for access to all beaches.

Beach Safety Tips

The Brick Township Department of Parks and Recreation and the Brick Township Lifeguards would like to share the following safety tips and suggestions to help ensure your visits to Brick Township’s beaches are safe and fun this summer:

How to Avoid and SurviveRip Currents

A rip current is a narrow, powerful current of water that runs perpendicular to the beach. Rip currents pull swimmers away from the beach and every year, over 100 people in the United States lose their lives because of them. Drowning deaths occur when people try to swim against the current.

The accompanying chart illustrates how to get out of a rip current if you find yourself in one. Do not fight the current; swim parallel to the shore.

Learn more by visiting the National Weather Service’s Rip Current Safety Web page at www.ripcurrents.noaa.gov

• Swim only when lifeguards are on duty; never underestimate the ocean or overestimate your ability to swim in the ocean.

• Swim within designated areas only.• Parents should never leave their child unattended.• Obey all rules and posted signs.• Always listen to lifeguards; it is their job to protect you.• Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, especially on

days with excessive and oppressive heat.

• Protect your skin - wear sunblock with a minimum sun protection factor of 15 anytime you expect to be exposed to the sun for any length of time. Reapply as often as needed.

• Wear eye protection. UV rays can damage eyes. Wear sunglasses that absorb at least 90 percent of UV sunlight.

• Watch for signs of heat stroke. These include red, hot and dry skin, lethargy, nausea and vomiting, weakness and dizziness. If you suspect someone is suffering from heat stroke, get the victim to a shady or cool area and call for assistance.
