What happens through the winter?

FCC ‘THROWLINE ’ CLUB MAGAZINE

CONTINUE TO MEET AT THE CLUBHOUSE Open house every Wednesday We meet through the winter on Wednesdays, just to catch up with each other and see what’s going on. Some people paddle till it gets too dark to see. But the sessions are not organ-ised. So you need to be a competent paddler and go in a group of at least three. Or approach a coach and ask if they will go with you!

SLALOM TRAINING Switches from Tuesday evenings to Wednesday and keeps going as long as people are happy to train as the days get shorter.

POOL SESSIONS START OCTOBER 10th Frome Leisure Centre Fridays, 8-9pm Cost £2.80 young people, £3.30 Adults

The pool session will be divided into two, so you get half an hour in the pool kayaking. Bring a swimming costume and towel. We provide the boats, paddles and spray decks. We don’t wear helmets and buoyancy aids in pool sessions. It’s easy.

Deliberate sinking of boats is not encouraged, because it puts people’s backs at risk when they empty flooded boats. Normal pool rules apply and so we do what the lifeguards say.

Pool sessions are for everyone!

Pool sessions are for ...

HAVING FUN You can paddle about with your friends, or practise some play moves at the deep end. We have a Sit on Top and a couple of play-boats for you to use. You will get a guaranteed half hour in the pool. Once a month we will devote one session to playing games!

PLAYING CANOE POLO Once a month we will organise two polo games: one for experienced paddlers (contact game), and the other for less experienced paddlers (non contact game). Polo is really good fun! It improves paddling fitness because of the speed of action and it improves paddling skills. The contact game will be at 8.30pm (ie the second paddling session). The non contact game will be at 8pm (ie the first paddling session of the night). We use the club pool boats and we provide the specialist kit (helmets, BAs and paddles).

LEARNING SKILLS (CAPSIZE DRILL, RESCUES, ROLLING ETC You can book an instructor for a part of a session by signing the booking sheet when you pay at the desk. Then in the pool, you ask the instructor to help you with whatever you want to learn!

The day went something like this: Round everyone up for photo opportunity. Not easy! People keep disappearing. Explain the challenge: whacking poles, hula-hoops, throwing balls, picking up balls and so on. Teams compete against the clock. Tracey does the judging of outfits. Prize winners collect winnings! People get back in boats for a bit more fun. Chaos ensues with water pistols and general capsizing. It was a good day!

CARDINGTON

SLALOM

30/31st August

By Su Fewell

Cardington, for those who don’t know, is Britain’s first artificial

slalom course, created from a drainage ditch near Bedford. John, Kieran F, Kei-ran C, Chloe Collins, Aimee Collins and myself went to compete there at the end of August.

Our runs varied enormously on both days, with Kieran F paddling first to put in a slow, but fairly clean, first run, backed up by a more promising second run, where he showed some of the form we had seen earlier in the year. John was next, in the same division, his first run was fast and clear, but overall better second runs from all and a mistake in the evil stagger from gates 14 to 17, left him lagging.

My first run is best not mentioned, but my second was masterful, second only to Rich’s C1 run at Winchester, and, hey, I saved everyone else from having to come last! Kieran C was our next paddler and just failed to get it together for the whole first run, which earned him the prize of a little ‘pep’ talk during lunch. I don’t remember what I said, but I should say it more often as Kieran’s

second run was an awesome 30 sec-onds faster than his first and was only marred by a brief run in with a plastic bollard, earning him 11th out of 39 overall.

The girls brought up the rear, with Chloe’s first run falling victim to the evil stagger in the latter part of the course, and a better second run looked promising until the results were out and we discovered that Chloe had been given the wrong penalty on gate 10. So whilst John and I paid a short, and not so sweet, visit to control to sort that out, Aimee took to the water to show us how it is meant to be done.

She made light work of the early gates, but a mistake at gate 16, on her first run, and lucky correction, almost sent John and me to early graves. For her second run she skipped and twirled her way down the course, weaved some sort of magic on the evil stagger and finished in 4th place over-all.

As is now usual, Saturday concluded with a restaurant visit, where we watched all 3 teenagers eat their own body weight in pizza

Sunday dawned bright, and far too early. First runs were interesting, with John picking up a 50 and both Kieran F and Chloe making silly mistakes,

Dodgy paddling … continued

although the promise of a new boat seemed to have improved Chloe’s concentration. Somewhere in the chaos I also found myself buying a new boat, not that it improved anything in my paddling, it did give me the excuse I needed to come last again, though, as the darn thing is just too quick!

