I break the fitness protocol for my clients down into three simple and effective areas; nutrition, training, and consistency.

Nutrition: Abs are made in the kitchen. We know that food has three sources of energy - fats, proteins and carbohydrates. Somewhere along the line someone decided that fats were bad for us. Seems intuitive enough, “I don’t want to get fat so why would I eat fats?”. So we laden our diets with carbohydrates and protein.

Carbohydrates as an energy source were designed to be used to fuel vigorous activity and refuel after vigorous activity. If you’re going to the gym its ok to have some carbs in your meal beforehand as you know it will get used while you exercise. If you have just finished a gym session, have some carbs in your meal straight after, you know it’s replenishing the muscles you’ve just used. At no other times are carbs really necessary. Your desk job certainly isn’t vigorous and doesn’t require a large breakfast of carbs: cereal, toast, fruit, fruit juice. At all other times, those carbohydrates are converted to fat and stored in your fat tissue.

That someone who decided eating fat made you fatter? They were wrong. When a larger portion of your diet is made up of

good fat, you signal to your body that fat as an energy source is not scarce. This tells your body you no longer need to treat it as a scarce energy resource, that you can burn it off and you’re body doesn’t need to store it.

Now assuming that you aren’t eating more than your body needs (no one can lose body fat if they are eating above their daily requirement) you are in the most optimized state to burn that fat! The only stipulation to all this is that you add healthy fats (not bad fats) to your diet. Think almonds, avocados, healthy oils (EVOO) and lean meats.

Training: Building Muscle Mass. The goal for everyone, both male and female, has and will always be to add lean body mass and reduce body fat.

Consider this simple analogy of your body. We have two cars, both hold 50L of fuel. We

As a trainer one rule still holds constant: you (the trainee) get exactly what you want and you can ask for anything. If you insist you want to walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes that is exactly what we will do. My role as a trainer is to make what you want to do and what you need to do to match up. My goal is to set you on the right path with a few basic principles of health and fitness that should deliver you the best results.

To an outsider the fitness world can be very confusing and is ever changing. There is always a new fad diet today and a new training philosophy tomorrow. High carb versus low carb or no carb? High protein or low protein? What about low intensity long distance running/riding, short sprints or interval training? Or are you better off doing weight training? The questions go on and on and the answers are often conflicting.

My process is simple; no tricks, just consistent and thorough training. You only get out what you put in.

start the cars and we’ll keep them running continuously until all the fuel is gone. In this analogy the fuel refers to the extra fat we are carrying around that we want to get rid of. Car A has a V6 engine and Car B has a V8 engine. Which car uses its fuel up the fastest? Its Car B, because it has a bigger engine that uses more fuel per unit of time. So we need to figure out how to build a bigger engine for the human body so it too can burn that extra fuel (fat) we are carrying around.

The quickest way to build that engine is strength training, specifically 3 to 4 weight sessions of 45 minutes each per week. The important thing to remember is to push yourself beyond your normal limits. That last rep in every set is meant to challenge you, it’s meant to be almost impossible. Run for that last minute on the treadmill even though your lungs are screaming at you to stop. It is the intensity that will work for you in the long run.

The goal for everyone,

both male and female,

has and will always be to

add lean body mass and

reduce body fat.

Consistency: Day in and day outNone of the above will get you any results unless you can do it day in and day out. This is where our minds hold us back the most. Yes we can do the hard work in the kitchen for one day of good eating and yes we can go hard in the gym for one day, but its the people that can do it day after day that see the results.

That’s the final frontier we all have to conquer, making sound daily habits so this part of our life can be put on auto pilot. That even when life’s hurdles get in the way, when you haven’t been eating well or haven’t had the chance to get to the gym for a couple of weeks, your preformed habits are so well ingrained that you can get back to the basics covered above quickly.

Why the fitness Industry?Being active has always been an important part of my life, whether it’s playing sports, running or working out in the gym. Even as a kid I participated in my mum’s aerobic classes, back then known as ‘Jazzercise’. I loved the social aspect and buzz of the gym environment. So four years ago I began teaching group fitness as a side job at UWA Recreation and Fitness Centre. After many years of working in a sedentary office job I soon realised my energy was best spent fulfilling my passion and sharing it with others. Naturally moving into the fit-ness industry was the next step. Being able to motivate others, see the increase in their confidence and being able to help them achieve their fitness goals is so worthwhile. There is no greater gift than being able to enjoy what you do every day. Health and fitness goalsMy fitness goal for 2013 is to build overall body strength, in particular through the upper body. One milestone is to complete 5 pull-ups by the end of the year! Attaining a better work/life balance is also a big one for this year. I firmly believe in always striving to achieve and do your best in what you do but not at the cost of time with your friends and family. Also give yourself permission to take some time-out to do something that you really enjoy. This is vital to maintaining a healthy mind, body and soul. It’s about finding out what your priorities are and giving the quality time to those other areas

sources of exercise, however being that one of the goals for this year is to build upper body strength, UWA Sports trainer Jordan has designed a fantastic strength based program that includes heavy weight resistance exercises. I try to do the program three times a week as it’s a great challenge with speedy results. Pull-ups here I come!

Nutrition1. Eat foods that provide the most

nutritional value to keep your body fuelled for exercise.

2. Be kind to yourself, we all have our vices so if you do have a few ‘not so healthy snacks’ see it as a treat and enjoy it, tomorrow’s another day!

Just as important as it is to fuel up before you exercise, your body needs to replenish lost energy and nutrients as well as repair muscle post-workout with a combination of protein and carbs.

Achieving a terrific Tush! It’s all about finding a mixture of functional cardio and weight resistance exercises that will strengthen the glutes, give you definition and assist with activities for daily living. Try these exercises every second day begin with body weight then gradually add load with dumbbells (barbell for squats), for higher intensity give the plyometric exercises a go!• Squats – or plyometric (jump squats)• Lunges – or plyometric (jump lunges) • Step ups• Bridge glute raises• Single leg deadlifts• Hill running

Keeping a positive mental body imageWorking in the fitness industry it is easy to be consumed with ‘how you look’ and at times can become an unhealthy obsession.

One thing I have learnt - how you feel about the way you look is a reflection of how you feel about yourself on the inside and this is influenced by your thoughts. “.. your inner wisdom represents the voice that speaks from your heart - and the more you tune into this voice, the more power you give it.” You alone have the power to change your attitude towards your body image though positive thinking.

A common error that we are all guilty of is comparing ourselves to others, this is a waste of energy as we all have different body types and genetics that we can’t change. Embrace the body you have been given and if you want to make a change write down what you want and research how you are going to do it, while setting realistic and achievable goals.

Know that having a down day is okay and happens to everyone, then take some time to acknowledge your achievements and how far you have come.

whatever is true, whatever is worthy of respect, whatever is just, whatever is pure,

whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if something is excellent or praise-

worthy, think about these things.

COMPETITIONS

Inter-Faculty is a great way for UWA students to represent their faculties, get fit and brag that their faculty is the best! Fierce rivalry has been taking place amongst the faculties ever since the University was founded. Competitions take place on most Wednesday afternoons and include excitement, fun and comraderie.

Sports representatives are elected from each faculty on campus at UWA. The representative coordinates the selection, training and games of each faculty. All sports representatives are required to attend the Inter-Faculty meeting.

Part of college life is bragging about how good your college is to students from other colleges, and nothing gives you more bragging rights than winning the Inter-College cups.
