EXPLORING CAREER PROSPECTS

Sister Betty Keane is a familiar face

in the Newman community that she

has called home for nearly 12 years.

She was recently recognised for

her wide-ranging work by being

announced as the winner of the town’s

International Women’s Day Award.

Completing her early studies in Sydney, Sister

Betty taught in New South Wales before arriving

in the Kimberley region of WA, where she

worked for 13 years. “I came from Ireland as

a girl with a young heart and an adventurous

spirit,” she said.

In her early 60s, Sister Betty decided she

would like to wind down a bit, doing quieter

work in a parish, so she retired from the

Kimberley and had a two-year break in Ireland.

She was invited by her Institute to run the House

of Welcome and Hospitality in Dublin, a work

very dear to her heart.

Feeling refreshed at the end of the two years,

she returned to Australia.

In 2001, she was invited to come to Newman and

she has made her mark, as energetic as ever, in

so many different ways - from organising church

services, jumble sales, carols by candlelight and

running weekly classes for about 40 children

after school to picking up litter and serving on

the Devonshire Tea Stall at the Fortescue Festival.

Sister Betty added, “I never feel lonely. I’m in

touch with such a diverse and inspiring range

of people every single day.”

The Award, sponsored by BHP Billiton Iron Ore,

was presented at the Newman Recreation Centre.

Referring to her unexpected recognition, Sister

Betty humbly said, “I have never looked for

attention. The eight people who were nominated

are all equally deserving of the award.”

For details of the other amazing award nominees,

see the story on page 2.

The International Women’s Day Award nominees shone at the presentation dinner attended by 280 guests.

There could only be one winner – Sister Betty Keane – but also on

the shortlist were Jackie Bickendorf, Danielle Cochrane, Anita Grace,

Leanne Lockyer, Suzy Oldham, Gerry Parsons and Nicole Willis.

Jackie was nominated for her work with the Indigenous

community through her YMCA role and her motivation and

enthusiasm inspires others.

Danielle, Chairperson of Newman Mainstreet Project, was

instrumental in organising the awards. Her nomination was for

helping with the fundraiser for David Adams’ family.

Anita was recognised for her help with providing food and

assistance to the Indigenous community when they are in need

of medical care.

Leanne volunteers with numerous community and sporting

groups, and her enthusiasm, dedication and willingness make

her reliable and dependable.

Suzy was singled-out for her involvement with several community

organisations but is particularly known for her work with the

Neighbourhood Centre and Girl Guides.

Gerry was shortlisted for her extraordinary commitment through

a range of activities and community and sporting groups.

Nicole was highlighted for her ‘can do’ approach to achieving goals

within a variety of organisations and her cheerful outlook and

willingness to lend a hand wherever it may be needed.

The calibre of these ladies shows that the town is indeed fortunate

to have a strong group of determined women that make a

difference in all walks of life.

An impression of how the units may look.

The Newman Visitors Centre will be seeing a bright new opportunity for themselves over the coming months with the addition of six new air-conditioned units, just 400 metres from the town centre, which will provide affordable accommodation for tourists and short-stay visitors.

The BHP Billiton Iron Ore-funded project is a boost to the Visitors Centre, which is a landmark in itself, with the massive Haulpak truck in the car park.

Tracey Bennett, Visitor Centre Manager said, “Each unit will consist of one bedroom with en suite facilities, a kettle and a fridge, and a lot of time and thought has been given to planning the fit-out.”

This novel setting will see tourists immersed in the essence of Newman as they will be surrounded by a Haulpak, drill rig, face shovel and digger! In fact, the communal barbecue area will be situated amongst the machinery so they can fully appreciate and soak up the experience.

In order to clear the land for construction, a time capsule that was buried in 1992 had to be unearthed and relocated. The plaque will mark its new site and its contents will finally be revealed on 15 August 2017.

If all goes according to plan, the units should be ready to receive their first guests closer to the end of the year - keep an eye out for regular updates from the Newman Visitor Centre.

Booking enquiries can be made through them on 9175 2888 or email [email protected]

NEWMAN’S COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER

The oldest community radio station in Western Australia is receiving a facelift, thanks to a generous $75,000 community grant from BHP Billiton Iron Ore.

Radio 6NEW has been on air since 1979 and the grant will used to

provide a much needed technology upgrade of the current computers

and software currently being used. This will enable a higher quality

of access and storage to music than ever before.

It is hoped that the funds will also enable an interactive website to be

built that will allow far greater coverage to more regional communities.

The plan is that the dollars will also stretch to soundproofing the

promo room and buying new microphones.

Another breakthrough that will really benefit the community is the new outside broadcasting caravan that will come into its own at town events.

It will add another dimension to life in Newman and convey some of the excitement and atmosphere at community events that only comes with live radio. Lynne Craigie, Shire President, has been a presenter since 2006. She said “Next year will be our 35th year! We’re on air 24/7 though some programs are pre-recorded and we’re always looking for new voices.”

If you would like to have a different experience and join the pool of broadcasters, please contact Lynne on 0407 985 058 or Bob Nicholson on 0437 308 221.

Keeping residents informed.

Broadcasters past and present. L to R: Rick Kinsman, Brett Kelly, Barbara Heffernan, Lynne Craigie and Bob Nicholson. Barbara grew up in Newman and now works in commercial radio in Sydney. The Book that she is holding is a comprehensive volume on Australian chart history from 1956 to 2010, which she presented to the volunteers at Radio 6NEW.

Newman’s BHP Billiton Community and Indigenous Affairs team have recently installed a new LED Community noticeboard, which is located adjacent to the BHP Billiton Housing office in the town.

