BRiAn ETZKIN
Over the past 12 seasons Brian Etzkin has turned the Cleveland State women’s tennis program into one of the top teams in the Horizon League – leading the Vikings to the top of the standings last sea-son. Etzkin recorded a career first last year, guiding the women’s team to its first-ever regular season Horizon League title.
This success hasn’t come as a surprise, as Etzkin has guided Cleveland State to 10 sraight winning seasons over his 12-year tenure.
Etzkin became the head coach at CSU prior the 2002-03 season, taking over a women’s program that was in dire need of rebuilding. And the change came quickly, as the Vikings won 10 matches during
Etzkin’s second year and have finished .500 or better in 10 of his 12 seasons.
The winningest coach in school history, Etzkin reached an impressive milestone during the 2012-13 season, recording his 150th career victory with the women’s program. Entering the 2014-15 season, Etzkin has an overall record of 163-152 at the helm of the Vikings.
Etzkin’s success on the court has translated into an array of Horizon League accolades, in-cluding three Horizon League Coach of the Year awards (2004, 2011, 2014). He has mentored 13 All-League honorees, two Horizon League Players of the Year (Sarah Galon-2005 and Lauren Golick-2014), and two Horizon League Newcomers of the Year (Sarah Galon-2004 and Lauren Golick-2014). During Etzkin’s tenure, two Vikings have earned First Team hon-ors every year of their career - Sarah Galon (2004, ‘05, ‘06, ‘07) and Catrine Bjerrehus (2009, ‘10, ‘11, ‘12).
The Vikings are just as impressive off the court, as Alex Bush, Princess Gbadamosi, Lauren Golick, and Alex Power were named ITA Scholar-Athletes last year - with Alex Power be-coming the fifth Viking to earn the honor all four years of their CSU career under Etzkin’s guidance. The women’s team has also received ITA All-Academic Team honors eight times under Etzkin, most recently following the 2013-14 season.
Three Vikings have also been awarded the Horizon League Herb Foster Sportsmanship Award, including Sarah Galon who was a two-time recipient (2006, 2007). Charlotte Gibbons (2010) and Morgan Ungerott (2008) also earned the accolade during their time at CSU.
Etzkin has also encouraged his players to become community leaders. Over the past 11 years three members of the women’s tennis team have been officers in the Cleveland State Stu-dent-Athlete Advisory Council – Nicole Janek, Sarah Galon and Morgan Ungerott.
In addition, the Vikings have gotten involved in many community service projects over the years, including working at the Cleveland Food Bank, adopting a second grade class at Mar-ion-Sterling Elementary school in downtown Cleveland and spending time at the Devon Oaks Assisted Living facility.

Polito, who was an assistant coach with the Vikings from Sep-tember 2012 through February 2014, returns to collegiate tennis after a brief stint as the head boys and girls coach at Hawken School in Gates Mills, Ohio.
During Polito’s first stint at Cleveland State, the women’s team advanced to the semifinals of the Horizon League Tournament for the fourth straight season, and had three players earn postseason honors.
Polito joined the Cleveland State coaching staff during the 2012-13 season after a six-year stint as an assistant coach with the women’s tennis team at Georgia. During his tenure, the Bulldogs posted an overall record of 139-29, won two regular season SEC championships, claimed three SEC tourna-ment titles and advanced past the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament three times. At Ohio State, Polito led the Buckeyes to a combined record of 31-19 and consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. In 2002, he was honored as the ITA Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year.

The Cleveland State women’s tennis team had a record-setting season during 2013-14, capturing the Horizon League Regular Season Title for the first time in program history. The Vikings, who have finished as the Horizon League Regular Season runner-up three of the last four seasons, were finally able to knock off perennially powerhouse UIC and earn the top spot in the standings.
The Vikings got off to a strong start during the fall portion of their schedule, finishing with a 36-25 mark in singles play and a 17-12 record in doubles action. Cleveland State had its best performance at the Michigan State Invitational, picking up a C Doubles title with Alex Bush and Ellen Folkers and an A Singles Backdraw title with Princess Gbadamosi.
Despite CSU’s strong showing during the fall season, the Vikings struggled during the first half of the spring season, notching just a 2-9 record during the first seven weeks. Cleve-land State’s lone wins during this stretch came against IPFW and Saint Louis.
The Vikings were able to turn things around during the month of March though, posting a 4-1 record over the final three weeks. Included in their four wins was a perfect 3-0 start to league play, as they earned victories over Wright State, Detroit, and Oakland, taking an early lead in the league standings.
Cleveland State’s first and only Horizon League loss of the regular season came against Youngstown State at the beginning of April, but the Vikings quickly rebounded, closing out the regular season with five straight wins. Four of those wins came against league opponents, including Cleveland State’s first-ever victory over UIC on April 18, 2014.
After finishing the regular season with a 7-1 league record, Cleveland State claimed the regular season crown and the No. 1 seed in the Horizon League Tournament - also a program first. With the top seed, the Vikings earned a bye into the semifinals where they defeated No. 5 Detroit, 4-1 to advance to the championship match for the third time in program history. In the championship match, Cleveland State came up against third-seeded Youngstown State, with the Penguins once again coming away with the victory.
Although the Vikings fell short of the tournament championship, they were still rewarded by the Horizon League in their postseason honors, with head coach Brian Etzkin and fresh-man Lauren Golick both picking up major awards. Etzkin was named the Coach of the Year for the third time in his career, while Golick was named Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year. Golick was the second Viking to earn Player of the Year honors and the third to earn Freshman of the Year honors.
Also earning postseason accolades were seniors Alex Bush and Kara Sherwood - Bush earning a spot on the All-Horizon League First Team and Sherwood being named to the All-Horizon League Second Team.
