View beautiful blooming flowers and take part in special events including self-guided tours, community festivals and more. 800-527-3529; www.doorcounty.com Midwest Horse Fair – Madison April 19-21, 2013 Whether you are a horse owner or simply a horse lover, be sure to check out the Midwest Horse Fair at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. One of the top horse fairs in the country, this three-day festival features clinics and seminars. Admission is free on Sunday for veterans as part of Military Day to honor heroes. Amateurs and professionals will compete for the title of best grilled cheese in a variety of categories. All entries must use real Wisconsin cheese and judges will score on presentation, taste and style. Don’t miss the performance by Kelly Garland Reynolds and her dancing horse El Gato. Horicon Marsh is a vast wetland and is both a State Wildlife Area and a National Wildlife Refuge. At the festival you can enjoy birding bus, boat, bicycle and hiking tours that allow participants the chance to identify species and learn about the natural habitat. Syttende Mai – Stoughton May 17-19, 2013 Join in the annual celebration that commemorates the signing of the Norwegian Constitution on May 17, 1814. Stoughton’s citizens honor their Norwegian roots with parades, folk dancing from the world famous Stoughton Norwegian Dancers, arts and crafts, Norwegian costumes, rosemaling exhibitions and woodcarving. In its 14th year, this spring event promises colorful wildflowers and blankets of trillium lining roads that wind through the hills and valleys of Western Wisconsin, guiding you to artists’ studios that are off the beaten track. Chocolate Fest – Burlington May 24-27, 2013 Calling all chocolate lovers! This tasty festival offers a weekend of fun, games, cooking demonstrations and more chocolate than you could ever imagine. In 1953, the Million Penny Parade was a penny drive that raised enough money to complete Lakeland Memorial Hospital. Sixty-years later, the town is at it again. This time, the money raised will benefit the Dr. Kate Scholarship Fund and Arbor Vitae-Woodruff School. The finale festival will include a parade, craft show, auction, car show and more. 715-356-9421; www.townofwoodruff.org Wisconsin Canoe Heritage Day – Spooner May 25, 2013 The Saturday of Memorial Day weekend is Canoe Heritage Day and the Wisconsin Canoe Heritage Museum is celebrating with an entire festival. Patrons can enjoy live music, a canoe and wooden boat show, museum tours and ongoing activities. This free event will also include an unveiling of the museum’s new 2013 exhibit. 25th Annual Great Wisconsin Cheese Festival – Little Chute May 31-June 2, 2013 From a big cheese parade, to cheese carving demonstrations to cheese tastings and even a cheese curd-eating contest, this festival celebrates all things cheese. In 1989, the festival started as a response to Rome, New York’s claim of having the best cheese in the nation. Little Chute invited the mayor of Rome to the Cheese Festival for a cheese-tasting competition to settle the dispute (festival goers chose Wisconsin cheeses in taste tests). Today, the festival trumpets this victory with three days of cheese celebrations. Enjoy live music, entertainment and activities for the entire family. Events throughout the state provide new and practiced anglers an opportunity to experience the sport’s pleasures. Butterfest – Sparta June 6-9, 2013 Named after Sparta’s historic award winning butter makers, Butterfest is an annual celebration that draws thousands of people for four days of fun. Complete with a plethora of events and activities including a carnival, milking contest, buttermaking demonstration, car show, live entertainment, the Buttercup Hockey Tournament and the famous Butterfest Parade, this festival offers fun for the entire family. 608-269-1937; www.spartabutterfest.com Walleye Weekend Festival – Fond du Lac June 7-9, 2013 Walleye Weekend, Fond du Lac’s signature family event, is one of the largest festivals in Wisconsin. Through its efforts, Walleye Weekend benefits more than 100 non-profit organizations and last year’s festival raised $180,000 for the community. New additions to this year’s festival include opening music by .38 Special, an adult and teen obstacle course race, a Wheels for Meals Bike Ride and paddle boarding demonstrations. 920-923-6555; www.fdlfest.com PrideFest – Milwaukee June 7-9, 2013 Milwaukee’s PrideFest is one of the largest gay/lesbian, bisexual and transgender festivals in the nation. Held each year at Henry W. Maier Festival Park, attendees can enjoy numerous festivities, a marketplace and performances by more than 150 bands and acts on eight stages. 414-272-3378; www.pridefest.com Backroads Banderdinker – Hayward June 8, 2013 This year’s Backroads Banderdinker “Celebration of Paddlesports” will bring a colorful array of kayaks, canoes, stand-up paddleboards, rowboats and even a dragon boat to Nelson Lake in Hayward. The event is a five-mile noncompetitive paddle complete with fun-filled checkpoints along the way, like listening to live string instrument music on the water. At the end of the paddle, participants will enjoy the After Paddle Party. 715-558-3040; www.banderdinker.com Fete de Fleurs – St. Croix Falls June 8-9, 2013 Fete de Fleurs, meaning “flowering of the vines,” is a summer festival at Chateau St. Croix Winery. The festival features wine tasting tours, gourmet food vendors, arts and crafts booths, live music and carriage rides. 715-483-2556; www.chateaustcroix.com Carp Fest and Wisconsin Carp Fishing Championship – Two Rivers June 8-9, 2013 Two Rivers, also known as “Carp Town,” is the official home of the Wisconsin Carp Fishing Championship and Carp Fest. Watch from the shoreline as anglers from around the world participate in this annual catch and release tournament. Lumberjack World Championships – Hayward July 25-27, 2013 Watch as more than 125 male and female lumberjacks chop, climb, run and roll their way through more than 21 different events at the “Olympics of the Forest.” Among these events are the 90-foot Speed Climb, the Springboard Chop, Men’s and Women’s Logrolling and the Master’s Double Buck. From Austria to China, Australia and even India, 12 anniversary experiences span 11 countries on six continents. As the birthplace of Harley-Davidson, Milwaukee will serve as the location for a four-day long celebration. Held at the Henry W. Maier Festival Park on Labor Day weekend, the Milwaukee 110th Anniversary Celebration will include a custom bike show, motorcycle display, a special HOG 30th anniversary celebration, and live entertainment.