Keiran C found the form we always knew he had on the Sunday, to put in a fantastically fast time, but a few penalties left him in 11th after first runs. Aimee’s first run saw her manage the final gates with style, but an early mistake cost her dearly.

Second runs saw an awesome, and very lucky, head-rolling manoeuvre from Kieran F, although a slow time left him in 38th place. John’s second run was also a vast improvement, but a strong field meant he fared no better in the placings than Kieran F.

Keiran C built on the form he had shown earlier, clearing the stagger with style to take a very well deserved 11th overall (618 points) and he was chased down the course by Chloe, on her way to 3rd

place and promotion to Div 2. Aimee took to the water for her last run, making good progress down the first half of the course, until an octopus surfaced at gate 15. Despite frantic back-paddling, a few playboat manoeuvres and whopping it with her paddle, there was no avoiding the little sucker and poor Aimee took a swim, almost getting Kieran F disqualified in the process as he jumped over the

safety barrier without his helmet.

Once again, Frome was complimented on behaviour, sportsmanship and helpfulness of our teenagers, which is such a regular thing

that I am getting blasé about it, but I would like to say ‘Thank You’ to all of them for making slaloms such an en-joyable time for everyone.

Our next outing is Symonds Yat Div 2/3, followed by Shepperton, and we can only hope Kieran F can train hard enough to keep Keiran C off his heels for the rest of the year.

Wye rapids, 21st September

FCC ‘THROWLINE ’ CLUB MAGAZINE

The Wye Rapids

By Rich Carter On a slightly chilly morning we gath-ered at the club house for a day’s pad-dling on the Wye rapids at Symonds Yat. There were ten of us. The plan was to be at the get in 10am, but we arrived at 10.30am. Not to worry. Our President was there and had buttered up the car park organ-iser, so car spaces were reserved next to his car, and we had a space for the trailer as well. Nice One Graham!

The morning session was a bit busy. Well that is an understatement: it was packed. We had a number of newish paddlers, to be precise three 9 year olds and two 15 year olds. The other young people, Chloe and Keiran, knew what they were doing, so I left them to their own devices. All I can say is the three very small 9 year olds flew around the water, making the adult beginner from other clubs a

bit nervous. But our three just paddled around them, to the point where

people came up to us and said how good they were. Charlie and Ollie getting to grips with leaning downstream for moving water, were a bit confused when I said lean up stream going in to a eddy. They did manage though as they battled through the hoards. Chloe and Keiran were left to play around which

did include sinking each other. After lunch it was a lot better with not

so many paddlers. So we finished the day swimming the rapid and on our return to the get off point there was the let’s sink Rich game. Thanks gang! Paddlers and Points Girls: Aimee C, Chloe C, Chloe H (3) Boys: Charlie L, Jos M (3), Keiran C, Ollie H (3)

Women: Pam D Men: Dave P (3), Graham W, Rich C

We also met on the day John, Andrew and Lorraine who were doing slalom practice in the C2. Final words from Rich: Thanks for a great day but I was very tired all day Monday. Sadly I am not 22 anymore, as I told Jos I was.

Here are the POINTS so far this year. With the approach of the winter season, we can expect this table to alter just a bit! Tiverton weekend coming up is bound to change everything for starters.

What is this points thing about? It’s really just a bit of fun. We award 3 points to paddlers who take a swim in club events. If people roll, they gain 1 point. A paddler who needs a rescue wins 2 points. At the end of the year we count them all up and then award the Copper Noseclip to the person with the most points.

If you are interested, our winner for 2013 was Gareth, with a grand score of 30!

However, it needs to be stressed that we recognise the gaining of points means paddlers have been trying! So it not totally ‘bad’ to be on this list!

Canoeing and kayaking are “Assumed risk” – “Water contact sports” that may carry attendant risks. Participants should be aware of and accept these risks, and be responsible for their own action and involvement.

Chloe and Rich about to do the hula-hoop routine, whilst under attack from water pistols! P8 for report.

A very successful work party!

Gate post was replaced and gate re-hung. More dog-proof netting was fixed. Graffiti was sorted. Changing room floors were cleaned. And there was time to stand and chat! Thank you everyone!