This is the Company’s opportunity to promote and keep the community informed about significant developments and events happening in Newman. Keep your eye on it as BHP Billiton try to update it regularly.

Teamwork at East Pilbara Youth Centre’s YMCA Games Day.

Newman’s annual Youth Week from 8-13 April gave young people the chance to extend themselves.

Entries from a photography competition based around ‘My Favourite Things’ were on show in the shopping centre for the week and prizes awarded in three categories: 6-12 years (winner Sean Carroll), 13-18 years (winner Melissa Makdessi) and a People’s Choice award, won by 13 year old Keisha Atkins.

Monday’s colourful banner and tile painting run by a Martumilli Artist representative at the Youth Centre was also an exercise in group participation.

Tuesday was allocated to physical feats with fun team-building and communications games that included going blindfolded through an obstacle course with a partner giving directions.

‘Homelessness Matters’ was the topic on the Wednesday and attention was drawn to this predicament by taking a torn and battered couch into the shopping centre and engaging people in discussion.

Thursday’s participants donned aprons as PAMS (Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service) held a regional take on the ‘My Kitchen Rules’ TV program. Teams followed recipes to produce a variety of dishes and prizes were awarded for best teamwork, best presentation and the healthiest dish.

The week finished with a disco and the photography competition prize-giving on the Friday.

Jackie Bickendorf and her team at Newman Youth Services were behind this variety of events. She said, “The kids were kept busy and the week was a good demonstration of agencies working together.”

NEWVIEW FACT Newman was built by the

Mount Newman Mining Company between 1967 and 1969. The town

takes its name from Mount Newman, named in honour of AW Newman, an

early explorer who died of typhoid just before reaching the area in 1896.

WHERE DO YOU READ NEWVIEW?

The Newman Recreation Centre was buzzing on 16 April when representatives from a wide range of professions and industries were all under the same roof for the annual ‘New Horizons’ Career Expo and Recruitment Drive.

The Expo draws together employers from all walks of life, enabling students and jobseekers to be exposed to the opportunities that are ‘out there’. This year’s expo saw the building industry being represented for the first time.

Two guests from quite diverse areas addressed the crowd. Craig Hoyer, ex Swan Districts and Hawthorn AFL football player, working for many years in BHP Billiton’s Indigenous employment team and having worked closely with Apprenticeships Australia, was able to speak about the various pathways into employment with the company. He was also able to share his own valuable experiences of his journey from school through to where he is now and said, “Your first job probably won’t be THE job for the rest of your life, but you need to try different positions to find what you are suited to.”

Elliott McIntyre, HSEQ (Health Safety Environment Quality) Regional Manager WA & NT for Lend Lease Infrastructure Services talked about the emotional charges that are triggered at certain times and where they come from. He used four quadrants to show the journey of emotions - i.e. culture, social systems, personal and behaviour.

The East Pilbara Inter-Agency Networking Session (EPIANS) was established after front line workers from three community service agencies discussed the lack of resources and coordination of existing services, especially for remote staff in the region.

In November 2012 a number of agencies had their first get-together. The group is spearheading the Online Community Directory that will be linked to the Shire of East Pilbara website, where agency listing of services and information will be easily accessible by the regional community.

Ilona Diessner, Team Leader at Pilbara Joblink said, “Earlier this year, the group was successful in its grants application to establish the directory and we hope to have it launched before the end of the year.

“Through meeting regularly, we want newcomers in community service roles to be able to network, find out what colleagues

do, get to know other organisations and groups and become more involved,” Ilona continued.

Venues for the quarterly meetings, and the host agencies, have been mapped out for the rest of the year, with the Youth Centre being the location for the meeting in May. In August, it will be the turn of the Institute of Technology and in November, East Pilbara Independent Support (EPIS) will step up. For further details please contact Ilona on 9175 0015 or email her at [email protected]

Students from Newman Senior High School attended and so did older year groups from the town’s two primary schools. It was a great way for young people and their parents to see the possibilities when it comes to careers and training. Tremendous feedback is enabling the Expo to grow and evolve every year.

BHP Billiton Iron Ore’s Community Relations team – Emma-Jane Hunt, Megan Alchin and Alex Seed encourage BHP Billiton Iron Ore employees to be involved in the Company’s Matched Giving Program.

Two special occasions were held in mid-April to recognise BHP Billiton Iron Ore’s employees’ generous participation in the Company’s Matched Giving Program.

A Japanese-themed evening at the Boomerang Oval multipurpose facility was the first, where the Top 100 contributors attended a formal function where they were acknowledged for their significant donations, volunteering and fundraising efforts in support of charitable and not-for-profit organisations.

Alex Seed, Superintendent Community Relations, and Newman’s Senior Sergeant Shane Sadler, on behalf of the WA Police Legacy charity, both made speeches. Alex reinforced the importance of this vital program. He said, “We would like to encourage all employees to jump on board and get involved.”

Six BHP Billiton Iron Ore employees received special mention for their contributions and efforts, having supported their choice of Newman community organisations. Neil Clark and Ian Porter were singled out as donors; Peter Withers and Garry Roulston were highlighted as fundraisers (for WA Police Legacy) and Shannon Devereux and Tania Dutton were recognised as volunteers.

A few days later, a rather more informal morning tea at the Red Sands Bistro was open to all BHP Billiton Iron Ore employees, to thank them, also, for participating in the Matched Giving Program.

It may not be widely known but the program started as a pilot scheme in 2002 at specific sites in Australia, South Africa and the United Kingdom. Matched Giving now operates at all BHP Billiton-managed sites. It empowers employees around the world to have a say in where the Company’s charitable contributions are directed.
